Such a great place to go after work for a reasonably priced relaxing stretch and massage.

I am giving a poor review because I thought this place wasn't professional. First of all, it was extremely loud. The workers kept yelling and talking to each other while giving my husband and I a massage. The atmosphere felt chaotic and not relaxing. They also kept switching staff mid massage. My husband had three different people massaging him at separate times, it definitely ruined the consistency of the massage. They kept walking in/out of the room to get stuff or to go talk with the other workers. But what got to me the most is that they overcharged us by $10 because the lady in the front didn't know how to do basic math, but we still ended up leaving a tip on top of the overcharge when we first booked the massage. After the massage was over, the same lady had the audacity to come up to us and say that "Your tip is too low" and straight up asking for a higher tip. I was thrown off guard because I couldn't believe that someone would ask for a bigger tip (especially considering that they overcharged us in the first place). That was just so rude and unprofessional. Also the massage was mediocre so I feel like it was our right to decide how much we want to tip. I hope the extra tip they asked for was worth losing us as customers. read more

For $25 it was great! The guy who did my massage were professional and I never felt weird. I don't think he spoke English, but that was fine. It is an open space do any time someone comes in you get to hear their conversations. The only weird thing was that 2 men came in asking for young pretty girls to do their massage. I don't know what was going on but it made me extremely uncomfortable! This has nothing to do with the parlor, but if you're going there don't be creepy and if you want "extra" maybe be a little more inconspicuous about it! read more

OK so you have to go in here knowing that for $25 you might not get a luxury experience. However, since this place is right down town and I love a massage I decided to walk in on a whim to an empty parlor. I was settled in a foot soak and was having my shoulders rubbed within two minutes. I have had massages from all kinds of places and you really pay for the ambiance as most therapists will pretty much give you the same quality of massage if they're worth working in their field. For me this place has one of the best massages I've ever gotten. I asked for deep tissue and got exactly that for a change! If you like a soothing relaxing massage you can ask for that here, speak up! I need my back really worked and my masseuse did such a good job I came back another time to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It wasn't! As for ambiance it can be annoying when there is a crowd but usually everyone is quiet and you're fully dressed so it's not really too uncomfortable. Yes they do unhook your bra and tuck towels in to your pants so that your clothes don't get covered in oil, it's not inappropriate and again SPEAK UP. Don't complain about being uncomfortable if you won't let them know, they want you to leave happy but they aren't mind readers. read more

I had a foot massage on January 4. After I was done with my massage which was a hour long, I was told that I had to pay a $10 tip on a $30 massage. I said I didn't think it was appropriate for them to say what the tip should be. So instead of a $30 foot massage it's now a $40 foot massage! I won't be back. read more

Woke up with a stiff neck and back so I called and scheduled an appt, but I noticed they also allow walk-ins. They have both men and women massage therapists. This place is legit. I'm a runner and this is the only place that can really work out my muscles. I always feel refreshed after a massage here. However, I suggest that you do your homework and make sure you understand Chinese massage. This is NOT your typical American massage. I just got back from an incredible massage. Not like anything I've experienced before. I've had a lot of massages, some of which cost three times as much as Red Lantern. This was unique. I felt relaxed and awakened. Its not a rub down. Its a vigorous full body massage. He checked many times on the pressure so I guess it could be lighter. I liked the pressure. I liked being able to walk in. The room was darkened, with soft music playing. There was nothing distracting me from my massage even though others were getting massaged at the same time. Very quiet. One year later: I've now had four massages at the Red Lantern and I feel the need to add to the above review. My first experience was wonderful. I wish I had asked the massage therapist his name so I could have had him again. I've had two great massages and two that were phoned in. They have a routine they use. In the two good massages the therapist tuned into my body and gave me his full attention. During the two that weren't so great, they chatted with others and paid attention to what was going on in the room, not so much me. My advice is if you get a massage you like, ask your massage therapist his/her name and ask for that person again. Or if you get one you don't like, ask that person's name so you can avoid them in the future. read more

The man who did my girlfriend's 'massage' felt her up on her butt and in her crotch. It's normal to massage the glutes and inner thighs, but this guy was just lightly rubbing her butt the whole time, including when he was working on other areas. He also lifted the towel in order to see her breasts when she turned over on her back. Filing a police report now. In the meantime, please, if you go here (don't go here), for your safety, avoid the guy with the tattoos on his right arm and the gap between his front teeth. I've been here several times. It did seem to be a good deal, but after this last time, I'm not sure I'll go back. $20 for an hour reflexology and massage session. They've always used so much pressure that it was close to unbearable, but you felt good afterwards. This is not the place for someone who doesn't like deep pressure. I had Peter the first couple times I went and he was great. I went last night and requested Peter. I was told over the phone that he was there and that I could have him. When I arrived they gave me a woman I had never seen before. I said okay because I figured that it's always good to try someone new. I have noticed that everytime I request someone specific or a male or female specifically, they always give me the opposite of what I ask for. I know that there is some language barrier, but this time the woman working the front desk spoke pretty good English. The woman who gave me my massage was pretty terrible. There were maybe 2 minutes out of the sixty where something actually felt good. The rest of the time I was gritting my teeth just to bare it. I did ask her about halfway through to ease up and she did, but just barely. I do feel bruised and out of sorts today. The time before when I went was similar. After this, I don't think I'll go back again. Too bad. It was good value for the money. It never came close to a professional massage, but if you just needed some kinks worked out it was a great place to go on your way home from work. Now, you seem to leave in pain every time you go. Had a birthday gift certificate for 25.00 60 min reflexology massage. The massage started out too hard I had to keep asking softer, softer! I almost left half way through. Small improvements were made but overall hurt. I feel so violated the way he pulled my pants down swiftly tucking towel under panties. I was shocked and then he yanked my shirt up to expose my back lifting shirt to neck shoving bra strap into my neck. I decided no tip! No way. I was asked to tip and when I said no and proceeded to my car i was followed my 2 men and two woman telling me I did not pay!! I had a gift certificate and am most definitely not tipping. I was told to come back to store where I reluctantly followed now there are 5 people surrounding me. I'm left with a kidnapped and violated feeling from the way I was treated. The ambiance is different and they do speak chinese (doesn't sound like mandarin to me) while they work, but who cares- they are nice and the business is family owned. First thing to note: it advertises the massage as $30, but once you finish, they point to a small sign that says mandatory $10 tip per person, so it's actually $40. Such a scam. The people did not speak any English and kept leaving in the middle of the massage for a few minutes at a time. They were also talking to each other during the entire hour. Oddly amazing is the only way I can describe it. Not a lot of fluff. They get down to business. And it is by far the deepest massage I have ever got. The oddities were the gal stood in the room as I undressed, there is no sheet over you, there's a lot of karate chopping, expect a full butt massage, and there is like monkey bars over the massage table and she asks you if you want her to walk on your back. It was all a very interesting experience. But I went in with horrible back pain and came out feeling much better so I am a happy camper read more

Wear loose clothing, don't disrobe. $20.00 + tip for 1 hour foot and body massage, you can't beat this place. If you are not used to getting massages, or don't want a deep massage, ask the lady at the front desk for a soft massage. I'd give The Red Lantern ten stars if I could. They're worth all the praise they can get. Regular massages will remove toxins in your body. The turn over in therapists seems to be more stable now than it has been for the last couple of years. It used to somewhat frustrate me when I would request a certain person only to learn he was no longer there but that the 'new person' was just as good. I've been getting massages long enough to know a good therapist from a lousy one. When I get a good therapist, I like to stay with that person. Since I prefer a deep massage, I ask for a man, not a woman. However, I have had women massage therapists that could rival a man therapist. Having said all of that, I must tell you that I can't say enough good about The Red Lantern in Auburn, Ca. For the money + tip, you certainly can't go wrong. I usually start off giving a $5.00 tip. After I've had 3 or 4 massages from that therapist and, providing I like their massage, I advance them to a $10.00 tip. I carry 2 $5.00 bills in my pocket. If I get switched to a new therapist, I start off with a $5. tip. If I get my regular therapist, I give the $10 tip. My current male therapist is the BEST I've ever had, bar none, so I give him a $20.00 tip. They recoginze me as a regular client and I think the $20.00 tip gets me some extra special treatment. I go each week, may start going twice a week. At $20.00 for a one hour massage + tip, you can't beat it. I've had better massages at The Red Lantern than I've had with the majority of massage therapists that I've paid $50, $60, & $70 for. (To all the massage threpists that may read this, Sorry but, that's the honest truth!) I appreciate the work you're doing but, I feel that I get more for my money at The Red Lantern. Bottom line is, we all are hunting for " the mostest for the leastest" ! If you're just thinking about getting a massage, I'd recommend you log off your computer right now (that's, after you read the rest of my review) and head out the door to treat your body to the relaxation that it needs. Regular massages will relax your muscles and help your body to release the toxins that have built up and will set your body on a path of better health. Also the fact that these Chinese people have chosen this as their profession and I pray that they make enough money to warrant their staying in our community. (I may have to move to China if they close up shop here in Auburn......LOL) I'm 85 years old and consider myself extremely lucky that I started getting massages 33 years ago. That folks, is one reason that I am in such good health and can take a deep massage. Not all folks my age can take the deep massage that I prefer. Treat your body to a relaxing massage. You will thank yourself over and over again If you start early, you will help your body more than you realize. One last word of caution for you, please don't take to heart a bad review on any massage therapist. Your body needs their help. It's up to you to provide that service to your body. Last weekend my friend and I were celebrating her birthday with foot massages. We ended up taking advantage of the great combo special and for just $5 more we upgraded to a full body massage. I usually go to a spa but am sick and tired of having the same experience. You know the one where they rub oil on you, burn smelly candles, and talk your ear off. Not to mention, the massage is never a complete hour. I treated myself to a private room and got the best deep tissue massage ever! And, for only $45 (minus the tip I left her). I was originally going to just have the massage out in the open and came with a sports bra but that ended up not being an issue because when you get your own room, you take everything off except your undies. Be sure to wear some! I didn't and it was a little embarrassing. Oh well :) The masseuse I had didn't know much English and didn't explain any of what she was going to do. Not a problem for me but for some it might be. She did climb on the table and do tons of deep tissue massaging. read more

Been going occasionally for a couple years. You get a $25 massage. While there's other options on the menu, including full body where you're taken into a creepy back room, the $25 massage is what you want. This place would be much more beneficial if one spoke Mandarin. Or someone there spoke even a little English. Being able to say "I've got a knot on the left side of my back" or "Don't try working on this area, it's injured and hurts" is not something you can do here. I've gone so far as to take a photograph of the awesome Tiger Balm-like stuff they have. I show it the the massage therapist. Sometimes they understand, and bring it out for the parts of me I point to. Last night, I showed the photograph, pointed to my lower back, and for some inexplicable reason, they brought out the cups. If you're looking for a cheap hour massage this is the place to go. You're in a dark room with other people around you getting a massage at the same time. It's not the most private but the atmosphere is relaxing enough for you to enjoy yourself. Some of the people giving the massages can be a bit harsh though and put way too much pressure on you. read more

I just came back from my first massage there. I had a great experience. I have a froze shoulder and my upper back has been very tight. So I went there to get a 30 min. body massage. I'd been to a place just like this in Seattle when I used to live there, and my experience was not so great (quick jerky stretching or rubbing of the legs that were irritating instead of feeling good). So when I showed up today at Red Lantern, I told the therapist that I had a hurt shoulder, and I also wanted a light massage. He did exactly that, and it was just perfect for what I needed. His name was Tum (Tom?) and I'm planning to go back there soon. There are so many styles of massage, and that as someone else pointed out in the reviews, you would have to ask for what you need, I think. I'm actually used to deep tissue massage, but today, I wanted light massage (Swedish type) because I had not had massage for many months, and knew that the deep massage would give me sore muscle. read more

I really wanted to like this place since my parents are raving about it. But you get what you pay for! $20 for one hour foot reflexology and body massage. I call it the one hour never ending torture! It started out ok with a warm foot soak while you sit and they start massaging your neck. Not relaxing but effective if you have stiff muscles. Then you lay down and the horror starts. They hit your back part and legs, they pull your fingers and toes and snap the tips in a very painful way. My girl started scratching my head and then grabbing my hair and pull on it!!! And last but not least when they finally start massaging your back, they pull your skin so hard I actually screamed out loud it hurt that bad. My best friend right next to me had the same bad experience. Today we have bruises on our back and feel like we have been hit by a truck. I am on 1000 mg of ibuprofen. Never ever!!!!!! read more

Definitely odd. I guess I am overly used to Swedish massage as one reviewer wrote. The massage is loud which kept making me laugh. Thumping your back then finish with a clap, grab each of your fingers and pull them so they make a pop sound etc. For the price I felt like I got a massage and it felt good. It was just more of an experience. I felt like I was in a nail salon for a bit as the masseuses kept talking to each other in Chinese and laughing and I felt like they were laughing at me (probably). It was much nicer when they decided to be quiet (except my masseuse burped a few times). Haha. And you are in a room with other people and one person made a few groans of satisfaction that made it very uncomfortable. But in the end, I would suggest to try it. It is something very different. Massage is worth the $. Don't expect a Swedish massage. Don't expect to overly relax, but your muscles will feel better. Oh and get the foot massage it really is a neck, shoulder, and foot massage. read more

First I walk in and the lady is resting on the couch ask her how much for my shoulders and would like the chair style massage and she says $25 for 30 minuets. I said do you take cards, she said "yes " so I said " ok let's do it". As we walk past the chair she woke up a man sleeping in the corner. The massage was way too hard kept telling him too hard, he would lighten up then it was harder. I have had massages before and they always massage out your arms after an upper body massage( which is what I needed the most) he did not do that at all. Go to pay and she shows me that it is $26 to use my card. I said "what? why didn't you say that before!" Services rendered (not happy though) so I pay. Btw.
