Red Mesa was our option for "late night bites" in Traverse City. I thank you for this. Tremendously. Super cozy Mexican vibes. We started with some specialty margaritas, the cherry being my favorite! So yummy! A must! We opted for some chips, salsa, queso to start. The portions are large & delicious. He got the quesabirria, it was awesome. We had to take the Dulche De Leche Cake home, and it was the perfect ending!

Seated promptly for a party of 5. Ordered chips and salsa appetizer (no longer complimentry), chorizo and cheese quesadilla with pico de gallo, burrito with refried beans & Mexican rice, pulled pork carnitas enchiladas plate includes three enchiladas rice and beans. Prompt helpful service. Chairs had puddles of liquid on them upon being ready to seat our party, alerted the wait staff and they promptly wiped down. Disappointed the chips and salsa are no longer complementary. Good quality food, nice portions. I mostly go here because the location is near the hotels along the highway.

Very interesting atmosphere, spent most of the meal trying to figure out where they source their puppets. We had the birria and elote tamale which were both pretty good, the armadillo eggs and chips and salsa were a hit. Would totally come again.

Delicious, fresh, and real food. I was in town with family at a lake house for the holiday long weekend and a few of us ate lunch at Red Mesa. We had pleasant service and enjoyed the atmosphere. Everybody liked their entrées.

Service was great. The salsa tastes like it's from a jar and not fresh. The pork taco was delicious and I loved the Smokey refried beans. The steak fajitas were good. The fried ice cream is a must try . The ice cream is covered in Texas toast and then deep fried. It's covered with a habanero chocolate sauce. It's not spicy and the habanero flavor isn't strong. There is a bar. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Prices are reasonable.

This place was a throwback for me as I haven't been here in probably 15 years. The wait staff were friendly and the food was yummy. The queso was on point and had the right about of spice. I enjoyed the pork flautas...mmm and that side of sauce was a nice compliment. I will say the drinks were a little chewy - I think some of the margaritas could have been drained better to make them more of a drink. While the garnish looked pretty, it made it hard to drink. Something to think about when ordering fancy margaritas. Overall good experience

I love Mexican food. I would consider myself somewhat of an expert in the Mexican food consuming field. This is the farthest I've ever got from Mexican food at a Mexican restaurant. The steak was like dog food. Little chewy chunks with no flavor and a funky smell. The shrimp was cold and tasteless. The service was slow and I only seen our server twice during our visit. As I'm sitting here letting my food digest I can feel it tearing me up from the inside. I wouldn't go here unless you wanna get over charged and leave depressed because you feel as if you just got robbed, paying $18 for dogfood warmed up is crazy. On a side note nice bathrooms clean and smelling good. P.s. where all my Mexican workers at??? Only white women and shiny head white man and two lonely amigos

Honestly, the best home cooked style Mexican food in Traverse City, and it's not even close. Kind of a down and dirty spot, but pleasant enough visually. Sometimes the place is filled with smoke and fryer grease fumes. I won't go in when it's like that. And hopefully they get it worked out. No alcohol served (that I'm aware of) Sadly, staff attitudes, dismissiveness, disrespectful attitudes toward customers, often closed during open hours, with no sign. If you come in within 15 minutes of closing, they will announce to you that "We are closing." We've seen it happen to a number of guests, who are wondering what they did wrong, to get scolded. The staff apparently feels, if the restaurant closes at 7 PM, they should be walking out the door at 7:01 PM. That would be nice, but that's not how it works. What this tells us is, there is a skilled Mexican chef, real home cooking, behind this place. But there is no management skill or discipline. That also makes me worry about cleanliness and sanitation, because if you have no principles and no guidance or leadership, you can't expect a staff of, essentially children, to perform as adult professionals. Probably the hardest review I've ever had to write, and I hope they fix the BS with the staff. Food is absolutely delicious.

My boyfriend and I both agreed that the Pollo taco was too salty, probably due to the corn nuts sprinkled on top. We split a mango margarita and it was soooo good! Great mango flavor and a tajin rim really sealed the deal. Our bartender also split the drink into two smaller glasses without us even asking! Really great service here. The interior is pretty small and there's as much seating outdoors as indoors. They did apologize for what it's worth. The menu was appealing with just enough offered. To start the meal, the salad ($15) was ordered. It was made up of romaine, sweet corn, radish, orange, pepitas, pickled red onion, beans, queso fresco, and a creamy citrus vinaigrette. The salad appeared very fresh with a light dressing aspect. I did not think I would like the oranges, but they were a nice touch. Everything really went well with one another. I had one of each of their tacos ($5 each). One of them was out, so I was unable to try them all unfortunately. My thoughts on each are below. All of their tortillas were homemade and of good size. They seemed to be in the middle of a street and normal size taco. Each taco was also stuffed. Pollo - This was with a chicken tinga, garlic cilantro sauce, pickled onion, corn nut, and cilantro. This was alright. For some reason, it reminded me of a curry. I suppose it was coming from the tinga flavor profile from the chicken? Not sure. Carne Asada - This came with mojo de ajo steak, smoked jalapeno crema, fingerling potato chip, pickled onion, and cilantro. This had good flavor with a nice cook on the steak. The smoked jalapeno crema was unique and tasty. Panza - This was a taco with crispy pork belly, Morita gastrique, pickled apple and jicama, chicharrónes, and cilantro. This was my favorite one. There was a sweet and spicy factor from the Morita, which was great and I really enjoyed it. The pork belly was very flavorful and was cooked ideally too. Pescado - This had a fried mahi piece, red cabbage slaw, mint, orange, avocado crema, house hot sauce, and cilantro. This was way too sweet. There was a nice fry on the mahi and of good size, but it was far too sweet for me. There needed to be more hot sauce. Shrimp - This had achiote marinated shrimp, house hot sauce, lime crema, crispy carrot, and cilantro. This was decent. There were three large shrimp present. I just was not too high on the shrimp seasoning as something threw me off. Will I go back? Yeah, I would.

I love that I can choose the Thai chili tofu as my protein, and it's actually good tofu -- firm, crispy, and flavorful instead of the usual mushy version you find elsewhere. The customization is another huge plus. You can load your tacos with far more than the standard lettuce and tomato, choosing from a variety of slaws, salsas, sauces, and toppings. My personal favorite combination is the Dirty Sauce (definitely spicy, so be warned!) with lettuce, poblanos, onions, and the corn mix. The tacos are generously sized, so 2-3 will leave you completely satisfied, and the pricing is very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. This is also a perfect place for larger groups or families. We have friends who love bringing their kids because everyone can fill out their own order form and customize exactly what they want. I have to recommend the salsa roja and chips as an app. It's easily one of my favorite salsas. It has the perfect consistency with just the right balance of spice and sweetness. We love coming here and highly recommend giving it a try. You won't be disappointed!
