We went Last December and it was pretty good. good for group. However, we went this last weekend. it was horrible. they change the menu without price $$ on it. Order chicken bbq sandwich is worst of all bbq because it is no favor. Sauce was watery and no favor. We can tell that potato salad is coming from food store preparing box. they aren't serve blackberry tea anymore. My husband tried to order rib and they aren't have anymore. Mac cheese was bit overcooking. my daugther order grilled cheese and it isn't good. i can do it better at my home. What happen??? seem old employees are not there anymore. We won't come again. We recently visited Red Pig BBQ and had a pretty mixed experience. The BBQ itself was decent, nothing that blew me away, but definitely solid. The twice baked potatoes were also good and probably one of the highlights of the meal. Unfortunately, things went downhill with my sandwich order. It was made incorrectly, and when the issue was brought up, I could hear the owner in the back insisting that it had been made correctly. After two employees checked the receipt AND the sandwich, it was remade. On top of that, there was some uncomfortable tension as the owner was openly arguing with staff members while customers were present. Overall, the food was okay in parts, but the service and atmosphere really took away from the experience. Definitely not a place to dine peacefully. This town has so many BBQ restaurants and I enjoy eating at about everyone of them. This place is one of the best in town. The staff were great and courteous. The food was all great and delicious. The restraunt was busy and kind of loud but it wasn't anything no different than any other place. I highly recommend trying this place out if you can. We tried this restaurant a number of years ago and were unhappy with the food quality. However, after hearing of an ownership change we tried them again and were really impressed!! On entry the restaurant was very clean, new tables and chairs and we were greeted by the very personable manager. He took our order and payment and we had our dinner promptly. Overall, the food was very good. Some comments : Pulled pork sandwich - tasty, moist, well cooked and stacked high. Three bbq sauces on the table were all excellent. Some suggestions - would have enjoyed more smoke flavor and the cole slaw topping was very bland. Side dishes - potato salad - delicious!!, baked beans - very good. First time eating there. Being from down east in NC, I am use to a different taste in BBQ. They had a lot of different foods to try. I enjoyed those oven baked fries, I think you get a lot of food for your money. My dinning experience would have been more pleasant if the staff looked a bit pleasant. They looked as if they did not want to be there or want me to be there. Regardless, the food was hot and tasty. Next time I visit my BFF I don't think I will eat there again though. read more

We've eaten here several times over a number of years and most of the time it's been very good with plenty of food for a reasonable price. we might have had an ok meal very few times. Great Barbecue in the tri-cities! Had the jumbo pulled port sandwich and added the vinegar slaw, eastern style and the house sweet sauce. Had a 1/2 & 1/2 tea and it was still super sweet. I asked the gal working on the way out if that was normal and she told me they pride themselves on having "The sweetest tea" in the whole area...bold but I can attest to her statement. I've been coming here since I was 5 and I've never been disappointed. The decor hasn't changed and I'm happy about that. It's comfortable and the previous owner and the owner now we're and are amazing. The staff is always really sweet and helpful. The bbq is always so moist and delicious. Do yourself a favor and go elseswhere if you want good BBQ and sides. But we were in Johnson City, so thought we'd try the Red Pig. We ordered 1/2 rack of ribs and 2 sides, and a large pork platter and 2 sides, to go. First, they didn't package it as a to-go order, so we had to wait on that. Then, we get home and find we were shorted 1 side. And, there was no toast with either order - either we were shorted that too or that only comes with eat-in orders. The ribs were not meaty and were dry. The pork BBQ was ok but Food City does equally well. The mac and cheese was institutional in flavor and no better than what Food City does for a more reasonable price. So if you want good BBQ and sides, drive to Phil's Dream Pit in Kingsport. If you want average BBQ and sides, go to Food City and save a lot of money. PS: they have a sign that says check your to-go order before you leave. We were in a hurry but should have. Now I know why they have that sign - you have to do their work for them because they don't do it for you. read more

This is one of the best BBQ places I have ever been! The pork and chicken sandwiches with slaw on them rock! They also have some rockin' sweet tea! The owner comes around and refills your drinks to make sure your cup will never go dry. It is an in-and-out place to eat. You can get it pretty quick and its also great to-go. We are new to the area and wanted to try a couple of options for our younger family. We asked for extra plates, 2 water cups and a to go box when finished. We were informed that they charge for water cups after the fact. We would Have ordered the family meal (if we could have eaten in, but that was not an option). We spent $10 more than the family meal and also bought a cookie (they were out of the 2/1.50) so we bought a large one and split it for the boys. The food was good! The service was the WORST. This is a place you really want to root for - over 20 years in the same location and when I first moved to Johnson City the owner always greeted guests as they came into the restaurant. All you can say about the restaurant and dining experience is basic .. which is not always a bad thing .. many BBQ joints are just that and it is okay. I would have to say that the dine in experience is not the best .. one big room with basic tables and pretty loud if many people are dining. There are really no comfort factors involved which would make it a little warmer or more comfortable. I had heard many great things about Red Pig and it was a must try and I must say that my first times visiting I thought the food was good and the staff went out of their way to make sure me and my guests had a great meal. We tried both the pulled pork and the ribs with several sides including coleslaw, potato salad and baked beans. It was recommended that I try the sour slaw so we got one of both and I was not a big fan of the sour slaw -- I know it can be quite tasty but here I think it was a bit off and not a big favorite. The pulled pork just did not seem that "meaty" to me -- but the coleslaw and bun help and I would rate it as average - I have had much better. The ribs were the best part and pretty meaty and nice smokey taste. I have since ordered them through double time, a great local delivery service, and was less impressed.. I am sensing things have changed and I think the quality has suffered. BBQ is a battlefield and you really need to be on the top of your game to succeed and I really hope Red Pig does that and I can revisit with a better ranking in the future. read more

I grew up in Johnson City; I have loved Red Pig for years. However, after returning to Johnson City last month for a visit, i made my way to Red Pig as fast as I could. I was disappointed to discover that the pulled pork sandwich and beans don't taste as they had just a few years before. What has happened to Red Pig? If they have changed the way you smoke the meat, I would ask the new owner to please consider going back to the old method. Our family has renamed this business the grumpy pig! The cashier up front must have had a ham bone stuck up her..... well you know where I'm going with this. While ordering we mentioned we were new to the area and were ordering platters to share. We wanted to see what we all liked. When the order came out we had to ask for extra plates which evidently was the end of the world. And upon leaving my mother in law was talked down to stating they "doubled checked our ticket and we had 2 water cups that wasn't paid for." Sorry but in most restaurants water is a courtesy and if it was a problem you should have stated so when i asked for an extra water for my 4 year old. also we only went off of the menu on the wall. We were never given a menu or explained anything. This honestly was the worst restaurant experience. My poor kid went to buy a cookie and the lady was again just plain nasty so much so my kid (4 years old) asked why she is so crabby. My mother in law paid another 4 dollars on the Way out for the "water cups" and mentioned we will NOT BE RETURNING!! So grumpy pig I hope you teach the front cashier some patience and kindness because your food was good. It's a shame we won't return. We have a very large family that we would have loved to invite! it's just a shame that it's a veteran runner business and treats people with that much disrespect. read more

The best description for the ribs would be fall off the bone cooked in a slow cooker. If you like the style of rib. For us, it tasted like boiled ribs tastes with sauce. The sauce on the side had too vinegar and it just made things worst. I think the first warning was the cashier behind the counter recommended their best dish is a double bake potatoes. Frankly, I'm not sure how I feel about this place. It's a decent meal, better than fast food for the price of fast food, but I've certainly had better barbecue. Both times I've been here, I've opted for the small barbecue sandwich and drink deal for $5.99. My boyfriend ordered their fries, and while I'll give them credit for not being greasy, they weren't well salted and lacked flavor overall. I believe they're baked rather than fried. This is the kind of place I want to succeed; a small local joint.
