This is my "go to" favorite restaurant in the La Crosse/Onalaska area. The food is consistently good to excellent. The setting on Lake Onalaska provides beautiful views. The ambience inside is relaxed Northwoods. The service is invariably good in our experience- but this not a fast food joint. The place is often very busy on Fridays (for good reason) for the Friday fish specials. You may have to wait for a table but it is worth it. In addition there is a large selection of beers and wines and specialty cocktails. I highly recommend Red Pines. read more

First time here and I'm already planning on how to convince my husband we need to travel 4 hours to go out to eat! The location is nice and quiet, away from the main road and located on the banks of the backwater of the Mississippi. The view from the patio gives you the water and the main channel farther out, plus the bluffs on the neighboring side. The day was beautiful and we decided to sit outside. You can tell that the patio is equipped to be used into later in the fall with roll down curtains and heaters. I will say that the chairs, while comfortable, were so slung back that I had to sit on a blanket so I didn't feel like I was eating while reclined. The menu was incredibly varied. It was hard to make a choice. I saw that the cheese curds had placed 3rd in voting and so I ordered some. WHAT!!!! These were the best curds I have ever had. If these were 3rd place, I obviously can't believe what could have beat them. The batter on them was so very light, it was like eating air. The cheese was even light. Having had big, heavy curds before, I don't know how they could have made them so light. It must have been magic. Folks, I'm serious. If I could have picked up the basket and licked it, I would have. I had the salad with cranberries, walnuts and bleu cheese. It was so good. The only complaint I might have had was that there were too many walnuts. Yes, too many of an ingredient. But my friend was more than willing to help me out by eating some of them. (They are lightly coated with a sweet substance-sugar?) Service was fine, I think our server had other duties inside and so that kept her out of our sight. My friend was feeling a little impatient, but I thought the flow of service was fine. So, I told my husband about this place and mentioned that they serve walleye cheeks and he was all..."Those are good eating. Almost as good as Snapper throats." Ummmm. Just left here from a lunch outing with my wife, was recommended this place by my boss and his his wife. Food was good and the waitress was great. My wife ordered the Red Pine Special and I ordered the Haddock fish tacos, with an order of catfish bites (appetizer). The only thing I could've wished better was some outside space to enjoy some of the great Wisconsin weather. You are correct there was patio space however the only available space that wasn't taken outside was directly in the sun under the umbrella. Unfortunately we got there too late to acquire patio space . We will arrive much earlier next time to get on the patio before the snow comes. Thank you for the response!! read more

Dropped 2 stars off of my rating and here's why... In the past year they have doubled the size of their dining room but haven't added a single square inch to their kitchen. They now insert a little note into menu's (or maybe payment folders??) essentially saying....."we are experiencing much longer waits here than normal. Sorry about that but our food is made from scratch so it's worth the wait"..... um nope. We used to come in here once a week at least and always with friends from out of town. The last 3 times we have visited our wait has been 1 hr and 15 (shortest wait). Needless to say we are in search of our next regular restaurant. It makes me so sad actually! read more

Oh my goodness, my kids took me here for my birthday and aside from the lengthy wait time, service was outstanding, and the food was amazing! They need to add a whole double size of their restaurant! I don't even know if that would satisfy the crowd lol. Absolutely incredible food! The fish tacos were the best I've ever had!!! And I would/will stand in a 2-3 hour line with the dozen of us again just to have them. Everyone I was seated with wanted to taste everything everyone else had...cuz of how absolutely yummy everything looked. We did feel a little pressed to leave quickly so others could sit and have dinner, and definitely didn't want to be the reason others were waiting as long as we had. We found this on Yelp when we were driving back to Minneapolis. It was Friday night at dinner time and the line was huge! We decided to tough it out and got a number. We stood in the crowed bar and watched part of the Brewers playoff (Its Wisconsin after all!) it was actually a lot of fun. It made the wait for the table fly. We both ordered the lake perch. It was tremendous! The service was good. The sides were delicious too. Nice salad (the blue cheese was so good) and the baked beans were yummy. Okay, so we actually purchased a house in La Crosse and Red Pines really IS my regular hang-out when I'm in town. I have to now give it a well-deserved 5 stars. I have tried quite a few things on the menu and everything is spot on! I still live in Forest Park, where the competition between restaurants is pretty tight, but this place would easily stand out. Friday night fish is a midwestern tradition. It was one of the best versions I've had in a long time. I made the mistake of ordering the batter-fried walleye and should have ordered it pan-fried. Visited one time while in the area from out of town. My food was adequate (I just ordered a simple chicken breast dish), but the atmosphere was great. Staff was friendly, service was good and the views from the patio can't be beat. Food prep time seems to be an issue (I read on some other reviews, heard a nearby table ask why their food was taking so long, and my chicken breast on rice took 40 minutes), but overall I enjoyed my experience. We were visiting from out of town and after some research decided on this place because of the patio overlooking the river. It was about 42° outside and when we sat in the patio they had it heated to about 90°. It was uncomfortably hot in there. I asked the waitress if she could turn the heat down a bit but I believe she turned it off because after about 15 minutes it became very cold. So I guess your options are sweat to death or freeze. On to the food.... I ordered the pan-fried perch, which came out very greasy and dull in color. As i started to eat I kept getting tiny pin bones stuck into my tongue. Every bite had bones. I couldn't eat it because I couldn't take all the bones out, I was nibbling on tiny pieces. Finally I gave up after picking through 2 pieces and mentioned it to the waitress who replied "that's the risk you take when you order fish". .... Um. Excuse me? Yes I can understand a few bones. But this was way more than a few. The manager eventually came over and took the fish off our bill but still charged me for the salad and side, which I think came to like $7 in itself but whatever I just wanted to leave. Final thoughts, wont be back, won't recommend, and we ended up going to Applebee's when we got back home because I was starving. read more

Stopped in for an evening meal as a last stop before heading home to Michigan. A busy place along the river where people seemed to enjoy the atmosphere and a relaxed meal. My husband and I both ordered the lake perch which was very good and sweet potato waffle fries. The fries were tasty but a little soggy. We ordered a piece of carrot cake to share and it was excellent! They were slow to remove our empty plates and make sure our meals were okay, but overall it was a good meal. We especially liked the "Pay it Forward" chalkboard where local friends and family can leave food or drink tabs for one another. read more
