We went for Friday Fish fry. The walleye was delicious, but the sides???? Sweet potato fries are doused in cinnamon and sugar! Not edible. Had to return them for regular fries. The cole slaw had way too much vinegar/dressing, too. We also got pretty poor service. Waitress had a flippant and bad attitude and it took a very long time to get our food despite it slowing down and being around 7 before we sat and ordered. We were lucky enough to spending the weekend at an AirBnB in the area and stumbled upon the Red Pines. We noticed the full parking lot on a Friday night and decided to give it a try. We ordered drinks at the bar and sat outside while waiting for our table. Once seated for dinner, the service was friendly and quick. I had the beer battered haddock and my husband had the walleye. Both were exceptional. I will also add that the "side salad" I received before my meal was the freshest and most delicious plate of greens I have ever had in a restaurant! All of the staff we encountered were exceptionally friendly, the atmosphere was upbeat and we've already recommended Red Pines to our friends and family who live in the area. I think that this place is very good. The walleye cheeks are fantastic! The salad's are fresh and very filling. Service is exceptional and the manager is actively working the floor to ensure that things are running smoothly. I'm very impressed with the work staff and the quality (and quantity) of the food. Loved this place. The staff was great, if not a bit too happy to help (is this a problem?). The food was outstanding and super reasonably priced. The view was great, especially if you sit outside. The atmosphere was oddly northwoods which was only odd because it's on a beautiful stretch of water in Onalaska not Eagle River. But the food was top notch. We had the pork sandwich which was possibly one of the best I've ever had. And the lake perch was fantastic. But the sweet potato fries were the real standout, they were perfect and amazingly tasty. We also had a giant pretzel which was great. I'm a big fan. The drinks were cheap and well made with generous pours. Certainly better than you find elsewhere. Overall it was a great spot. Go there. Restaurant culture in Wisconsin is known for a handful of notable traditions - supper clubs, the Friday fish fry, beer, cheese curds, sweet cocktails, rural bar/restaurants - the list goes on... Red Pines takes a bit of all of these elements, mashes them together, and puts it in a small rustic themed lodge overlooking the shores of Lake Onalaska/Mississippi River. It's not a fancy restaurant and an intimate setting but it offers one of the best gastro pub experiences in the area with some great traditional Wisconsin staples. I have been here at least 15 times in the past several years and although I haven't tried everything, I don't recall ever being disappointed. In my opinion, their pan fried perch dinner is hands down the best in the area; it's not deep fried in heavy batter like the majority of fish fries I have been to. Staying with the fish theme, my favorite meal - The Wally, which is a fish sandwich with a fillet of pan fried walleye (or deep fried if you prefer) on it that is the size of your face. Roll up your sleeves and get extra napkins, you'll need them. Other recommendations - the walleye cheeks are awesome, the cheese curds are some of the best in the area, and their pizza is surprisingly good - it's not an over cheesed pot pie like you often find in places like this. Bottom line is that it is one of my family's favorite places for informal dining. However, be warmed that this is not a large place and it can get packed, especially on Fridays. We tend to come early with the kids to avoid the rush. Earlier in the week is usually a age bet as well. read more

Always great food-especially fish Fridays (with shrimp) honestly, need to charge more for the Friday fish dinners IMHO. Tap beer is always nice and cold-with new flavors being brought in regularily. Bartenders (esp Brandon) are very friendly and outgoing. Ownership is very hands on and will address even the slighest imperfections within your visit (IF you have any). We love this place! Food is amazing. Always tasty and plentiful. Have never had a bad meal. Friday nights are super busy, so either go early or plan on a long wait. Usually slows down a little by 8. On Saturday nights they have music which is nice. If we go then,we usually just order a ton of appetizers with our drinks. Stopped here on our way to Minneapolis. We sat outside overlooking the lake. The bloody Mary's were good. The burgers were tasty and the cheese curds light and delicious. Our waitress was friendly and the rest of the staff we encountered were very welcoming. The bees were pesty but that's of no fault of the restaurant. Came down to visit our son and his girl friend at UW-LaCrosse and took them out to lunch. They researched and came up with Red Pines Bar and Grill. Set on a beautiful spot in Onalaska, you feel like you are in the northern woods. Walked in around 1:30pm and were seated right away. We were offered the breakfast menu as it is served until 2pm. There are many mouthwatering options on the breakfast menu. We stuck with the regular menu which had quite a variety. Our server greeted us took our beverage order and tactfully mentioned that she had only started a two weeks ago. The way she stated this was very good- I did not anticipate problems nor did I feel this was a preemptive effort to not care about giving good service. I ordered the pesto linguine with chicken and French onion soup. Later I was told they were out of the French onion soup. I was offered another soup or a salad. I opted for the salad. Salad arrived- and the lettuce appeared well on the way to being wilted... perhaps it was prepped the day before and the plastic wrap was not on it well? It tasted ok. 40 min from placing our order and I am about to inquire about the meals when they come out. I not sure why the order took so long, perhaps the waitress is still learning the timing aspect of tables versus demand in the kitchen. The linguine was GREAT! I have been disappointed in the past with bland cream sauce with a dish like this, but this was excellent, great flavor and the sliced grilled chicken was not tough or over cooked from being in the hot pasta.
