I will sound a familiar Yelp refrain in stating that I "really wanted to like this place," but a couple of drawbacks prevented me from doing so wholeheartedly. On a lonely stretch of Highway 11 a few miles south of Natural Bridge State Park, the Red River Rockhouse has charm to spare. From the road, it looks like it might be a rough-and-tough roadhouse, which might have been great in its own right (and which it might have in fact been at one time). But inside is a relaxed little cafe with minimalistic, natural, almost Nordic decor. The small-ish menu features simple, inexpensive, appealing items (burgers, sandwiches, etc.) prepared with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, and there is a surprisingly good beer list (the Rockhouse is just over the Wolfe County line from dry Powell County, home to the state park and Red River Gorge). But despite the best intentions of the owners, there were some rough spots here. The service was quite friendly, but the wait for our very simple food was absurdly long. Even though the restaurant was only about half full, it took more than a half-hour for our orders to come out. I'm not lying when I say that it looked as though the kitchen was sending out only two plates of food every five minutes. As for the food itself, it did seem very fresh. The braised pork in my tacos was delicious--well-seasoned and juicy--but the corn tortillas immediately broke in half, apparently because they weren't griddled or otherwise heated, so I was left with a basket full of busted-up tortillas to fork-and-knife my way through. The wife reported that her veggie burrito was only OK--filled with fresh ingredients, but a little lackluster. We also had an order of sweet-potato fries; they were quite good. I can see that the Red River Rockhouse could warrant these five-star reviews on a given night, but it unfortunately did not on the night we were there. We will be back the next time we are at the Gorge, though. read more

This is a restaurant I really enjoyed. I opted to eat outside at an available table, which is always a must if possible in the Red River Gorge area. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with a side of sweet potato fries. The burger itself was delicious. If I had to nitpick I'd say the hamburger bun was kind of crumbly, but other than that, no complaints. Honestly, the sweet potato fries were the highlight of my meal. The only way they could've been improved would be with some sort of marshmallow flavored dipping sauce. They offer local & farm fresh American food that will give you the energy you need. They are sustainable and super environmentally friendly, so you can feel good supporting them! Food: A twist on all the American favorites. Local and organic ingredients used whenever possible. Menu items such as pork/potato pancakes, omelet's, chipotle burritos, grass fed burgers with shitake mushrooms, tacos, and chips and guacamole to name a few. Tons of options, and plenty that are kid friendly! Drinks: Soda, Izze sparkling juice, draft and bottled beers Service: This is a place where you can visit once and already feel like a regular. The staff is extremely friendly, attentive, and has super quick service. Perfect for a hungry bunch of climbers! Ambiance: Rockhouse is a charming restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating options. The décor is rustic with a unique twist - local photographer prints of nature line the walls, and each table and chairs is a little different than the next. The uniqueness gives it a truly warm and homey feeling, rather than a cookie cutter restaurant. It's also a nice spot to meet other people who also enjoy the outdoors and exchange stories! I had a lovely experience at Red River Rockhouse. The food was fresh and much of it is locally sourced. The veggie burger that I ordered was homemade and was among the better ones I've had. My lunch companion's beef burger was good. Both of our fries (sweet potato for me and regular for her) lacked crispness, which is only a minor complaint in the big scheme of things. The Nutella brownie that we split for dessert was delicious and made by Martine's Pastries in Lexington, according to the staff member we asked. I secretly wanted the carrot cake (made in-house) but there was only one slice left in the display case and I feared it would be stale. Folks around us were enjoying burritos, which I plan on ordering next time. They looked to be griddled on a flat-top. Staff was hospitable and efficient. The restaurant is utterly charming and quaint. It is a very comfortable place to spend an hour or so and re-fuel. read more

This place is really interesting, when you arrive it looks like you're pulling into a hotel, but when you walk in it's amazing. Very unique decor almost like something from the 60's or 70's. Comfy clean and bright! They offer sandwiches/burgers and brews/whisky. Everything was handmade and fresh to order and boy was it delicious. We had blt with their fries and grilled cheese and salsa. The salsa was a little different than what we're used to but it was still good. read more

What a nice surprise in the Gorge! My boyfriend and I visited Red River Gorge for the first time this weekend and got so hungry after our hiking. The places right by the natural bridge were so packed we decided to drive out further. I'm SO glad we did. This place is farm-to-table. It's rustic with some great eats. We had guacamole and chips (guac needed more salt), BLT, burger and fries. Everything was delicious. My only complaint was the extremely long wait when the place wasn't very crowded. read more

This place is a freakin diamond in the rough. I was not expecting such delicious and high quality food in Campton Kentucky. Maybe I was just starving from climbing all day or maybe the food was just that good. More than likely it was both. I love the atmosphere and how fresh / local all the food and selections are. Apparently the meat for the burgers is locally sourced which is awesome. The two lines for food and drinks is genius because you can drink your beer in line while you wait to order your food which may or may not be a while. Bless the climbing community for having a plethora of vegans because finding tempeh on the menu is pretty rare so naturally I had to order the tempeh burrito with green salsa. The tallish blonde with blue eyes working the register was super cool and adorable and I think I want to be her best friend. My burrito was absolutely delicious. I think think I could eat that tempeh burrito every weekend and never get tired of it. I also got to try the carrot cake which was stellar. My only complaint is that there's only four draft beer selections so it'd be nice to have more options. Their canned / bottled selection was limited but had excellent choices. So doggone good. Quaint but lovely inside with some outdoor seating. My family of 4 (including 2, 13 year olds) love it so much they say it's worth the 2.5 drive just to eat there alone (we live in Cincinnati). Great burgers and burritos. Not a huge menu but it just means they can focus on a few items and make them fantastic. There aren't many restaurants in RRG, but this is definitely the best we've tried that pleases everyone. We've been twice and going back a third time this April. Hope they are open then because they do have some very random hours depending on the season I guess. After being to the Red River Gorge to climb several times and also being a total foodie, prior to the RRR being here, the food options in Slade were pretty dismal. Yes, there's Miguel's, which is awesome in it's own right, but there were times when I was simply in the mood for a nice, juicy burger or some comfort food and a nice, cold beer. RRR totally has got you covered, and you definitely can't argue with the fact that they go for organic, locally sourced foods whenever they can. For breakfast, you can't beat the porktato pancakes (amazerful! try it with guac!) and the tacos are pretty good too (go for soft, the hard tacos kinda fall apart). Lasty, the carrot cake & brownies are just to DIE for...they will forever be in my dreams haha! Check it out, this place is the good stuff. read more

Finally stopped here on my 3rd trip to the red. I always believed it was a more traditional dining experience and the line was always out the door so I never figured to stop. But this time I committed and realized it's a quick service place where you order at a counter and take a number! The staff was friendly and helpful, the service was extremely quick, it was an artsy atmosphere and the tofu burrito was bigger than my head and so delicious, especially after a day of climbing. We spent the day hiking and wanted to have dinner nearby. I used the spotty cell service to check yelp for some ideas as there was a line out the door at the other option. This place was crowded, but service was as fast as possible. The staff were all friendly, and happy to answer questions. The food options were good, and could be modified to meet dietary needs. The beer selection was great, and made me very sad there are no sales on Sunday. We had a burger, burrito, and a quesadilla. Everyone was happy and full when we left. We had heard good thing about RRR so we decided to make a trip to the gorge and try it out for ourselves. They offer a nice of selection of locally grown and harvested food, which we both liked and wish more restaurants operated like that. We took our 8 month old with us so we were hoping that they had child seats available (which they did) when I got out of the car I asked one of the employees if they did and he gave me a sour look and mumbled something as he walked off. I seen him do that to another person while I was eating also. They were very busy and had people filtering in and out which is a good sign. They got my order right but my fiancé ask for no rice in her burrito and it came with rice. Honest mistake but she didn't end up eating a large portion of it because of that. Overall we enjoyed RRR and will be back to try out other items on the menu. After a grueling day of climbing in the Gorge, Red River Rockhouse is the place to go!! One cool thing about this place is that all their coffee/produce/meat products from local farms in the area. I ordered the Barbacoa tacos and a draft beer. The service was great- everyone was very friendly and our food got out to us in a timely fashion (an even more important matter after you've been outside all day!). The tacos were fresh, filling, and delicious. The beer, cold and crisp. I can't wait to go back to this place the next time I come to The Gorge. read more

Not sure if it is simply that any meal tastes emavulate after a whole day of climbing but I'm pretty sure Rockhouse's burritos may be the best thing to eat within several hundred miles of Red River Gorge. Worst case scenario, they are simply the best thing you can find in comfortable driving distance. Sure, if you want more atmosphere head to Miguel's but if you want proper food head and/or aren't feeling pizza head to Rockhouse. No better place to get burgers n beer after climbing. The outdoor seating is comfy and the staff is always friendly.

During my visit to RRG I was able to visit Rock House twice. I had the pleasure to try the heavenly cheese burger, veggie burger, chicken burrito, salsa, guacamole, carrot cake, regular fries, sweet potato fries, and two local micro brews. The Rock House locally sources their ingredients and pride themselves in quality made food from scratch. They have an informational board showing what farms they used. The service was fast. Each visit was equally exceptional and this is by far one of the best restaurants in this area. The only negative traits I found was that they were running out of food items on both visits and you can't buy kid items al a carte. read more

We had just checked in to our lodge after a long day of driving and went back out in search of a bite. We weren't expecting much, even after we pulled into this very unassuming spot. Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised at how cool this place was. It's hip, it's funky, run by younger, cool folks. All the food is locally sourced and high quality, and the beer selection is fantastic. Krissy has celiac and that is always a concern but she got the tacos and was assured that she would be okay (no sign of trouble yet). I got their burger and, hell I don't know, but that was one extraordinary burger. That last bite is one of those taste memories that I am going to carry with me for a very long time. You know what we really liked the most about this place? Seeing as how we could never make it inside, I guess we will never know. Yelp stated that it is open on Saturday from 8am - 10pm. Being from out of town and traveling through, we saw the reviews, saw it was open, so headed that way. When we got there at noon, we were shocked to see it was closed. So I got out and checked the hours on the door, which stated they opened at noon on Saturday. There aren't many choices in the area so maybe they open when they want. We parked anyway thinking someone would drive up or open a door...something. But nothing. We waited to give it a shot. Since we had a car full of hungry people and no real idea when this place would actually open, and got tired of sitting in their parking lot to wait, we had no choice but to leave. If we are in the area next time we will be sure to stop in at least an hour after they say they will be open just to be safe. read more

The restaurant is in an unassuming house off of the road. Inside, the place had a Colorado theme. The menu was written on a chalkboard, and had a limited number of items, but all looked appealing. I had a good burrito, our party also had good sandwiches (BLT, burger). Also, we had good fresh guacamole with newly-made chips. If you are staying in the area with your family, there are a limited number of choices unaffiliated with the climber's camp. This is a good choice. This is one of the few restaurants in the Red area so if you come during a peak season than be ready for line. If you compound this with the peak meal times then you got a recipe for a ridiculous wait time. Parking is a free for all and can be sketchy at times. There is some outdoor seating for the nicer days. Indoor seating a good for groups but is not assigned so you seat yourself. There are two registers, one for ordering stuff and one for just beverages. The beverage register is nice if your stuck waiting in line. If you're not from the area than know that if you're coming on Sunday they don't serve alcohol. First time I came here was on a Saturday around 7:00pm. Its was about 40*F outside and we waited about 45 min just get get into the front door. The next time we came a little earlier and the line was not as bad. Because this place is popular they do run out of popular item on the menu, so just be ready for that. Seating inside is crowded and we ended up taking our food to go. The hamburger here are a good size and taste like your standard burger, nothing too fancy. The burritos are hefty and pretty tasty. They can customize your food the way you like it and you feel pretty satiated by end. The fries here a pretty yummy. They come out darker than your standard French fries and definitely have a natural potato taste to them. All in all if you're hungry after a long day of climber or whatever than this place has some great food. Just be ready to wait for it. Also check your receipts, I found a mistake on mine which they fixed, but is annoying. read more

Not as it appears from the outside. Stop in and enjoy their locally sourced meats and veggies. There is something for everyone on the menu. I don't typically rate places with separate sides with 5 stars, but Red River Rockhouse is an exception. The chips and salsa are so fresh. The chips are thick and not overly salty. The beef for the "heavenly burger" is clearly made fresh and not preformed/frozen. The bun and toppings are nothing special but don't direct from the meal. The big ol burrito is delicious and so filling! The searing area is comfortable. There are a few tables with settings for bigger groups and plenty for parties of 4. This place is a winner! read more

Food was decent, but order was incorrect. It had already taken over a half an hour for our food to come out, so I said screw it and ate it. There is no reason for tacos to take this long, I don't care how you make them. If dirty hipsters with no common sense are your scene, you'll really enjoy this place. Overwhelming smell of dog feces every time the breeze blew sitting outside, because it seems like most people have dogs and let them use the bathroom just to the right of the entrance before they go in. Delicious. I came for breakfast and got a burrito. Stuffed full of potatoes and egg and black beans and pico degio I didn't miss the meat at all. The portions are huge and make you feel full yet light enough to take on a trail. I highly recommend giving this place a try. read more
