I opted for the bottomless mimosas (which were around $25 per person for 1.5 hours), while my husband ordered a Bloody Mary. To start, we shared the cornbread, and wow--it was absolutely delicious. I would order it again in a heartbeat. For our entrees, my husband got the catfish and grits, which he loved, and I ordered the fried chicken with cornbread waffles. It was SO good. Seriously, I can't stop thinking about it. We shared collared greens on the side and they also were amazing- they were so flavorful! I really can't choose a favorite dish. I would order exactly the same way next time (even if it was too much food ). The atmosphere was also fantastic. The restaurant feels trendy and stylish without trying too hard, and everything is done very tastefully. They also have an outdoor dining area, which we didn't use this time, but it's nice to know it's there for good weather days. My only two very minor complaints: I wish the cornbread came with a little more butter--it was just a tiny smear, so next time I'll ask for extra; And I wish they offered a hotter hot sauce option for those of us who like a bit more spice. I want to start by saying that the shrimp and grits were absolutely delicious -- honestly some of the best I've ever had. Unfortunately, after that, the rest of the experience did not meet the standard I've come to expect from a Marcus Samuelsson restaurant. I've visited Hav & Mar three times already (and actually have reservations again this Thursday!), and I've also had a wonderful experience at Metropolis, even during a chef pop-up event where the service was still top tier. That's why my Mother's Day experience was especially disappointing. From the moment we called the restaurant an hour before our 5pm reservation, to the hostess abandoning the hostess stand to look for menus and when she arrived back, called another party to seat them ahead of us and when I made her aware of this she said oh, I forgot about y'all without even looking me in my eyes, this poor service lasted until the very end of the evening, there seemed to be issues every step of the way. We sent our fish back because the sauce at the bottom was freezing cold and my mom had to ask for S&P for her entree! When we asked to pack our food to go, we were handed plastic quart containers because the restaurant had somehow run out of standard takeout trays. It just felt very disorganized overall. I truly wanted this visit to live up to the experiences I've had at your other restaurants. Red Rooster Overtown's decor was amazing and so was the music playlist but unfortunately some of the food and the service missed the mark for me. Some of my Sorors and I had dinner here while in the area for a conference. We called when we were about 10 minutes away to make a reservation, just in case one was needed, and the staff was super friendly over the phone. We ended up getting stuck in really bad traffic for almost an hour, but once we arrived at the restaurant, we were still seated quickly without issue. The energy in the building matched the aesthetic. Our waiter deserves 10s across the board for both his patience with first-time, indecisive women (lol) and his overall warm and welcoming presence. We decided to start with cocktails and, after a few questions and many changed minds (lol), we settled on the Tipsy Lemonade (only served in a pitcher), one mango and one strawberry, to share among a few of us at the table. These were soooo good and are definitely a girls' night staple at this point. They do offer a prix fixe menu; the only stipulation is that it must be selected by all parties at the table. There were a few yummy items on the prix fixe menu, but since it was our first time dining there, we really wanted to try a wider variety of options and decided to pass. For appetizers, we shared the deviled eggs, cornbread, oysters two ways, and fritters. For my entrée, I had the oxtail mac and cheese and a side of Brussels sprouts. It was really hard deciding between entrées with so many delicious options on the menu, and I would certainly return to try a few others. The mac and cheese was delicious; however, I was highly disappointed in the small serving of oxtail provided with the dish. Realistically, it was about two small pieces of oxtail with a generous portion of mac and cheese. The quality of the mac and cheese itself was very good. The Brussels sprouts were absolutely amazing! As a fan of Chef Marcus Samuelsson, I make sure to support his restaurants whenever they're in a town I'm visiting. My birthday trip to Miami before heading to my cruise the next day was the perfect opportunity to make dinner reservations at Red Rooster Overtown. I received a friendly reminder call the day before to confirm my reservation--which I greatly appreciated and which set the tone for exemplary customer service. We easily found street parking and arrived a few minutes ahead of our Friday reservation time and were immediately seated (the second sign of exemplary customer service). After a long morning touring Overtown, we had an unexpectedly heavy lunch. So I already knew I was going to pack up any leftovers and enjoy them for breakfast before heading to the port for the cruise. I ordered the Lexington deviled eggs and smokestack ribs. My cousin ordered the oxtail mac. All the food was very tasty and met our standards. I've been blessed to have multiple experiences with birthday dinners--from Applebee's and local Mexican restaurants during my undergrad college days to fine dining--and the staff usually strives to make the birthday person feel celebrated. Well, I did not feel very celebrated by Shelbre. I was served the saddest scoop of vanilla ice cream (I suspect Breyers, which I do like) with a single lit candle. He was so dry while serving it that I honestly don't know if he even wished me a happy birthday. That didn't dampen my spirit. There was a "birthday twin" seated at another table, and we greeted and celebrated each other with love and enthusiasm. Overall, the food and vibe matched Marcus Samuelsson's high-standard brand. Quite literally my favorite restaurant in South Florida. It's Carribean Soul Food cuisine, and I've been here about 8 times now - sometimes I order the exact same meal from the time prior, because it's truly *that good. I've taken work colleagues here after a day's worth of business meetings, have taken family members here, and have even been here solo. I haven't had a single item from the menu that I didn't like, and I know good food - I'm from New Orleans. First - you must order the cornbread ("M's Cornbread"). The sweet honey butter that comes with it is amazing! Then there's a lobster mac and cheese dish that comes out in a huge pan/bowl, meant for feeding multiple folks, but if you'd like a smaller serving of just mac and cheese, there's an option for that somewhere on the menu. The mac and cheese has a nice cheese blend within. The Southern Comfort (formerly named the Yardbird, if I remember correctly) is really delicious, and I've had it 3 different times. There's some sort of hot honey glaze that they used to put on the chicken that makes it even greater, but it doesn't come on the *new Southern Comfort meal; just ask for the hot honey on the side, and they'll provide it. Note - it's a sweet type of spice within the honey, rather than a spicy type of spice - if that makes sense. Anther dish I've tried would be the Smoked Oxtails, which were super tender and well-seasoned. The Shrimp and Grits are delicious as well. All that said, the portions are pretty large and filling, so I've never had space for dessert, but don't let that stop you from trying something out from the menu if you can handle extra. I was really excited to try this establishment, hoping for the best. The inside was gorgeous; it screamed luxury southern jazz bar to me. Let's get into the details: Apps: Oysters- I wasn't a huge fan of the Coco Passion mignonette; it had a subtle flavor and missed the brininess of the oyster. The house-made hot sauce definitely made it more flavorful, adding spice and acid. Also, why weren't they chilling on ice? Rating 3/5. Conch Fritters: Fried, fluffy, and tasty. It was also paired with a dipping sauce to add a little bit of twang and spice. Rating: 3.5/5 Entree's: Jerk NY Strip- I would never qualify that as a jerk sauce; there was no spice, it was more like a sweet chutney sauce that smothered the steak. The steak looked and tasted like it was boiled, with no sear. The rice was crunchy and a little undercooked. It reminded me of the scrapings from the bottom of a large pot of rice. The plantain needed to be cooked a bit longer; they were really firm. Rating: 1/5 Cornbread crusted snapper- The fish was fried well, but it was underseasoned. You could tell they didn't season the fish fry batter. A bit of salt sprinkled after the cook would go a long way. The beans were tender and also a bit underseasoned, but the dish was very light. Rating 3/5 Oxtail Mac and Cheese- That was more of a safer and tastier option, but I'm not sure why a lot of the sauces are so sweet. We've been to Marcus Samuelsson's restaurant in the Bahamas, Marcus at Baha Mar Fish + Chop House and also got a chance to see him do a food demonstration at SOBEWFF 2024. He seems like a genuine guy and a down to earth chef. I actually watched him on Top Chef. We were blown away with everything we had at his Bahamas location. So when we realized he had a restaurant here in Miami, we decided to check it out during our staycation in Brickell. Red Rooster Overtown was only about 10 min from our hotel so that was perfect. This restaurant was also a part of the InKind app which we use so it was ideal, they actually offered a separate $50 off $150 discount directly from restaurant's website. Our reservation was for 7:30pm on a Saturday night. It wasn't crazy busy when we arrived. Our server was Katie and she immediately made a good impression on us. Katie was incredibly personable, funny and full of energy! I loved her positive vibe. We double checked on the InKind thing and she confirmed but also let us know that she uses it too so she totally gets it. I felt like our whole dinner experience was just chatting it up. Haha. Loved how engaging she was. It was very easy to talk to her and she was a wonderful server that just went above and beyond. The peppers were yummy. I don't recall any sweet plantains? Sauce was good but just a big portion. We had to take most of the dish home. We ordered the Ice Cream Sandwich for dessert thinking it would be small. Wrong. It was so big that no way we were eating all that so when it arrived, we offered the tables next to us a portion. Gave half to table next to us and another quarter portion to table next to them. Our neighbors were so grateful that we shared our dessert. The quarter we got was just enough and all we needed. Red Rooster was good but didn't blow our mind like the other Bahamas spot we went to. Food was 4- stars and honestly, our server Katie was 110% awesome and she made the experience that much better for the full 5-star experience! We would come back again to try other menu items. Came here on a Friday night for the R&B party. They also played dancehall, neo soul, and some Afrobeats songs. It was a nice turnout. People were friendly and actually dancing. It wasn't pretentious at all. Apparently they do a dancehall, soca, and afrobeats party on Saturdays. Would love to come back for that. Had to take away a star because I had a bad experience getting drinks at the bar. It wasn't that busy but it took much longer than it should've for the bartender to attend to me. Came in for thanksgiving 2025, since the menu had some fun flavors on it like jerk turkey or pomegranate salmon. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Street parking in maybe not the "best" neighborhood... but I think that's part of the charm (and pays homage to their sister restaurant in Harlem). I took a ride share. Unfortunately it was raining that day so on a packed thanksgiving dinner, it did cause a bit of delay trying to reseat everyone comfortably inside. Luckily they have a big interior and well designed bar area. The hostesses were doing their best to get everyone settled. Weather and rush also caused a bit of delay getting the dishes out, but luckily we never felt rushed with the sitting and our waitress was very kind and doing her best to make things right when timing issues did occur. Food was very tasty. The cornbread starter was better than I expected it to be. I really enjoyed the pumpkin soup. The jerk turkey was OK, I was just maybe expecting more jerk seasoning. Sides were all well crafted. Dessert was OK, the s'mores felt a bit cakey but I appreciated the size (not huge, not minuscule). The whole meal was hearty, I did not walk away hungry. As part of our #BlackHistoryMonth tour of Miami's food scene, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention one of my long-standing favorites: Red Rooster in Overtown. I've been here many times -- date nights, hosting out-of-town guests, friends craving soul food. It's one of those places I can count on when someone says, "I want good Black food in Miami." So for a dad-and-daughter date night, this felt like the right stop. The One Frustration Small knock, but important: their brunch ends at 4PM and they close until 5PM to reset for dinner -- which isn't obvious online. I made a 5PM reservation, and we still had to wait while they finished the transition. If I were alone, I would've happily sat at the bar for happy hour. But since I had my daughter with me, we chilled in the lobby and talked. Not a huge issue -- just something to note. Once seated, though? Service was excellent as always. We were there early -- just two other parties (one large celebration that looked like an engagement or wedding dinner, and a very casual tourist couple who clearly didn't get the memo on the ambiance). Ambiance: Black Excellence on Display Red Rooster feels like stepping into a curated time capsule -- somewhere between the 50s, 60s, and 70s -- when Black excellence wasn't subtle, it was intentional. The decor is rich without being loud. The lighting is perfect for dinner. It feels elevated but welcoming. Looking out toward the patio felt like peering onto a cozy Southern porch at dinnertime. Warm. Soulful. Intimate. The Food (Because That's Why We're Here) Now let's talk about the elephant in the room... They were out of oxtails. This almost dropped them to a one-star visit for me. I specifically brought my daughter because she loves oxtails. We waited for dinner service. We waited to be seated. And then 10-15 minutes after sitting down, we're told the smoked oxtails wouldn't be available for another hour. That hurt. They also had a $65 Black History Month prix fixe menu featuring soft shell crab, gumbo, oxtail bolognese, and jerk spiced cauliflower steak -- and of course, the oxtail option wasn't available. So we pivoted to the regular dinner menu. And thankfully... the kitchen redeemed itself. M's Cornbread -- served with sweet honey butter and caramelized plantain chutney -- is something I could eat as a standalone meal. Perfect texture. Slight sweetness. That plantain chutney? Dangerous. Oysters on the Half Shell -- with chili tango, cocoa passion, mango mignonette, and fresh horseradish. If you haven't tried these, go just for this dish. The layering of sweet, heat, and brine is impeccable. For entrées: * My daughter ordered the cornbread-crusted snapper with sofrito. The coating had that crispy Southern crunch, and the sofrito brought this smoky, soulful depth that elevated the whole dish. * I had the Overtown Orchard Smoked Pork Chop, glazed with apple cider, served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and crispy onions. Cooked perfectly. Tender, juicy, balanced sweetness. No notes. We were too full for dessert -- which says something -- but we'll be back for that alone. Final Verdict Red Rooster remains one of my favorite soul-forward dining experiences in Miami. The ambiance is unmatched. The food execution is consistently strong. Service was on point. But... if I make a dinner reservation and the signature oxtails aren't available? That's a miss. So on this visit, they get 3 stars instead of the 4-4.5 they normally earn from me. We'd been looking forward to this night for weeks, and ecstatic to share it went far beyond our expectations. From the beginning, the staff made us feel truly special. When I called to make our reservation, they were prompt, warm and accommodating. Upon arrival we were welcomed into the main dining room with genuine hospitality. As we gazed around the room while thinking of which cocktail to pick, the art, historical photos, and tropical-eclectic decor instantly set the tone. Each corner of the room telling a story of culture, rhythm, and deep-rooted soul. We finally decided to go with our personal favorite drink, the Old Uncle Duke, their soulful spin on an Old Fashioned. It was super smooth, very well balanced, and just sweet enough, it easily earned a spot in my personal top five. I must admit, each round ordered was just as perfect as the last, consistency is also a top compliment to the bartender. The service team deserves their own round of applause. Our server didn't just take our orders; he guided us through the menu with great detail, painting vivid pictures of each dish. We started with the Smoke Stack Ribs, Oxtail Fried Rice, and M's Cornbread and wow, each one hit a different high note. That Oxtail Fried Rice alone could headline the menu. Chef Tristen Epps-Long (Top Chef Season 22 winner) clearly put his heart into it. The toasted peanuts and key lime soy dressing made it tender yet with a crispy texture, a genius mix of southern comfort and creativity. The ribs lived up to their name; smoky with a sweet heat that lingered just right for this island couple's lips. But oh my, that cornbread? Dangerously delicious. They managed a harmonious cross between sponge cake and pound cake that you dress with their seasonal jam and rum butter. If they sold this stuff to go, we'd be weekly customers here. For our main dish, we went all in on their King's Jambalaya, a real showstopper. We wanted to enjoy every element of their top well reviewed selections; their infamous fried chicken, braised oxtail, and red shrimp layered over jambalaya rice, collard greens and caramelized plantains. It was the kind of dish that tells a story of heritage, craft, and pure culinary joy. Though we couldn't fit any room for dessert, as much as we wanted to, the staff surprised us with a sweet anniversary scoop of their house-made ice cream, a special touch that made the evening even more magical for us. In conclusion, Red Rooster isn't just a restaurant, it's a cultural experience. The management runs a tight, professional ship while keeping things warm and oh so personal. I have been waiting to write this review because I knew it would be hard. I wanted to love this place. I saw the chef/owner on Top Chef and loved him! I was sure this place would be amazing. We went for Thanksgiving, which may have been the mistake. We made a reservation for 630 with no problem: they confirmed our reservation the day before. Unfortunately that's where the positives end. There was some traffic or lane blockage on 95 that night so we were running late. We called around 615 to notify we were running late, the hostess said no problem cuz they were running late as well and that we would have to wait 30 mins anyway. I was confused by the comment because that's not how a reservation works but we said fine and headed down. We arrived 15 minutes late but to my surprise they sat us right away! We did not wait but 5 minutes. Parking was easy. However as we were walking in, we heard a customer say that they were leaving because the restaurant was a "shit show". That made me nervous but we continued in anyway and as I said , we were seated quickly. The atmosphere was nice, cool location, nice interior and a laidback vibe. I thought the music was a little loud but that was the least of the issues. We were seated right away by a very friendly waitress who took our drink orders and gave us menus. Once we got our drinks , we ordered. They were out of the beef , so we had to get turkey, but hey it's thanksgiving so o was fine with that. We waiting nearly an hour for the appetizers to come out. At one point the waitresses and then the manager came out to apologize. At about 8pm our appetizers came, 2 salads and three soups. I don't know why this took so long. Salad is served cold and the soup wasn't even warm. I will say the soup was very good, but was cold. We were confused by this, was it meant to be a cold gazpacho type soup or just served cold by mistake. As we were finishing our last bites of appetizers, the main dishes came out. My poor mom didn't even get to finish her soup before the turkey was served. Half of my family got the turkey entree , while the others got the salmon. Both were bland. I expected much more for a jerk turkey. It was boring . Those who had the salmon said it was just ok. As for the sides, they were fine, nothing special though. Finally, dessert, I got the brownie smores dessert. It was burnt. I couldn't take more than a bite. Others got the cheesecake and said it was too much, too sweet, just too much. The kicker at the end of all this was that the meal was nearly $700. I mean, that's nuts. This place has such great reviews so I don't know if it's just cuz it was a holiday and they were overbooked or that this is a true reflection of how they operate. Anyway, I was disappointed. I will leave one positive note: our waitress and all staff were incredibly nice! If they were flustered by the night and how it was going, they did not let that be known. Visiting from out of town and had to find something close to the bright line. The absolute best oxtails I have ever had at a restaurant. So very tender, exploding with flavor. I could've asked for a better dish than this one. We were greeted upon entering very nicely. Staff was very attentive and helpful. Four of us took the Brightline down from Fort Lauderdale to eat dinner at Red Rooster. The restaurant is two blocks from the train station. The weather was beautiful and it was nice to see all the new shops and apartment towers popping up in Overtown. The neighborhood was alive with young people getting off work on a Friday. The restaurant has a hip ambiance. The bar area is really nice. Because of the curvature of the bar, four can sit together and semi face each other and have nice conversations. Truly a nice bar area. Later, we were seated in the dining room for dinner. Our server was Burge. He was pleasant, attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. Unfortunately because of a big party the day before, the restaurant was out of stock of so much. No draft beer. No menu Cabernets. No crab fritters. But we found plenty good things on the menu to eat. We started with deviled eggs and cornbread. Both were really good. I had the Charred Cauliflower Stew. It came in a tomato curry sauce/soup. The flavors were so fresh and clean. It was truly amazing. I also had the Mac-n-cheese. It was one of the best I've had! My friends kept stealing bites of it. My friends ordered the fish fry, smoked jerk short-ribs and the honey salmon. Everybody was extremely happy with their dish. The trip down was definitely worth it. A few more thoughts: I would have loved to try the Jambalaya but it is a large portion for 3-4 people only. The wine list is nice (and pricey) but the pour is small- less than six ounces and they measure! The dining room tables are somewhat small for a party of four. Round tables would work better. The R & B music playing was really nice. Overall, we loved the place. I think I'll make the trip again for my birthday in August and I'll reserve the mini private dining area that seats 12 people! read more

When brunch became popular decades ago it use to be affordable. So I was hesitating about going to a $65 brunch that didn't include any drinks. When we arrived the restaurant was well organized, had an awesome decor and the best part was there was an option to add unlimited mimosas for $25. Our server was excellent, we were a party of 6 and he explained how the buffet was set up and our drink options. The food was really good, well seasoned. I love the setup. The hot food was outside and the salad, bread and cold dishes were inside. I started at the omelet station, then proceeded to add grits, shrimp, potatoes and a biscuit. Everything was delicious, well prepared, reminds you of that good old southern hospitality. I was trying to eat in moderation but my second plate consist of the deviled eggs, fried catfish, mac & cheese, fried chicken and salad. The mimosas were pretty good, you had a choice of different juices you didn't have to stick to the classic orange juice. Then there was a DJ who was really setting the mood. This is the best restaurant in Miami. The oxtails and grits are a must. Also the chicken and waffles are on point. They provide bone in chicken which is a pleasant surprise. Stopped in for happy hour and sat at the bar. It's such a cute spot with a fun vibe. I got the wings and the fried chicken bites, and both were really good, but the wings were amazing (they're only on the happy hour menu). We came for the Sunday brunch and was looking forward to sampling all of the items on their impressive brunch menu. Unfortunately. the experience was quite mediocre. On the plus side, I love the decor and vibe of the restaurant. I can see myself coming back to sit at the bar for some drinks for sure. Anyway, on to the food.. We sampled a little of everything and personally thought the Cajun shrimp over their cheese grits was the best of all the available items. It could've had a bit more spice but overall it was easily my favorite dish. In second place I'd vote for the fried chicken, which had a nice crust and good flavor. We also tried the ribs, flank steak, chicken on a skewer, fried catfish, collard greens, Mac n cheese, shrimp cocktail, ceviche, and some sweets. Overall I would say the one constant was a lack of flavor. The ribs and steak were incredibly disappointing and the ceviche was just awful. After paying $200 for 3 people, I can confidently say I won't be doing the brunch again. lol read more

My wife and I were invited by friends to join them here for brunch, and unfortunately the experience did not live up to expectations. To begin, the hostess was not particularly welcoming, which set the tone for the visit. Our server did explain how the brunch itself worked but did not clarify the rules for the bottomless mimosas. We later found out that each of the four of us had to order our own pitcher at an additional $25 per person. The mimosas were watered down, and we waited quite a while for them to arrive. As for the food, there were some highlights -- the mac and cheese was excellent, the fried yuca potatoes were good, and my wife really enjoyed the grits. However, the fish was mediocre, the fried chicken was disappointing, and many of the platters were nearly empty. At one point, we even had to wait for more fish to be brought out. For a price of $65 per person, the watered-down mimosas should really be included. In the end, our bill for two people with tip came to $226.80, which felt excessive given the overall quality and experience. read more

They made eye contact with me, then proceeded to gossip for about 5 minutes before "someone in charge" reminded them to attend the waiting guest. Very rude and unprofessional from the staff. Have no idea how the food taste and never will since we clearly left after the disrespect when we had a set reservation with a group of 5 that all came from different area codes to meet up. I want to start by saying our server was absolutely wonderful -- attentive, kind, and did everything in their power to help us. That deserves recognition. We visited on Mother's Day and understood the limited menu -- that was completely expected and not an issue. However, my experience with the kitchen and management left much to be desired. I ordered the chicken and waffles and specifically requested white meat. When my plate arrived, I had received dark meat instead. Our server graciously approached the chef to resolve the situation, but the chef refused to offer any alternative. Management was then called over and explained they had limited chicken available. I completely understood that and offered to pay for an entirely separate meal just to receive a breast piece of chicken. I was told that even purchasing an additional full meal would not guarantee me a breast piece -- despite the fact that I personally witnessed at least 10 chicken and waffle dishes served with breast chicken while I was seated, including the patron next to me when I arrived and the new guest seated beside me as I was leaving. I was a willing, paying customer who asked for nothing unreasonable. The server did their job beautifully. Unfortunately, the kitchen and management fell short of basic customer service standards.
