Mainstay in the neighborhood that is still open and still serving delicious food in a time when we need it most. We've ordered poboys from here so many times I can't count, and so I can't believe I haven't written a review before. My favorite time to order from them is early lunch on a Saturday when we're outside doing yard work. They're a quick drive away, the food is always prepared fresh, and lunch never breaks the bank. Service is on par with what you'd expect from a long-standing neighbor joint; super nice people. They have a large menu of hot and cold poboys, specialties, and hot plate daily specials. Poboys are large enough to share if you're into sharing, and priced for every day eating. Sides and drinks are added separately, which I actually super appreciate. Parking lot isn't the biggest if you go during a rush time, and be prepared to pay in cash (not a bother to me at all). The inside (when we can go in again), can get packed around lunch, but other than that time it's pretty open. They have grocery items for sale, and tables you can sit to eat - though it's all counter service. Order and pay, then take your food where you want; to a table or outside. Not sure why people have a hard time with this one, but it's an older poboy shop model that this place is keeping alive - and I love it. read more

I've heard a bit about this place and it's been on my radar for a while. Being a huge lunch salad guy, I go in to try their House Salad. As far as bang for your buck, this place gets a star or two for that alone, about $6 after tax for a salad with bacon, egg, chicken, lettuce and the dressing of your choice; alongside four or so packs of crackers. I was shocked to see they give you three sauce cups full of your requested dressing, I didn't need all three whatsoever, but quite a generous gesture. Speaking of generous gestures, the staff here was incredibly nice to me. I told them it was my first time and they walked me through all the specials and such. High marks for the people along the good line. Unfortunately this place does lose some significant points for how surprisingly rude the cashier lady was after the rest of the staff was excellent. Additionally, I think this place could use with a "cash or check only" sign where you order and not just in front of the register. When I went to give the cashier my card she told me "cash only" with a tone that would make one think I just insulted her family. As for the taste of everything, the salad was wildly mediocre, yet also cheap and satisfied my hunger. While I was happy that the large amount of chicken was present in my salad, the meat could have used some seasoning. On the bright side, the bacon was crispy. Will I return? Sure! I'd for sure give it another shot; with cash in hand no doubt. But as it stands this trip receives a 6/10 in my book, equating to a 3 star rating. read more

I really want to like this old time neighborhood place. The people that work here are so nice and friendly. Unfortunately, I probably will not return for a few reasons. Honestly, it also won't be at the top of my recommendation list if anyone asks. My mother can't have seeds due to health reasons, and when we asked if they had seeded French bread, they first said no. They did say they could scrape the sesame seeds off, which was a nice gesture. They then said they actually did have some unseeded that day. It was a random piece just lying around, LOL. That just seemed a little weird, so my mother opted for the seeds to be scraped off. The lady (again, very nice and friendly) started scraping the seeds off the piece of French bread over the garbage can in front of us. This, while no gloves of any sort. They serve your sandwich on an order tray lined with paper. No plate or anything. Kind of odd, but I guess that's okay. My roast beef did not seem like it was homemade, nor did the gravy. I didn't confirm that with the staff, but it tasted like deli sliced roast beef with gravy added. It was also a little too salty. I added Swiss cheese, which was the processed Kraft singles kind. The ketchup bottles on the table were not very clean. They do not take credit cards, and you pay after you eat; although that wasn't explained. You have to remember what you ordered, and tell them at the register, because they don't write an order ticket. The other thing about the place is the cleanliness. The amount of dirt/dust on the blinds in the front window is pretty gross to look at while eating. read more

You get in line and then order your meal but don't forget to grab a drink from the coolers, as they only have bottle drinks and beer, then pay at the cash register. At lunch this place gets pretty crowded so you might have a wait to find some seating. The food is generally good with some standouts. This little Harahan gem has been serving up deliciousness for as long as I can remember. Po-boys seem to be everybody's favorite. I make sure I go on Tuesday for the daily special, hamburger steak in a rich, brown gravy served over mashed potatoes with a side, or that little cup of yum they call banana pudding! This is a staple of Harahan. The roast beef poboys are awesome, slow-cooked and sloppy. The poboy and sandwiches are made to order and brought to your table. Take out orders and catering are also available, plus it doubles as a small grocery with a deli counter...the kind of place you would run to in case you discovered an ingredient was missing from your cupboard while you're cooking. The Red Wagon also offers a daily lunch special. I tried the catfish and it was wonderful - grilled not fried with parsley potatoes, french bread and banana pudding. The banana pudding put this lunch over the top! It's very casual and typically filled with regulars that the staff knows by name. They don't take credit cards, but do checks. My husband and I were craving fried seafood and heard Red Wagon had great fried shrimp pho-boys. We decided to order two fried seafood platters to-go. Go big and go home! Over a decade ago I worked out in the Harahan area and still remember some of the places I used to get lunch. Now I find myself again working in that area and trying to remember (and find) those places I used to visit. One of those is Red Wagon Grocery. While there are two very small aisles of goods (enough to maybe call it a "grocery" I guess) the real star and reason to visit is the lunch counter. Line up and give your order to the nice person by the counter, either a poboy or the hot plate of the day, then go down to the register and pay. They will bring your food out to you if you are dining in. The poboys are pretty standard and the roast beef is really good. But the real star for me is the hot lunch, especially Monday's meatloaf special. Monday's lunch is two nice sized slices of meatloaf and two big scoops of baked macaroni, all smothered in grave (you can get it without gravy on the mac, but why would you?). Pair it with a piece of buttered french bread and your choice of salad, desert, or side and you've got a hearty meal for a good price. The only thing I don't care for is the register is cash only. They have an ATM on location in case you forget but then you're stuck with a couple dollars in fees making that lunch cost 50% more. read more

Either Old Harahan Staple, or Guilty Little Pleasure, an a few in between. A seemingly little standard Market/Buffet style sit down restaurant, but there are Some surprises here along the way. Monday lunch specials and the Meatloaf with gravy, Mac an cheese and a side salad.. The Meatloaf, is HEAVENLY, really, American comfort food that will please your soul. The Mac and Cheese, ask them to cover that in gravy, is beautiful.. The side salad, looks more like the toppings of a burger than a sald, but tis can be forgiven Given the gastrogasm you are still basking in from the Meatloaf. Don't even bother with the bread on the side, which was, well dry..yeah, I'll simply call it dry. This place is a simple, yet delightful Harrahan institution and the specials are the reason why. Wonderful small town restaurant. There weekly specials are economical and hearty. The Wednesday special-Panned Chicken with parsley potatoes and banana pudding is my personal favorite! The poboy's are also very good and the portions are very generous. The staff is very friendly and the owner Mike is behind the counter working side by side filling orders. When one becomes a regular they know your name, ask how the family is doing, and your regular order. I grew up just a few blocks down from Red Wagon and have been eating their poboys since the early 80s. Their Roast Beef is my favorite. I get the large roast beef with mayo and gravy and it's exquisite. The staff are friendly and personable and recognize their repeat customers. The food is high quality. And the price is low. You could feed an army on $10 there. And it would be a happy army too. Place is always packed at lunch but the lines move quickly. Everyone in NOLA has his own favorite poboy shop, it's true. But I've converted tons of friends to Red Wagon who were convinced no place could beat theirs. It's worth driving out of your way to eat there. read more

Comfort food is a good way to describe it. I kind of look forward to forgetting to pack a lunch because it means I'll call in an order to Red Wagon. I call in, drive over and my meal is ready to go! To be perfectly honest I have only ever ordered one item from here. Shrimp fettuccini. This has been my grandmother & I's Friday spot every time I'm in town for years. She raves about any poboy she gets, but I always get the fettuccini. I don't even know why I like it so much, but it trumps every other shrimp pasta I've ever eaten. If I could get the recipe I would make it for myself between visits. Always busy, but always efficient and friendly. Order your food for there or to go and expect it ready in no time at all. My husband and I eat at the Red Wagon at least once a week. We have tried most of the menu items. Lately we are experiencing high salt content in the roast beef and bbq beef poor boys. I had the roast beef plate lunch and could not eat it. TOO SALTY. All the gravies used on the plate lunches are too salty. Now - the seafood poor boys are so good.
