I went in 25 oct 2024 for a check engine light. Scan tool said it was too lean on banks 1 and 2. Autozone said it was a PCV valve. He fixed it. A week later, today, 01 Nov 2024, i went to get it smogged for registration. I passed. All thanks to these guys. As the saying goes, "there are three things you need in life. The work here is Good! Let me be clear with that upfront. The work I paid for was all done good, however, nothing amazing or extraordinary in the experience having work done here. This is a shop I would come to in an emergency !!!! IF !!!! I knew exactly what the problem/s with my car were. Like many other auto shops, they will play the mechanic "game" and recommend things that could be replaced (not necessarily NEEDED done at the moment) and if you don't know your car or cars in general you'll end up coming out of pocket for it. So, I came in needing a full service/tune up, oil changed and my brakes replaced. Sounds easy right? Wrong! I got a call later that day or next day( can't remember) from Red himself telling me Alllllll the problems he found with my car. Well, the $320job I came in for ended up being a few dollars under $1200!!!! Yes, twelve HUNDRED DOLLARS from $320 what I came in for even tho I told him do HALF the work he suggested. Needles to say, I've paid for my last lesson in trusting a mechanic here at Reds auto. Thank you and NO thank you! Told me my rotors were bad(I'm not doubting they weren't), but how does the cost of replacing rotors end up being around $800? Yeah, NO. He replaced some wiring but I know it's not thru the entire car just a few upfront....But THAT and rotors $800? WTH "Excuses only satisfy those who make them" can't remember where that quote is from but I'm sure Red could talk all day long about the excuses for the crazy price tag I ended up with. I just wouldn't return unless I knew exactly what I needed done and I didn't have the tools to do it myself. It takes me longer than a satisfactory review because I'm too damm nice upfront. My problem that I ended up paying for here at Reds auto. I seen a lot of reviews saying he is honest and all the good faith stuff, but from my experience he is either NO master mechanic or he simply is just taking advantage (but maybe not as bad as other places? IDK). The best thing I got from coming here is the courage to try and do the work I can myself l... save my money and not deal with POSSIBLY dishonest businesses. Red has been our longtime mechanic since '96, he has served my family and friends well with cant-beat prices on repairs on japanese, domestic, and european. I currently drive a jetta with high mileage and after knowing that car dealers lie and charge you a ridiculous amount for parts and labor, I would only go to Red for value and good service. My mom bought a brand new '97 Nissan Quest from Vallejo Nissan back when Red was a service technician there, and now that he's on his own, he still maintains my moms van which now has 280,000 miles on it. We take all our cars there, especially my moms prized Mini Cooper S, she gets all the service done here since BMW and Mini charge an arm and a leg to get something done at the dealership. Red also makes referrals and goes out of his way to deliver exceptional service, if your car requires it, he will do smog, if not he will make referrals to you on where you should get it done at a reasonable price. If youre looking for an inexpensive place for car repair, consider checking out Red's first, he does great work, great value and will make it right for you the first time. The absolute worst experience ever. Made it to the shop around 10am for him to do a diagnosis on my Cylinder 1 misfire and he already assumed what the issue with my car was before he touched it, even though i informed it wasn't showing symptoms to match his pre-diagnosis. I had to ask him to perform routine checks (which he disregarded at first, but eventually performed as if it was his idea) that he should have already known to do to rule out or determine the cause of my problem. In the middle of completing his diagnosis, he came to inform me that his computer server went down and wouldn't be back up and he didn't know when. He said I could go home and he would call me (In what car? The stalling unsafe one?). I had to request that he call his provider to see when his server would be back up when that should have been a given, since he's the one running the business. After he called, he was informed it wouldn't be back up until 2-3 hours later. Being that my car was taken apart already and I didn't want to drive it home and then back again, causing irreparable engine damage, I was at a standstill. He then offered to pay for my Uber home (which ended up being a Lyft), which was nice. After standing out on the curb and having 2 rides cancel, I finally got my ride home. About an hour or so later he called me and stated that the issue with my car was exactly as he thought. A busted head gasket. Go figure. Again, my car hadn't been exhibiting any of the side effects of this diagnosis other than rough idling, but ok. He stated the price to be $2500 to repair, but then offered to waive the diagnostic fee of $120, since "it was nothing for [him]" and fix only the spark plugs and coils (2) for $601 saying that there was at least a 70% chance that it would buy me time, could possibly fix the problem, and I might as well get them changed anyway since I'll have to later on when I repair the head gasket. Always being one to look for a second and ninth opinion, I called the Toyota Dealership. Turns out they offered spark plugs at $16.99/ea as opposed to the $24.99 "dealership" price he quoted me, and they advised that throwing away $600 for a bandaid fix is a waste. If the head gaskets are damaged severely it will be sure to damage the coils and plugs, making the purchase null and void and ensuring I'll need to buy them both again later. So I called this shop back and told Red that I didn't want to go forward with partial repairs, would bring the car back when I could do everything, and that I'd be sending a tow truck to pick up my car. He said he wouldn't have the car put back together for an hour and a half so I had to call and cancel it. Once he called saying it was ready, I ordered a tow again and let him know when they'd arrive. He said no problem and mentioned nothing else. It was not until the tow driver got there and it was right before closing time, that Red got on the phone and said that he would not release my car because I had to pay the diagnostic fee of $130 (now trying to pin me with the price of the Lyft he volunteered to pay!). When I brought to his attention that he was reneging on his word and earlier said he would waive the fee, he attempted to lecture me about the way the world works and then said he wasn't going to argue about it, he was leaving the shop, and I wasn't getting my car even if I got a Lyft down there. The foolery! We spoke on the phone 3 times and if he had changed his mind he could've told me, but he didn't. Hopefully, he won't cause further damage to my car overnight. Needless to say, I won't be coming back! read more

I recently moved to Vallejo, and about a month after I got here my car started making the most HORRIBLE noise. I came to Red to fix my Nissan Maxima's alternator. After getting quotes from the Nissan dealership and other auto repair shops in the area, Red provided the best quote and service time estimate. While getting my alternator fixed, he also had one of his employees give me a ride to a local Starbucks so that I could use my waiting time productively. A few months later, I thought my alternator had broken down again but it turned out to be my engine mount. Red was honest about the service done in removing my engine in order to reach the mount and weld it, and we were able to negotiate a more than fair price for the necessary work for my car to run again. Red is a Professional, he has kept my 18 year old truck healthy all these years. The last time I was there he change my timing belt, tensioner, water pump, radiator hose, cylinder head gasket, spark plug, axcillary belts. The engine was blown...192,000 miles on the 11 year old car. He told me to just junk it. We couldn't afford a new car so I researched engines online and found one for cheap...he said let me call my dealer and see what they have. Red's auto repair is by far the best place I could have chosen to take my car. You will not find a more honest individual than the owner, Red, to deal with. He tells you exactly what you need, and lets you know if he can perform the service requested. He did a complete engine replacement for my car, in a timely manner, and at a VERY fair price. He wound up saving me more money by catching a problem with my clutch before re-installing the engine. I will be taking all 4 of my cars to Red's, and only Red's from now on. Not only are they very good at fixing your car, you won't find better customer service on a human level. I found Red's auto repair shop through Yelp. I needed to repair my car to pass smog check. After replacing the Catalitic Converter I passed the smog test first time. Mr Red's charged me a fair price and made sure not to repair what was working right ex: oxygen sensor. To my pleasant surprise not only did he give me a ride back home, he also picked me from my home to get the car from the shop. He is very polite, kind and sincere. Every time I take my car into his shop (I drive a 1987 Nissan Maxima) he prioritizes what work needs to be done first to help keep the cost of repairs down! He also works in fast, efficient manner- my car is always ready within a day or two! And last week after my car failed smog, I took it to him to fix my ignition start (took about 45 minutes) and when I asked him for the bill, he said there was no charge! What a nice guy!!! I took my 2000 Dodge Durango in because it was making a loud ticking noise from the passenger side engine. I had a sense it was the manifold and wanted to get an estimate. I went to Red's because of the Yelp reviews. The owner confirms it is broken bolts in the manifold. Then he says that unfortunately he cannot access the manifold without pulling down the engine. He says the engine compartment is just to small to access the manifold any other way. He says the initial estimate for the work is $1,200, but can easily increase to $2,000 + if I want to replace other seals and gaskets since the engine is down. While he is explaining I am noticing that the passenger side manifold appears to be easily accessible through the wheel well, once the plastic mud guard is removed. $1,200 is too expensive for me, so I leave with the car. I go home and watch three Youtube videos on removing/replacing the manifold on Dodge Dakotas (same engine and body as Durango). All three explain that this is a common problem at about 100,000 miles. All three show the work being done through the right wheel well for a lot less than $1,200. Bottom line, I did the work myself, following the Youtube instruction and it took me about three hours. I reused the manifold and the whole job cost me $25. Car is quiet and runs great. SO......either Red's didn't know how easy this job is or the owner was trying to sell me a bag of *&^%$. Either way something smells fishy. I won't be back. read more
