Years ago I had a part fail on a trail in Lyons, Dave was able to do a quick fix and get me back on the trail. Considering I lived a few hours away, it was very much appreciate. Years later (this year) I had Dave at Redstone build a custom wheel set using Industry None Hydra hubs with Whisky carbon rims and finish off my new old scool build for me. (2010 Niner mcr with all new modern parts) Dave is a strait shooter that offers a very fair price for exceptional work. He is not a fast talking sales guy that try's to convince you to buy what you dont need, quite the opposite. He listened to my build plans and made great recommendations. Looking over the new build, it is very apparent that Dave has been working on bikes for years, his work was clean and precise, I was also happy with the bill at the end of the build. Mountain biking. For me, this lost love that I haven't had much time to explore lately. I sorely miss it. Work, house, blah blah blah... these things are important, but, they somehow have the ability to strip you of the fun things that make you lose skin, howl at the moon, or the mindset that makes it okay to take elicit substances. Now, the Redstone Cyclery could have many names, but, the closest names that fit might be "Dave's Mountain Biking Palace". Or "Dave's Bike Emporium", or "Dave's Super Duper Anything To Do With Mountain Biking Shop and Oh, by the way, do you know any good trails?" I'm joking, but, Dave's personality, his winning newsletters, his ability to deliver whatever mtn bike you crave has to be elicited here on Yelp. I wanted to buy/purchase a new mountain bike recently, but, the plans were quashed, still in their infancy by a wife who had foresight into monetary checkbook balances that I was probably ignoring out of a form of self delusion that comes with a serious case of the "I Wants". That case of "I Wants" is over, but, I'm not going to give up being a dreamer. I'll probably be taking my old Klein hardtail over there for a tune up. I really like it when my brakes work like, you know, perfect, and as my wife says, "If you want a brand new spanking mtn bike, perhaps you should dust off your old one first and get it out of the garage." (damn rationality). I first went to Redstone Cyclery a few years back, chatted with Dave a bit and showed up a week later with that same, old, Klein Hardtail. That blue aluminum baby of mine is probably close to 10 or 11 years old now. Everything but the headset and frame have been replaced over the years - which is okay, since, I like to practice the 3 R's (Recycle, Reuse and Reduce). Dave tuned it up for me and I went riding. While this tune up was going on I remember thinking to myself, "This guy is great and he's doing this all on his own in this tiny little postage stamp shop in downtown Lyons. How cool is that?" It was his attitude, his love of mountain biking and the fact that he had these really cool maps that didn't rip or tear for sale in his shop for $12. So, if you are looking for a good to great mountain bike or you want one custom built, go talk to him or visit his website. I was warned that Dave had an attitude by friends (and serious riders) who had already sworn this place off. Figured I'd take a chance on Redstone, but it didnt work out. Had a tuneup and little work done on my rear brake. Very soon after, that rear brake went out on me completely, which is quite a story in itself. Brought it by for Dave to look at, and he denied any responsibility, claimed there was no connection, and wanted to charge me $45 to bleed my brakes. I asked him why he didn't bleed them the first time, he claimed that he only bleeds brakes when they need it. This is in the same conversation that he's telling me I need it. Make sense to you? Me neither. When I question the situation, this guy gets all excitable and starts kind of puffing up his chest. Over a brake bleed. Seriously dude, you need to relax. I can accept ignorance, forgive shoddy workmanship, and understand that no one is perfect. But when you have a really bad attitude combined with absolute zero willingness to take responsibility for your mistakes AND you charge twice as much as your superior competition, that's a problem. Go here if you want to be way overcharged, wait a week for a simple repair and get treated like an idiot. Looking for a fair price on quality, fast service with a smile? There are about 5 places in Boulder that do that well. read more

I am new to the area and was hoping this would be a good local store for me to frequent. My first time in I just had to buy some tubes but was pleasant and had friendly service. My second time I needed to have some work done and an inspection on a used bike I had purchased (not from them). When I called the guy I spoke to was friendly and said come on down and we will take care of you. Well when I walked into the store it was a totally different experience. The mechanic came out to help me and within a minute or two he was pretty much arguing with me about what work I needed to have done and basically saying one of the issues was my fault and making me feel like I was an idiot about it. He didn't seem to care about my business or really helping me at all. They have lost a potential long term customer. read more

I try to support small and local businesses so went somewhat out of my way to arrive at Redstone. I wanted to buy a pair of toe clips for the pedals on my cruiser. Instead of being handed what I asked for and allowed to pay and be on my way I am interrogated as to why I want the toe clips (none of your business) followed by a completely unasked for "We don't recommend them", as if I asked for the interrogation or the recommendation. After biking for about 60 years, I'm pretty clear on what works for me. This type of arrogant behavior has nothing to do with good customer service and not only was a sale lost but also a potential customer. I went to Performance Cycle in Boulder where I did received great customer service and bought what I was after without incident. read more

I'm a local Lyons guy and I've been to redstone many times for repairs,advice and to just talk bike shit and drink beer..Daves good people...as far as mechanics and local trails go he really knows his shit plus he's always told me straight and helped when he could...plus he drinks beer.... it's all beer and mountain bikes at redstone... that's like the only 2 things that REALLY matter.... read more

I ride! I have a decent bike around 6k and was visiting Colorado from Santa cruz ca. I went to via cycle in Estes park to ask about riding and renting in the area and owner named stefano was really nice but said he was still setting up his shop. Too late in the season to buy a fleet. Shop Looked really nice, coffee bar, etc. he was super cool and told me my riding type (6-8" travel bike) would be best to go Lyons and he thought they rent bikes there and that the shop should know the trails. In I walk to redstone. I have ridden in whistler Canada, Squamish, black rock Oregon, downyville ca, Ashland Oregon, Chico, Tahoe, big bear, and visited many a shop in each place. Never have I found such a rude owner!!! Most riders and owners in our sport are Mello and awesome. Not so here... With in 3 minutes we walked out: we were told no rentals, no trails, and to go back to Estes to ride around a lake? We were basically looked at and spoke too like we were his misbehaving children? Unless your a local pal of Dave I would stay as far away from this shop as I could. In fact I'd recommend to go to via cycle in Estes!! read more

Small town shop with high end selection and service. Matched Internet pricing on a frame-set, even found a custom color that wasn't on sale on the Web for me, no up charge. Helped me with a Frankenstein build using old parts I had to get me up and rolling quickly. Highly recommended if you want highly knowledgeable service, selection, and if they don't have it they can get it for you pretty fast. Dave builds bombproof wheels that seem to never need truing too. I have two sets that just keep on rolling and I am no lightweight. read more

I'm a horrible bike owner. My Electra Cruiser has been with me for over a decade and I kept her out in the elements. The abuse over the years caused the gears and breaks to crap out, leading to me finally getting it serviced for the first time ever. Given the biking culture in Colorado, I assumed my rusty cruiser with my makeshift basket accessory would be shamed and that the bill for all my years of neglect would be hefty. Fortunately, my experience with Redstone Cyclery was great! I "rode" my bike in from my home down the road and brought it back within a week better than ever! I can now ride town to do my errands with all 3 gears and no more squeaking! Dave saw my bike at while I was shopping at a local store a couple weeks after my servicing and came by wanting to make sure I was satisfied and was keeping her indoors like I promised. Carmen Electra now has a cleared out space in my shed. Great communication throughout, shockingly reasonable pricing and no smugness! Very satisfied customer! He was rude about it as well, and I really wanted to like this shop... This is a kind of last resort shop....With that said, I would only come back to this shop if I had no other choice. They charged me $50 bucks to slip 1 pair of brake pads on and used a screwdriver to spread the calipers apart with the new brake pads in....needless to say those pads were toast....I also tried to special order some parts and they never got ordered and they never returned my calls. There are just too many bike shops in nearby Boulder to with this kind of garbage. The guy needs to chill out on the bad attitude if he wants to stay in business... read more

I've known Dave (the owner) for several years now. He has sold bikes for me on consignment, done simple repairs up to doing a complete build-up, and complete wheel builds.
