I clearly said no and asked for a standard cleaning, and instead of respecting my decision, he flat-out refused to treat me unless I agreed to something I didn't want or need. So I walked out. Let me say this louder for the folks in the back: This is MY body, MY mouth, and MY choice. It's 2025--not the 1920s--and the era of blindly doing what the "professional" says without question is over. If I decline a procedure, that's the end of the conversation. I'm not here to be strong-armed or guilt-tripped into unnecessary treatments. I'm 50 years old and have never once been told I needed a deep cleaning by any dentist in my life. I've had excellent care, including several Cerec crowns to replace older amalgam fillings that were breaking down. My treatment plans are always explained satisfactorily and I've never felt like unnecessary work was being tacked on. While major dental work is rarely a fun activity, I've appreciated that pain control is taken seriously here. My previous dentist was the "You can feel that? Oh, just hold on, I'm almost done," type, so prior to coming to Festival Dental, I believed that some level of pain was just part of any dental work. I can honestly say that I've never had any major pain during any procedure here. If I'm feeling discomfort, I'm given another injection, no questions asked. I won't go anywhere else for a filling or crown as long as Dr. Mallory is at this location. I do agree that there were some significant front office staff issues and had some ridiculous billing mistakes a few years back (like sending my husband's bill to my insurance carrier, then billing me when the claim was denied), but I haven't had any problems since then. I believe those problems were largely due to the staff at the time and thankfully, none of those people still work there. The new office manager is a welcome change and he seems genuinely happy to be there. He remembered me from my call to schedule earlier that week and was competent and efficient. I've never had any difficulty scheduling appointments and appreciate the later office hours on Tuesdays. I've not had excessive wait times either in the reception area or while in the exam rooms. I don't bring my daughter to this office because it doesn't feel as kid-friendly as the other dentist in Surprise that my family uses. The office could use some updating and a fresh coat of paint back in the exam rooms.

I made an appointment for a cleaning and to follow up about a crown that was suggested by Dr. Smith…read morewho owned the practice prior to selling it to Dr. Tobon. My last cleaning and exam was 9 months ago and they did bite-wing X-rays. The first thing I was told by the hygienist, was that they needed to give me full mouth X-rays. I said I didn't want to do that if my insurance didn't cover it and I really don't want to be exposed to X-rays unnecessarily. Dr. Tobon was obviously either being flagged down by the hygienist or was listening and came in to discuss it. Upon entering the room, he introduced himself and began by saying, "this is my dental practice. I bought it and I own it now and I understand you have some questions." I explained my concerns and then, in a condescending tone and speaking to me like Mr. Rogers does to a child, said that he likes to take X-rays every 6 months. He started telling me stories of how they could miss a cavity and tried to relate stories of the past where people suffered mightily by not having cavities detected. I explained that I haven't had a cavity in 25 years and I would agree to the X-rays if my insurance covered it but I didn't want to do them more than once per year. I further explained that I was being treated for skin cancer and although it's not related, more X-rays instead of less X-rays was not something I wanted. He then went into a long diatribe about how he cares about his patients and was a veteran and other irrelevant information that was supposed to have me let him do whatever he wanted because he is a good guy. He said things like, "I am the professional here." and "We need to have a trust with each other and allow me to do the things I deem necessary because I care about my patients." Further, he was saying if insurance wouldn't cover it, that he would "work with me", as if he wanted me to be put on a payment plan or something to pay for non-covered procedures. Without knowing my situation, background or circumstances, the implication was that I couldn't afford to pay and not that it might be a principle issue of doing no more than what my insurance plan covers or a genuine concern of X-ray exposure. Honestly, he came across as a used car salesman who was trying to get me to succumb to his pushy tactics by making it some melodramatic "trust" issue while basically talking down to me because he is a dentist. (I guess he doesn't get that some people might have more advanced degrees than him) He said "If you think there might be a trust issue between us, maybe you should consider another dentist." Tired of trying to simply get my cleaning, exam, bite wings and the discussion of my crown done, I got up and left. My impression is that he tries to scare people to into procedures and has no understanding of empathy because he is a business owner more than he is a medical professional (as shown by the way he introduced himself).
