My daughter is a curly girl. She inherited her tendency toward ringlets from her father, whose hair coils into springs between haircuts. I think it was 4th or 5th grade when my kid started actually caring about what her hair looked like. For the next few years she had recurring phases during which she'd be obsessed with the flat iron. There were some dark and unpleasant mornings in our home during those times. Something changed when she hit high school last year. I noticed that she was becoming increasingly interested in her heritage and what she got from her father's side versus what she got from mine. As part of maturing and becoming her own person, she was gaining pride in who she is and what she came from. Perhaps not coincidentally, she stopped fighting her curls and began embracing them. She issued explicit advance instructions that my daughter was to style her hair that morning the way she normally would, and keep it loose all day (no pony tails, no buns). When my kid and I walked into the salon, we looked at each other like, WOW. This place is sweet! Lovely and feminine, with plants and flowers, seasonal decor, and big, comfy damask sofas with throw pillows. They've done a nice job of creating a relaxing ambiance. There's a sense that you're about to be pampered. Our time with Beverly was an education. She spent time asking questions and analyzing my daughter's hair, then explained what she was doing each step of the cut. With the cut complete, Beverly took my daughter to the shampoo bay and from there she meticulously demonstrated washing, drying, and styling techniques to extract maximum curls from her new do. Beverly didn't just style her...she taught her how to style herself. It was truly a process. The best part was when we walked out of the salon and my kid tossed her head around to make her newly-enhanced curls bounce. She was so happy. Five stars! read more

Beverly, the curl miracle worker! I could not be happier with the end result. I have naturally curly hair but did the Japanese hair straightening for several years. Beverly is a Deva method trained stylist and she's very good at it. So good that my friends with curls and kids with curls are going to Beverly. Here's my hair story that led me to go to Reflections and give it a shot: I'm African American, with a 3C curly type hair. I haven't gone to a hair stylist for over a year which was due to my transitioning my hair out of it being permanently straightened. For many years I've gone to Black Hair salons in the peninsula, and my last stylist didn't really know much about how to style my natural hair or even provide me guidance of how to manage it (especially since it was in a weird awkward stage from transitioning out of being straight). After a whole year and a half of not seeing a stylist, and noticing how horrendous my ends were looking I decided to try something new. I read about Deva Cut, went on yelp and found Reflections offered this type of hair cut. I was really skeptical, but figured to give it a shot. The reviews here said that they work with a lot of curly hair (and I prayed they knew how to do black curly hair too). So glad I went here! I didn't end up getting the deva cut due to my hair not being prepped for it the night before (you need to have your curls out and 'styled' and dry before you get it done... I recommend reading more about it, it's an interesting process.) I did however got a regular wet haircut (first time ever getting my hair cut wet) and Deva Cut products were used on my hair for styling which did wonders! Here's the highlights of my visit and why I'll be coming back and also recommend this place (make sure to see Beverly!) to get yourcurly hair taken care of: - Beautiful salon with professional stylists (this isn't a gossipy, chatty kind of salon. It's designed to be a relaxing, organized and welcoming place.) - Beverly knows her stuff and she will take care of your curls. For someone who mentioned that she hasn't worked on many with my type of curls, I was surprise how expertly she did my cut, and styling! If she never told me that, I would have thought she worked on natural black hair all the time! :) - She knows her Deva Cut / Deva products and knows how they will make your curls spring back to life. How was my hair cut: First she washed and conditioned my hair using Deva Products, then detangled my hair, and then cut my ends as my hair was still wet. She took off a lot of my dead ends (which was my main focus for seeing her) and then she styled my hair using Deva products in a beautiful twist and I air dried it. I plan to untwist my hair later tonight and let the curls out more fully, but I think I'll keep them as they are for a while since they look beautiful. Final Verdict: My hair looks and feels healthy and smooth and with more defined curls. No more crappy ends. I'm definitely coming back to see Beverly again.
