Refuge Coffeehouse lives up to its name. Every time I go it's a refuge from the world outside. They don't play constant music you have to shout over. The Wi-Fi is free. The furniture is comfortable. The staff is friendly and they've let me chill there for as long as I needed. Plus not only are the prices reasonable but they even offer Pumpkin Spice Lattes year round! This man told me I was rude because I didn't say hello to him upon entering building, made me wait over 10 mins at counter while he was snacking and playing g on his phone only to tell me he thought I was rude because I didn't say Hi to him when I had entered the building!? Tried calling on Friday, August 1st at 1:52 PM to confirm hours, but no answer on the number listed on their website: (503) 477-7048. Decided to drive over anyway after reading their business profile on Yelp. It's about 15 minutes from my place. I ordered a 16oz Iced Cinnamon Dolce Latte ($4.95), which was listed on their website but not posted on the in-store menu. Add-ons: 70¢ each for cinnamon and oat milk, bringing the total to $6.35, relatively cheaper than most shops. It tasted fine: not too sweet, which I appreciated. I'd just go for extra shots next time, since I prefer a bolder coffee flavor. Also got a Marionberry Cream Cheese Danish ($3.75) from a local bakery: flaky, light, not overly sweet, and reasonably priced. Interior: Spacious and inviting, definitely a spot where you can slow down, work, or hang out as the name suggests. Free Wi-Fi available. There's a community bulletin board near the restroom hallway. Restroom: One-stall, gender-neutral, clean, stocked, and toilet seat covers provided. Code required, just ask. Parking: Free street parking. I would go back here if I was in the area! The inside is really cute and cozy, though the outside area felt pretty sketchy. I was glad I could park right out front to keep an eye on my car. While I was there, an individual who seemed under the influence entered the café and was quickly escorted out. It's a shame the surrounding area isn't better, or I'd probably give this place a higher rating. The breakfast sandwich was good for a basic café sandwich, and I actually liked the bread more than what you usually get. My drink was delicious--it was a special, but if they offered it year-round, it would definitely bring me back. Service was solid, though nothing particularly standout. read more

Popped in here to take a work meeting and it's a great coffee house for working. Plenty of seating but spaced apart so you're not right on top of other people. Seats are super comfortable and plenty of outlets. Free Wi-Fi available. Has the usual cafe offerings as well as pastries and hot breakfast items. Quieter vibe than other coffee shops we have visited. Saw the 4.8 on Yelp and this lives up to it. Comfortable space, they care about their neighbors and the coffee drinks and breakfast sandwiches were excellent and reasonably priced. We had the classic and the western and both were tasty and fresh. Service was friendly and prompt. Our kids and new grandchild live in Lents so we will be back! read more

Very good coffee! Small little shop, didn't seem like anything fancy, but we were impressed with the drinks. Breakfast sandwich was apparently good as well, according to a friend. My friend was raving all weekend about the americano that she had here. She said it was the best she had in Portland. I really enjoyed my pour over as well. The barista was helpful when I was trying to decide what to get. Love when they give good suggestions and recommend their favorites & go-to's. They also were very chill & accommodating with the toddlers and babies that we had with us, running around and playing with toys. great coffee shop in lents! there is usually street parking right out front, otherwise you can turn right at the light and find ample street parking there. friendly, quick service. prices are very reasonable. they have fresh pastries/baked goods - i don't believe any of those are vegan/gluten free, however they do also have treats from gluten free gem which have both vegan and/or gluten free options. tons of other snacks, too! grateful to have this spot in the neighborhood. i'd much rather give my money to my neighbors than a coffee chain! read more

My son and I were waiting for my wife at the nearby dentist and decided to pop into this coffee shop for breakfast sandwich and coffee. I loved the atmosphere I came upon this day. Patron after patron would walk in and the two who were working there (who I assume are the husband wife owners) met numerous people by first name! It really looks like a community coffee shop where the owners care about their customers! It was a cold and windy day, and a woman walked in, who did not appear to have money for coffee and from what I observed, the woman behind the counter, gave her a free cup. This is a good sized location that offered several tables, seating areas and a couch for intimate conversations. The ambiance was nice as well with good relaxing music selection. Very homey comfortable place with great drinks, affordable pour-over and a kids area! For pour-over they had like five or six options, including a decaf, dark medium and at least two light roasts. Less than $3 for a pour-over is amazing! An old vinyl stereo my kid loved going up and dancing to, playing classic rock (Fleetwood Mac, etc). Very friendly attentive staff! I'm very happy they survived the pandemic, Refuge really is the anchor of culture in Lents. It's spacious enough to spread out and has a big enough selection to please everyone -- besides coffee drinks there are a lot of little granola bar-type things, pastries both sweet and savory, some to-go foods and so on, plus beans. They always have interesting local art. They used to do a cool daily music playlist thing where certain days would be jazz, or classic rock, but they don't seem to do it anymore. The baristas make a great cappuccino which I think is a good measure of a coffee shop's worth. They usually have local art on the walls, I believe. Note, I think there is something faintly Christian about the place, or maybe it's just one of the baristas? I'm not totally sure, but you get that vibe sometimes. Sometimes when I walk in they are playing Christian music, which is a little uncomfortable -- I was not raised Christian and find the culture and music very unsettling, even cultish... I try not to linger on those days. Anyway, I'm not sure exactly what's going on there but otherwise everything about Refuge is great. read more

Stumbled upon this cute coffee shop by accident when my dads car broke down and we were stuck in the area waiting for AAA. It was such a cute place to hang out and the owner was so sweet to us! I noticed she and the other employee/owner took the time to engage and invest in each customer personally without the feeling of being rushed. Even the local customer who was hanging out working was kind to us and wished us well. It was such a nice refreshing environment. The whole menu looked delicious and they have some fun retail products. I imagine each cup o coffee is made with love as this is what you feel when you come here. I have stopped by twice now (admittedly because Bella's has been closed? ) and it's been a pleasant surprise! Definitely has old-school Portland coffee house vibes so don't expect anything crazy and trendy-- although, as someone who wants their own coffee shop one day, this space has SO MUCH potential.) The service has been sweet, I can tell it's a couple that owns it, and from my impressions-- he does most of the barista work. He makes a great cup of coffee!! I was skeptical, but I have been pleased twice now. My only suggestion would be to add more savory choices to the menu! The sweets I've tried are nice but I've been on the hunt for some savory breakfast stuff (hence venturing to Bella's) Refuge has bagels, I'd love if they did bagel breakfast sandwiches.. also suggest taking a window marker to the pastry case and labeling what they have! read more

I just moved into the area, so naturally I had to try the local coffee house. It looks cute on the outside, and even cuter on the inside! Spacious and bright, but also cozy and inviting. The staff are super friendly and passionate about coffee, and the menu has some great speciality items as well as time-honored classics. I love how the interior is broken up into cozy seating areas with couches as well as regular tables, and of course I totally dig the mid-century modern record cabinet and vinyl collection!
