The employee seemed generally sour, though, and the bathroom was complete filthy, the filthiest cafe bathroom I have seen in portland, worse than any corner dive bar. Choice little coffee spot on a quiet spot across from a huge park that looked lovely. If I lived near by this would be an idea place to grab on the go or "coffee n chill"! Pretty terrible customer service, which is the main thing keeping this place from being better. you feel like an inconvenience to the employees who do not greet, do not thank you, ignore other customers as they leave the establishment even though they say thank you multiple times. Espresso shots improperly extracted. Asked for oat in my americano, did not get it. Ambiance is fine for an oldies coffeehouse that feels stuck in time. Furniture is crusty and obsolete. I really dislike being the "picky" person, and by no means would I consider myself a coffee snob.. but I am a barista. As I write this, I am staring at my hideous, nasty coffee. I ordered a coconut milk latte with hazelnut. The service was pretty quick, especially for a latte and one guy at the counter.. but upon taking a sip (while still in the shop) I quickly realized this drink was disgusting and not at all what I had ordered. I went to the counter and asked for another shot, taking the lid off to maybe have the barista (dark haired dude with a nose piercing) notice that it was definitely not what I ordered... charged me for the shot, which is fine, and then proceeded to take less than 10 seconds to pull one. I'm assuming it was a short shot, as shot times vary on each roast, I didn't care too much. To no avail, the drink was still disgusting. I'm assuming he built the drink with hot water (like an americano) and put some coconut milk in there for color. I'm absolutely upset, mainly because my coffee was like $6 and my boyfriend and I decided to go to an *actual* coffee shop instead of Dutch/BR. Would have been way more satisfied had we gone to another place. The drink is basically liquid. Doesn't resemble a latte at all. The coconut milk is starting to separate, which is what leads me to believe he built it with water and not milk. I would've asked for a new drink all together, but he wasn't friendly and led me to feel if I asked, we'd have a problem. There goes $6 literally down the drain. read more

These guys carry one of my favorite chocolatiers that I've ever had. They are called bliss chocolates. He's such an artist and what he does and the chocolate literally melts in your mouth. I send them to my family back in Michigan for all the holidays directly from Bliss himself. He is out of Washington, and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I'm so glad that space monkey carries these so I can give them to local friends without shipping. It also led me to some very great coffee and service by a young gentleman that was working. Consistently disappointing. If we put in an online order, they'll ignore it until you come to pick it up. If you order a chai latte, they'll forget the chai. This is a cool place and friendly place. They bake their goodies there. They have few tables for working and studying. I tried their glutton free morning glory muffin. I could eat that all day long; especially knowing they using organic ingredients. The only downside is their hours. They close early. However they are open until six during the summer. What a hidden gem. I rarely come this way, but when I do and I need a caffeine fix you can bet your sweet bippy that I'll be here. The owner (or at least I think he's the own because I've only seen him there) is rad. Very down to earth, goes the extra customer service mile and he sports some awesome band T shirts. They serve organic coffee and flavors which makes me intestine happy! You'll also find cool art and jewelry from local artists here. The best thing about this place is the acoustic guitar tucked away in the corner for random rockage. They understand and embrace the need to rock out when your inner rock god comes a knock'n! I come here on the weekends for a coffee drink I wouldn't spend the money for on a regular weekday. The staff isn't unfriendly, like I've seen mentioned in other reviews, but no one's trying awkwardly to be your friend. It's also entirely possible that I have had a different experience of this place and, for whatever reason, positive interactions with the staff. My fancy weekend coffee drink is a Banana Chocolate mocha at a good fancy price (between 4 & 5 for 16 oz). They also have a Salted Caramel latte and a Bacon Maple thing, among other specials and standard coffee and tea drinks alike. My wife always gets the Salted Caramel latte. No one has tried the Bacon Maple thing. Maybe it's good? The art is good sometimes and other times very weird. There's a public computer, couches, a lending library, a sock monkey collection, games, and toys for small children. They are always selling local art and their roaster's beans, which are from Cellar Door Coffee Roasters. They make surprisingly good bagel sandwiches. The decor generally lacks polish, possibly because they are doing so many disparate things in one shop, but more likely it is a Bohemian flavored resistance to corporate coffee that is polished to a shine. All in all, it's my neighborhood coffee shop, and if you wanted to know what middle-Southeast Portland is all about, this would be a good place to start. read more

Great local spot with an at home feel. Great options with fresh local produce and ingredients. I enjoy their fun local products they carry of artwork, crafts, jewelry and other fun goods. Our favorite is the kid friendly atmosphere with their play area. We often run into other young families from the neighborhood that enjoy this spot as well. It's community feel keeps me coming back and has helped me to make new connections with other parents. I love their grasshopper smoothie and all their other options. We like to get their pano is and other fresh baked goods. Easy off street parking. Conveniently located across from our amazing Mount Scott Community Center and beautiful park. You know those reviews that start by saying "if I could give zero stars, i would..." yep, that's this place. The coffee and pastries are terrible. I'm not a picky coffee person, like, I sometimes get coffee from McDonald's lol. I've had mochas, lattes, and black coffee from this place because they're literally two blocks from my house and every time I regret that decision. The pastries look amazing but are extremely dry. The bagel sandwiches can be good. The real reason I'm giving such a negative review here is because of the owner who is almost always there when we come in. They have a kid play corner (dirty, but keeps the kids occupied for 15-20 mins) but the owner is not friendly to my kids. Why have a kid corner if you don't want kids to come in and be loud and messy? She also has a very crude sense of humor and language choices. Every time I've gone in, she is dropping the F-word etc. this doesn't offend me, but I think it's inappropriate in the workplace, especially when there are toddlers around the corner. We've also been in recently when she publicly scolded a teenage girl for being on her phone when walking up to the counter to order. The poor girl turned bright red and ran out the door! Again, it's ok if you have your pet peeves/preferences, but maybe you shouldn't be in the service industry if you can't graciously serve all types of people. Hmmmm... So, I come into this cozy shop needing some food and coffee on a Sunday afternoon. I walk up to the door, seeing a bunch of people inside. Walk in and I have about 4 people glaring at me. The owner? an employee? stops me and says, with a terrible negative attitude, did you see "my sign" on the door "we're closed." Okay, that's fine. I understand NOW you are closed. It wasn't NECESSARY for you to SHAME me in front of everyone. If you had common decency you would have nicely come up to me, smiled, told me you were closed (due to water issues) and then it would have been cool. I love supporting a local business, but this place needs to get their shit together before I ever go back again. I just left this place and will not be back. I watched a man get kicked out, very rudely and loudly for the entire establishment to hear, on the pretense of his service animal not wearing a vest (he said he had tags to prove the dog was a service animal). I don't appreciate this worker not following the laws about service animals. I'm maybe more upset that this man was treated with such disrespect, yelled at across the whole coffee shop instead of politely asked to leave. To me, the intense and horrifying rudeness seemed to be due to the fact he looked a little disheveled and maybe houseless.
