Bummed it took me so long to make it in but now that I have been smitten can be sure it will be hold a spot in my special treat out rotation. The morning crew was welcoming and did a fantastic job with coffee drinks and breakfast sandwiches alike. I appreciate that they offer honey as a sweetener option add on as it really highlighted the beans they were working with without overpowering with sweet. The rock and mineral collection is impressive and I'm sure I could feel the good vibes amplified thanks to the thoughtful displays throughout the space. Carnelian Coffee is on Foster near 82nd, it used to be further up Foster. Good coffee, some interesting and unique drinks and bites. I recommend trying it but there are many better options. One of the baristas, Whitney, is really incompetent imo. She cannot make a good drink. So I wouldn't order anything complicated if she's working. I preferred their old location. Otherwise, if you're in a pinch and need drip coffee NOW, try this place out. Better than Black Rock and Starbucks. But inferior to almost any 3rd wave spot. read more

I picked up some buddha beads in Thailand. Someone said they may be a carnelian stone. I cross Portland to see this coffee shop. Online it seems interesting, Foster and 82nd hmmm what could happen? I enter and was greeted by a very nice person eager to pull an espresso. We chat and I learned that they are to begin roasting inside their space. They have been around I think they said more than a year now. On the shelves and throughout I see rocks various... Luka one of the owners showed some rocks... one was a petrified log with some formations of rock imbedded. I really lack the knowledge to speak in-depth about rocks. I once gave a rock to this girl... cost me lots... made me feel good. Strolling on the beach I have picked up a rock here and there... all in the joys of life. The coffee... some of the best. The service and the space just as good. Space un the front and back places for someone to get a table break out your laptop. A few people chatting with friends. Henry Higgins bagels in the case. I ordered a Costa Rican espresso and it was delicious! The staff seemed comfortable and accommodating if need be. The music itself was not too upbeat, and the aesthetic of the design within the shop emulated that. The space is pretty nice with plenty of seating since it extends deep. Their seasonal menu looked good but they ran out of the one I wanted so ended up ordering an iced vanilla latte and it was just your standard vanilla latte, not really standing out much. Also ordered a matcha latte and it stood out in the worst way possible; it was flat out bland and mostly tasted like water with a hint of matcha. Service wasn't warm or anything, so nothing special there. read more

Very happy to be able to increase my rating to 5 stars. They've had some employee turnover in the last 6+ months and the new baristas are sooooo much nicer and more chill. Coffee is as delicious as ever and their new location is more spacious and as well-decorated and vibey as the last. Good: No vegan tax on the milk! Some yummy food options Nice lighting and atmosphere Not as good: For a mostly vegan coffee place, their breakfast and food options still feel lacking. When I went they were out of the vtopian cream cheese, which is probably the thing that gives their breakfast sandwich both flavor and price. They replaced it with tofutti and charged the same. I get it... businesses run out of stuff and can't really just lower their prices when they do. But I came here specifically for their vegan options, and there are not really a lot of good vegan cafes here, so to find that lacking was pretty disappointing. Not a many seats in the front and kind of a weird setup, but I like that the back hall seating area was pretty quiet. read more

I can't say enough about this home away from home coffee shop. My partner and I have been going here since they opened and we moved into the neighborhood. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with the warmest vibe and the rich atmosphere aroma of the best brew. If the smell of wonderful coffee isn't enough the amazing ambiance and decor with subtle hints of a futuristic dystopia "insert cantina music from a galaxy far away" The staff is incredibly friendly, always making you feel like a regular--even on your first visit. Their selection of specialty drinks is top-notch, even though I go for the classic drinks such as an americano. You can tell they care about every cup with the balance of flavor and aromatics that let the beans speak for themselves. They also have so many options of pastries that will pair well with any drink you order. It's an ideal spot for both a quick grab and go or a place to spend working or chatting with friends with their current location being so large and spacious but at the same time very cozy. I love that they have a great outdoor seating area perfect for enjoying coffee and snacks and hanging out with your fur babies. My partner and I see this shop as more than a place to grab coffee. The owners have literally built a community and it has become a place where you meet new people, connect and become friends with likeminded individuals. Bad attitude and rude owner undermine everything else this place has to offer. My partner and I were excited to discover this place when we moved to the neighborhood. Great vegan options, delicious coffee, nice space. But the person who I think is the owner is dismissive and stand-offish at best, and occasionally -- like today -- aggressively rude. It's a long narrow space, and my partner and I were sitting at the very back. Like most coffee shops, there was some noise going on, and I thought I had heard them call our order. I went up to check and asked if the drinks sitting on the counter were ours. There was no perceptible response, so I asked the person in question, "Are these the oat milk lattes." He acted like I had just thrown something at him. He looked up and, glaring at me, said slowly and condescendingly, "YESSS..." We had gone there to hang out, read, and enjoy our breakfast sandwiches and coffee, but it was hard to do that with that kind of vibe right as we were arriving. We thought maybe he was just having a bad day again, but then noticed that he was friendly and chatty with all the young hipsters who came in after us. So not sure if he just doesn't like how we look? Not going to guess what kind of bias could be at play, but it is honestly as disappointing as it is odd. I would love to keep going, but it is hard to want to give someone your money who treats you like crap. read more

Such a cute coffee shop in SE Portland neighborhood. I tried the hazelnut latte with oat milk and it was pretty good, not overly sweet which is always a plus thing for me. Would definitely come back to try their tea drinks. Just something to keep in mind, they only have up to 12oz coffee drinks so if you would like a bigger size you can bring your own personal cup, and I believe you also get a discount for bringing a personal cup in. read more

update: i decided to come back to give this place another try, because i could tell that the beans they used in the thunder egg was fragrant and strong. and i'm so glad i did. i ordered a 16oz iced honey latte ($6.50) and it was GOOD. satisfied my coffee cravings- the perfect amount of coffee, sweetness, and creaminess. service was about the same as last time, not overly friendly but just a barista doing their job. i would come back again just for their regular drinks and not their specialties, because it's just not what i usually like drinking. read more

I have the best neighbor in the world. When I fell down the stairs about a month ago, luckily for me, my neighbor Was found me in a disheveled heap at the bottom of the stairs and he even took me to urgent care where I got x-rays and a splint. You may be asking yourself what the heck does your clumsiness have to do with this coffee place? Well, it turns out that it is owned by Wes' son. And if you're still wondering where I'm going with this, I'll tell you. Wes brought up my mail for me and I lamented that I hadn't had any coffee in over a week. My Mr. Coffee passed away after 10 years of solid service. Wes told me that his son owns a coffee shop and they sell this Ugandan coffee that's just delicious. As promised, Wes popped in on me Monday morning with a thermos full of this coffee with a deep aromatic presence. I thanked him very much and poured it into my favorite coffee mug. I would love to have this coffee every day. It was so rich and smooth, so different than the Fred Meyer coffee I usually buy. I finished the thermos and returned it to Wes, thanking him profusely. Choose this place and happy I did. The inside is welcoming and cozy. I love the lighting choice and interior as it's very Portland. It's vegan, which I didn't notice when looking for a coffee shop, but delicious food. I chose the vegan toast with spicy tomato jam and it's great! Wonderful cafe to read, relax, do work, etc. parking is conveniently anywhere pretty much and the staff is great. When the regular coffee selection is actually pour over, and has a free refill, you know you've struck gold. At 2.50, instead of drip coffee, you get pour over, which is mind boggling!! We ordered a Thunder Egg and pour over, both of which were delicious. For pour over, they had two choices for beans, an Ethiopian and a Guatemalan. We opted for the latter and it tasted delicious. A lighter brew that had fruitier flavors, I am still shocked that it only cost $2.50! The Thunder Egg was a cortado with oat milk that also tasted very delicious. 10/10 recommend this cute little coffee shop, it is worth the trip! read more

The first time I went I liked it! I enjoyed the design of the space, the coffee was good and I was excited to come back. However after a few visits the one thing I noticed that was off was the the service. It almost feels like in order to work here you have to be a pretentious barista. Never a smile, never a "you're welcome" when I say thank you. Just a grumpy barista that seems annoyed that I even dare come in to have my order taken. There are plenty of other great coffee shops in portland with awesome baristas no need to come here and get some attitude with your coffee. read more
