This place is the type of place that seems deeply rooted in their own type of culture... a bit quirky, very Portland and a dash of vintage. This is not a modern type of place... it's more like a cozy spot where you run into neighbors and friends. The seating options are diverse and plentiful, so grab a warm beverage and plan to sit by the window for a while. Service was good, but not that distinctive either way. I ordered an Americano and it was ready fairly quickly. Prices were slightly above average for the market, but it was cool to be able to say that I was drinking something roasted by a local person. Street parking is available. It's a busy area but the shop is convenient for other errands in Sellwood. I probably wouldn't go out of my way based on this first experience, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back if a friend recommended that we meet there. Maybe the second time is the charm? read more

I got a lavender honey latte that reminded me of my favorite ice cream. It was perfectly smooth and lightly sweetened with a warm richness to it. When I'm in the Sellwood area this is my go to coffee place! Visited them for the first time 4-ish years ago and I only order the Cuban Latte; I'm sure everything else is great but that's my go to! I love the espresso and spices and how well they mix together and the spices give the latte and extra little kick of flavor. I've been coming to blue kangaroo for at least five years now, and I've always loved the coffee shop. The staff has been great, and the coffee is fantastic!! I just wanted to give a little bit of feedback on the past few weeks. I've noticed that there's a giant rush to go at the end of shift. I totally get it, and I've worked service jobs before so I really understand the need to wrap up and go home! However, putting 95% of the chairs up on the tables at 4:35 pm, even right next to and around my table while I'm packing up to leave, was honestly kind of rude. In the past, there's been a 15-minute notice from staff, not a nonverbal "get out" by packing up the whole shop. I hate leaving any negative feedback as it's really one of my fav places, but it felt important enough to say. read more

I'm relatively new to the area and needed to find a coffee shop for an informal meeting. This place had all the trappings of a great coffee shop, except that the husband/wife (?) team behind the counter were completely devoid of personality to the point of being rude. Even when I announced that this was my first visit, no smile, no welcome, no hello, no banter. When I smiled and attempted to engage my unfriendly barista about their baked goods, in spite of the fact that there was no one behind me in line, I barely even got eye contact. After I sat down I understood... this is yet another Portland classic where "only locals get a smile" kind of place. Again and again and again I witnessed that friendly vibe reserved for regulars, and that "Portland Chill" reserved for everyone else. This used to be my favorite coffee shop in my neighborhood, but the recent change in ownership has felt noticeable. The cafe is starting to feel like a convenience store - there's a huge cooler of energy drinks (who's coming to a cafe for that?) that's taken out the lounge/kids play area space, the counter is cluttered with chocolate bars, they're selling random trinket jewlery... and they tore down all of the local art that used to rotate on the walls. :( it no longer feels like the cozy Portland cafe I used to stop in to almost every day. I would say this coffee shop is really cute. They provide toys to play w for the kids and there is a nice patio area outside. I would give the coffee itself a 3 stars bc it was kind of bitter. Great coffee! I love their Brazil whole bean coffee! It is absolutely delicious! I would consider it a medium roast with notes of chocolate and hints of walnuts. I live in Camas, Washington, so when I make the drive out there, I always pick up two bags of their Brazil roast. read more

Seems to be understaffed. Came on a Sunday morning and they only had 2 staff members working, one taking orders the other as a barista. I first had to wait 15 minutes to order, then another 20 for my drinks. When my drinks were done they accidentally made one of them incorrect so I had to wait even longer for it to be remade. The barista seemed annoyed rather than apologetic that they messed up. Will go elsewhere for faster and better service as 35+ minutes is crazy for 2 lattes. read more

Blue berry scone was more like a large flat muffin, taste was alright, but texture was all wrong. It was more spongy and soft rather than.. crispy and dry? That doesn't sound right.. wasn't sconey. Absolutely wonderful coffee shop! I love Cuban coffee and not many places have it. Granted, their Cuban coffee here is not Cuban. So, if you drink it thinking you're getting the real deal, you won't like it, but if you drink it thinking of it as "The West Coast Version" it's pretty good. It's very similar to a Mexican Mocha, but a little bit tastier in my opinion. The price is pretty good, I was able to get two coffees for under 10. Some of the kiosks have better prices, but the staff here could not be better. The conversation with the employees was so fun. I absolutely love when employees are obviously happy! Doesn't that just speak well of a company when it's obvious that they take care of the people serving you. The decore is fun, but professional. The art is nice and tasteful, there is even an area for the kiddos. I think this is a delightful spot to meet up with someone. read more
