You know, this place doesn't look at all like a theater--from the outside. But step inside and you'll be so glad you did: lots of room, and everything is so clean and well-maintained, even though this theater, one of the only options in Knoxville to offer "smaller" films (art-house, documentaries, re-releases of classics), has been a fixture in town for over forty years. The staff is quiet, out of the way, only available as soon as you need them, never in your face or patrolling the aisles with flashlights. I've seen a couple films a year here for maybe five years--they've never let me down. One more thing: despite the name, this theater is NOT downtown! First time at this location - this is the absolutely worst movie theater I have ever been to in my entire life. We have the Unlimited pass, so normally we just book and go. Upon entering, nobody was checking tickets or guiding us. We figured out which Auditorium to go in to on our own and got stopped on our way in by staff congregating by the concession stand. They verified our tickets on the mobile app and let us in. Strange because they didn't check anyone else's tickets. Once we entered the room, an overwhelming stench of staleness, body odor, and feces slapped our faces so hard that we almost walked out. We discussed leaving but decided to stay hoping the foul stink would go away. The floors and seats were filthy and old. Compared to other Regals in the area, this one has the most uncomfortable seats. In the middle of our movie, the theater room next to ours must've started because the music and sound effects so loud that it distracted from ours. This was the first, and last, time I will be going to this establishment. What a gross let down. Bummer. read more

I am surprised that even though it's a small Movie theater, it's environment from the lobby, their rest rooms and the theater itself were superbly clean and inviting to watch. The only downfall is the outside and surrounding area seems a little bit sketchy and unwelcoming, that's why I just gave 4 stars, otherwise I'll give a five stars overall! read more

I've been coming to Downtown West for well over 20 years at this point. The fact that they're our only, true art cinema in town makes it a default go-to for seeing independent films. I love that it's still an old school theater. It reminds me of growing up, going to the movies with my family. There's still a pitch to most of the individual theaters, so it's not flat. The only reason I knocked it down a star is that they used to show truly independent films. Like I saw Caveman's Valentine and The Woman Chaser here. I know the market has changed, and they have to show bigger "indie" films. But I still long for those days of seeing two movies on a Thursday night, because the film was only in the theater for a week. read more

An amazing cinematic experience. This is truly a classic example of a safe, small cinema that plays independent and international movies. The manager at Downtown West is Crystal and she is an exceptional manager in on multiple dimensions (e.g. personal, professional, and knowledgeable). We would say she is like family but she calls us "family." So, it is an honor and a privilege to call this the best place in Knoxville to see a movie. Crystal is the kind of manager that takes great pride in caring for her theater and theater goers. Furthermore, she is highly knowledgeable and has magnificent taste in films. I write reviews for Letterboxd on a daily basis and I am a cinephile. Crystal can drop the names of the top tier auteurs in Hollywood, Europe, Bollywood, and Internationally. Downtown West is an old school high brow theater. In fact, I have been viewing films here since the mid 1990's. I specifically remember seeing American Beauty (1999) and All About My Mother (1999), and Talk To Her (2002) before I left Knoxville to obtain my undergraduate and masters education in Kentucky. These are simply three examples of award winning independent films that were played at this classy establishment. A great deal of Knoxville's theater goers look to Central Cinema for independent and international films. Central Cinema is nice but, they do not have the "best parking situation" nor the super friendly staff, nor do they provide the outstanding selection of films for a long duration. Downtown West has a wide selection of international, art house, and independent films that run for months. The parking lot always has a space even when it theater is packed. The restrooms are always clean and functioning well. I've never had a bad experience at this Regal cinema. It is absolutely our favorite hometown Regal theater and we hope to see it continue to prosper and be a home to cinephiles from all walks of life. Thank you for providing an awesome venue. read more

This movie theater is one of those I don't really know what these movies are / oh this is the bomb / low-key theaters. This Regal plays mostly indie, independent and Oscar nomination type movies. You will still have a blast as they have a full concessions bar along with wine, Beer & Spirits! Sometimes you can feel like a total boss by parking right in front of the building on the street with dedicated car parking. Maybe you can try to impress your date or wife for Valentine's Day and get there early. This is also a very convenient location as it is near Kingston Pike, West Knoxville and West Town Mall. Definitely do not forget to use your Regal card as points could stack up easily here. They do not have many showtimes but are on the official movie apps such as Fandango and atom The only negative I would have about this theater is the two that I went in you can tell they are aged and do not have Stadium style seating and everyone is on the same level so if you happen to get a very crowded or busy showtime and somebody in front of you is taller then you will have slight screening issues. read more

This theater reminds me of one back in Charlotte. It was the $1.00 movies. Old school theater that I used to go to as a kid, still stands even though the prices are really low. This theater is just that, the sound isn't great and the seating well, lets just say don't sit behind someone who's tall or else you won't see. This place is pretty empty, and I'm going to guess they release movies that aren't widely released everywhere else. I didn't take a closer look, but I'm guessing. I think this is definitely a good theater if you don't want to think about parking or overly amounts of people. read more

I have loved this cinema since the first time I found it ten years ago. As others have noted it is clean and the staff seems to be film fans. The one thing that I do not understand it is located in the cultural wasteland of West Knoxville. A theater such as this would be much better suited closer to the city center. One had hoped that with the new headquarters located on the growing South Riverfront there would be at least a small single screen located there to show quality cinema. That said we will continue to drive out west to support this gem of Knoxville. read more

This is the only movie theater worth going to. It shows independent films which are almost always fantastic but often overlooked by the mainstream. Rarely is this theater filled with people. Unfortunate for Regal but lucky for us. Top choice for seating. I did notice that the seating in this theater sits "low". I'd another person sits in front of you, it's quite possible you won't be able to see. Sit on one of the wings where there are only two seats! The snack options at this theater is another reason to patronize this establishment. They have many more choices for beverages, sweets, and salty snacks. Don't discount this theater. I could spend all day here seeing every single movie. Bring your Regal card for points and earn free popcorn and drinks and sometimes a free movie ticket. read more

The introvert that I am LOVES this theater! It is smaller, more quiet, and usually less crowded than the other Regal Theaters around. My favorite thing to do is come to an early afternoon movie by myself. If it's a weekend, I'll sometime grab an adult beverage at the counter as well. What a great afternoon treat! They tend to play the more artistic films and give light to the small known films. Bring your friends or come by yourself, you won't be sorry! read more

This theater truly is a hidden gem. A friend and I traveled to Knoxville from Nashville this past week (a good 2+ hour drive) to catch "T2: Trainspotting." It was the only theater in the entire state showing it. We are typically spoiled by having the renowned and recently remodeled Belcourt Theater in Nashville. It's truly our only saving grace as the rest of our 'cinemas' in the area are lackluster- for that of a better word- and tend to the mainstream appeal. The Belcourt typically books all the independent art house films and documentaries. I have no idea why Nashville has not received "T2: Trainspotting" (as of yet?)- but I'm so thankful Regal Downtown West in Knox was able to snag it. Aside from showing the good ones, this cinema holds it own piece of pleasant nostalgia. It definitely could use a bit more color/advertising outside to entice and make bystanders aware of how amazing it really is. The inside is very 90's (reminds me spot-on of the theaters I used to frequent as a child); however, it's as if the theater has been preserved with the utmost care and precision. The lobby, bathrooms, and hallways are meticulously pristine for even a new theater- much less one of this age. The ticket prices are average/or even a pinch lower. Concessions are standard. I also LOVED the decent sized beer selection with the option of wine (it is pricey for the ounces though) that were offered as well. The screen and theater (Aud. 8) were very appropriately sized. The sound isn't mind-blowing, but it serves its purpose. Certainly not too quiet or anything, just not mega-plex surround sound. The staff was also very mature and accommodating and even asked us about the film afterwards with good spirits. As much as I am thankful and will forever love my 'Belcourt' the best- I am thoroughly impressed and quite jealous that Knoxville offers such an amazing establishment for independent films. 8 SCREENS, exceptional cleanliness, and a great staff. I have no idea how the "bookings" really work (as far as per theater or per distributor)- but I will forever be grateful this theater is booking the movies that hardcore cult fans and avid film enthusiasts want to see. I shouldn't base my review off the fact that this place serves beer, but it's a factor. Downtown West is an old style movie theater made into an arthouse. It plays independent and small release films. None of the theaters have stadium or even elevated seating. The place is a relic, so serving beer is a serious plus! That being said, this old place has modern charm. It's the ONE place in Knoxville I can go to see films that aren't meant to be blockbusters. There are no lines, crowded parking lots, or slew of unruly teens. This place is all about those that like foreign, indy, and small films. So with or without beer, I'll be a patron as long as I'm a Knoxville resident. read more

How did the "scruffy little city" of Knoxville get so lucky as to have an art house movie theater like Regal Cinema Art at Downtown West? Maybe it's because Knoxville is Regal Cinema's headquarters... Whatever the reason, it's here, and Knoxville movie buffs get to choose from a decent selection of independent and foreign films. You actually have a better opportunity to catch these flicks in Knoxville (and the ticket prices are a lot lower) than in some major American cities. I hesitated to give this place five stars, because the physical facility isn't perfect -- some of the individual theatres (should I call them "screening rooms"? la-di-da...) are kind of small, there's no stadium seating, and the restrooms are kind of limited. I can live with those shortcomings, though. All in all, it's a great place to see movies -- away from the madding crowd watching the latest Hollywood blockbusters at the mall movie palace. read more

Since the Regal Cinemas headquarters are in Knoxville, the Downtown West Cinema 8 adds character and charm to the movie options in this town. The style and amenities of this theater seem almost quaint. You won't find stadium seating, and probably no digital showings. There is no gigantic, elaborate lobby to dazzle you. What they do offer, however, is just as valuable. Independent films, art films, and a clean, comfortable movie experience. If you are looking for a place to watch the latest blockbuster with big explosions and stadium style seating, this place isn't for you. I love the fact that this theater exists. I love that they don't feel the need to make it big and showy in the name of drawing a crowd. People who appreciate the style of films that they show, don't care about frills. Downtown west does an amazing job of showcasing smart films that are as the industry once intended, art. These are films where your favorite actor will take the role because it spoke to them in the way they dreamed of when they got into the business, rather than for a big, fat paycheck. The staff is always engaging. The theaters are kept clean. And the BEER...Finally, the theater also serves beer at the concessions. Never a long line. This theater has none of the comforts you would expect from one constructed in the past 25 years. The theaters are tiny and there is no stadium seating. I'm surprised they even have fandango machines. The only saving grace is they play artsy-fartsy indie films you won't find anywhere else. On my most recent visit there was a giant rip/tear/blemish on the screen which was very hard to ignore. If that wasn't bad enough, the picture looked slightly out of focus the entire time for both the previews and the film. I don't normally complain but I told one of the personnel about the focus problem during the previews but nothing ever changed. I'm suspecting the equipment in this theater is in such ruins that what I saw was as good as it gets. I won't go back. read more

Absolutely my favorite theater in Knoxville! They get the edgy, art house, independent and daring movies almost on one else shows in Knoxville. Place is always clean and well kept, audience members are respectful and well behaved. Only thing that could make this place better would be serving good beer! I went to a matinee show today and the price was $7.99. They do have senior, student and military discounts as well. You can also get a Regal Rewards card for free food and movies. read more

The Regal Cinemas Corporation in headquartered in Knoxville and has been a staple in the community since 1989. The theater has recently upgrade the seats in each of their eight theaters to larger more plush seats. Now with cup holders! The Downtown West offers digital projection along with a charming atmosphere. The Downtown West Theater has a unique beer selection and is reserved for the sophisticated movie goer. This theater needs the support of those who truly have a passion for films! It's not a fancy "stadium style" theater. It's outdated and small. But it is the only theater in Knoxville that plays the films that are not "blockbusters" but worthy of watching on the big screen. It's not the theater where you will see Avatar or Hangover 34. But you will see "The Beginnings" and "Cave of Forgotten Dreams". Films like these deserve a place to show them and I hope that Knoxville will never lose this theater. This is a fine art-house theater that has a monapaly on indie films shown in Knoxville. There is no stadium seating which is fine with me, the staff is cool and knowledgeable about film except for one guy who always seems miserable. I am generally surprised at some of the titles they show; films one could only see in a larger city. If you enjoy indies, it's worth the drive and they serve beer! read more

I guess people like this theater but I don't get it. It smelled like mold to me and the place was almost empty. Popcorn was not fresh but still cost a ton. Ticket window was closed and we had to get tickets at the concession stand. I won't be back and can't recommend it to anyone. read more

This theater is an asset to Knoxville. I've lived in much bigger cities that didn't have an 8 screen theater dedicated to independent film. While the theater itself is older than other regal locations, they do have a lot of the same amenities including Starbucks coffee and tea. I found the staff to be faster and more friendly than pretty much any theater I've been to. It was a very nice surprise! We are usually the ones holding up the line while our cashier prepares our hot tea. But this place is a well oiled machine! Walking into our auditorium I immediately noticed how clean the theater was. While it is an older theater and they don't have stadium seating, the seats were very comfortable! After reading someone else's review, we made sure to select seats that didn't have seats directly in front of us. The theater filled up fast but everyone was polite and adhered to the noise/cellphone policy (worth noting since this is still a rarity). The audio and picture for our film was great (The Shape of Water). My only complaint would be the super small bathrooms. Lines were out the door. read more

This is the only theater in all of East Tennessee where you can see most Sundance film festival greats or Oscar-nominated films. Every year, the best movies that I see are only showed at Downtown West. It is hands-down the best theater in the state. read more

By the way, I stopped in here today to see if the management could spare any mailing tubes used to ship movie posters, and the manager (Mark) was very accommodating. He took the time to run upstairs, search for my request, and came back down with six mailing tubes. He didn't have to do that, and he saved me a lot of money.
