    New restaurant! Excellent

You gotta try Regatta! We stumbled on to this new gem on the beach while foodie hunting for dinner. It was literally Their first open nite! We had 12 peeps and they seated us within 30 mins right in front of the kitchen! Dinner and a great show. The food was great. The menu had a nice variety of options. They have several catches of the day on the board above the kitchen and they offer the catch cooked different ways: wood fired, pan seared or backed depending on paring of fish and cooking style. Very cool. I had the Ceviche, wedge salad and chips. The Ceviche was done differently - thin sliced fish with citrus base and a nice assortment of veggies on top. The flavors were incredible. Totally yummy. One of our clan discovered a deconstructed oyster shot - oyster on half shell, shot of vodka and shot of spicy heaven. Of course I had one! It was sooooohhhhh nice. Other folks in our group had the wood fired tuna, pan fried snapper with crab and pine nuts, and the baked flounder. Everyone said the presentation and the prep was first rate. And of course, if the plates are empty and folks are smilin' seems like that is all good! Marina took excellent care of us all and if you live in Takapuna, check out Regatta. I believe you'll be very glad you did!

The location is amazing and one of the few places you can actually eat and see the sea. Good decor and ambiance. We managed to sit outside (you can't book those tables). Good beer and wine and food is generally pretty good. Certainly improved since it started a few years ago. Would have been a much better review but for the fries. $9.50 for a small, average portion that no where near what's required. When we mentioned this 'I'll talk to chef'. Do talk and please make some changes. Personally I think regatta is ideal for a wine or beer with a great view.

Takapuna residents have been screaming for a beachside bistro and I thought Regatta might just be the answer to our prayers. First things first, they've absolutely nailed the décor. It's beachside chic at it's best. Outside, there's big comfy booths with navy cushions, perfect for lounging cocktail in hand. The entire front of the restaurant opens up to spectacular beachside views, which I'm sure the chefs appreciate in this scorching AKL summer. They've thought about the details too; the fish and oyster of the day hang on wooden signs about the pass. It was windy when we went so we nabbed a seat inside, close to the glass doors where the sun was streaming in. Shortly after being seated a waiter opened the door directly behind me, causing gusts of wind to funnel in. I asked it we could shut it and she said that there was too much smoke in the kitchen (isn't that what extraction fans are for?) and that it was the only door you could open without having to open the entire front of the restaurant - slight design flaw. To her credit, she did offer to move us but fortunately the wind petered off. Onto the food, we started with 1/2 doz Clevedon Coast oysters that were beautifully fresh but perhaps a little small, but to be fair, this is to be expected in Summer. For my main I choose Hapuka, p/f with courgette, broccoli, salted lemon, crab and pinenuts ($32.50). The fish was well cooked but was very salty, whilst the rest of the dish had virtually no seasoning. The courgette came in the form of a smooth, but flavourless puree smeared across the plate. The broccoli was steamed in florets and served cold along with three roasted, also cold, cherry tomatoes. A few pinenuts, crab and a slice of preserved lemon were scattered throughout. There was nothing to tie the dish together, not even a touch of olive oil. My dining partner faired better. He went for the roasted swordfish w grilled yeasted cauliflower, burnt butter, capers & watercress. There were also currants in there and it was a devine combination. The only problem was it was a rather thick piece of fish and it was completely raw in the middle, which personally, I think is strange for roasted fish. We called the waiter over and asked it this was how it was intended to be served. She didn't know and offered to go ask, walking away without the dish. We quickly suggested she take the dish with her to show the chef. Now here's the problem with open kitchens, you can see how people react. The waiter takes the dish over to the chef and you can see he is visibly angry, having stern words with the waiter. She soon returns and says yes, this is how it supposed to be cooked but they'll pan fry the raw piece. My issue here is 1) if you're going to have an open kitchen, keep in mind that customers can see your reactions and temper your response. 2) Restaurants should have a procedure in place when a customer complains about a dish. Personally, I think the dish should be removed immediately and a manager should be notified so that they can smooth things over. More often than not, it's not the issue that people remember but instead, how it was deal with and unfortunately Regatta did little to remedy the situation. They did return the raw fish, well-cooked on a side plate, so that's something. Regatta is still very new and hopefully these issues will be ironed out over time. I have heard rave reviews from others so I am hoping we went on an off day!

Not sure what's wrong with the people down, but this place is great. I would give them five stars, but they were out of oysters.

Really good choice of seafood dishes; we had the market fish (red snapper) in a ginger and garlic sauce, just delicious, melt in the mouth stuff. They were a bit short on dairy-free desserts, but we had the sticky toffee and date without the ice cream, which managed to fill in those few small holes that remained. We're booking again for the weekend! Three times we've eaten here. Definitely our favourite place in Auckland.

They showed us the modern architecture, focused on sustainability, public spaces, restaurants and bars, and vibrant marina living in this redeveloped harbor area, which had quickly become a destination for tourists and locals. From the Jellicoe Harbor Breakwater built in 2020 to calm the waters for race boats and supporting yachts since Auckland's Waitematā Harbor hosted the 36th America's Cup, we could clearly see the cruise port from where we disembarked and the city center. Geoffrey and Margaret insisted on showing us the waterfront and promised to take us to a seafood restaurant. We mentioned that we love eating seafood, but were "preserving" our stomachs for casual, comfort, or unfussy food because we had been eating gourmet cuisines over the past 17 days while in Australia and during our cruise. We were thankful that they understood our request and dropped us off at our hotel to freshen up for dinner while Margaret made the reservation for an early dinner. We returned to the Wynyard Quarter's waterfront to Swashbucklers seafood restaurant, where we immediately felt comfortable with the vivaciousness of the hostess and server. We started our meal with icy-cold Peroni beers while sharing the tasty steamed mussels and garlic bread. Our server mentioned their fresh catch of the day was a snapper, which I adore, so I ordered it while my husband, Geoff, and Marg ordered the Fish & Chips, which we were told was a signature dish to Swashbucklers. All the food was flavorful and well-prepared. We were mostly impressed with the quality, quantity, and flavor of the steamed mussels. My husband gushed about the crispy, light-battered fish and the excellently textured chips. I enjoyed the tender pan-fried snapper with garlic butter, and complemented the fish with a slice of garlic bread. We'd love to return for the camaraderie, flavors, and flavors at Swashbucklers. 4.4 stars

Sadly, we didn't get the fish sliders because they were sold out! But we did get some of the same dishes I had ordered before but got oysters as well. The oysters were fresh and tasty, especially with their vinegar sauce. My friends also loved the charred eggplant and a couple of them don't really eat eggplant. The crispy potatoes were so good! The truffle wasn't too overpowering and they were perfectly crisp. The steak was super tender and juicy and the wedge salad helps cut the fat and compliments the steak as well. In fact the worst case of 'throwing a young inexperienced staff member under the bus' I have ever seen by a management in my life not to mention the bad service and average meal. When we were first seated the young waitress (clearly as I said earlier inexperienced and perhaps in her 'new' holiday job) was tentative and friendly and attempted to make my friend a Long Island Iced tea which was not on the menu. Entrée's came out without a problem and these were nice. But then out came the mains. Total inconsistency. A steak meal I ordered and asked for mash potato came with a tiny dollop - more like a decoration on the side of the plate as was the wilted decoration of salad even though the menu said it was served with this for $30. Then my other friend ordered for $2 more a steak and calamari board and received not only a huge amount of calamari but a big serving of fries. Very much different to my plate. It doesn't cost more to serve mash potato versus fries. The steak was ok but I have had better and would go to the Grill or the like for a better night closer to home for similar price. So this is where the trouble brewed, I kindly asked the waitress if I could have more mash and instead of sending my plate back for the Chef to fix she came out with fries (which I didn't ask for) and she commented that she should have noticed my portion size. I replied "I am not blaming you, it's the Chef's problem not yours". We believe the Chef (also the owner) probably gave her an earful in the kitchen. My friend had the exact same meagre serving of spud as I on her plate but no fix was offered to her. From then on she dropped the ball and service was no more. We had to ask for cutlery, which another staff member bought us. Then we had to ask for water, we got one bottle to the 5 of us and in a very hot restaurant with no air con, then it was not replenished. One friend ordered a drink which never came and the table never got asked later if they wanted to order more drinks. This was a massive loss of dollars for them not to mention our dehydration. All the while the Matre D (co-owner) was standing behind the counter in view of us talking and appearing to look at a laptop or phone. My friend caught her eye a few times but she never came over. Later and small credit to the Chef he sent out one Chocolate brownie dessert for us all to share to apologise and this dessert was very muddy and delightful but the damage was already done. After the meal with the knowledge that I was going to write a bad review I thought I would advise the Management of our dismay over the bad service and she just blamed the waitress entirely and said she knows better. Meanwhile the girl was in tears. We reminded her that it was her that is meant to train new staff and oversee. From the counter she could see if tables needed anything and if her staff were doing their job. It's for the better of their restaurant or this will result in their doors closing. There is so much better competition out there I don't need to go over the bridge to Devonport for a bad evening. I suggest this waitress gets out of there fast and finds more pleasant employment with management that care enough to develop and take the blame. Toxic environment. Not people I would ever want to support.

Enjoyed this place. Service was friendly and efficient. The food was excellent. Many meat options.read more
