This office utilizes the AutoRefrator and tonometer. You have the option to do an Optomap as well for an additional $20. My appointment was with Dr. Mei. She was knowledgable, professional, and spoke with care. I did the Optomap retinal imaging and she did a great job going through what the eye health status was utilizing the photos. My appointment was very quick (about 10 minutes total), but I did not feel rushed at all. I would come back for future exams! read more

Both front desk lady and the optometrist or ophthalmologist (whatever she is) treated me like I'm asking for a handout without making any attempt to understand what my needs were only to find out they were both wrong. The blonde lady at the front is very rude! I came in exactly at 1pm when my appointment was set for. At that exact time another patient who was waiting on the bench outside gets called in the office. I went to the lady at the front and told her I have appointment at 1pm. With a very rudely tone she says "the appointment are getting late, it happens sometimes" and I asked "how long it is going to take" and then she replied "it going to take how long the doctor is going to need"! I thought I'd try and save a little money and time and get my prescription from from the office of Dr. Regine Smet inside Costco. I was examined by Jonathan Duong, OD. At the end of the examination I explained that I still was not seeing his chart clearly. I was told that due to a low level cataract that this was as close as he could correct my vision. Although not feeling 100% comfortable with this diagnosis I deferred to his opinion and had 2 pair of glasses made at the Optical desk in Costco (Costco Optical Dept. has no relationship with the doctors in their building). After receiving the 2 new pair of glasses, they confirmed my thoughts that the prescription was in fact incorrect. I called and rescheduled an appointment in order to be re-tested. When I arrived the doctor tested my lenses and said they were correct and matched his prescription. I asked that he please retest me since I did not agree with his assessment. He refused to re-test me and that was that. The next day I went and saw another OD in my area. His prescription was quite different than Dr. Duong's. The new OD was able to correct my vision beyond what Dr. Duong said was possible. Because of Dr. Duong's refusal to re-test, I had to pay $99 out of pocket for the 2nd opinion and testing. I will conclude by saying that I was stunned by Dr. Duong's refusal to take a 2nd look. I was not even given the benefit of the doubt that maybe there might have been something wrong with the original diagnosis. read more

I have been going to Dr Smet for years even when I have my own insurance and I had to pay extra from my own pocket . The fee is nothing compared to her service and expertise . The reason for being is that when I did my research I found out that she is one of the three best optometrist in Los Angeles. And true enough she truly is. She is detailed in her explanation of the picture of your eyes , and I have always been satisfied with her prescription for my eyes. And she also has modern machines to check your eyes by taking pictures of them before she does her actual examination. The reason why I only give 4 instead of a perfect 5 is the attitude of the two staff manning the front desk. They seem cold with unwelcoming attitude. But for Dr Smet , I would give her a 5. I went to see Dr. Jonathan Duong for a comprehensive eye exam earlier this week. I got a prescription for glasses. He also told me I had low tear production and to use Refresh tears. Awesome. I asked him if he could write a letter indicating this so that I could purchase over the counter eye drops and use my flexible spending account to pay for it. He said he doesn't write letters and that I needed a Medical Doctor to write the letter. Not true. If you're going to be providing healthcare services under your license as a Doctor of Optometry, then BE a healthcare provider. If you want the designation as a Doctor of Optometry, then BE a Doctor. You shouldn't be pushing the responsibility to someone else. It's not like I'm asking you to write for something that has to do with another body part. It is under your scope of practice as an optometrist to recommend OTC eye drops. If you can't do that, then you definitely shouldn't be providing healthcare services or writing prescriptions for people who have diabetes, glaucoma, etc. read more

When it was worse the next day, I called to be seen because my family was worried about me. Call #1, a friendly gal, she told me to just come in when I could get a ride. (Couldn't drive myself in case I needed my eyes dilated). She warned me to come before school lets out (gets busy). Call #2, to let them know I was on my way. She sounded different! When I got there, it was a different staff member. This gal was more concerned with her personal cellphone, than the patients. (This Optical trainee looked at my eye and said it did NOT look like a broken blood vessel, but a bad scratch). Then, I met the not so friendly Dr. I'd seen her back in 2012, she wasn't as burned out back then. This is where my $20 eye check (for the problem) turned into a full eye exam and update my prescription, at the cost of $109!!!! They told me it had been 3 YEARS, I couldn't believe it had been that long!! That's because it wasn't!! I turn on Yelp and there's my review from April 2012!!! This AM I realize she NEVER used drops and the light to check for a scratch, which is the ONLY way!!!! What a CROOK!!! She also tried to get me to change the brand of contacts so she could charge me for fitting!!! How sad it is that people use other people in distress (eye injury) to take advantage for profit!!!! Now, I have to figure out how to get my eye looked at, as it worse again today!! This "dr" is located IN Costco. I do like purchasing my contacts and glasses there, but do NOT use this person!! For the four-eyed, blind walker that I am, I need these things called glasses. While Lasik is something I'd rather do later in life, glasses come in the short list of things I need after food, water, shelter, and clothing. Without it many of us can't drive or function. Blurry-vision, apparently, isn't amusing to anyone. About every year or so I update my prescription. With the little time I had, I gave my local Costco a quick call. They had a same-day appointment available for a Tuesday evening. They had three openings starting at 5:45 p.m. and off I went. With a no-thrills, no frills attitude I signed-in and went through an initial screening process of checking for glaucoma and peripheral vision. This was included with the eye exam. The exam itself was short and sweet, as I presented my old prescription for a baseline. In about 15 minutes I was set with a new prescription and PD measurement (requested). The PD measurement was kindly given; as I was frank in stating I would probably buy my next lenses online. While I love how both Dr. Regine Smet and the receptionist were not pushy at all, I felt like I had to ask a few questions to get a better picture (pun intended) of what my options were and their costs. I opted for an extra service of taking pictures of the back of my eyes, to that I later found out was an extra twenty bucks. While I wish I knew beforehand, I was glad to ask a ton of questions about the makeup of my optic nerve and the surrounding areas as a result of these pictures. I even learned what a fovea is and proceeded to Google the living crap out of it later. Overall, the service is straightforward. It can improve and grow in information, however. Yet I know this eye exam office is in a high-volume environment and suffers common satisfactory, personable efforts. On the contrary, it's not a handholding session. It's very quick exam, and there is room to grow. Dr. Smet is a professional and very knowledgeable about everything your brain could wonder about vision. She doesn't seem swayed, like many doctors, to endorse one product or another. Rather, she'll tell you the facts and let you make your own decisions after laying out your options. This review is regarding Dr Jonathan Duong and in no way reflects the service from the front office assistant who is very nice, nor Dr Smet with whom I have rescheduled an appointment with next week rather than continue my appointment with Dr Duong. From the moment I stepped inside and asked if the surface on which he invited me to put my belongings was sanitized between patients I had a bad feeling because he was so defensive and abrasive; suggesting immediately that if I believed he was lying I did not have to put my things there. It was covered in leaflets and so when he said it had been sanitized I did indeed find it difficult to believe and I kept my belongings on my lap. When I asked about blended bifocals he said he knew nothing about them and only ever recommends progressive or single vision lenses. I have multi distance needs and do not tolerate progressive lenses well and was surprised that this Dr's knowledge is so limited. Dr Duong became agitated and quite clearly did not want to engage in conversation about my needs and concerns, unlike every other medical professional I have ever encountered. I didn't feel comfortable in his presence and decided to end the appointment before the actual eye exam commenced. Dr Duong responded to my observation of his unprofessional demeanor by slamming the door to his office while I made a new appointment with Dr Smet. This is the first bad review that I have given to any business. UPDATE 09/23/2020 My subsequent appointment with Dr R Smet today was a pleasant experience. Time was taken to discuss my needs, options and eye health with mutual respect and patience. I would not hesitate to recommend an eye exam with her. read more

Definitely giving them two stars because of the nice office attendant, if it weren't for her, I'd give one (preferably 0). The optometrist (much like a few reviews below said) acts like she has much better things to do. I will not be going back here ever again if I don't have to. I asked if I could try on 2 Sea-green contacts (Fresh-look) to try the color, and she only let me have one and said it's because if she gives me two i might not go buy the contacts and just wear those....HUH?!!?!?!....I just paid $90 for my exam, clearly I'm going to be buying contacts! I would try a different Costco if that's the reason you're coming here. AND I would suggest to her that she finds a different career if she's just too good for this one. read more

Having an appointment, I walked in. the receptionist, checking my insurance, claimed she couldn't get hold of anybody and probably didn't take my insurance anyway. She did not check the website or was unable to from her computer. Using the customer number on the insurance card, I called and got the information requested. I played it for her on speaker. She looked at me and shrugged, stating she could not confirm or hear the information provided over the speaker. I saw a male optometrist at this office about a year and a half ago, for my first time needing glasses/contacts. The experience with the optometrist (turns out it wasn't Dr. Smet) was fine, however, the experience in the office and specifically follow-up contact lens training was abysmal. I'm leaving this review now because I just saw a different optometrist to update my prescription and it made me realize just how substandard the experience was. After a very rapid but uneventful exam, I was handed over to the front office to learn about how to use contacts. That turned out to be a session with someone who appeared to be the very young son of the woman handling the front desk. Being inexperienced, I did not know just how wrong his instructions were, never mind the fact that he told me I was having trouble inserting contacts because my "eyes are like, really really small." I let that and just generally completely unprofessional behavior go because he was so young. Come to find out after going to a different optometrist, I've been cleaning my contacts wrong all along (as instructed at the office), likely damaging the lenses in both form and function. Turns out you AREN'T supposed to fold them in half and rub. Duh (yes, I feel dumb). Now I know why my one month contacts only lasted two weeks. FURTHERMORE, turns out the Doc either reversed the prescription or made an error as to which is my dominant eye. New optometrist was quite surprised my eyes had adjusted. None of this is the fault of the young man they had working there-it's the responsibility of any kind of healthcare office to ensure staff are qualified and trained at the very least. I would STAYAWAY. Never mind how hard it was to get through on the phone or any of the minor irritations, it's just not reliable or professional care. Had I ever needed glasses before I might have known. Grateful to have found an excellent optometrist now, and ironically, one less expensive than this Costco outpost. read more

I did mention to him that I have watery eye on left side only and history of being diagnosed with dry eye previously. He kept talking in rudely manner about how my each word could change his diagnosis. And that dry eyes are only bilateral. I reasserted that I am only having watery eye on left side and I agree with him that I should see opthalmoslogist. He however seemed upset that I came to get my prescriptions checked.
