Went in for bike tires, asked a question about tire size. My first time buying tires for my particular bike so i was unfamilar with the "new" size. Anyways i asked clerk for help and asked what stem type. I have no idea what the stem names are! I told her i really didnt matter and she came back with a rude answer about fitting in a hole. All along i thought she was talking about the pump. When i realized what she ment i was still like whater and told her i needed the Schrader. She was so snippy i was scared to ask her if there was a way to check. I felt i was inconveniencing her. Luckly my bike takes both. As for the store overall, they are social distancing great whatever but you had 1 cashier. Check out took forever and i have a back issue and cant stand in one place for long. Not an REI junkie like most people. The only thing I've bought from here is my go pro and go pro accessories only cause I don't feel like waiting for it in the mail. I do like this location thoug a lot better than the cal expo location. This location is easy to get in and out of even though it's located in a big shopping center. The employees are always friendly I can't complain about the store. It's a good store nothing amazing but not bad. I'll be going back here again for some more go pro accessories. read more

I enjoy going to REI for the experience of trying things on, checking out the sale rack and seeing my options for various toys, gadgets, clothing, etc. However, I would have to say that their prices can be a little...pricey. I can usually find the same items on Amazon for less. The customer service is...good but not spectacular. Their return policy has changed a lot and they don't honor returns for the lifetime of the item. Beginning in 2015, they will honor the return within one year (LAME) or so that is what the lady behind the counter told me. read more

I walked into REI looking for a seal for my Hydro-Flask. Everyone was busy so i caught the cashier's attention and ask her where I may find them. She told me they no longer carried the seals but i could get in line and they may have a few in the back. I proceeded to get in line and after waiting about 15 minutes, I was called by the same cashier and she asked me for my membership number. No i was not a member. Then she asked me if i was sure i purchased the hydro-flask at that store. I told her about 3 years ago i purchased a bout 5 of them for Christmas gifts at that store. She then asked me for my receipt. I did not have my receipt. She then looked at me and said we have none in the back room. Beside the Covid-19 issue, we're also dealing with looters... she went out of her ways to help me pick up my orders (online)... I missed them the first visit because their hours had changed so I came back the next day (store closing 1 hour earlier than expected) due to potential looting/rioting happening all over the US.. I got there right at closing and all the employees were gone, she was the only one left and still helped me as she was trying to close up the store. I truly appreciate it, saved me a third trip. Hydroflask is awesome! About a year ago, I received a Hydroflask growler from REI. My growler started leaking, so I contacted Hydroflask, hoping they would send me a new gasket for the cap. The service request on their website was pretty simple. They quickly sent me a brand new growler! Can't beat that service! read more

I was very disappointed in the quality of a "REI brand" backpack that I purchased. The waist belt tore away from the pack. I went to the Folsom store for a return or partial credit but was advised that I had the pack over a year so the sale was final. I had only used the backpack several times and it is in great shape other than the torn waist belt. I understand their policy of "no returns if the purchase was made over a year ago" but still bummed that the pack failed. I am buying a new backpack but it will not be a "REI" brand pack. read more

Despite advertising as closing at 7pm on Sundays, this location decided to close at 6pm and alert people at the door they were closing early due to "a need to do inventory." After driving the 30 minutes to REI to make a large order, I expected the store to close at 7pm on Sundays as always. Closing the store early, saving a buck doing inventory by inconveniencing customers, just ensured I will never shop this location again. I encourage REI corporate to question the general manager of this location and find out their rationale. Whatever it is, changing customer hours at the last minute should always be seen as more costly than cost-effective. I encourage other REI patrons to avoid this location on principle. Encourage whichever employees you have bonded with to take hours at other locations and work with them there. read more

I had the best experience here! I've never shopped at an REI before and popped in to rent equipment today. The rental area was busy but the staff were very helpful and kind. I went to REi for the first time the other day after another local bike shop tried to rip me off and get money out of me. Adrian the bike mechanic was super helpful and very friendly. He turned my day around and showed me how everything worked on my new mountain bike and reassured me that my bike is fine and didn't need the $300 of repairs the other shop was trying to get out of me. Who knew my quick visit would turn into 3 hrs. I came into try on ski boots after doing lots of research online and narrowing it down to 3 pairs. Little did I know that you can schedule fitting appointments online now and they only allow 2 people at a time! Unfortunately my luck hit rock bottom and when I arrived I was told to scan the code which would put me in line virtually. I assumed it would be about 30 or so min so I waited...An hour and a half later a very nice man asked if I needed help & I mentioned still waiting...The most frustrating thing was that the same man had been trying on shoes the entire time & he would just sit in them for 10 min. I would have appreciated if they encouraged had a max time limit or didn't encourage that behavior. Fortunately the REI worker took me to a different area to help me out and I would give him 5 stars. He was thorough and I was in and out after that point within 30 min. I actually left the same time as the guy that had been trying on shoes when I walked in. 5 stars for the man that helped me but the rest of the store needs to figure out a better system so that their customers aren't waiting 2 hrs. read more

I'm a Jackie of all trades. Attempting to pick up as much information as possible in order to keep boredom at bay and other known intricacies known to the dating world. For the ones who know me, if I'm not keeping busy, sometimes the best of intentions can turn deadly. So I'm rebuilding an old Specialized POS. I'm learning how to bead some jewelry pieces. A friend of mine "commissioned" an oil painting from me so I have some planning to do for this gift. Still need to learn how to jog (I'm the Asian slug when it comes to jogging) and lose the last ten pounds. For a good example, listening to some of my female friends interrogate me about current dates is a deadly waste of time. I know it is all good because they want to make sure I'm heading in the right direction with a decent person, not some spineless creature from the black lagoon. But I usually leave these interrogation sessions with doubt and sometimes suspicion. Even with the positive support, sometimes I prefer the male approach: going with the flow and just don't give a shit. So, in order to go with the flow, I've been tweaking on my bicycle project to keep bad thoughts away. This old Specialized POS is slowly but surely coming to life, despite the little picks here and there at all the local bike shops I've been haunting lately. I recently replaced the gear shifters with a new pair. The brake and shift cables have been installed. I probably need a new derailleur but not at the moment. The guys with tats at the local stores pepper me with questions: "What kind of bike are you working on?" "How old is this bike exactly?" "Why don't you just buy a new bike?" I don't walk away from things I've invested too much time or money in. Good thing I don't invest money in relationships, which may explain why I've been known to simply walk away and not worry about any incidentals other than the usual toothbrush or pack of gum I left on the counter. Invest conservatively and walk away with minimal loss. Ok, so enough with my blogging rant. Back to REI. I wanted to replace the cassette on my POS and the guy helping me out with the update also states that my wheel is bent. Everything on this bike is old, rusted and the grease is blacker than the oil in my ten year old car. !@!$!@!$!@#!@! I end up at the REI located in Folsom because after I did a search online for Park Tools, I managed to locate two stores that not only carry the Cassette Lockring Remover tool but a Spoke Wrench as well. Yes. My wheel needs truing as well. SIGH. This REI has a larger Bike section (in my opinion) and outfitted with more tools than the one located at Arden. Both items were inexpensive and I wandered over to the daypack section but was disappointed to find that area somewhat lacking. When I was perusing the hiking socks aisle, an associate came by to ensure I was finding everything I needed. At the checkout, since I had forgotten my REI card, the associated looked it up by my telephone number. "I use to live in SF. " He sighed and told me the streets where he once resided. I just smiled back and nodded back. I dated a douche who lived two blocks from his intersection. Slightly smaller than most of the REI sites I frequent, but in terms of more bicycle tools, this one was successful in providing me with what I was searching for. A smaller daypack/backpack section, good variety of women's North Face brand and Prana daywear. Shoe selection is slight. The service was great and even though I'm not one to look like the common helpless lost-in-space shopper, I do appreciate the associates checking in with me from time to time. A purchase under $15. We had a credit and decided to get my bike tuned up. I threw it in the back of the hatchback, drove it over, and walked it to the bike department. The bike mechanic came out and started to look at it. The advertisement on the website said "REI IS A FULL SERVICE BIKE RETAILER CARRYING A BROAD ASSORTMENT. ..AND IT'S FULLY EQUIPPED AND READY TO HANDEL YOUR REPAIR NEEDS ON ALMOST ANY BRAND OF BIKE, INCLUDING THOSE WE DON'T CARRY. ...OUR MASTER TECHS ARE CERTIFIED. BIKES CAN BE COMPLICATED BUT GETTING THE RIGHT SERVICE DOSENT HAVE TO BE" No sooner does the master tech start looking at it, does the bike manager walk over and say "we're not certified...for that bike." She said she didn't want the liability of working on my Bike-e with standard, off the shelf bike parts. Do not take your bike here unless the manager has received, reviewed, and approved your bike first. read more

Selection is just okay. Was sold a membership based on a return policy, and was scammed. Had a problem with one piece of climbing equipment and after spending around $10k here in two years Brad decided that he would be argumentative and insulting. I eventually won the argument and got my way after being talked to like Brad was my dad for 20 or so minutes. That's my last experience and money transaction with REI! Total garbage. Way over priced. Just head over to backcountry and save money with people who will treat you like climbing partners and not a kindergartner. THE ONE STAR IS FORCED UPON ME. read more

My Dog gives REI Folsom one star! She went there today to look at the doggie vest/pack systems, maybe a cooling vest, and a new travel water dish. Just as she got to the door, "Service Animals Only" greeted her! How in the world can she try things on if she can't even get in the door? REI has gone Dog Unfriendly??? Really? REI? Seems to us the stores in WA or OR are fine with their four legged customers. Maybe a company policy change? Or is it just Folsom? So after a major doggie heart-break,she got an ice cream, did some shopping at Home Depot and Tracker Supply (both companies smart enough to like customers with a long tail and floppy ears) and then home to surf the net (read: Amazon) for that doggie gear. My Dog says, "Get with it REI...the hip businesses are always dog friendly." You lost some business today. read more

When a deal is not a deal. REI is like a McDonald's for outdoor equipment: you know exactly what to expect when you walk into one. I mean that as a form of respect. When I come up against the unexpected at a place like this, it has an impact. Hence this review: not for revenge or that I expect something from REI but to let others know what to keep an eye out for. I purchased a pair of skis at the fall sale as a surprise for Wifey. They were last year's model (already marked down) so I saved a nice deal of money (really, if you take your time, there's no sense in paying retail for skis). I took the Wife's boots in to mount the bindings. No one told me that it would cost to mount the bindings. When I went to pay was when I noticed the additional charge (which effectively wiped out the fall sale price). The explanation was "If you purchase full-price boots and skis, we don't charge mounting but since this is on sale, we charge the full amount". Seriously, with the new integrated mounting systems newer skis have, it's a 10 minute operation to slide on the bindings, set the DIN and test. I'm effectively paying these people around $180 an hour to mount bindings. I've purchased over a dozen skis and snowboards in my life. This is the first time I have ever paid to mount and adjust bindings on new skis. Granted, the people at REI are very pleasant and I doubt they wanted to secretly gouge me the extra money for labor. But, they need to reconsider their policies on labor and make very sure that customers know of additional charges up front prior to purchase. read more

I cannot say enough kind things about the ski maintenance/ski shop professionals. They were patient, smart, knowledgeable and helpful for me to help get me back in on the slopes! Dion was incredibly patient with me and Adrian helped out as well to make my new bindings a reality and get me back on the slopes. They were gracious, smart and kind and saved me from a binding mishap. Mind you this was all with two super crabby women behind me who was pissed off that they had to wait. Because you know there's nothing like the entitlement of a skier who can't get on the slopes faster. Thanks for being a class act staff at REI. You have my undying loyalty. read more

A closer REI that receives shipments earlier than the Cal Expo store. Sweet! This location throws me off a bit because of the layout. It seems a lot smaller than the Cal Expo store and offers less of certain items (not the case). However, it's REI. You know what to expect because you're there for a reason. You can find delicious chocolate at REI. That's right! And you thought it was just equipment and clothes. No sir/ma'am! You can shop online using their computers in the store. They also show real-time inventory and shows which store has what you need. The associates are knowledgeable about the items in the section they cover. read more

I'm very fond of REI. REI is on the more expensive end of recreational gear but then again their services are one of the best. Also most people should take the advantage of becoming an REI member. you get 10% back at the end of the year. I try to be as smart as possible so I always take into account I will get 10% back. I also overheard that if you have accumulated a dividend (your annual return), you can spend it on REI stuff or just wait and ask for cash. Anyways, onto what prompted me to review: Recently SIGG had a recall on BPA leaching bottles. So I went through the process of filling out the SIGG return form. Sigg insisted we send in the bottles and pay for the S/H with our own money to fix their BPA issue. Anyways. I called REI and they said, "did you buy these with our membership?" "yes, I'm a member" "perfect" my cashier just returned the item and put money back on to my card. I didn't have to go through the process of returning an item to SIGG which would have taken 2-3 weeks. Yes they are expensive. Yes most of the workers are white but that doesn't take away from their baseline service. Anyways I go to REI for: cycling, climbing, and paddling needs. Their tents and hiking gear are also very much in my future purchases. read more

Every visit here has always been friendly and very welcome. Needing new hiking shoes I went for a visit and Ray was there assisting other customers however acknowledged me and said she'd be with me in a few minutes. Ray was very informative and assisted me with finding various water resistant shoes. She offered to have me try more than just the one pair so that I could compare different styles and comfort levels. I ended up purchasing 2 different ones! Ray also let me know about gaiters as an option so that pebbles/rocks/water/mud wouldn't get into my shoes. Her time and energy is greatly appreciated!! read more

This review is not for REI in general, but for this specific location. I'll start off by saying my husband and I have been members of REI for almost 20 years. We've purchased a lot of items from them. We've bought quite a few things from this location, but the past two times we've been in the employees we've come in contact with have been, excuse my language, a-holes. We were just there today. We had our three kids with us (13, 11 and 3). They were not behaving rudely, we were there to buy hiking shoes for our 11 year old son who is going to science camp this week. No employee offered to help, but a male employee who works in the shoe area made sure to tell our son to "get off that, it's not a play structure" (in regards to the fake rock thing you use to test out hiking boots on). He wasn't playing on it, we were standing right next to him (so he wasn't an 'unattended child'), he was checking the thing out because he didn't know what it was for. We just turned around and left, and REI, you just lost yourself a sale. A couple months back, my husband had to buy bear spray for an upcoming hunting trip he was going on. The man unlocking the spray for us was treating us like idiots and it was just a really awkward experience. Yeah, we know this stuff is dangerous. No, we're not going to spray it on us like some people do thinking its "bear repellent". We will not be going back to this location. I'd rather go somewhere where the employees aren't so pretentious and self-righteous. read more

The associates are knowledgable...which is what I look for, when I'm looking to drop money on sporting goods. It doesn't even have to be sporting goods...because they are knowledgable on the different clothing products, as well. I'm a member for life! A one time membership fee of $20 will make you a lifer at REI, which is great. As a member you're privy to special sales and discounts before they are made available to the public. Called over the phone they said they have a lot of stuff for North Face all they have is four jackets drove from Rancho. on my lunch time for Four lousy jackets that they only carry certin size. I am a beginner bike rider and took in my '88 Schwinn Tempo after having some minor issues with the breaks and didn't know what was the issue at hand. Doug was able to help me out and align the breaks (free of charge) and also was able to find a couple more issues that needed to be adjusted on the bike. He was very informative and I gained some knowledge from him, Thanks Doug! RJ was very helpful as well. I had a flat tire on my way home from work (good to thing that REI happened be in the way, very convenient). He was very friendly and pumped my tires for me, once again, it was free of charge. I had a couple of accessories I had to get for my bike as well. He was very helpful and explained to me what the best quality for my budget. I bought a presta valve along with a front light and back light, as well as a new tube, and a attachable pump. I walked out once again with a bit more knowledge and a happy shopper. I would highly recommend asking for RJ or Doug if you ever plan on going to get anything adjusted on your bike or ever want to go purchase any accessories. read more

I came here to purchase parking passes. I spoke with a lady over the phone regarding the passes and she did double check for me that they do have it in stock. I came in today, was greeted immediately and was told I can purchase the parking passes at the front desk. It was an easy transaction with no pressure of rushing to fill out the forms and to pay. I'm a huge fan of REI. They have a wide selection of outdoor/camping/sports gear and their staff is very knowledgeable. I came here once to get a pair of Vibrams for a camping trip and the staff member spent a lot of time with me to make sure I understood the fit and that the one that I got was the right size for me.
