I've never had a bad experience at an REI, and this location was no different. But what stood out today was an associate named Kay in the shoe section. She wasn't helping me specifically, but we were there quite a while so I got to see her interact with a lot of customers and she was amazing! She had a customer who was older, hard of hearing, and English was their second language. She dealt so compassionately and patiently with them. She mirrored the terms they used to make sure they felt understood, and spoke slowly and carefully so they could hear and follow her. She managed a crowded shoe section with ease, keeping track of who arrived when, and giving everyone the attention she needed. She never acted rushed or stressed. The few people who helped me were friendly and helpful. Absolutely loved my member rewards recently where I got $550 back for what I had spent this last year, I was able to order so much more stuff I didn't have and could use for tent camping when we need to as we normally RV camp but aren't against tent camping and they had a wonderful selection of tents and all that goes with it and our yearly kickback reward paid for it all. I generally love REI, and I really hate to write a poor review, but my experience at this REI was probably the worst I've ever had. I'll preface this by saying the reason for the 2 stars is I was assisted by a very nice associate on the floor who was super friendly and helpful, otherwise it would definitely be 1 star. This is more about my checking out experience. I am hearing-impaired, and rely a lot on lip-reading to help me understand what people are saying, so obviously the pandemic has been difficult for me (and I'm sure for other hearing-impaired people) as far as trying to understand folks wearing masks. I feel bad because I have to ask them to speak up a lot, and it's frankly embarrassing. That being said, the cashier at the Tanasbourne REI the evening of April 1, 2022 was rude to me. Not only was she wearing a mask, it was behind plexiglass, so basically all I heard was muffled mumbling. I asked her to repeat herself multiple times, which I know is probably annoying, but it got to the point where she didn't even bother to repeat herself. She just handed me my purchase and the receipt and didn't even make eye contact. So really, I don't know if this should be directed to that particular employee, or to this REI or both - but please consider you may have customers who are hearing-impaired. As hard as it's been on me, I can only imagine how hard it's been on others who have even more profound hearing loss. I generally love REI because I love the outdoors and I love gear, but this experience was so embarrassing and stressful, I'll likely think twice before coming to REI again - it will definitely not be this one. read more

My partner and I both have road bikes that needed air in the tires. (Our pump busted) So we were debating about bringing them to REI or another bike shop. I assumed REI would cost a lot. We were helped by Andrew in the bike shop and wow! Not only did he fill our tires, but he took the time to put the bike on the mount, explain what our PSI should be at, how to gage it on a pump, and went over what a bike inspection would look like with them. Just because I'm chunky doesn't mean I don't shop here. I wish they would carry a few more sporty outdoorsy clothes for curvy women ( plus sized if you don't groc that), just sayin'. For that they lose a star. I mean, curvy women like the outdoors too! My daughter has outgrown stride rite shoes, which causes me tremendous misery, that was so freaking easy, but fortunately REI carries her Merrill's ( suede, slip ons, rubber soles, awesome shoes of all goodness) and this time she got purple! She also got another slip on shoe with fur inside and embroidery on top, which she swore she would wear. Well, it's been three weeks and it's all about the Merrill's so far, as usual. Her dad buys sport sandals here, and riding gear, etc. We've bought camping and hiking stuff here too. But this is where my all time favorite hat came from, ti's wool and bright colored. I love it. Props to the bicycle shop staff!! They went over and beyond to examine and fix my bike. I'm a travel nurse from out of town so getting my main mode of transportation running was essential. I know next to nothing about bikes. Yet Max and the rest took the time to walk me through what they were looking at and were up front about the pricing and wait times. I was ecstatic they were able to fix the problem that day rather than have me come back in the standard 72 hrs for tune ups and repairs. I thought the prices were fair and the process easy. The Hillsboro, Oregon staff went above and beyond to help me with a problem, and deserve accolades. I had spoken with them twice in May about a hitch bike rack before purchasing it, and they had misinformed me that it was compatible with a 1 1/4" hitch. To make up for this mistake on their part, they offered to replace it with a different (more expensive) rack at the same price. I went from being pretty upset with REI (I had done so much research before purchasing, including the conversation with the REI staff, and was feeling like I'd missed the window to get a rack because so few are available right now due to supply chain issues) to feeling well taken care of. Again, it was the managers at REI Hillsboro store who were so outstanding, and they deserve a lot of kudos for making things right. We have been very pleased with the professional service from REI. We have been loyal customers for over 1 year now. Two years ago my daughter bought her first pair of skis and ski boots from REI. Last year my wife bought new skis, boots and poles. We have been extremely pleased with how REI helped us with the fitting and selection of those items and the functional testing of those items. A special thanks goes out to Josh who helped my wife through the entire process last year. She has been extremely pleased with the equipment last ski season. Josh went out of his way to make sure my wife had the right skis and ski boots. She has had difficulty finding the right type of boot that fit her comfortably. We visited many stores and tried on a lot of equipment and happened to find the perfect fitment for her feet and calves at REI thanks to Josh. Just today, my daughter had her mountain bike fully serviced and again i have to thank Josh for his professional expertise. He made sure the rotors were true and also fixed the derailer. We had purchased a full suspension mountain bike for her and I wanted to make sure it had gone through a professional functional test. My kid loves her bike and I couldn't be more pleased. NEVER go here for a Bike Service. They will test your patience like no other. First, expect a 15-20min wait even when it's NOT busy. I dropped off my bike for a tune-up. Each time (at drop-off and pick-up) the person that checked me out acted like it was their first time using a register. Then I was told that they would tune-it up and clean it since it was dirty sitting outside. When I picked it up it was still filthy. I paid $75 for a bike I had to take home and clean for 20 minutes until my hands turned red. Where is the courtesy and customer service?? I will never ever go here again. NEVER. read more

I brought my bike in for a tune-up right when they opened at 10am. You would think that someone from the repair shop would be available. NOT. The gentleman who helped me had no knowledge of anything. He was like we are 3 days out but were closed on the 4th of July and don't do repairs on weekends. So your looking at July 12th. I told him that was more then 3 days out and he said "Well, that's when we can get it back to you." When I explained I lived in Portland and said, " I will be back on this side of town on July 11th and would like to pick it up then." He replied with "no, the technician told me the 12th." Straight up scamming in the bike shop! Dropped my specialized mountain bike off here for a tune up and was told it would be a week. Fast forward to 3 weeks later and multiple calls on my end, I finally get it back. The "bike techs" have no idea what they are doing and it's incredibly clear to determine that. My bike was returned in worse condition than before. Brakes were a joke, screws were literally falling off my bike, and all adjustments were off. I will never come back here and should have listened to friends who told me not to service my bike here. I was quoted at one price and when time came to pay, was given a higher quote. If you cherish your bike, please don't come here unless you want it falling apart on you and you have no problem giving away money. Learn to work on your own bike or take it to a local shop where people know what they are doing. $140 is what I paid for my bike to be incomplete and in worse condition. For any outdoor recreation, sport, or hobby type activities, REI is an ideal place to start. Don't even put them in the category with Big 5 & such because that would be a slap in the face. This particular site is pretty big and has two floors. There's definitely something for your needs. Yeah, for most Oregon residents, they're use to the whole no sales tax ordeal. For a guy who is from Cali, it's unbelievable and almost too good to be true. I was browsing the snowboard section when I found the Burton bindings that I wanted. It didn't take much to convince me. I saw the price which was cheaper than retail plus the no extra tax, I was sold. I couldn't be much happier walking out of there a satisfied customer. The people who work here are uber friendly and very informative. I had a few questions here and there and I felt like they weren't trying to sell me on non-sense. They were knowledgeable about the products. I told the first guy who approached me that I was itnerested in some snowboarding gear. He let me know that he was going to get the other sales person who knows more about the sport and the equipment. He didn't try to con me and pretend like he knew what he was talking about all in the name sake of commission. This was my first experience shopping at REI and I couldn't be any happier. Now I know that whenever I make it back to Oregon, I need stop by REI and see if they have any deals; must take advantage of the no sales tax! read more

My husband went into this store right before 6:00pm on 6/16. When he entered, it the doors were wide open and he was greeted by a very courteous employee. She offered to point him in the right direction. He said he was just looking around (already knew exactly what he wanted) and she told him if he needed any help to just ask. Just then the manager came up and said it was one minute to 6:00 and we close AT 6:00. He told her he didn't realize it was that late and he just wanted to grab a pair of hiking boots real quick. Her response: "Well we don't have time to fit you!" She then walked away from him. The employee who greeted him apologized and told him he could go ahead and grab them. All the other employees were pretty shocked by her treatment of my husband. At that point my husband was embarrassed and angry so he told her no thank you and left. I think of REI as more of the "box store" for hiking and mountaineering. The smaller stores in town tend to have better advice and more technical gear selection. Great location in a busy mall setting with adequate parking. Inventory seems robust as well. REI carries a little bit of everything, but mostly stands out in my mind for its camping, hiking, and backpacking supply. They do have a pretty impressive stock when it comes to ski and snowboard gear, too. But, if you're really into a niche sport, I'd go elsewhere. If you haven't yet, purchase the one-time, lifetime membership so you get a little money back on every purchase. Money comes back as a dividend you can put towards a future purchase. I used to live not to far from this grand store and it was always a great stop. I bought my GPS here because I'm a cartography junkie and will travel anywhere just for the purpose of exploring it. I came to this store because the GPS I was interested in buying was about $200 cheaper than anywhere else. Yes I was more than amazed and I picked it up asap thinking that maybe the store didn't realize that most stores were marking this item up. I've never had a single issue with anyone every bothering me here. No one has ever pressed a membership on me, I willingly joined. Normally I have no problems coming into REI, but on this particular occasion I was pretty disappointed. I stopped by because I was in the area and I'm in the market for some new cycling gloves. While this location touts that is has a cycling department, it's a pretty small one. I started off trying to check out the cycling gloves but there wasn't much selection. They have Giro and Pearl Izumi, but then not many varieties. Mostly it was just different colors of the exact same glove. Didn't find what I needed. Next I perused apparel. Kind of pricey and the clearance rack was pretty small. I ended up going over to check out clip in pedals and shoes. Realized I didn't know exactly what I was looking for, so I didn't linger too long. But during all this I never had one store personnel check in on me, ask me if there was something they could help me with. I managed to walk in and out without any sort of awareness of my presence.
