Have been an REI member since 2013 and have spent a LOT of money over the years. While the SAT location is my home store, I've also had the pleasure to shop Pittsburgh and the amazing Seattle shop-ALL equally fabulous! Love what they stand for, how they run their business, how employees are treated, and of course the high quality products they provide/selection always fresh! If you don't know their origin story/mission, do some research/learn about them-on point! In addition, REI.com is easy to navigate, well organized, and always delivers a great experience. The SAT store is inviting, clean, well stocked, has helpful/friendly employees, and don't ever recall a poor visit. Particularly pleased with how REI leadership has existed during the pandemic. Their approach is so responsible and thoughtful. Employees are masked-up, sanitizer readily available, safety protocols in place, and at one point weren't afraid to close-up in order to keep people safe. This place is your one-stop shopping store for any outdoor active life. Whatever your favorite sport (cycling, hiking, kayaking, camping, yoga, etc.) you can bet that REI will carry the right gear for it. Although our store here is huge, in and of itself, I've been to REIs in other states, like Colorado, and whoa, they're like superstores there. Either way, I'm always impressed by their staff, you can usually find someone that actually does your sport so you'll get firsthand advice on equipment that works. Yes, they are a bit pricey but hey, quality costs. At least you'll know that you're buying clothing and equipment that will last a long time. Always fun seeing what's new at the store. Please do not shop at this over priced store. The same items are half the cost at Academy. And REI signed me up for their "dividend membership" a couple of years ago when I spent $777.00 at their store. They now say that my $77.77 dividend expired because I have not shopped at their store in the last two years and they cannot reinstate it due to federal tax laws and their co-op status. None of this was explained to me when I paid them the $50 extra for membership status. So they are crooks also. If you want a commissioned sales person to show you 5 different ways to tie your shoe laces, then go to REI and pay $300 for a pair of boots. Otherwise, go to Academy and get the exact same boots for $150.00. read more

I wish I could remember the name of the young lady that helped me. She was great. I went to REI looking for a specific pair of hiking boots and I knew they had them in stock. The young lady grabbed them quickly, but also asked questions about what my intended use was. Using that information, she asked me to try on 2 other pair (one on sale). Just had the BEST customer service experience of my life here today. Seriously. It was my first time at REI and I will definitely be back soon. Found what I was looking for easily--as the store layout is genius. No giant signs or racks, you walk in the front door, take one look around, and you can clearly see every single department. Staff were all polite and friendly--but it was really my experience at check out that stood out the most. Shout out to Burk, my cashier, for being friendly, knowledgeable, and just all-around awesome. He introduced himself by name, welcomed me to REI, briefly explained the history of REI and membership benefits (which I totally signed up for) and addressed me *by name* as I was leaving. This was my first time in REI and I must say I was impressed. I went in looking for what I thought were the shoes for me. But man was I wrong. The REI employee took his time asking me questions about the type of shoe I was looking for and what I was going to use them for. I tried on about four pairs until I fell in love with my new Brooks. They are a very traditional type of shoe but for my training these will do the job. This store has won me over. They have all type of products from brooks, to north face and much more . REI never ceases to amaze me. They actually rent tents, and if you are an REI member, you can reserve tents in advance! Wish we knew, or we wouldn't be looking to buy for this july 4th weekend... As of the writing of this review, this location has only been open for three months. The employees are still a little green, but the store has a nice clean layout. Definitely a major departure from the old run-down REI's I've been to. San Antonians - this should be your one-stop shop for hiking, backpacking, and camping gear. My girlfriend and I just went in to browse for some outdoor items. This was our first time at this store. They have a good selection of a lot of outdoor gear. My complaint and bad review comes from the store employees being pushy. One store employee came up to us and told us about the membership and just about the store in general which is fine but he added some other information that we really didn't need to know. This kept us feeling like we had to listen to him but really just wanted to browse and we didn't want to be rude and walk away. The worst part about the experience was in the checkout. We only found one item we wanted to buy (store is a bit pricey in my opinion). During the transaction the employee really pushed for us to get the membership. He explained the membership (which we already knew from the first employee) and asked us if we wanted to become members, we politely said no. He then asked us, WHY NOT? This left us feeling a bit uncomfortable because we didn't want to be rude but we were honest and said we don't come here often enough to get one yet and maybe we would consider it in the future. After that he mentioned more perks of the membership and gave us an example of some lady getting a really good deal on used gear. We didn't know what to say after that and he just stared at us in an awkward silence hoping we would reconsider. We didn't. I've heard good things about the store and they do have cool items but after that experience we likely won't be coming back due to pushy sales employees and you can get the items in the store way cheaper online (I understand they donate to conservation efforts and that means higher prices). Maybe I would be ok with paying a premium if I wasn't being pushed into buying something that doesn't make sense for me. read more

Awesome store! Cool stuff, it's fun to browse and get advise from the super knowledgeable staff. I appreciate that the place it's always very clean, organized, and presentable. Also the staff are really sweet and willing to go the extra mile! (It's a great feeling being able to browse while if help is needed it's easy to find.) Even when the place is packed the customer service is phenomenal! Some of the stuff is kinda pricey (use the Amazon shopping app while there to price compare) but it's not ridiculous like some describe it to be. After living in San Antonio for 10 years I'm embarrassed to say I didn't even know this store existed...but Blake, Oscar and Lin gave me the most kind, genuine, understanding and patient customer service. They all spoke so passionately about the outdoor activities they love and gave me honest suggestions about what I needed to be able to expand my new-found love of hiking. I like REI and am happy to be a member. Visits are hit and miss when it comes to finding something to purchase. I do love my interactions with their staff - particularly in shoes. I've had help from very knowledgeable and carrying individuals. I also like that they stand by their products. I purchased a camping chair recently and didn't find out until the next weekend's camping trip that it was defective. I called when back from our trip and they said to just bring it in and they would exchange it, which they promptly did! read more

REI is like Target, no matter how hard you try, you always walk out with something you never knew you needed! I recently got into running and have come here for cold weather work out clothes and will be back when I need to buy some more. The staff were also very friendly and let me wear a wind breaker outside for a few minutes to 'test' it out. My favorite is the REI brand. The material is so soft and is light but warm, perfect for working out. REI also offers a membership club, $20 one time fee but the members get a lot of sales and they have member-only outdoor outings on occasion. read more

REI is definitely as good as it gets when it comes to chain-type outdoor stores. In fairness, they're not a "chain" store in the traditional sense - they have a co-op type deal going on if you're a member where you get a dividend and are privy to all kinds of awesome garage sales and frequent discounts. The prices on some of the merch can be a bit high, but paired with the frequent 20% off coupons and specials they're constantly giving out to members, you really can't beat the end game price. The employees especially give this place the feel of a small local outdoor retailer, recognizing me often and chatting with me. The classes they offer monthly are awesome and given by knowledgeable members of the staff who are excited to help people learn about the outdoors. The only gripe I have about this place is that some of the guys in the shoe department seem to be a bit less knowledgeable than I would like...I know I'm a total shoe fanatic and don't expect them to be experts on every aspect of every shoe, but when I brought my husband in to try some shoes on I couldn't help but notice the guy didn't really have a good grasp on what he was talking about. He seemed to just know the cliff notes of the shoes and that was it. Later I came in to try on some minimal shoes and had the same experience, and ended up not leaving with any shoes at all that day. This isn't really a huge deal, as there are many places in town such as iRun and Soler's for this kind of service, so I don't really fault them too much for it. Can't win 'em all! read more

I've been missing our REI in Alaska and was super thrilled to find one here! They carry the best outdoor and sporting equipment, and international brands too. We bought a hiking pack to carry a baby in in Germany and thought we would have to order the sun shield from there... But REI had one! They are always helpful, have equipment rentals, great promotions, and the staff tend to be extremely knowledgeable not only about the products but the sports and activities too. I've always found them to be a stellar company and it's so nice to see the SA branch living up to it. REI is a bit on the pricey side, but you can be sure that their equipment is high quality. I went in today looking for a lightweight rain jacket but not knowing what I really needed and Kyle came over to help me out. He was extremely knowledgeable on all of the brands and all of the materials in regard to waterproofing and breathability. He was able to quickly identify my needs and pull out a couple different jackets that were within my price range. He never tried to upsell me in fact found me something off the clearance rack that exactly met my needs. The whole time he was super friendly and made my experience stress-free and enjoyable.
