Love REI. I bought a jacket online and chose free shipping to store near me. Then the Coronavirus hit and the store was closed. I called 800 number and was assured that they would keep the jacket until they opened. They didn't. They sent it back!!!! I called online to complain and the guy that answered was fantastic!!!! No they did not have the jacket in my size but they had one a size smaller. I really wanted the jacket. I told him I would lose weight. When he gave me the price I was shocked! It was now less!!! I would never step foot in this store again. Spent thousands of dollars buying from them bought a very ill fitted on shoes. Took them back to return . an extremely rude customer service person told me I need to call return department. I was supposed to receive a letter about why I cannot return any items I buy. Letter was supposed to be sent October 2024. Never received such a thing. Why the heck would I buy anything from the store that does not allow return? Do they have a bunch of robot deciding about return status? I don't buy in return only when the shoes fit like crap! This is the worst I've ever been treated from any store, let alone stores that I have spent tons of money. What happened to REI? It used to be one of my favorite stores. I stopped by around 8:30 pm this evening (5/29/24) to return a few online purchases. I decided to stopped by shoe section to check out Hoka Bondi shoes. They have great reviews with comfortable cushion soles. One employee greeted me right away and didn't ignored me because they would closed in less than 30 minutes. He brought out Hoka Bondi 8 in both sizes 7.5 and 8 as I requested. But I noticed the sizes have "B" (7.5B and 8B), which to me that mean they are narrow not regular. I was doubting the size but try them on anyway. They did feel tight on both the arches and outer sides of my feet. The employee quickly pointed out the shoes design are narrower on both sides of the feet. He quickly suggested the Altra. I tried them on but they didn't feel much cushioning but I do like the toe box as they are very comfortable. But I am not keen on the color choice either. The next suggestion was New Balance. The sole has the most cushioning and comfortable. They are closing in less than 15 minutes. But he could tell I was not 100% sure because I mention size 7.5 fits better than size 8 but my toes felt crushing in a bit (shoes were too short). He suggested me to try another brand. But I knew they were closing so I asked for his name and if he is working over the weekend, and I would come back to see him, because he was AWESOME at what he does. His name is Cristian. We'd put our name on the list for a return, but there was an error and weren't called for about an hour and had to go back to the front. Slightly disappointing of course, but the gentleman that helped us made it all work it. Brandon (in returns) was so genuine, kind, and efficient. I'm a big fan of REI. I do all my sports gear shopping here or online. They always have a good inventory of things I need. I've purchased mountain bikes from them and also had them serviced here. The prices are good and the customer service is top-notch. I've always had a good experience here. I do a lot of online shopping so there are times that I have to come here and do returns. They make it a really quick painless experience. I always have confidence in buying anything from them knowing I can easily exchange or return. Caution though this place is a madhouse when REI is there special yearly sale. The parking is absolutely horrible and you will end up parking Way further than you would normally. It wasn't till Jan 4 I had a free morning. We looked over the selection at REI. The gloves were pricier than other places but I did have a member dividend I needed to use. Sadly when I tried to use it at the cashier it turned out the dividend expired Jan 3. Cashier said I could try asking customer service for an extension. After getting through the long customer service line I was informed they can't do anything at the store level. After a call to the customer service line I was informed they don't give extensions but the funds will be well spent. A trip to Costco resulted in gloves for half the price. Crisis averted Maggie didn't kick me out of the bedroom. Don't wait till the last minute or beyond like I did. My New Year's resolution is to take care of stuff as soon as possible. read more

My wife finally has the guts to go on Critical Mass with me this upcoming June 26th. But her bike's wheels were looking a little rusty so I brought it in to get an estimate for new wheels...I was scared cause last time it cost me $125 to replace my wheels...if which I was just gonna buy her a new bike if it was gonna cost that much again. So this nice bearded hippy looking employee(male) checks out the bike's wheels...my forehead sweats, my heart pounds, and my anxiety builds awaiting the estimate..."You're fine bro! I've seen a lot worse! You don't need anything, just wipe down the spokes with some lube and you'll be all set." Well, that was awesome! So why isn't this 5 Stars? Well, all their shit's expensive! I was in Boy Scouts for 7 years(but never one of those dorky Eagle Scouts) and we used $40 tents and $30 sleeping bags...it all worked just fine! I don't think you need to spend $200+ on a tent or $100+ on sleeping bag. If you're a casual camper, just go visit Big 5 and save yourself some $$$$$! read more

I needed my bindings to be placed on my new board and to get it waxed. Since I'm a member the wax was free. Hot wax is $16 with membership, however that takes two days so plan ahead! I asked to get my new burton boots to get heat molded, but the associate directed me to a better solutions that will prevent extensive strain on my feet! It gets busy at 5 pm causing longer wait times. I'd suggest scheduling services before then. Membership is so worth the discounts and the services that come with it! Noah (with the backwards hat in the returns department) treated us with such disrespect when we returned an item that had not been opened or used, and purchased days before. The refund wasn't a question, but Noah was just so completely rude in how he spoke to us, rolled his eyes, etc. It was bizarre. Maybe he was having a bad day, but we were confused at the disrespect since the item would be resold since it hasn't been opened. It was just as though he was inconvenienced with having to help a customer. The REI employees (all very young like Noah) seem to always treat people this way as though they feel they are above people. I came in with a suit on from work and yet he has a backwards hat at work. I love REI and we became members immediately. We used to come here a few years ago when camping was our thing back then, Not so much these days, but we still love this place. Become a lifetime member for $20 with great discounts for members only. Ever spend $1,400 here at once? We have, so the membership has already paid for itself, because without it, the total cost would have been well over $2,500. I've purchased my hiking shoes here as well as my Vibram fivefinger shoes. My husband was envious and ended up getting hiking shoes as well as the same exact Vibram fivefinger shoes in the same color (in size 13, of course). I've purchased my husband's North Face jacket here for $150 instead of $250 like I've seen online. I've purchased backpackets, first aid kits, wet suits, surf boards, etc. from here and their quality of their products are wonderful. The customer service here is great and everyone is helpful, I got measured for the right backpack for my torso, I got to try my shoes on without waiting forever for a salesperson to return with my shoes. ULTRALIGHT EXPERIENCE If you haven't heard of Snow Peak it is the best brand for ultralight backpacking. Titanium technology from Japan with portable stoves weighing in grams, cutlery weighing in 1 ounce, and mini cooking pots weighing in a few ounces. Snow Peak products are on the pricy end but weight and quality is key when looking into the ultralight experience. Snow Peak's Mini Solo Cook Set ($65) - weighing 5.5 ounces (0.343 pounds). Comes with a 3.5 cup pot, 1.25 cup drinking cup. The thing about Snow Peak, any of their drinking mugs are designed to serve as a pot and can be placed on-top of heat. One thing about titanium technology, it's so light. It it doesn't distribute heat as well as steel. When cooking meals, just remember that note. THE OUTDOOR GOAL Slowing getting into backpacking/hiking if that be just a day trip or (maybe an overnight). So why go to a brick and mortar and pay more if you're not just shopping fitment or brand? Well, one reason might be to support the autocratic adjacent pseudo professional advice enthusiastically offered by Biff who once watched his friend climb Half Dome. You might also fall for the absolute lie told to you by Front Door Dude (who is quite put together) about the dog policy at REI. The claim is that the Health Department doesn't allow dog because "REI sells food". Food that is hermetically sealed to survive the apocalypse. Nope. REI isn't big on supporting dog ownership even though they will sell you a travel bowl or backpack for that same Fido. It's just dumb that they lie to you. A friend and I came to REI to pick up a few items. Specifically I came to look at some shoes and shirts. This is a great store for all things outdoorsy... high quality merchandise and excellent customer service makes for a great combo! We have the REI-membership and have been return customers for a variety of things- hiking boots, camping gear etc and have always found extremely knowledgeable staff around to help advise us based on our needs. Though their stuff does tend to rub on the pricier side, they have an excellent return policy, if you are bitten with buyers remorse once you walk out of the store! Very sad and disappointed. I come to this REI a lot, as I love everything that they have in store for us. I always spend a good amount of money here(but it's okay because it's great supplies). I was excited to finally be able to buy a stand up paddle board for myself. Unfortunately, I came on a Thursday with my emotional support dog (she is ALWAYS with me)!! I was told I was not allowed in the store with my dog, I genuinely told the worker that she's my emotional support dog and right away he went to get his manager, Todd. He was rude and told me I was not allowed in the store with her. Honestly I was so shocked and hurt I had nothing to say to him. No one should ever have the audacity to not allow a customer in because they have an emotional support dog. Unfortunately, I have lost all my respect for this store and will buy all my camping/ summer supplies elsewhere. read more

This REI has so many friendly staff members! I was impressed with how helpful and kind everyone was. The store itself didn't seem to offer quite as many merchandise items as the store I usually frequent in TN, although maybe it was the layout. Or the crazy frenzied crowded atmosphere. It was slight chaos in this place, but then again I went on a weekend, so maybe that's not typical. The fitting rooms were available to use (I know some retailers are still closed because of the pandemic but these were open. And clean and tidy and managed with an attendant from the staff so that's always helpful!). I love being a part of the co op also, so if you find yourself shopping here definitely look into it if you aren't already a member! read more

This REI is one of our favorites in San Diego. We often come to this location to pick-up online orders, get our bikes inspected, buy holiday gifts, do returns, etc. Always an abundance of helpful and knowledgeable staff, stellar products and ample parking, it is no wonder that REI has become one of the most famous American retail stores for outdoor recreation services. On our most recent trip, we visited REI because we were having trouble putting the rear tire back on our bike to mount on the Diamond Back fluid trainer. Mike was at the cycling counter and immediately called a bike specialist, Esteban, to take a look for us. Esteban was super patient in diagnosing the issue, and within a few minutes, he was able to pinpoint that the springs in the skewers were flipped, causing the difficulty in placing the tire back in place. He also spent the time explaining the various gears, and walking us through areas we need to be aware of to maintain our bike's longevity. Big thanks to Mike and Esteban for their helpfulness and patience to go above and beyond in helping a customer. While they were helping us, they also managed to multi-task and ring up other customers. We always find useful sports equipment at REI, and though a bit pricey, the products last a long time. I look forward to attending a few of their free classes and continue to be a loyal member of their company. read more

As of yesterday I had only been to REI once several years ago and recalled it being very overpriced and overcrowded. My GF likes the place and this weekend convinced me to go there because they supposedly had a great dog section with all kinds of stuff for dogs. We put together a big shopping list of stuff we were going to buy including a bike trailer for dogs, a bunch of other dog stuff, and a bunch of stuff for us. All in all, over $1500 worth of stuff. We put our two 18 pound and very well trained dogs in the car and drove over. As soon as we walked through the door the attendant immediately stopped us and said something along the lines of "you can't bring your dogs in here". She then directed us to what she called a "pooch porch" outside and said we could leave the dogs there then come back inside. Well, this "pooch porch" was nothing more than a couple of hooks outside to attach your dogs' leashes to and leave them chained up outside, unsupervised, not separated from other dogs, no one watching to make sure they are safe. Yeah....no. I promptly left. An outdoor store in San Diego, a very dog-friendly city, that sells a lot of dog products but doesn't allow dogs in the store so you can check sizing, see how your dog reacts to some of the items, etc,..?? One of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. They are free to have whatever dog policies they want but I am also free to take my business to a place without such ridiculous policies. And based on some other reviews, they don't seem very happy about having to allow service dogs inside either. I am genuinely surprised that an outdoor company like REI is so anti-dog. read more

She went to the back and check the boxes and found one for me. This location has a good selection of everything compared to their other locations. The parking kinda lame though..... Tried to bring my dog in the store and they asked me to leave her outside although they let 5 other dogs inside. I asked why they were allowed to bring their dogs in and they said they were service dogs that had no harness no papers or anything. And she said they don't ask for those things. I then I asked her if I had said my dog was a service animal if she would've let her in and she shrugged her shoulders. It also states on their website that friendly pets are welcome on a leash. I called them, asked if they could perform a specific repair on my boots, and spoke to one of their techs on the phone. He said the repair would be no problem. Got a quote on pricing and turnaround time and drove 45 minutes out to have the repair done a few days later. They said they had no idea who I talked to but they can't handle the repair here. REI is simply a cut above. There's just a different vibe in the store and all of the staff have great energy. TODD in the bicycle service department was exceptional and the customer service he provided me prompted me to write a review. I brought a newly acquired road bike in for driveway adjustments and I was prepared to leave the bike for a week or two, knowing that bike service is in high demand. I explained my situation to Todd and he took care of it right there on the spot!!! I was in awe and he saved me so much time and money! He gave me tips on the adjustment as well as other maintenance items on my list. I learned that REI used to conduct bike repair and maintenance classes (prior to COVID). This location of REI is really great and nicely organized. The selection at this location is awesome and theres always something interesting I discover. I Stopped at this location to get a boot fitting at the ski department pretty close to their closing time. I was helped even without booking an appointment ahead of time. I was helped by an associate named Kristen and she was very kind and super helpful. She gave me great advice on what to look for in a proper ski boot and she found the perfect boot and size for my ski style and needs. I came here specifically to buy a Hydroflask. I finally caved in since I drink a lot of water during my hula rehearsals. This was the second place I went to for hydroflask, the first was the Container Store and they only had two color options. REI has more colors but they weren't exactly fully stocked for each size and color. I did end up buying a 32 oz Hunter Green Hydroflask $39.95, wasn't originally what I was looking for but I thought it was unique. The cashier was friendly. This review is regarding the employees of the store. Specifically the floor employees and the cashiers. With the exception of the shoe department most of them were too lazy to look for sizes for us. Maybe the store should consider having all the merchandise out because they are missing on sales because their employees don't want to look for sizes. We spent about 3 grand so we would have really benefited from someone helping us. Spent about 3-4 hours looking for items.
