The draw for ECA over big places like LA/24 hour was the smaller business vibe & I wanted to "shop local". I also liked the childcare options. 1. when we signed up at the Ballinger Village location with Brody, he made a big show of telling us (my husband and I) how they're a small business and they're not out to get money, he said most of them are just personal trainers or nutritionists, NOT BUSINESSMEN (i remember this line because he repeated it several times). So he encouraged me to sign up for the champions class. I asked specifically if I could cancel if it didn't fit my needs/baby schedule. He said "of course. But I'd recommend you try it for at least 60 days so you can really see if it works for you. And if you still need to cancel, just reach out. We're really chill here." This was near verbatim. 2. After more than a couple months, I found the champions class great for others but not for me/my toddler's schedule so I emailed to cancel which was the ONLY option I was given. And the email response was short, rude, and included a "$299 + tax downgrade fee" for the cancellation. Mind you, I wasn't trying to cancel our membership. Just MY champions access. I told them what Brody had told us just months prior and they absolutely didn't budge. That's fine. It's policy - I get it. But this is totally the kind of stuff big businesses pull and they should be up front. 3. We ended up completely cancelling our memberships (both of us) because we thought this way of business was shady and when you think about the cost and what they offer v. what big gyms offer (LA/24) then you'll realize it's absolutely not worth it. all that talk in the beginning is EXACTLY what it sounds like. a sales pitch. don't be sucked in. **I will say the teachers at the childcare are above and beyond. The sheer variety of isolation exercises possible here should excite any intermediate/advanced lifter! * incredible, well designed space surrounding the machines for free-weight activities, bars for deadlifts and old fashioned bench presses, enough high quality ROGUE benches to go around. * an upstairs area which provides additional machines, as well as empty space for stretching, personal stretching, etc. * limited selection of cardio machines that face outside This gym is very clearly targeted to serious fitness enthusiasts and is probably not a great place for the cardio-only half-asses lifting crowd. Spectating had a unique set-up for the northern division pools. One could stand on the pool and watch, but there was also a multi-level building with a balcony one could stand on as well as a bleacher area by a grassy lawn located up some stairs from the pool deck. The grassy area might not have been huge, but it was large enough to have some space to spread out during dual meets. During division-wide/league-wide meets (such as prelims, Northern Division, or All-City), the space was more cramped, but still large enough to get a small area. Concessions and ribbons were housed upstairs at the building, which was nice especially on dreary days. Restrooms were on the bottom level of the building and could be reached from stairs by the building or via the pool deck. The pool was on the cooler side and had slippery tiles. That was something our coaches emphasized for us to practice during warm-up - turns without slipping. Parking near the building was quick to go during meets, so getting to the pool tended to include a bit of a walk. Though, since that was the norm, it was easy to plan ahead.

As a physical therapist, strength and conditioning specialist, and lifetime athlete, my standards for exercise programs are very high, and GSF is the only place around that I've found that meets them. In fact, I found them during a period of time when I was sampling various different fitness facilities. They have programs for just about everybody, and can tailor programs to individuals based on sport, injury, age, disability, etc, which by itself is a rarity. What I'm most impressed about is the "programming," which is basically the scientific periodization behind how they continually create and evolve their workouts. I often ask about the intent behind workouts or specific exercises, and I'm always impressed by the depth of thought that goes into the purpose of each and every exercise, and how it changes continually. The staff are great, and unlike gyms or clubs whose primary purpose is to make as much profit as possibly by upselling training packages or other things, GSF is most interested in helping every individual improve themselves and reach their goals. First workout is free, and the for what you get, the prices are great!

The place is keep fairly clean and the equipment is kept in good working order. Not really anything to complain about honestly, it's like 30-35 bucks a month. So for the price it's a solid place, happy to have found this spot.
