Came here on a rainy night for some laughs. The location and parking lot is very sketchy and it helped that there was a parking attendant that night. There was an undeniable stench of marijuana throughout the place upon our entry and a puddle of water on the stairs leading to the basement. The bar is also located downstairs next to the room with the stage. There are a few tables scattered throughout but mostly stand alone chairs. There were about 8 comics total, ranging from funny to raunchy. Some I could relate to, some very hard to understand due to ghetto accents and slang. Overall not a bad show but we would have not ended up here if laughing skull hasn't sold out. Don't sit out front if you don't want to be picked on/made fun of. read more

We need to save this organization. now that their home building by Ga. Tech is kaput and not able to be saved, the theater - along with Automatic Improv and other troupes - needs a new space. I took a class here at Automatic Improv, and to say I felt immediately part of the family is an understatement. They are classy, funny, smart and entrepreneurial as somewhat of an upstart in Atlanta's improv field. During my graduation show I got to do a scene with Kevin where we were bouncers from New Jersey. Pretty cool little spot for a comedy show. It looks like a church from 14th street but the entry is in the back. Small little lot (free) but not a big seating area either. They have a small bar for you to get cocktails before, during and after the show. Restrooms on both floors. Not a lot of space for mingling though. Easy to find. Cute space. I visited this place on Saturday night when they had their Grow and Sexy Comedy Show. The place was packed and acts were great and funny. They were about 10 comedians that performed a 10mn act each. I like the format because it keeps it from being boring if you don't like one particular act. The pace is not fancy, they had rows of foldable chairs and that was it. There is a bar, and they have a great selection of imported and local beers. I'm not a beer drinker so I ordered a cocktail that was good. If you looking for a chilled place to hang don't hesitate to give this place a try. The cover was only $10/ person. read more

Relapse is a theater located in a converted church building, featuring mostly improv and stand-up comedy. The converted church is indistinguishable from an actual, real-live, operating church from the outside, and there are no visible signs to tell you otherwise, which makes it a pain to find at night. As it turns out, drinking alcohol in a place that used to be a church is entertaining for all. They used to sell drinks here, but now it's BYOB - and everybody does. I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually. They're primarily known for improv; in addition to shows, the theater holds performance workshops and has its own improv troupe, though my source prefers Dad's Garage. I've only attended the stand-up comedy open mic night. This takes place every Tuesday and Thursday, and it's a late show - is supposed to start at 10 but usually doesn't until 10:30 or so, and can run until almost 2! The comedy was so-so with a couple of great comics and a couple real bad ones. Apparently, you will start to see regulars, complete with repeat material, if you go to a whopping two open mic nights in Atlanta! It was a supportive, lively crowd, but the crowd appeared to consist entirely of comics and guests of comics. Because how else would you find the place, right? Until now - if you're bored and want to check out something a little different, I'd definitely recommend this former place of worship, now utterly stripped of its holiness. read more

First off, everyone was super nice here from the girl taking the money for the show to the bartender ( who should have-if not already been doing comedy as well). The Thursday show is $5, and although it states they start the show at 9:30 they were running a bit late. It seems pretty informal and people filtered in and out of the show as the night went on. Thursday night is open mic night, so you have some seasoned perfomers along with newbies. Some were really funny, some...were... not. It might be hard to find the first time, but if you like to laugh and you want to be apart of something new and exciting then this is the place to go in Atlanta. People say there is nothing to do in Atlanta. Well, Relapse is a great example of how that is JUST. NOT. TRUE. On Friday and Saturday evenings you can find lots of different crowds being hosted by several different gigs. Upstairs: long-form improv with some of the best acting I have seen. It is kinda hard to believe that people are making stuff up off the top of their head. In the the theatre space on the middle level: break dancing where people have mats fill the room and gather and dance for each other. In the Movie Theatre space on the middle level: live comedians tearing apart movies like Mystery Science Theatre from Comedy Central as well as an interesting multimedia improv sketch show where the screen has stuff on it to inspire the actors (It has moved upstairs now and is on Friday. It is called SIDESHOW). Downstairs on the stage: Burlesque performances, stand-up comedy, and short form improv take the stage. Simply amazing. I came here for a friend's SCAD Master of Arts thesis. The accomodations were great for presenting his art and then later for the rock concert of a few bands from SCAD. If you need a facility for a show, I would recommend it. It has ample parking, decent bathrooms, the acoustics are decent, and the theater area is a good size. The only problem I have about Relapse is I didn't see a sign out front. My friends and I drove separately and we all drove past the building and had to turn around. I found it accidently by parking in a lot to make a phone call to a friend for better directions and I happened to have parked across the street from it. What luck! read more

I can't wait to learn more about Relapse Theatre. Especially the SECRET SHOWS. I recently visited Relapse on a Wednesday night to watch my friend, Phoebe, perform with her improv goup. You enter through the back of (what appears to be) a church on 14th street, near the Jimmy Johns. (Sorry no longitude/latitude coordinates THIS TIME) Go in through the back door and be greeted. The greeter will ask you which show you are going to see, and tell you whether it is upstairs, or downstairs. Simple enough. 21+ gets you a wristband and brews! Apparently there are several improv -comedy groups nestled under the name "Relapse", and I bet you each of them are highly entertaining. If you visit the website, you will note that many of these shows are either $5 or $10, which is totally reasonable for your hole-in-the-wall theatre! As an audience member, I will advise you to bring your ideas. This is definitely a show for an interactive audience (in case you have never been to an improv show!). You should have seen me throwing around "Herman Cain!" and "Meth!" for fun skits to ensue hilarity. After the show you can meet with the actors and artists and learn a bit about them. This is one of my favorites, because we get to chat about the mishaps, and what was total comedic genius. They also encourage members of the audience to try out their skills on certain "rookie" nights. I definitely recommend marking Relapse Theatre on your calendar. I guarantee you'll have a nice laugh. read more

I had a terrific time here and recommend this spot with no reservations. If you are ever looking for something to do on a Tuesday night, the Red Pill Players do an Improv show called Reloaded or Diversity, I think. They were super funny and mixed in some stand up sets. The interior of the venue is pretty sweet- awesome quirky and fun night life ambience. Dark with nice art and colored lights. There is a bar and the bartender makes a delicious Long Island iced tea. I don't know what else to say, I had a great time. The tickets were only $5. I hope more people go to their show so they stay around a long time. It wasn't super full on the night I checked it out. Plenty of parking in the back. After the show was over the dj started playing music, and people started streaming in and hanging out at the bar, so maybe it turns into a night club/ dance club? A few friends and I came here on a Tuesday night for Automatic Improv. There was a full bar (and a very nice bartender), and the audience size was intimate. The show itself was good, the team had great energy and engaged the audience, and we all had a ton of fun. The show was interactive, and audience participation definitely added to the hilarity. Awesome place to catch an improv show! It is dirt cheap compared to other comedy clubs around the city (especially if you have a student ID) but their crew is just as good, if not better. My favorite time to come is Friday night around 10:30 when 2 Girls 3 Eyes performs. I have seen them multiple times over the past couple of years and they never disappoint. Relapse used to be BYOB but has been renovated to include a full bar, so sadly there will be no more brown bagging it here for me. read more

Mixed feelings. We went to see "An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein" (yes he's dead). The show itself was good. Long. Was almost 3 hours but felt like 3 days because it was so HOT inside. There was no A/C and only 2 overhead fans to cool an overcrowded 15x15 room packed with over 40 people in the middle of August! We had to practically beg for floor fans in our section. I don't think the hosts understood how GDMF hot it was. So, that made it hard to enjoy the show. But...it IS byob, which is a super plus. Maybe I'll be back. In January. A friend of mine performed on a recent Thurday for the Stand Up open mike. At first, I was skeptical, because let's face it, open mikes of any sort usually suck, unless the place has a rep. Also, the last time I came to Relapse was last year, for one of their Saturday midnight improv acts, and it really, REALLY sucked. After arriving, I bought a drink, so that I'd be medicated enough to endure anything that may suck, including my friend. But surprise, no one really sucked, and my friend was even funny. Who knows, maybe she has a future in this. I hung around to see about 7 acts go up, and they ranged from "not bad" to pretty freakin' hilarious. Thursday night amateur comedy night. Cheap shows for a bunch of chicks who want to laugh...they have classes if you want to be funny too but I am all about partying so I went for the jokes. It is definitely Improv so if you are into the fluidity of such a production, this place will make your night. You will be involved, so be prepared, but nothing could prepare you more than taking a few shots... Everyone needs something in his/her life that consistently and substantially makes him/her happy, and not just during time of exposure, but something that uplifts his/her mood for a couple of days thereafter, the kind of joy that puts a spring in your step and keeps you awake at night. Everyone needs a place to go where the people know him/her on a first name basis and where he/she is warmly greeted and given special treatment each and every time. I sincerely hope that you have a source of happiness as I have just described. For me, that source of happiness is improv comedy at the Relapse Theatre. Damn, the way I kiss their asses, you'd think that they paid me. But no, they're just that entertaining and that good to me, and I cannot emphasize that enough. They've exceeded all my expectations with regards to both comedy and hospitality. I've been to Relapse over a dozen times, and along the way, so many of the improv actors have gone out of their way to be exceptionally kind to me. Even the locally famous Deckerettes, three hot chicks that bartend, bend over backwards to welcome me, which is remarkable given that I'm sort of a square who doesn't drink AT ALL. Heck, I was even called "the best fan ever" and was invited to ride the Relapse Theatre float at last year's Little Five Points Halloween Parade! :) I don't get this fervent over much, and if this review update seems like a total love fest, that's because I simply cannot hide my effusive adulation. Further attestant of my love for Relapse, I'm responsible for inviting and bringing two dozen different friends to Relapse's Friday night lineup. They've made comments such as, "That was so much fun," and, "Thanks for broadening my (entertainment) horizons." If I ever host one of those UYEs, I just know that it'll be for the Friday night tandem of Automatic Improv and 2Girls3Eyes. Addendum: Everything in my previous review is still valid, and here are a few points that I should have mentioned had I not been so green at the time; Relapse was my 2nd review. Are you a student? Bam! You get discounted admission. Did you show up for the first show of the evening? Bam! You get to see every subsequent show of that night for FREE. Don't like paying for parking? Boom! Plentiful FREE parking behind the building and in the lot across the street. Don't like assigned seating? Boom! Even when I show up with absolutely no time to spare, I can usually still find a front row seat. Are you tired of being painfully, egregiously unfunny? Booyah! Ask about Relapse University comedy classes. Do you want the ladies of Relapse to tickle your funny bone? Is your funny bone in your pants? Boing! "The Girls of Relapse 2013" calendar is in pre-production. If I didn't already make this abundantly clear, I greatly admire what these folks do on stage. I've been attending approximately once per month for the past year, and I roll in there each and every time with the enthusiasm of an 8-year-old on Christmas morning. Can you feel how hard I'm nerding out for them? I prefer the short-form improv of Automatic Improv and 2Girls3Eyes because I like to yell outlandish suggestions and have them incorporated into the shows. That way, I get a sense of being part of the experience. Moreover, if I don't particularly enjoy a certain skit, that's okay because I know that it'll be over in 5 minutes. But if short-form improv isn't your cup of tea, Relapse features long-form improv, sketch comedy, comedy musicals, stand-up comedy, open-mic nights, etc. And don't worry if you get dragged on stage. Even if a volunteer isn't funny, the Relapse family is so skilled that they can make that volunteer SEEM funny. Straight magic right there. So get out, and support your local comedy actors! I'm am absolute whore for sarcastic, dry humor. I effing LOVED THIS PLACE! Thanks to Sidney E. and it's advertisement under the Events page, we ventured over to Midtown on Saturday night for the "place across from Jimmy John's." Once we found it, we parked out back, and scurried inside. We were greeted warmly by the door girl who let us know admission was "cash only". There's an ATM downstairs. She threatened to stab us if we returned without $20 and was gushing over my newest handbag. (It's a bright orange Prada Saffiano that I wish I could trade for lifetime entry to Relapse.) We were a few minutes late, and it didn't seem to matter, so we stopped by their bar for a shot of Jack and a Yuengling. ONLY $10.00! We walked through the door to a dark room with stage lights. The host was warming the crowd up. One of the employees graciously pulled a few extra chairs for us. We sat, and within 5 minutes, the giggles began to flow. I loved AUTOMATIC. They were sharp, fresh, and witty. Upon the end of their set, we were informed that we could grab food in the area, and come back for another group's Improv set! WOW...A 2 for 1, in Atlanta?! We basked in our freebie, and went across the street for Moe's BBQ. (This was really good. I had the ribs. My friend hated the BBQ sauce, because it's mustard-based.) We ventured back into the theater and grabbed our original seats for 2Girls3Eyes. I loved them just as much. I loved their awkward sexual humor. lol My friend became a small part of one of the acts and made the crowd laugh with an unexpected sexual joke. It was fun. The night rolled along it was 12:30. I'd had 2 shots of Jack, and we were told that there was yet another act! Considering we'd be there since 8, we decided to sneak out. (With the exception of the Hispanic Guy in 2Girls3Eyes who doubles as the lighting/tech manager for the group, I enjoyed every moment. He made lots of "off-color" remarks that were a little too far, even in this liberal setting. I found myself puzzled whenever he was part of a scene. My friend agreed. He just wasn't as good as his counterparts. Maybe he's new...Oh well.) This is a new weekend staple. A true gem in Atlanta! It's not stuffy, pretentious, or showy. It's the perfect anecdote for boredom, depression, or general frustration with the typical Atlanta scene. It was a well-ochestrated orgy for an inner humor whore. Only in Atlanta would Relapse still be a secret or be able to keep the 1 AM Secret Shows even remotely secretive. Obviously the comedy scene in Atlanta does not have quite the cult following it has in a place like New York, but it's not for lack of accomplished comics. You'd watch them on TV, and some of them you probably already have, so might as well get off your couch and go see them live. That said, I admit to a sense of giddiness when I went to Relapse last week precisely because most people don't seem to know about it. The building looks like a renovated church or possibly frat house with just a tiny sign in the yard. Then you walk downstairs into a dark basement, get a drink from a bar that, while well-stocked, was just built into the corner of a large hallway, and then suddenly you're watching a finalist from the last season of Last Comic Standing. It's not divey or gross, they have a lounge area with TVs set up outside the main room. The bathrooms are spotless and the whole downstairs is wired so that you don't miss the set while getting a drink or in the restroom. But despite the professional set up, the whole secretive affair still smacks of your dad's stories about seeing Robin Williams do stand up to a tiny crowd in a dive bar. I can't help but love that, even though I'm 90% sure my dad made that story up. read more

This was my first time at an Improv Theater and boy did we have fun. It gets kind of packed so its best to get their early to get good seats. We lucked out and got seats in the second row when we arrived. The actors were really funny and the participation from audience members wasnt as overbearing as I thought it would be. I went here last weekend for some improv comedy. Actors are great....basically a live version of Who's Line Is It Anyway? They aren't sure exactly how they will make you laugh..definitely random, but I am positive you will laugh and have a great time. They have a bar downstairs where you can grab some drinks. It is located inside the basement of a church but once you get in it has a professional setup with the stage. If you volunteer they give you free tickets for the next show and you can also get discounts on groupon or living social. Definitely worth it if you are looking for something different to do on the weekend. :) read more

Went recently with friends for the 8 PM i Improv show and we discovered for the $10 admission we could stay all night for all of their shows. In addition to the 8PM show they had another improv show at 10:30 as well as standup show at 10:30 followed by a 1AM standup show. While it wasn't the funniest improv or standup I've sen, it was pretty funny and the value can't be beat. There is also a bar with reasonably priced drinks for between sets. read more

Went here on a Friday night to Automatic Improv as part of a Bachelorette party! We didn't really know what to expect but we were NOT DISAPPOINTED! We drank and laughed until it hurt! They even used the bride to be in an scene about her life! Everyone was super friendly and the actors were super funny. We may have gotten lucky and just had good audience suggestions, but I feel that if these guys can make a car crash in Nazi Germany seem funny, then they can make anything funny!
