We have a chair from Relax the Back and one of the armrests on it broke. I took the rest of the armrest off of the chair and brought both parts down to the store on Wilshire in Santa Monica hoping that maybe I might be able to order some replacement parts or something. The man working there (I didn't catch his name, but his dog's name is Echo and he's wonderful) actually had the spare part I needed at his desk and fixed it in a minute or so while I pet his dog. I went in hoping that maybe I'd be able to fix this with a little bit of effort, left a couple of minutes later with it completely fixed, free of charge. read more

So this review is going to come from someone with a VERY unique perspective on this store. I bought an Ultimate High Back Executive Chair for several thousand dollars from them about 14 years ago. What you need to know is that this company stands by their products!!!!! I sit in this chair for a MINIMUM of 8-10 hours a day, so it definitely gets used.... a LOT. The chair has a lifetime warranty, and they have honored it every step of the way. They have replaced the base, and replaced the seat twice. By no means should that lead you to believe that the product is sub-par, not at all.... the quality of the parts used are top notch, I just use the crap out of the chair. The leather is top quality. I have to commend Daniel at the store for his responsiveness to my warranty claims. They have sent a team to my home to do the repairs here, because they value my time. The "Sales Consultant", Dan Doherty, was very helpful and honest about what would be helpful and what was unlikely to be helpful. I've gone to many stores for devices to help me live with my herniated disc and other spinal problems. His advice was tremendously useful to me and helped me heal when other stores merely tried to sell me things that wouldn't help and had no advice. Dan didn't try to oversell. I am glad that I found what I was looking for The store has one salesperson and he definitely prefers to deal with people who spend more money. As I was buying pillows that cost only a little over $200, I felt I was irrelevant throughout my entire time at the store. At one point, he questioned me about what I was doing at his store and spoke with me in a tone that I don't deserve to be there. This place is the best! I bought a fancy desk chair here a couple of years ago. Recently, I managed to break both of the arms. I brought in the broken arms, and within a few days they had them all fixed up and ready to go, and much to my surprise, there was no charge! I went in this store today in need of an office chair. The salesman would not budge one inch on this insanely high price desk chair of $4,700+. He wouldn't sell me the floor sample, despite there being a huge "floor sample sale" on the window. On top of this crazy expensive office chair, I was to spend an additional $250 in delivery and more to install it. we haven't even addressed tax, and this salesman is not willing to work with me AT ALL to make a sale! we're talking about a $5,550 chair and there's no negotiating. C'Mon people. Mind you, there were NO other customers in the store. I would never do business with this store ever. And he had his sweet, adorable dog tied up to a leash around its neck, tethered to a leg of a chair. You don't put a choking lease around a defenseless 9-pound dog. I remember going to Relax the Back stores as a kid, but it was just like any other store to me where I had to be there and wait for my parents. Of course I would sit on things, climb on things, etc. It was always a neutral-to-fun experience. Visiting the store as an adult is so different because I actually know why this store exists now! I've been to this location a couple of times now. The first time was about two years ago, and I had a pleasant experience. I tried a few chairs, looked around, and just asked questions so I could know what's available. I would have definitely recommended people to this store based on their product selection and the knowledge of the staff. The most recent time I visited this store was just about a week ago. I was walking around the area with a friend and decided to go into the store so we could look at the chairs (which we could be in the market for soon, but were just browsing at this point). I think there were two salespeople on staff at the time. One salesman asked us a preliminary question, like whether we were looking for something specific, to which we answered that we were just browsing. I think we each sat in three different chairs, but by the time my friend was sitting in the third chair, the same salesman came over and made a snide comment telling us to let him know when we want to set up delivery on all the stuff we're trying. When we tried to brush it off as uncomfortable humor, he followed up saying "well, we are a business you know." While I fully understand that the store is there to sell products, these aren't products that people decide to buy without some consideration process. The store wasn't busy, we weren't being disruptive and we weren't affecting any other customers, so I don't see what the problem was. My friend and I both live and work in Santa Monica and since stores can always use business from word-of-mouth, I would never have expected this kind of shopping experience here. One possibility I could think of is that both my friend and I look very young, so the salesperson may have thought we weren't able to afford furniture? I really have no idea, but even if that is the case, it's not really a good assumption to have anywhere on the west side since there are plenty of people who look young but still can afford to and do consume merchandise. Since it was my friend's first time in a Relax the Back store, this bad experience overrides my prior pleasant experience because of recency and because I feel like I suggested walking into a rude establishment which my friend left with a very negative impression. read more

While the sales-people were all that I could ask for (informative without being pushy) and the chair has been quite serviceable, I'm a bit disappointed that, after just 3 years, the left arm-rest is already wearing out. See photos for receipt (proof I'm a real customer) and evidence (what I mean by wearing out). . . . . and, no, I do not have razor blades embedded on/around my left elbow or forearm (I checked). I came in yesterday to get a seat cushion for my uncomfortable home work chair. I was looking for just a normal piece of foam, or your average seat cushion you could get on Amazon. Right away the guy with the white hair behind the counter - who so obviously could have cared less to help me - started to show me what ended up being the most expensive seat cushions - a wopping $150 for a seat cushion!? I asked if he had anything cheaper and he gave me some foam wedge that was $50. I took it home, it didn't work out. I returned it today, to the same apathetic sales clerk. Also, not once did I get "hello, hi, have a good day, thanks for your business, etc." - he made the sale and followed it up with dead silence. Rude. Awkward. Bad customer service. I ended up getting the most perfect chair cushion, for $40 same day shipping, FROM AMAZON. Also, if somebody needs a foam wedge for the car - you can get them for $18 on AMAZON. A foam wedge should never run you $50. Also, a couple of years ago I was having shoulder issues so I thought I'd come here for some "ergonomic" help. I bought a $1,000 chair - that I believe was "quite a steal" because it was the floor model. I also bought a keyboard tray that I had to install under my desk to lower my keyboard. That was a couple hundred dollars. And so then I'm out $1200 let's say. My shoulder problems get worse and I end up having to quit my job. Is it relax the back's fault? No. But it is 100% your fault for tricking customers into paying for outragesly priced office furniture all because you can slap "ergonomic" on it. It's not going to fix your pain. If you want something that is really going to help your pain - hit up EGOSCUE. Thanks to Egoscue I'm able to work full-time again no matter what the office set up. read more

Amazing customer service provided by Dan and Daniel. I was looking for a new bed with just the right amount of support for my back, and Dan gave me all the information I needed to make an informed choice. He also let me hangout on different mattresses and didn't pressure me to buy the most expensive one. Delivery was on time and very efficient. A week later, when I was finally putting the sheets on for the first time, I noticed that the mattress seemed too small. I measured it, and it didn't fit either King size or Cal King measurements. I got confused. Feeling a bit foolish, I called the store and spoke with Daniel, who is a different guy than Dan, the one who helped me select the bed. Daniel listened patiently while I told him that my bed was too small. He asked if I would mind measuring it for him while he stayed on the phone. He was super nice, even though the measurements I got didn't correspond with any size of bed in the universe. Sure, he could have been making faces while talking nicely to me, but as long as he was making fun of me at the store (and couldn't see him) that would be totally cool. He genuinely sounded like he wanted to figure this out so he would have a happy customer. He remained professional, and avoided accusing me of being just plain wrong or tape-measure challenged. He heard the distress in my voice. I was panicked. Over when I could order my bed frame. He offered to stop by after work tonight, and sure enough he got perfect measurements! I have no idea what I did wrong, but I'll always buy my beds from Relax the Back in Santa Monica. This place rocks! I love their Technogel pillows as well. Thank you, Daniel and Dan. I sat in a really comfortable chair he kind of mentioned the price when we asked then pointed to another one with a higher back. I want the office chair that can be adjusted in four different dimensions (I know, impossible on this plane of reality, but trust me, the chair can do it), except it starts at $1200! Fuck! I bought my desk chair here more than 15 years ago, and this year, one of the armrests broke. The model is obsolete, but Scott searched high and low and found two, not one, arm rests that he then GAVE to me, no charge! Amazing service and commitment. At least for a place to stop by and check out items... it wasn't too bad. Spoke with one of the guys in the store named Scott. They use a lot of lines like "get you in alignment" and many other things. Seems like they have a decent mix of things, most things look pretty expensive for what they are. While some of the stuff they have in here can help you prevent body pain issues, it's not going to magically fix you. The thing to remember when you're in a place like this, is that no piece of equipment/furniture is going to magically cure your back pain. Given that most people are sedentary, their bodies, including their trunk muscles all get week. Those that are active, tend to have imbalances in their strength and flexibility. The first time you get out and help your friend move, or bend down funny, you tweak your back. If you are going to buy something here, make sure you ask for a medical professional discount. There are certain professions that they give you a bit of discount for. read more

I work in front of a computer for the better part of the day and suffer from chronic neck pain. I decided to visit the Santa Monica store to try out the massage chairs as well as look at electric standing worktables and was so pleasantly surprised by my in-store experience. As someone who rarely goes into retail shops anymore (I buy most things online), I'd forgotten the value of informed, face-to-face customer service. Upon entering the store, Dan greeted me and asked me a several questions about my work and sleeping habits. I hadn't realized that being a tummy sleeper contributes to the my neck issues. In addition to showing me the standing desks and a wide array of ergonomic work chairs, Dan also had me try different types of pillows. Then I sat in one of their high-end massage chairs and quickly understood what all the fuss was about. Dan explained how these chairs start by scanning the body for pressure points and then calibrating the massage accordingly. I tried two chairs and spent about 30 minutes relaxing into a massage from my neck down to my fingertips and toes. It was amazing. With these chairs, you definitely get what you pay for. Dan is a really knowledgeable and patient guy and I appreciated his attentiveness and the mellow vibe of the store. I went into the store looking for a standing desk. What a wonderful store! Came in on a rainy sunday evening with my mum looking to buy a new pillow. It's been 7 months since my (double) herniated disc surgery and although I am doing well, the two deflated, ancient feather pillows I had been sleeping were a total joke- sorry excuses for pillows. I knew I had to stop being foolish and that to really take care of my back, I needed to invest in a solid pillow. Upon entering the store, we were greeted by Mike's friendly smile. When I told him I was looking for a pillow he made some suggestions, informed me about some of the different types/brands they had, and in general explained how important it was to have a pillow that allows for proper alignment! We chatted and even compared scars, as I learned we both had surgery on l4-l5. He mostly hung back while my mom and I tried out all the different pillows they had, but was still available to answer all of our questions. On my latest visit, the manager was sleeping on one of the beds he's supposed to be selling. How am I going to buy a bed from him if he's passed out on it? Over the past few weeks I've been experiencing neck pain when I was lying down to go to sleep. I have heard good things about memory foam pillows from others, so I thought I would test out a few and see if they might help. I had visited this Relax the Back about a year ago and bought a small lumbar support for flying. I liked the store and the person helping me so I decided to go back. I was greeted Daniel, who coincidentally helped me out last year, and I explained my new dilemma. He asked a few questions and brought over 4 different pillows for me to try out. Each pillow varied in firmness and shape. I appreciated that while testing each one out, I wasn't being sold on the most expensive option and Daniel seemed only concerned with which was the best fit for me. I ended up walking out with a new pillow and my neck pain has been subsiding more and more each night. I can only speak to my experiences shopping here and they have been nothing but positive. I called and reached Santa Monica store manager and told him I was upset and asked if he would give me a discount at the store for the inconvenience - needed a pillow for neck pain. I would like you to be very careful in your purchases there. Although customer care was good and polite, Scott is very nice, this is the story. My husband bought a Life Form chair for me. I have tested in the store. When it came, it was like another chair and I was immediately disappointed with the performance of the chair, more like a jail than a chair, very heavy, and I could not lowered enough for my height, so we decided to return it. To my surprise, they charged 200 of restocking fees. There are many other options in the Internet and in many stores without this incredible fee. I researched their website where they state their salespeople are trained in all things back related. Wonderful! I walk into the Santa Monica store and there are 2 sales associates; one who greets me another who ignores me. I tell the gentlemen what pains me and that I already have an office chair - what does he do- puts me in a $3k office chair and offers me installments to pay. Did I clearly say I didn't need an office chair? I need something to adjust my back and hips in the chair I already have. Well this clearly disappoints his hopes in getting a major sale. He then shows me this clearly wore out car seat which made zero difference on my back. I sat in it and he walked away, like he had something more important to do with ZERO customers in the store. Customer service at this store is outstanding! They would even order custom pieces for you! Amazing service all around! We were looking for just the right cushion to soften a hard leather seat in a new car. We have spent a lot of time on the internet and went to a few stores but did not find what we were looking for. We were in Santa Monica and stopped by the store. Holly was very thorough and helpful: she let us try all the cushions, explained the use of each one and made adjustments to some for an individual fit. The store had a wide variety of cushions to chose from and had one custom-made as a sample. We bought the custom one and could not be happier with it! It was for the bottom part of the seat. We still needed one more cushion on a back part of the seat. We returned to the store a week later to try to find a second cushion. Holly again did a great job helping. One cushion type looked very promising but needed to be customized at the factory. Daniel, the store manager, was instantly on the phone with the manufacturer to find out if the manufacturer would do it. Yes, and the store would have it in a week or a week and a half! We were warned that there are no returns on a custom order but we were sure that it was exactly what were were looking for. A few days later I called the store to ask when the cushion would be available for pick up. Holly had a day off and I talked to Sam. He called the manufacturer and had good news for us - the manufacturer already shipped it! Sam assured us that the store would call us as soon as the shipment arrives. I asked for a tracking number and Sam was very kind to call the manufacturer a second time to find it out for us - again, excellent customer service! The cushion arrived a few days later and Holly called us right away. The store had a custom made cushion for us in just 8 days. We picked up the cushion today and it was exactly what we were hoping for! I highly recommend this store: excellent customer service, great products and even custom orders! read more
