I really appreciated thorough explanation as my son tries out many different ergonomic chairs at the store. We previously tried inexpensive (depending on personal definitions) ergonomic chairs sold through Amazon, etc. We learned that these so called ergonomic chairs sold at Amazon and other equivalent stores aren't that great for us with backpain. You know those arrive in pieces in a box for customers to assemble, hopefully correctly and have all the pieces arrived to assemble. This Relax the Back store has many different ranges of ergonomic chairs for people in different sizes, back pain issues, and preferences. We liked the ergonomic chair my son picked after trying out many and listening to the store manager's detailed explanation. I just purchased a LifeForm 2390 Ultimate Executive High Back Office Chair. My old Back Saver chair died recently. After the funeral and the mourning period, it was on to the search for a high quality replacement. I did online research and found that the Back Saver company is gone and so LifeForm seems to be the only game in town now. I did a lot of research with the rep from LifeForm via email and phone calls but ultimately, you gotta sit in the chair to know for sure. So I went to the Relax The Back store. Kevin helped me with the purchase and he was able to show me the chairs and knew the product pretty well. There was another guy there who knew the things Kevin did not. There were multiple floor models and so I was able to really nail down the chair I wanted. That's important because LifeForm has A LOT of options. The store was clean and fresh and they had what I needed to make my decision. I only gave 4 stars because the store visit was not perfect. There were several broken chairs on the floor. They looked fine but their mechanisms had problems. Also, Kevin dropped the F-bomb on the phone, which is highly unprofessional. Otherwise, working with Relax The Back was as expected. Poor response from manager James when our electric recliner motor stopped. Left me a wrong call back number so I called the store where he answered with a lame excuse. Then referred me to the manufacturer who was much more pleasant and told me something that fixed it. But also said if that hadn't worked he would have referred me back to my local store for motor repair/replacement. James did not seem interested in helping and didn't indicate he might have resources for me. He was unpleasant to talk with. For those prices and poor service I will not shop there again. read more

I visited a Relax the Back store 30 years ago, on the advice of a physical therapist. I had surgery on my lower back and needed support for sitting in my car and working at a desk. I bought a couple of back support items and they were great. Fast forward and my young adult daughter is having some back issues (possibly due to a long work commute), and I made an appointment for her at this store. You don't have to make an appointment but I knew she'd want some personalized recommendations. James, the store manager, assisted us. He was very helpful--knowledgeable about the products, listening closely to the issues and needs, and patient. He worked with my daughter for over 40 minutes, helping identify what she needed. Once the products had been trialed, he customized the fit on the possible solutions and then went to the car with us so my daughter could test them and n her car. There was no pressure put on her to purchase something. She did, however, and is hopeful that she will be in much less pain as a result. While she was being helped, I tested some mattresses. I came in to this store to participate in the Elite Yelper event. I was the only person in the store and was greeted by James. He was very helpful and friendly as he let me try one of the very expensive massage chairs. I could not believe how incredible that chair felt compared to the massage chairs of years past. James told me about their mission (to relax the back, duh) and their many products within everyone's price range. He said they often have sales on their products, and one of the massage chairs is $1,000 off right now. They do pillow fittings and I believe he said they sell mattresses as well. If I had the money, I would be purchasing the top of the line massage chair, but until then I will be recommending their products to anyone with back or neck pain. read more

I went to Relax the Back at 1152 Locust Street in Walnut Creek, CA. As soon as I entered the door, I was greeted by James the Manager of the store. I told him that I had weird proportions, and I was looking to sit in some chairs to try them out. James quickly began to show me chairs. He explained the features, colors, and options available. He listened to neck and back pain issues. We swapped exercise stories. He was patient, he helped me adjust the chairs to my size. At no point did he try to sell me anything in particular. He was just looking to help me find what worked for me. James's expertise, knowledge, personality, and demeanor are all exceptional. I had tried 0 gravity chairs before, but I had never tried the ones at Relax the Back. I can make up my mind very quickly and am very particular. I expected a chair to be a clear standout winner, and regardless of price, that would be my chair. Not the case. There were at least four different models of chairs, each with unique features, that were outstanding. They made me realize immediately that I had waited much too long in investigating new chairs. There are new chairs out there that are infinitely adjustable and will fit people with long legs now. I had suffered years in an outdated chair without knowing any better. My advice for anyone with back pain near the Bay Area is to go to Relax the Back in Walnut Creek, talk to James, and try out their products! Don't do what everyone does - start by looking at the prices. Look at prices after you've compared chairs and narrowed the list down or the price will bias your evaluations and cloud your judgment of what will help you the most. If you spend the next few years sitting in a chair that didn't quite fit, or one that wasn't quite the best, the dollars you saved won't make you feel any better. (But the more expensive chair that fit better might have.) James let me sit in all the chairs and take as long as I wanted. I spent about two hours just sitting in chairs, each one long enough to get a real feel of what it would be like to own it. I narrowed the choices down, then had my family join me, and they sat in chairs and provided feedback. It was really tough to pick out a single chair because for the first time in my life, several fit me like a glove. For me, the "PC420 Manual Classic Perfect Chair Zero Gravity Recliner" was the one that I was looking for. The chair fits my long legs as if it was designed specifically for me. I don't need to recline it fully to zero gravity, 3/4's is the perfect setting. My back stopped hurting when I was in that position. I didn't move. I sat there and had all my conversations with James soaking in every second of pain free sitting in the chair. My Wife worked with James to find the right colors for the chair, and the sale was made. I look forward to it being delivered soon and being able to relax for years without pain. (And if I picked the wrong one, I have 30 days to return it as long as it's in the original condition and I pay for delivery.) While I was there, I also tried out the massage chairs. I'd tried them years ago, and like everything else, the technology has advanced to a state where you will not believe what they are capable of doing. You have to try it to believe it! If we had more space in the house, I would have gotten one of those too. I tried the inversion table, also a new experience. I noticed they had mattresses, pillows, and other assorted items designed to ergonomically make our lives have less pain. We visited last weekend on Saturday. Kevin spent a better part of an hour assisting us understand our options in zero gravity chairs. Once teaching us how to operate each selection we enjoyed trying all choices and all options on each chair He laid back, assisted others and returned his attention to us as needed. About 15 seconds at most after walking in I was greeted and helped. Wow! Of course this place is pretty expensive so they should keep up the customer service. I was looking for a better pillow to help with my sleeping and also ended up with a back support device for my car. For both I ended up trying a few items and bribing them back until I got something that worked. Each time someone helped me evaluate their options. For the pillow they brought out sample pillows and I laid on the bed. After picking the one that worked the best they gave me a loaner to take home. If you don't bring the loaner back you pay for it, which is fair enough. I went through three pillows before deciding on my pillow. For the back support they have a mocked up car seat which was nice, but ultimately unhelpful. Your own car seat, and more importantly where your head is in the car & your view are very important and you can't test it inside. I ended up trying two car seat supports. The first had a back and seat which raised me up too much and felt unsafe. The second was a back support only which has worked pretty well. As an aside, someone told me much much later you can do a ghetto back support by wrapping up a towel and placing it over the back of your seat. Overall, these types of things are expensive. I'd much rather try something out at no risk and be able to return it than buy something on-line. read more

Overpriced with not so good service. My significant other bought one of the hugely overpriced chairs that reclines. He didn't have it 6 months and the "leather " began peeling off. I work hard for my money but I made two wise investments in the last 10 years: One was a tempurpedic mattress and the other one was a Inada Massage Chair. Spent over 10k in the store in a 10 year life spam. Off course I use the store payment plan, because of the high costs. But no complains only gratitude. Now, I am up to a new challenge: Getting a High Executive Chair, because I need it bad. I sat and tested all chair possible, even gaming chairs. But no chair is close to the quality of the relax the back chairs. Many people invest their play money in guns, cars, eating out, traveling, jewelery..... I spoil myself with things that will benefit my health. Because I need it. I am a Retired Marine with a high disability, some days my back and neck pains are scrutiating, driving me crazy and taking my will to produce to my potential and knowledge. Today during my visit at the relax the store in Invine, I met store manager Frankie Hockaday. She is a nice human being, very professional and a true believer on the Relax The Back products. She greeted me in less than 5 seconds, and took her time to measure me and my sitting postures to the proper chair. She explained to me to the minimum details every option possible. A terrific place to shop for those of us with back or neck problems! I've bought many many things here. The staff is knowledgeable and the store has a terrific selection. I particularly like the pillows and bed wedges. It's a bit of a drive from my house to the store, but well worth it. They are the go-to place if you are dealing with an injury or medical issue and need some extra help to live comfortably. I have a friend who was distraught because the driver's seat on her new car was hurting her back and neck. I recommended that she go to Relax the Back. The salesman went out and evaluated her car seat and found pillows that now make her new car very comfortable. She's thrilled! My relationship with this Relax the Back store goes back more than a decade. I have just returned from purchasing my latest 'Perfect Chair' by Human Touch. This is my third 'Perfect Chair' and as someone with chronic back pain, I could spend time singing the praises of the chair and its effectiveness, but this review is about Relax the Back. The previous manager, Jerry, was the consummate businessman as he always was pleasant and helpful to deal with, and in particular when things go bad. Early versions of the 'Perfect Chair' were somewhat less than that somewhat gaudy name implied. There were design flaws (that have since been corrected) that caused me to seek repairs. Jerry's response was extraordinary as he provided a loaner and saw to it that the chair was made right. As I had come to depend heavily on the chair for relief from my back pain, Jerry's immediate and complete attention to the problem saved the day. I have purchased the odd task chair and other accessories over the years and the quality was always high and the cost reasonable. My salesman today was relatively new, and, to his credit, he did not try to snow me. I was one of those somewhat unique customers that knew far more about this product than practically anyone, so he spent his time expounding on the 'new' features of this upgraded version. In particular, the addition of a 'memory foam' option hit upon one of the very rare shortcomings (somewhat lean padding) of the earlier models. This chair may now very well be 'perfect'. I met the new owner today (his name escapes me) and he tells me Jerry still has a shift or two on the weekends. This new fellow seems cut from the same cloth, that is, customer oriented, friendly, knowledgeable; service and products that are the best available for those of us that suffer from painful backs. I was skeptical about these chairs going in some 10+ years ago, but found, more than a decade later, I literally cannot live (comfortably) without them. read more

Next, they have this "loaner program" They let you try the pillows in the store and if you find one you like you can take it home for a few days and try it at home with NO OBLIGATION to buy. That is such a great thing to offer people. I have been suffering with horrible neck and shoulder pain for months and this program let me try 2 different pillows before I found the one I love! My husband purchased a chair cushion for me for Christmas for my back and it was not the right fit for me. we don't live near Walnut Creek so we hadn't had a chance to return it and then Covid hit our house and that delayed us further. We were on day 32 of a 30 day return policy so I called and spoke to Kevin and he said we could bring it back. We drove to WC (70 mile roundtrip for us) and he wouldn't take it back. He accused us of using it because there was a cat hair on it. We have a cat, I took it out of the package and put it on the chair to try it, so yes I can see how a cat hair got on. I immediately put it back in after trying it bc I knew right away that I didn't like it. He then accuses us of taking the slipcover off which we did not do and why would we. All in all it was out of the package for maybe 15 minutes. I will never shop at this store again. I wasted my gas and time coming here which I wouldn't have done if Kevin hadn't told me he'd return it. This is why I called first. I was looking for a new pillow because my neck always hurt in the mornings. I went to a few other stores before going to "Relax the Back" store, but none of them had such a great service. I arrived at "Relax the Back" store after the store closed, but they still let me in and took their time to show me different pillows. I tried them and could borrow two to test them at home for a few days. The pillow I decided to buy was cheaper than in discount chain stores I looked before. I also got a free pillow case on top of that. A week later I got a postcard from the store thanking me for shopping at their store. This is the best customer service I've ever experienced! One of the wheels recently broke off so I called to ask about a warranty. I spoke with James - excellent customer service. We arranged a time that he would pop over to fix the wheel (I work right across the street from the shop, so it was perfect). Our agreed upon time slot didnt work out, but I learned from coworkers that he popped over and fixed it while i was at lunch. I called the shop to thank him and learned that it was his DAY OFF!
