The name is true especially because this is such a small store. The butcher will cut you what you need if it is not in the shelf as long as it is in the walk in. Staff are always friendly, efficient and helpful. The only real issue is finding a parking spot on Circuit Ave. If you have to circle to park, you might luck out and find a spot on Kennebunk Ave or in the tiny lot. read more

I have been to this place many many years ago like a decade, and i don't remember back then, but this time I was please to get their muffins; especially cranberry ones. It was soft and moist, well balanced. ( i never tried other flavors) and it seems NOT using palm oil !! . my husband had to try the rhubarb and strawberry pie because his favorite, the crust could be improved, but filling was good(he told me) reasonable price for the baked goods. it is convenience and island prices for sure. every visit I made this time , one of the girl at cashier at the back was grumpy, not pleasant! read more

from a first time visitor to the island and to Reliable Market, i have to commend the chef for the absolutely tasty seasoned chicken wings - store made! i can honestly say that i typically am disappointed when i do buy chicken wings in grocery stores in the wast as they're either not cooked all the wy through, or they were just not good. BUT not these wings! whoever seasoned your wings knows their way around the kitchen - the wings were seasoned just right, and most importantly cooked all the way through without losing the moisture. Imagine i had to come all the way to Oak Bluffs, MA to find store bought chicken wings that i thoroughly enjoyed smh. The best thing about Reliable Market is how convenient it is to downtown Oak Bluffs. The Reliable is your standard neighborhood market. You'll find the owners there most days with Mr. as the butcher in the meat department and Mrs. either overseeing the register line or cashing folks out. They're quite amicable and helpful. However, as someone else mentioned in their review, some of the staff fail to exude those same qualities at times. If you're in downtown Oak Bluffs and need to stock up on the essentials, the Reliable is a good choice. Their pricing is higher on some items and less on others when compared to the other markets but again, it's convenient! read more

Terrible customer service and prices inconsistent with the labels. Went in today for a couple of items. One item I picked up was a bagged candy clearly labeled at $1.39 on the bag by THEIR pricing gun. When I checked out, I caught that the item scanned in 40 cents higher at $1.79. I caught the gouged and inconsistent price once the checkout lady started the next customer. I advised her of the price difference, she looked at me annoyed, didn't say a word, and continued to scan the next customer. Absolutely atrocious customer service. She never apologized, offered the difference, nothing. Skip this store. I almost get the feeling based on my experience that it was possibly on purpose hoping most customers don't notice. That's can add up quick. In a world with ridiculous grocery prices, and even more ridiculous on this island, this is unacceptable. Pass on this store!!!!!!! read more

My family and I have been coming to the Island for over twenty years now and I love Reliable Market. Great selection and prices are reasonable. Over the years, I've tried to tolerate cashiers who are obviously not too happy about being at work. I get it. Today, however, was an entirely different story. The cashier today literally pissed me off but I didn't think it was even worth going into it with her nor did I have time to go find the manager because I was running late for a meeting. I went into Reliable to grab an Eileen Blake pie because I know today is their delivery day. I picked out a coffee cake instead and got in line. I glanced at the price tag (see the photo I uploaded) and was surprised to see coffee cake only cost $6.49. Thing was, the cashier rang me up for $16.99 and then balked when I told her the price tag says $6.49. Mind you she made absolutely no eye contact with me...not since I have gotten up there. She scrutinized the box - turning the coffee cake upside down and all around because she didn't care. I was already starting to feel annoyed. I asked her nicely to please be careful. At this point, she's huffing and puffing. She decides to look through the other boxes on the rack. She looks at a few boxes one at a time and tosses them back on the shelves of the rack after she sees each one is marked $6.49. She realized she has to give me back my money and so she did...scowl included (and still no eye contact). TALK ABOUT AN UNHAPPY PERSON. WOW. She was obviously cross about something or someone. Problem is, I was at the receiving end. I don't know if Reliable owners read this but I certainly hope that if you do, you will consider taking the time to discuss this behavior with the cashier who helped me. It just doesn't sound like a good idea to have someone up there representing the market in a rude manner. I did not get her name or notice if she was even wearing a name badge, but I hope her identification is somehow keyed numerically on the receipt (a photo of which) I've uploaded. I will continue to shop at Reliable but in the future, I will definitely take the time out to express my concerns to a manager on duty. read more

I needed a Rump Roast last week and Reliable was the ONLY market that was able to cut a nice roast for me. The Butcher was awesome. Everyone knows that Reliable is the best place to get meat. I think it's one of the only markets on the Vineyard that has a Butcher. Not sure but it reminds me of when I was a young girl and used to go to the butcher with my Mother. I am so lucky to get to walk to this grocery store nearly daily. It's been pretty much the same since I was a kid...old fashioned, family owned grocery store. COVID complicated it a bit with a single line for the registers, and like other businesses, a shortage of employees. Still, it's RELIABLE!!! read more

It's like if you travelled to a nickelodean show and wanted to experience what a grocery store would be like in the 70s. It has all of the amenities you need, especially the Portuguese bread, and the prices aren't bad at all. Would definitely recommend if you want to experience a hometown grocery store and need to get some groceries. read more

If you have the chance, go to Cronigs or Stop & Shop instead. Besides the people in the deli department, everyone at Reliable is rude. Half the isles are constantly blocked by people "restocking" (which should be done *before* opening the store). There is a male checkout person at the back. Especially avoid that guy. He throws your change and groceries at you, practically. He looks very unhappy to be there and gives deeply condescending looks to EVERY patron. Another checkout person is a woman with glasses who looks like she's ready to kill someone. The only checkout person you want to use is a sweet girl named Ashley. She's nice, but even she looks ticked off all the time/. You most likely won't find anything you're looking for there. They carry the typical convenient store fare. A lot of the shelved items have dust on them. The meats and fish are old. I'm always afraid to buy any meat item from them. The chicken looks gray and the cod looks brown and dry. But if you're into the Shurfine brand, you'll be in heaven. Oh, and I may want to add that they're only open until 6pm Mon-Sat. And they're only open until 1pm on Sundays. Talk about archaic!! Martha's Vineyard can do better than this place. read more

If you're looking for an overpriced deli/meat counter go somewhere else. This is a three generation family run operation. The owners are on site 24/7. Excellent custom cut and ground meats. Home made sausages. The place is a real throw back to another era when you actually talked to a grocery manager who had a stake in the operation. Sure the produce is not chi-chi. Reliable is a family owned business right on Circuit Ave. in downtown OB. Two very impersonal overpriced Stop 'N Shops and two branches of Cronigs are its only competition and they are all located in other towns. Reliable has a firm grip on the OB grocery scene. I had never shopped in here until I lived right around the corner for a while, and I really got to appreciate it, despite its flaws. Their hours are not great and the parking lot will trigger a migraine even if you have never had one in your life. Their vegetables, which are not local, are all packaged badly in those awful styrofoam trays with plastic wrap on top. Bad form. No one buys fish here so it looks pretty old. And the place is run down, quite frankly. If you are visiting from some upscale town with really glamorous gourmet food shops, you will be disappointed with Reliable. But you are on the Vineyard. Relax. Reliable's prices are usually better than any of the other markets (they do price comparisons in the paper) and they have good sales. They are also very convenient if you live in OB. So easy to stop in for some chips and dip or ice cream when the kids invade. It's a fun scene, too, if you are into that. This is a great family run little grocery in the sweet town of Oak Bluffs...a treasured destination for locals and an experience for folks not familiar with another era of family mom and pop stores... Best prices on the Island of Martha's Vineyard....and contrary to another review the goods are incredibly fresh as items fly off the shelves requiring continual restocking and butcher area is totally visible (unlike many modern groceries), efficient AND replenished throughout each day....its a local institution!! BEST place to shop on the island, I live here year round and know how overpriced ALL of the other markets are...Cronig's being the worst offender and Tony's Market being even higher priced for certain items. The Pachico family will do anything for you, warm and generous people. Mr. Pachico, in the deli, is one of the sweetest people on the planet. Excellent prices, great people. Win win! read more
