This is a very nice hotel. The rooms are clean, modern, and well set up. Beds are comfortable and TV has lots of channels an available as well. Even the hallways and elevators have a crisp, inviting, and modern look. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. I had the opportunity to both stay as a guest and to teach in one of the conference rooms. The conference area is also beautiful. I love the set up of the auditorium, it is perfect for presentations and was well set up prior to the class start. The hotel is in a great location with access to numerous restaurants and also has a Ruth's Chris on site as well as another, more casual restaurant near the lobby area. I highly recommend this hotel and would stay here again gladly. read more

What's supposed to be a nice hotel, it really didn't do it for me. First off, I got here, on a 80 degree day and the heat was on to 76 in the room. I put it to ac and wait. And wait. I am in hvac and actually here to look at the rooftop unit at this building. I opened up the cabinet and found the coil frozen. Called front desk, told them the issue. They send a tech up and I write this as I wait 2 hours later. They don't have another room. Booked solid. I'm about ready to leave. As others have said, very dark. My husband and I came here to celebrate my birthday, and my absolute favorite restaurant is Ruth's Chris. Since the one downtown closed this is the closest one that is by our house. We ended up spending the night at the Renaissance. I was absolutely shocked at the amount of ladybugs that was in our room. I'm not sure why they're in there, but it was definitely weird. We've observed the Renaissance North Shore in several alliterations, from a "new" Sheraton to its present version. The location is great and service is pleasant and fairly efficient. The rooms are nice sized, but the furniture is simply uncomfortable. First, everything is too low. Chairs are uncomfortable. The couch in our room low, hard and peculiarly designed. I booked a room block here for my daughter's recent bat mitzvah since we had a bunch of family/friends traveling in from out of town. While I never stepped foot in the hotel I found it super easy to organize everything with Becky. Becky helped me reserve a block of rooms for the weekend at a stellar price and even extended by a day for family members who wanted to fly in a day earlier. Becky helped me organize shuttles to and from the many events of the weekend. Majority were complimentary besides the ones where we needed multiple trips. I believe I spent about $300 total to shuttle everyone around the entire weekend, which was well worth it. They also gave out hotel gift bags (provided by me) to all guests for $2/bag and $5/bag if given to a specific name. The location was perfect for our needs and while our guests said the hotel itself was nothing fancy, they all seemed perfectly comfortable there. The North Shore has a shortage of nicer hotels in the area, but this is a great option if looking to stay in the area. read more

I was staying at this hotel for a company meeting 4-7 December. The venue was very good for the company meeting in terms of the facilities and services provided as well as the meals provided to our ~150 staff. The staff at the hotel, especially the front desk staff and the bar were exceptional, as well as the staff who supported our company meeting services and meals. The meals were of high quality for a large group. Also, the hotel has Ruth Chris Steakhouse at the hotel and you certainly can't get much better than walking from your hotel room directly into a Ruth Chris for dinner while never leaving the building and embracing a cold December evening in metro Chicago! THE CHALLENGES/PROBLEMS: What really gave this less than great ratings was the room and the maid services during my stay. During my stay, the maid NEVER cleaned my room, not one time even though I would greet here everyday. She never once came into my room to make the bed, or change the towels, or dump the garbage can or to replenish the coffee service. WHY? Also, the insulation around the windows and the metal window frames meant the area next to the window was freezing cold, even if the heater was on, so, you had to keep the shades drawn as a barrier to the cold radiating from the window and especially the metal framework around the window. Also, who ever designed the updated rooms with new furniture and the new Heater/AC unit did not do an exceptional job. The room is dark, . . . . .very dark, as the sun goes down, even with the lights on. Yes, the darkness is good when you want to sleep, but trying to have light when needed is a challenge. They built a new walled enclosure for the HVAC unit and the door popped open one evening and hit the desk unit. In the photos, you can it is impossible to open the maintenance door to the HVAC enclosure because it hits the desk? My room with the Also, the HVAC enclosure is HUGE and takes up precious space in the small room. So, I question who/why and how did this get reviewed and approved? The bathroom had blue painters tape on the ceiling which may be spots that needed touching up? Also, the shower pipe protruding from the wall was not secure and the plate that is supposed to fit against the wall could not because of how the shower piping was installed. One positive aspect of the bathroom, the shower had new Aveeno shampoo, conditioner and body wash to use. That was fabulous!! read more

Solid hotel. It is clear that it has been renovated recently, and some things still look a little patchy, but overall ambience is good, and my room was very clean. Staff was great! The staff from the front desk, from the bar and from the breakfast restaurant. Breakfast was great, with a great variety of fruits and great scrambled eggs and variety of breads. The Management needs to be changed at the hotel, actually, that's the only thing that is Renaissance about it. He is not the brightest cookie on the block. Which is why the hotel has only 3 stars on average. The rooms are old and dated. The main floor is not impressive, nor is the staff or service. I would refer you to the Marriott instead, as even their basic rooms are much more comfortable and their properties are much more desirable. The biggest issue is that they have a racist tendency, towards not being inclusive of EVERYONE. We need to NOT support this type of behavior, and in fact, have a moral duty to NOT support these types of businesses and behaviors. #Marriott should do a thorough investigation into upper Managements racist reactions and responses to customers, to the point of telling them, that he does not want them there. I was in the area for an important business meeting and this could have been a great, short and sweet stay. Could have. The check-in process was great, the front desk employees were very professional and the only reason why this review did not get one star only. My room was very dark with some tacky decor. Unfortunately, it was also not very clean. I found some hair in the bathroom and in my bedsheet as well as some crumbles all over the floor. I had a room which is probably also used as a suite and I could not sleep a wink the entire night because i could hear EVEYRTHING happening in the adjoining room, separated by a paper-thin door. On top of that, the AC was very loud. So, to sum it up: not only are the rooms badly insulated against external noise, they are also cleaned in a very superficial way. Food options are very limited to the lounge (for which you need access) and the bar in front of the reception desk. Their steakhouse only opens in the evening. read more

This is a smaller Renaissance hotel. Breakfast is very good, different items very day. Lobby is clean and bright. It seems very normal and lovely upon our arrival. However, like many yelpers suggested. This place has a lot of small flies, I am not sure why, maybe because there is a statehouse on site? Furthermore, my husband and I were both bitten by some bug overnight. And both nights! I glanced at the sheets real quick the first night, and did not see bugs, I did not check further. I have been to the Renaissance Chicago North Shore many times. The past experience is always great. The staff take a really good care of me. But this time, things feel a little odd. First - the club lounge smells really bad, like chemical scent. Second, the housing keeping lady came in the room when there is a do not disturb sign on it. Good thing is I'm still in the room. How can you enter hotel guest's room just because we are about to check out? It's 11 am, not 12 pm. We also requested a late check out at 4 pm. First time I feel disappointed. read more

This hotel is depressing. From the moment you see the tired exterior from afar, then walking into a lobby that lacks any form of welcoming warmth ... don't get your hopes up for a room that is delightful or energizing. The sleeping areas are dark, I mean think several shades of deep gray. From the walls to the furnishings (although the couch was dark green), I am a bit surprised Marriott corporate would test and approve such colors and furnishings. The decor over the bed was a combination of gold painted horns with blackish molding. Yuck. The old popcorn ceiling, ewww. The rest of the decor was cheap clutter - stuff you would find at your local Michael's craft store, perhaps worse. A weird checkerboard, odd chess pieces in a 3-D frame and some latin saying on a board; all amounted to needless clutter. The showers are cramped (although thankfully, no tubs), toilets are old, constantly run and waste water. Why these were not removed when they remodeled is questionable. The light switches are dark and not easy to locate, especially on the nightstands; I had no idea until the second day that the headboard had a light that illuminated the wall. One had to search for the hidden switch. The television needed to be properly programed so ABC is not on FOX and so on; the Netflix link did not work. Did I mention that it would often take four or five times to actually get the television to turn on? IMPORTANT: The hallway noise and constant door slamming is problematic. Signs should be posted for quiet hours at each of the elevators. Especially important when you have travel sports teams coming and going. THE FLOORS IN THE ROOMS NEED TO BE MOPPED after each stay. My socks were filthy, I mean just nasty after just a few hours. Now I know I sound like a grump, but so not the case. Overall, this place is great if you like really dark rooms, clutter, dirty floors and a tiny shower. I'm trying to put a positive spin, but just keeping it real. First of all, this place is a total disaster from both facility, amenities and customer service (more on this further down in my review). Second, their self-description as "the hotel is a sophisticated AAA Four-Diamond awarded hotel with impeccable service and luxurious accommodations" is a blatant lie and totally misleading. DO NOT stay here. As soon as you enter the revolving door into the lobby you feel like you stepped back a few decades with the yellow, red and blue colored glass. I came in at about 3pm (after I did the mobile check in) and they tell me that my room is not ready. Ok, it happens. I asked "is there another room" and the reply was "sorry, we are sold out for the weekend and all rooms are taken (blatant lie). I asked them how long will it be and they said "we will call housekeeping and let you know". So, I went to one of the couches and worked on my emails waiting for the room to open up (luggage and all; no offer to take my luggage in a holding room etc but I digress). A few minutes later, one of the receptionists came to me and said "my manager found a room for you (I thought they were sold out...) and you can go in now". I thought "fine, luck is on my side" (if I only knew better). They give me a room on the 3rd floor which is against what I have on my profile (high floor in order to avoid having a window staring at HVAC units and the ensuing noise that comes with them if I open up my window) but, again, it's not the end of the world so I did not even complain about that to the receptionist. The receptionist did not even bother asking me whether or not it's my first time here, show me where the elevators are (I was looking for 2-3 minutes as they have two towers), not informing me where the business center or gym is, etc. Terrible welcoming experience. I enter the room and immediately a nauseating smell hits me; it is a nasty soap smell that is so strong and so terrible that I feel like I am going f to vomit. I know that there is no way I am going to be able to stay there but I am thinking "if I crack the window open perhaps I can air it out". I go to the window and guess what am I staring at? Yes, HVAC units right below my window. I try to open the window and it has a metal stop that allows it to open up barely 1 or 2"!!! Terrible. I call the reception desk, I tell them there is no way I can stay in this room and they tell me they will send someone up. Indeed, a few minutes later, someone comes up and she agrees that it is unbearable and agrees that the housekeeping staff should not be using such strong smelling cleaning supplies. To her credit, she came with keys to the room next door (I thought they were sold out) and off we go. The same smell was present but only in the bathroom and way less than the other room so I figured, I am not going to spend any measurable time in the bathroom other than shower and wash up so I will take it. This room did not allow the window to open :( The room was very dated, popcorn ceiling at all, ancient and noisy A/C unit and no refrigerator. I unpacked and placed my personal items on the counter. Of course, every hotel supplies you with 2 glasses for water etc. I looked at the two glasses and notice the glass is not clear. I thought, perhaps, they are scratched. Well, upon n closer inspection, they were dirty! See the pictures I attached. Of course, now, I am beyond disappointed; I have stayed over 65 nights in different hotels in the last 18 months and this is the worst ever! I head downstairs to go to dinner, I take the two glasses with me to show the receptionist: I ask her "are you the manager"? She replies "well, for now I am"... anyway, I show her the glasses and asked "do you think this is acceptable?" Of course, she replied "no, this is terrible". I nod in agreement and she asked "whah room?" I gave her my room number thinking they will be replaced later. Not even "I am so sorry about this"...nothing! I come back several hours later and guess what...no replacement glasses in the room. I laughed and at this point I am not going to even complain. Fast forward to the morning. I turn the TV on, watching a car race and all of a sudden the signal goes out. I switch channels, every channel is out. Ok, time to shut it off and take a shower. I turn on the faucet and 30 seconds later the water is coming out cold. I wait another minute, still no hot water. I call the reception desk wondering what is going on. "Yes we know the hot water and TV are out so we are working on it". I could care less about the TV but the hot water is important as I want to get out of here. She said that it should be ready "soon". I asked what that meant and she reluctantly said "within an hour". Within the hour, the water was coming out lukewarm. So, the bottom line is: this place is a dump, I will never even consider staying here again, avoid it, it's a waste of your money. read more

My room - booked for five nights - was not cleaned or made up even after two requests? After the second request, they offered to give me sheets and towels to do it myself. Maybe they think it is an AirB&B. No quality here. No service at all. Don't make the same mistake I made. Marriott Bonvoy indeed! My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel this past weekend and was so disappointed! Our TV and streaming services that were provided with our room did not work the entire weekend. We were told time and time again that the technician was coming to fix it and that the tv's hadn't worked in weeks. We couldn't watch any streaming services and only about 5 good channels worked. We were forced to watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives the whole time smh. Unfortunately, our bed linen was dirty and covered in stains (yellow, brown, red, etc). We complained and got our sheets changed the first night and I swear the new set was just as dirty as the last. Who wants to sleep on dirty sheets at a hotel? Ew. With no entertainment provided and dirty sheets, this hotel only offered $30 off of our stay. No extra points, no coupons, no free breakfast or drink from the bar. We've stayed at this hotel for over 20 years and saw it through the transition from Sheraton (back in the day) to Renaissance. The early Renaissance days were fabulous and the hotel exemplified what any Bonvoy member or regular guest would expect of the brand: The signature Marriott "scent" wafted throughout the lobby, the Concierge room was bustling and well-stocked with goodies, the breakfast was fresh-cooked in a full-service kitchen and accompanied by a decadent buffet, hallways were clean, windows sparkled, in-room AC units provided refreshing relief from the Midwestern humidity, rooms smelled clean and fresh, etc. The usual! Unfortunately, all of this has changed. Our week-long August stay was anything but the "usual" Marriott experience. No more Marriott scent in the lobby. The guest rooms were clean, but dark (painted black during a recent "renovation"). The hallways leading to guest rooms were filthy. The AC in the South Tower elevators and hallways wasn't turned on until I complained about the stifling heat (it was in the high 80s and humid outside). The guest rooms smelled like mold and mildew (we had to move to several before getting a room sans odor). The full-service restaurant was gone and breakfast was diminished to little more than powdered scrambled eggs and refrigerated pastries. The hallway windows were smeared with filth and growing mildew due to disintegrating seals. The TVs lacked all of the financial channels (why?). And the elevators were rickety and noisy. As guests who stayed here multiple times each year pre-pandemic, we were shocked by the condition of the property. We talked to the front desk staff many times about these changes and they were kind, but mostly unhelpful. It soon became evident that the staff was well aware of the substandard circumstances but had no way to improve the guest experience. Very odd for a Marriott, we thought. When we arrived home, I did some quick research and learned that this property is no longer part of the Marriott family. They have the prettiest light fixtures through their lobby and such a pretty little hallway filled with frames. I totally love things like this. They do offer breakfast, however, not complimentary. Our stay was ok...location is good. Major complaint is the king sheets do not fit the bed! They come off the bed & it's a mess!

This is a nice hotel with nice rooms and comfortable beds. It is also very close to the people we were in town to see. While we were there, there were several issues with our keys and we had to have our key remade every day. The virtual keys never worked. Housekeeping did not come every day. You need to request it if you want it. The biggest issue with that was, there was no coffee in the morning. The restaurant is closed and there is no pot of coffee in the lobby. There is a one-cup coffee maker in the room, but the coffee was not replenished because the maid was not coming. There is a fancy steakhouse adjacent to the hotel, but it is not a breakfast spot. On our final morning, there was no hot water. We took a very cool shower. On the plus side, the people at the front desk and other staff we encountered were very nice. read more

The room was amazing, friendly staff, nice clean bathroom. Wouldn't really recommend the food it's overpriced for what you get and it doesn't taste the greatest. Other than that i would definitely stay here again it's not too expensive to stay here ether. read more

Although I only stayed one night, one night was enough. Renaissance Dallas back home is premier so I figured this one would be too. Not quite. The staff at the front were exceptional! I so enjoyed engaging with them. But the room was mediocre at best. When I pulled the sheets back, there were long blonde hairs in the middle. I immediately removed them and put on the sheets I brought on the bed instead. For this price point, I shouldn't have had to change anything. I paid almost $200 and I had to change the sheets. Yikes. Breakfast was $20 and it was mediocre and should have been included in the cost of stay. One of the nightstands was filthy. I was and still am stunned. read more

We are long time Marriott fans and Rewards members. For our 42nd wedding anniversary staycation, we chose to use our points to stay at a Renaissance due to our fabulous experience at the property in Makati City, Philippines for our 25th. My first impression upon entering the hotel was that the decor style is still in 1980's bling, including the bright purple throne chairs, silver & gold loud "touches" and warn (even threadbare) accent pillows , carpets and upholstery. The young man handling check-ins of individuals and large groups manned the front desk all by himself (5:00 pm when we arrived), and was still at it by himself when we returned after dinner around 10:30 pm. I am posting photos of our room's entrance that has no full closet, but instead an opening in the wall with a low shelf and hanging pole. When you walk in, you immediately see the ironing board leaning against the wall, and the foldable luggage rack. The pole is so low that our slacks when hung end up folding at the bottoms. There is only a computer chair at the desk, and no comfy sitting chair for reading. Thus, to read or watch TV, one must sit in the bed. Having read reviews dated "over 3 years ago," I see that the duvet cover of our current room is the same design as those older photos! Truly this place needs major updating. This particular property is in no way a 4-diamond. read more

Over Christmas vacation our family of 6 was looking to get out of the house. We looked up the cost of going to an indoor pool and realized a hotel stay would be of similar cost. We booked this hotel on Priceline and got a great deal. The only issue was the hotel is "pet friendly" but has a $75 charge that we were unaware of when booking. We spoke to the manager who was absolutely amazing and helped us work out a solution. It's actually a great hotel for dog owners with a side door for easy outdoor access and grass space. The rooms were very nicely updated, clean, with very soft bedding. We hit the breakfast buffet in the morning and found the service and cleanliness wonderful . I accidentally dropped a piece of melon and it was cleaned up from floor within a matter of seconds. Buffet included eggs, bacon, ham, burritos, hash browns, oatmeal, waffles, French toast, yogurt, muffins. I generally prefer things from menu but the buffet is great for kids or people who like to try a little if this and that. The pool here is on the smaller side but plenty big for kids to jump around. There's also a ping pong table in pool area and plenty of clean towels. One complaint is the closest bathroom is a good walk away and kids always have to go to the bathroom 5 minutes after being in a pool. All in all, this is a great hotel and management, we'll be back! read more

The staff were phenomenal, very friendly and worked quickly to get a large number of guests, who presumably were there for the wedding, checked in. That unfortunately is where the positive experience ended. We checked in, got to our room and it was very disappointing. For one, there was a stench that persisted everywhere but the lobby. The halls and rooms were very gloomy, really tying into that renaissance vibe. Our first room had a used Flosser on the floor, a half used roll of toilet paper in the bathroom, and hair in the sheets, on the dresser, and in the bathroom. This was unacceptable for the price I paid to stay here. So I got a new room, was promised a clean room. We moved all of our luggage to our new room, and the stench was still there. The bathroom was again dirty, with hair and toilet paper wads on the bathroom counter. The main room was just as bad, with a used nicotine pouch lying directly in the middle of the room. For the price I paid and having already been in two separate rooms, I decided to just leave, I asked for a refund and promptly left. The front desk staff were amazing, but the rooms were far from acceptable even. Don't bother booking a stay here. read more

I do not recommend this hotel at all. The hotel itself is fine and clean and has been updated recently. The reason I would never stay here again or recommend this hotel is because the customer service is absolutely terrible. I had my wedding room block there for my wedding and our experience was horrific. To start when my now husband arrived at the hotel to check in to our wedding suite, the front desk told him that we had cancelled our reservation (we did not), then they told him they could not find the reservation, only to find out they had given our room to the wrong people. He spent TWO hours at 9pm at night trying to get into our hotel room. Then the groomsmen used our room to get ready in prior to the ceremony. We had asked the front desk two different times to clean the room so that my husband and I could spend our wedding night in a nice clean room. The room was not cleaned and was worst than when the boys left it. There were around 40-50 dead flies on the bedside table. Next my friend who needed an ADA room, who had called multiple times to make sure he had an ADA room, was not placed in an ADA room. He is wheelchair bound and makes getting around extremely difficult and because he was not given the correct room, could not shower during his stay. To top it all off, all of our billing was screwed up. My in laws were charged for the wrong rooms, my best man was charged for my supposed to be comped room, and my friend who needed the ADA was charged even though it was not the correct room. When I reached out to my sales manager Rebecca Nelson, she was extremely unhelpful and not understanding on how frustrating this situation has been and only offered to comp one room night and gave me $20 in Marriot bonus points. When I told her that I felt this was unacceptable she did not care. Sorry I will not be using the bonus points because $20 was not worth what we went through. Terrible customer service especially from someone that works within the hospitality industry. Do not go here as your stay will not be enjoyable. read more

Unfortunately my time in Chicago was cut short. But the little time I spent at this hotel was absolutely lovely. The staff was friendly, prompt, and accommodating. When our we first arrived, our sheets were dirty. When we called to let then know, they offered to clean the whole room or for a new room. But we said a change of sheets would be fine. We left for a little and came back to a fruit basket, cheese, and crackers and apology note for the inconvenience. We had wine but no opener so we downstairs and they opened the bottle for us and gave us wine glasses. Their shuttle service to the wedding was also great. I'm used to most shuttles leaving the time they said they'd come. But the driver asked if everyone was there and waited until we knew everyone who needed a ride was in the bus. He also didn't argue about staying a little later than expected. A great hotel experience! read more

Stayed 8/11-8/12....Friday checked in. Super packed by the bar area. Saturday evening could not sleep due to dj or party playing music. The bass was shaking inside the room. Ended up just leaving around 11:45 because we couldn't sleep. Stayed on second floor and the ice machine did not work and the carpet in the hallway was soaked. Two days and it hadn't been addressed. Seems like a party hotel.... read more

I like how they are still fancy, but you don't have to pay much for hospitality. I like how you can lay out and sunbathe at the pool. And there's drinks and snacks you can buy. Staff was very friendly. The only thing I was unhappy with was that I only got two cups of complimentary coffee and I could only use my phone for WiFi it wouldn't work on my laptop. Room service also didn't bother to come but I was ok for a few days and didn't really need anything. But for $109 a night (what I paid) I'll give it 4 stars. read more

3.5 I was headed to Evanston-Chicago for a football game and needed a hotel in close proximity to several venues I'd be attending. The Renaissance filled that bill beautifully. Busy, busy hotel on a football weekend (Northwestern's Homecoming game). Even amidst the hustle and bustle of a crowded lobby we received a cordial welcome. We found our room on the 6th floor to be clean, neat, and comfortable. Standard meh décor, mini fridge, poor selection of TV channels with SD reception, etc. Just OK (but we weren't here just to watch tv). Two Queen-size beds each had four small, soft and puffy pillows (good for me). Each bed also had one large overstuffed comforter that was a bit uncomfortable, to wit: very, very warm to the point we had to turn the air temperature down a bit more than normal. The unit cooled the room on and off with a very loud fan and coming system, leading to a rather unsettled night. When I booked through Hotels.com, I purchased a full breakfast to be included in the room fee. Excellent breakfast BUT while my ticket said "tax and gratuity included", the waiter brought a bill to the table, crossed off the cost with a pen, then said that "the cost was covered but not the gratuity." Who screwed this up? Or was this the act of an underpaid or greedy server? I did not appreciate the virtual "indoor panhandling." That was the only "down of the stay. Clean, comfortable room. Another plus, there were two good restaurants - Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and Pancetta Regional Kitchen & Bar. The latter was excellent and very reasonably priced. We had an interesting first encounter with the front desk staff. The young man working was not trained well and was unprepared to be working the job. He made a few mistakes during the easy process of checking us in. We had reservations and it still was very difficult. Once we got to the room it was clean but nothing great. They have a great gym with free weights also they have a hot tub (which is very small) and an indoor pool which has a ping pong table in the pool area. There is a Ruth Chris and another nice restaurant inside of the hotel but the overall the place is still just a 3 Star. read more
