The man who owns/runs this shop is incredibly rude. In addition, he damaged two items brought to him for repair. They literally came out of his shop in worse condition than when brought in. This might be a good place to go if you want to buy stuff from a cranky, rude person who doesn't give a crap about customers, but I will never do business here again. Like Stacey E., I took jewelry I already owned here for repairs. Unlike Stacey, I was very pleased with the worksmanship done by the jeweler. I took in two bracelets that had broken: one of silver and one of platinum. Both were handcrafted artists pieces and included very difficult designs in their links to replicate. (The delicate, complex, nature of these pieces is in part why both broke in the first place.) Renaissance did a perfect job of repairing both bracelets, and at a fair price. Another jeweler had refused to work on one of the bracelets fearing he would only make it worse and advised me instead to contact the artist who made it and have her fix it. Renaissance stepped up to plate instead and made it work. They also do carry an interesting selection of original works here. I will certainly come here again if I need their expertise in repairs. read more

I handed a watch in for Repair on January 15th or so. It is now near the end of July and I have never gotten the watch back. The owner said it was "sent to the repair shop in New York". Every month I would check, and the watch was never ready. Eventually, I asked him for the NY watch repair shop's contact information. His whole demeanor changed. He became really, really angry. That made me mad and unfortunately yelled at him. However he never apologized once and he and his partner turned very nasty. I would rate this business as poor, dishonest, shoddy and nasty. My wife and I had a terrible experience at Renaissance Jewelers. I traveled to India and bought quality emerald and amethyst stones to be set for rings. We requested the stones to be set on gold rings. So we had 2 orders, one emerald ring and one amethyst ring for setting. Rob the owner helped us. We chose them because we wanted to support a local business in Gainesville. There were several flaws with this jewelry business. We find out after we paid that Rob sends out work to be done in Ocala, they don't actually do any work at this jewelry store. How we found out was Rob called and said his employee accidentally chipped the amethyst stones and he had the emerald ring finished and ready to be picked up. Rob was very nonchalant and said he can easily find a similar amethyst stone in Ocala. We were furious because we traveled to India for the precious stones and hand picked it out. We asked for the chipped stone back and he said his employee will bring it back next week. There were so many excuses and issues with this guy. Rob did not apologize, he was rude and insisted that his employee made the mistake and that it isn't his fault. We think he handled this very unprofessionally and was not sympathetic. We went to the store to pick up our finished emerald stone ring and Rob actually had written down the wrong ring size! He then had to send off the rings again to Ocala to get it resized. He called and I went to pick up ring one week later. And it was one size too small! Rob blamed me and asked if I had eaten anything salty. He cussed and measured my ring size, I felt uncomfortable and then he slams the door to go out back to phone his Ocala employee. He called the following week and said the emerald ring is finished, we went to pick it up and it was finally done after 2 months. A month later the gem falls out of the ring and it is lost forever. So warning for all, the owner Rob does not do any resizing or know how to attach precious gems into rings without screwing it up. He sends off work to be done in Ocala. He is also very rude, we think he has some underlying personal issues; his hands were shaky measuring my ring size. It was truly the worst experience in my life. His daughter was very nice and apologized for his irrational behavior. read more

I am BLOWN AWAY by the BLATANT UNPROFESSIONALISM, and COMPLETE LACK OF KNOWLEDGE of this place. My daughter went in to this place, excited about a 19th-century era pair of Lorgnette opera glasses she had recently acquired, and was simply seeking information regarding the inlaid stones, the gold content, and had some general questions regarding this beautiful pair of antique lorgnettes. She is a kind, soft-spoken, and non-invasive kid, with an appreciation for antiquities, fine jewelry, precious stones, and fashion history. She's is a college fashion major, with future plans to attend one of the finest fashion schools in the world- Parson's in NYC. What she met behind the counter - just absolutely sickened me. Upon asking her basic questions regarding the stones, and the metal composition of these opera glasses, she was abruptly cut off, with the most outrageous responses I've ever heard of someone who professes to be a 'Jeweler' or even a PROFESSIONAL for that matter. He proceeded to tell her they were 'costume jewelry' and NOT antique, and 'certainly made within the last ten years'. He went on to rant that they were 'not gold' and that they were marked 925 sterling. He further added as he continued being a total jackass, that she 'wasn't going to get rich off of them'- which really blew her away- as she wasn't even trying to sell them! Here's the thing, Mr.-I've-been-doing-this-forty-years: 1. They have now been confirmed to be circa 1890-1910; which means-- they weren't 'made in the last ten years' my friend- more like over 100 years ago, you ignorant jerk. Additionally, 2. they in fact WERE gold, and to be exact--were 22 ct gold. 3. Furthermore, there WAS NO '925' marking...it was a 920 marking, which indicated that they in fact WERE 22 carat gold...And last but certainly not least--4. They were appraised at almost 1200.00 just two hours after your trainwreck of a valuation! So, you basically made yourself look as ignorant as you truly are--not only by revealing your true lack of knowledge--but more so in revealing your true lack of respect-- for BOTH fine jewelry antiquities, and for 20-something, polite, respectful, and driven young women. So, there ya have it. To all my Gainesvillians - stay away from this dude. He's a disrespectful jerk who doesn't know his @ss from a hole in the ground. Fact. read more

I have several complaints about this place. I tried to be fair with how I perceived the place, but 3 separate incidents have led me to give such a low rating. 1) The owner is a douche bag. Why? He is horrible with customer service and condescending. He has a bad attitude in general. He rips you off because he goes under the assumption that you know nothing of jewelry. The first time I went, I brought in 5 charm pieces to be attached to a link I bought at the store. Even WITH providing my OWN charms, he charged an exorbitant amount and overcharged on labor (I paid almost $100 for a simple bracelet!). I only stuck through with the job because I really liked the chain and I was determined to have my charm bracelet. 2) Within the span of that week, one of my charms that he "sauntered" on came off. He knew he had just made the bracelet and rather than giving me a courtesy of fixing it up (it wasn't a hard job to reattach one charm) he charged me not $5, but $10 to reattach a charm. REALLY? $10 to reattach something that takes 5 min?! But, I paid for it because I decided to stick with the man that had handled this job. 3) After some time, I decided to go back to the store to get a lobster claw clasp for an anklet that I have. He publicly bashed me about having someone on hold on the phone while asking him a quick question about my needs (whether the action of me having someone on hold on the phone is rude or not is irrelevant. How dare a business owner criticize a POTENTIAL customer about their habits. wow!) He wanted to charge me $15 for attaching lobster claw clasp and an extra $10 for the labor to saunter it on. The labor is not at ALL even taxing for what I was asking for. Completely overpriced. I told him I could definitely get the job done for cheaper than $25 for an anklet!! With arrogance and attitude he handed it back to me and said, "Well, ya know, we're not the cheapest jewelers around." NO. YOU'RE NOT. Lesson learned. On top of the owner's terrible attitude and customer service skills, just like his quotes for simple repairs, everything in the store is over priced (trust me, I've taken a look around and I know jewelry)! P.S - I got the SAME job done at Calico Jewelers off of 34th st and Williston Rd for only $15 (this including the fact that they were going to polish my chain AND attach and saunter it on). read more

I went to Renaissance Jewelers to have a gemstone made into a ring. My gemstone was chipped by one of the employers. When I asked what had happened to my stone Rob, the owner, snapped and screamed that it wasn't his fault. He told me it was his employee who had chipped my stone and he would not apologize for something he didn't do. I felt like I was dealing with a 5 year old child. Once the gemstone was sadly shaved in half, I received my ring which was the wrong size. He resized me, I returned a week later only to find the ring still the incorrect size, he then accused me of consuming too much salt. At this point I should have walked away, but foreseeing a refund on this ring would be absolutely impossible given his refusal to even grant me an apology, I gave him one more chance. I finally received this hideous ring and a week later my precious gemstone fell out never to be found. 500$ down the drain. I wanted to support a local business, but in return I experienced this worst service of my life. While the gemstone was not expensive, it was very special because I had purchased it during a trip to India. The service was so horrific I thought I was being punked! Robbie can not understand why have been using Renaissance jeweler for over 20 yrs. I am very disappointed in my current dealings in watch and ring repairs. I recently discovered 10 yrs ago I had links taken out of my 1984 Rolex diamond watch. I discovered the band had been damaged to point I can not replace links because Robbies watch repairer soldered end links so its now impossible to fix without replacing the whole expensive watch band. He shrugged it off and said he had been old watch repairer. So being stupid I gave him my citizens watch for new battery. Was told it needed capacitor at $100. Was returned to me not working . I returned it to be fixed and after 4 weeks I am told it needs to be sent to citizens for $200 or more repair. The watch is worth less than $100. Do Not trust him to be honest. I just purchased $20 watch and had 2 others repaired by nice old man on 6th street for $45. Now for green garnet ring which I purchased from Robbie for $5,000. He sent the ring for stone to be polished at $200.Well at end it cost me $270. Problem I wore it next 2 days to Discovery Cove and enjoyed great day. Fortunately I discovered the prongs were about to let green garnet fall out. Robbie had fixed the ring and reset the stone however the tips of yellow gold were replaced with white gold. And stone was about to fall out. Robbie refuses to pay Klaus the $200 to fix his mistake which I only feel is resonsible. . I only want my broken watch and I will never use Robbie again. May be he needs to retire. My Business is now with AG KLAUS who stand by there workmanship..BEWARE OF THIS BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sorry my language was improper but after Klaus seeing the ring and his attitude was poor, dishonest, shoddy work and nasty attitude hanging up on me twice.. At the recommendation of two co-workers, I took my engagement ring here to be re-tipped. When I picked it up it came back with a badly bent post and the "new" tips look like ugly blobs around the diamond- both problems highly visible without using a loupe. When I did view it under a loupe, I could see that one of the new tips actually came back with a small crack in it. I was so horrified at the poor repair job that I didn't trust leaving my ring there again for them to 'repair' this bad repair. read more

I brought in a mish-mash of stuff I didn't want, and walked away with repairs, great new stuff and was stunned at the low price because of his willingness to trade off my old junk. Nice! He's even going to polish my sterling flatware. Anyone can get the tarnish off, but these pieces need to be polished, and that should be done by a pro. Next job, though is going to be making me a charm bracelet out of my friend's old cufflinks.
