Bought a Groupon for a friend and I to get a bikini wax. We were a startled by the reviews on yelp pertaining to Groupon. But a brazilian wax for only $21, we couldn't give that up so we gave it a chance. The salon has a pretty and classy interior, and the lady at the friend was friendly. Make sure to call the salon to set up an appointment with the lady who does the waxing because she is separate from the salon itself, she has her own business within the salon. Anyways, this lady is really friendly! She made my friends experience and mine so much better because it was our first time, she was really comforting and explained the process. She uses almond wax which is delicate on the skin compared to regular wax because almond wax simply pulls on the hairs and not the skin. If you're 21 or older she offers wine, I thought that was pretty neat. Lastly, she made our first time a good time. She knows what she's doing and also carries a lot of experience. I was a loyal customer of Renaissance Salon for about seven years. I would get everything from facials, pedicures, hair cuts, up dos, brow waxes and massages. After my most recent experience, I definitely have the seven-year-itch! I've moved on, and for good reasons. What I liked about the salon was that you could get great service from just about anyone there, they are all very well-trained. That's a good thing because I've noticed a lot of turnover there. When my massage therapist left, I followed her to Balance Massage and never looked back. While they have the best pedicures, I've opted for less expensive places at times. So more than anything, I have been loyal to Renaissance for hair styling. For the past couple years, I've been getting Bio Ionic (permanent chemical) straightening done. The no frizz and fuss-free result has been amazing. I went from wavy, unmanageable hair to pin-straight and maintenance-free (no need to even blow dry) in a matter of hours. The treatment costs about $500 (when you include a 20% tip) and lasts for six months. This past time I had the treatment done, something went terribly wrong! My hair was fried, and I had to have them cut off about 7 inches (and that still didn't undo all the damage). The way they handled the situation was unacceptable in my book. My stylist, Lisa, handled it well, took full responsibility and offered to do anything she could for free to make it better. I asked for a refund and she had to get the owner's approval. The owner would only concede half of the charged amount (minus the $75 tip I paid, so only $212 of the $500 I spent!). I've paid them thousands of dollars over the years and never once complained about a service. So, as you can guess, I won't ever be paying them another dime. There are many other salons in the area with talented stylists, and I'm happy to try them out. Meanwhile, I'm still growing out my damaged hair. read more

The girl that I had spoke to made an appointment for 2 PM today. In 2014 I went to Renaissance for a short trim off my long, thick, healthy blonde hair. The stylist turned the chair so I couldn't see the mirror and chopped off my hair to jaw length. When I saw what she'd done, I started crying: my hair was the only part of me I felt was beautiful. Then the owner came over and ended up selling me expensive bonded extensions that ruined what hair I had left. I also went into debt paying for extensions for three years. I think this may have been a set up of sorts. Circa 2020, my hair is too sparse and fragile for extensions. I don't think I'll ever have hair like I used to. I feel like I was assaulted. I got a Groupon for a haircut, and my experience was alright. The location was in a nice shopping mall area. It was clean and bright inside with a Spanish playlist going on. I came on a Saturday when it was appointment only, and there were only 2 stylists working. My appointment was at 11am, but she was still working on her 10:30am appointment. I don't know how they thought they could schedule appointments like that, but I ended up waiting until 11:30-35 when she sat me down while the other client waited. I wanted layers, but I feel like my haircut was a bit rushed. It's been a week since my haircut, and I'm also starting to see splitends even though I had asked for 2" off (enough to get my previous splitends out). I don't know if this is because of Kelly cuts (Her style was not what I'm used to seeing other stylists cut...) or if the scissors were dull. My haircut looks fine, but my hair is not at all healthier than before my haircut. It's okay, but I wouldn't recommend. read more

There was a promotion for their salon: $40 for multiple services. At first I thought it was too good to be true but a friend of mine was actually in charge of these promotions and assured me it was legit. The $40 included a facial, 30 minute massage, shampoo-cut-dry-style, and a mani-pedi. There were stipulations about the services of course and if we want to upgrade the service, it shows how much. I went into their salon for the first time in January 2011 and opted to get the haircut + the fixin's. I wanted to upgrade to a single-process treatment for $75 and I specifically told them I wanted highlights when I called them to book my appointment. They said that was fine and to bring my my coupon. The salon itself was AWESOME. So pretty, modern, and stylish...they were definitely upgrading because they were switching out their chairs during my services there. The people were very nice as well...they seemed a little understaffed but at first I thought they could manage. I ended up getting my hair done and it took over 3.5 hours. As a person who never gets her hair done, I wasn't sure if this was normal but I did find myself waiting for someone to either wash my hair or finish up my hair because somebody was busy doing something else. I'm a very patient person so naturally I wasn't going to get upset...I mean, I'm paying close to nothing by doing this, right? Wrong. After my highlights were finished, I paid almost $400 for the treatment. (This doesn't even include tip.) Apparently, the upgrade is for a SINGLE COLOR ONLY...not highlights. But if I specifically asked about the upgrade on my coupon AND mentioned the highlights, you'd think someone would point out my incorrect thinking. Just recently, one of my girlfriends called me asking to speak to my friend who sold us the gift certificates. (A large group of us bought them thinking we'd be able to get services done all together). Unfortunately my friend does not work for the promoting company anymore so I had to speak to someone at the salon regarding my girlfriends issue. Apparently they don't allow groups to take part of these services with the gift certificate because "they lose money" when that happens. What? Why does being in a group matter? Nowhere on the gift certificate does it specify "NO GROUPS PLEASE." We as "new customers" don't really want to hear how you're losing money on a promotion that YOU started! This does not give anyone a good impression about your salon. The girl I spoke to was nice but was trying to stress the fact that they "lose money" every time a "Smart Circle" (the promotion deal) customer comes in. And is that our fault that we took advantage of a good deal? Who doesn't want to pay $40 for multiple services at a nice salon? She even tried to compare me as a "Smart Circle" customer to a regular-paying customer. I don't think she realized that what if I really liked their services and became a "regular-paying" customer like everyone else? Well that option is definitely out the window. I want to just finish up these services that I paid for and not go back to that salon again...if they were trying to get a large clientele with this promotion, book a FEW WEEKS in advance so you don't hear their "losing money" lecture. Also, on the gift certificate AND their website, they say they close at 7PM from Tues- Thurs. Apparently this is wrong and they close at 5PM according to my girlfriend who spoke to someone else on the phone. I don't know what the deal is, but this is false advertisement. As nice as their salon is, it doesn't make up for all of these "occurrences" right before my eyes as a potential client of theirs. read more

I purchase a Groupon & went to this salon for partial highlights and had a terrible experience! When I made the appt, I requested an experienced person. Sweet lady but had no experience & didn't know how to blow dry curly hair! Beware of additional fees, they are very slick at this salon. I paid an extra $70. She left highlights in too long (over35 mins) which made the highlights super light & then charged me $45 extra to tone it down. I specifically told her I wanted very subtle highlights. Kelly took the time to go over what I was looking to do and she offered some suggestions that I could do this visit and any future visit. I am super picky when it comes to getting my hair done. I have been to many, many stylists since being in the area for two years and I can honestly say she gave me the best hair cut I've ever had! The only complaint I have is I couldn't recreate it how she perfectly styled it at the salon, but I came close enough! I am looking forward to booking an appt again with her soon! I made a mistake of purchasing a coupon through Groupon before reading the reviews on this place. Once I read the reviews on this hair salon I was very worried. I thought I had wasted my money. But I decided to try it out anyways, since I was new in this area and didn't have a regular hairdresser yet anyways. The Groupon coupon clearly says $50 and up for a single-process color, which was what I wanted. When I called to make an appointment I was told that a single-process color actually started at $55. Remembering all the reviews I read on this place, I immediately thought I was being ripped off already. But it was only $5 difference so I didn't care much. However, when I got to my appointment I found out that it actually started at $75, which is a big difference from what the Groupon and their website said - $50. I was not happy. From there on I made sure to ask how much everything was going to cost before they got started, and my hairdresser told me upfront exactly how much it was going to cost. When I asked her about the price difference she said that their current website is old and that they are under a new management now which is why the prices were different. I did tell her that it was a possible lawsuit if someone was really unhappy about it and was willing pursuit it in a legal way - false advertisement is illegal under United States advertising regulation. I was told that the new owner was working on launching a new website. The girl who answered my call to make an appointment was very unpleasant. The girl who was at the front desk when I got to my appointment wasn't any friendlier either, she was rather a little standoffish. However, my hairdresser, Juani, was very friendly and nice and honest. Overall I wasn't happy about the place, however, I loved Juani who did my hair. She made me feel confortable, it was fun listening to her, she was easy to talk to, and most importantly I came out of that place with my hair shinier than ever. I went here the other day to get my eyebrows waxed because my eyebrows seemed to be very upset with me at the time. I had noticed the salon on multiple occasions since my boyfriend works in the same shopping center. The woman who waxed my eyebrows ended up waxing off over half of my left eyebrow. My eyebrow started near my pupil. I will never get you eyebrows waxed here. I also want to clarify that I hear the words every woman speak after the I got my eyebrows waxed. Another employee said to the girl who did this unspeakable act to my eyebrows, "Ohh, I don't know that you waxed eyebrows." I love, LOVE the haircut and color I got yesterday from my stylist, Marie A. I just moved to VA Beach and hadn't found a salon yet so used a Groupon coupon for Renaissance. I had no idea if the salon or stylist would be any good. I was also very nervous because I was going for a significant change in style and getting highlights for the first time in 3 years. But, Marie put me right at ease, took the time to listen to my concerns and wishes, helped me figure out what would look good on me, then gave me exactly what I asked for. I came home and my husband has not stopped telling me how cute my new haircut is! I love playing with it and trying out different styles. Thank you to Marie, I give her 5 out of 5 stars, she is wonderful and I think I've found my new stylist!! The only reason I brought this rating down to a 4 star is that I was told over the phone that a cut and highlights would not run me over $120. Then, when I paid the bill, it was $165. That's quite a difference. I only have shoulder-length hair and got full instead partial highlights --I assume that was the cause of the up-charge. My esthetician, AshleyMarie, is the most pleasant, punctual and professional young lady I know! I have been going to her since the end of 2015. I found a Groupon special online and purchased it for Microdermabrasion. I was VERY skeptical about getting the procedure done since I am dark complected and read every article about it, but she reassured me I would benefit from it along with a few of her specialty treatments. As a stylist I've had many customers run to this shop when they don't like my very fair prices for my services. This salon is famous for giving extream low ball prices and quadrouples at register. Then after their hair is a mess they exspect me to fix it for my original fair and 1/3 this salon bill. Note trusted an x employee of this salon with my hair wich has always been long and I had a pixie to cut off the straw. Platinum in Norfolk or Gary Allen are the only 2 salons I'd refer a customer to. read more

I wish I don't even have to give this place one star; their business was horrific. First the owner/hair dresser I had strongly recommended a different dye type than I had discussed with her on the phone, and after informing her of my reluctancy and concern that it'd been years since dying my hair, she turned my hair purple/mahogany. Then she said it was fine until I told her I couldn't go to work with purple hair, and she insulted the military saying that if she'd known I was in, she would have known I was needing a normal hair color!!!! She bleached it twice without telling me what she was doing to lighten it a little, charged me for the bleaching and the difference in all over dye (since when is that more expensive than highlights which were originally discussed??), and threatened me twice. I still got reprimanded at work. I've never been to a place that charged and charged, particularly for their mistakes. She told me it was my mistake, too, that I had requested that color. i asked for a trim and my hair cut off into terrible layers... I went back and had the owner, Ista, fix it. She put in some highlights for free but I still hate the cut. I went somewhere else for a third haircut and now it's wearable but it's so short!!! I had such long hair, it took me forever to grow it that long! Now it's winter and my hair is an extremely short bob cut! I'll never go back and I strongly urge you to go somewhere else. I don't understand why the girl destroyed my hair when all I asked for was a trim. The only thing I can think of is she did it on purpose. I went in for a mani/pedi using a pilot online daily deal. The offer was well priced and while I have my "usual" place for mani/pedi I figured I would try it out. My nails look great, but hardly a word was muttered from the person working on me it made me feel very uncomfortable. That is until I asked about a product they offer and then she would stop trying to sell it to me!!! And I didn't find the place all that "Gorgeous" or "serene". I purchased a groupon for this salon, not knowing what the reviews were. I just moved to the area and groupon has been a great way to find places. I saw salon pop up on groupon and bought right away. I do tend to be very picky when it comes to my hair and salons, and I almost always read reviews. this time I didnt and im really glad i didnt, because the negative reviews wouldve turned me away. i was very pleased with the customer service and my stylist. Itsa (the owner) cut and styled my hair. she did it exactly the way i wanted it and it turned out fantastic! The receptionst and the lady who washed my hair were very frendly. it was beautifully decorated, and had a warm welcoming feel. It was very busy while I was there and i thought the salon was very well run and organized. the staff helped eachother out. I was incredibly shocked to read the revews from the others, and sad to know they had bad experiences. Going through changes with management or restructuring a business is hard and can produce some bad experiences. So I hope you give the salon a chance. To me it seems as though the salon has made it through the changes and came out strong on the other side. I had a great experience. Another bad review for this place. Hair turned out okay, but this place is a scam with their prices. Do not trust the website as a reference for cost. They charge about Double what the site says and that of other professional salons. Also, got my hair colored and I still have bad roots when I when I put it up. Already feel like it needs to be done again. You can get much better service and price somewhere else. I was afraid to go there at all because of the other bad reviews, but I thought I would give them a chance anyways-BAD IDEA. I have been going to Renaissance for over 7 years. I've had prom updues done, multiple haircuts and styles, conditioning treatments etc. I loved going there and i loved my stylist - Itsa - who is now the new owner. I moved out of the area last year and on a recent visit back to VA i had called couple of weeks in advance to schedule an appointment. Right before I was about to leave for my appointment i got a phone call from the salon that the stylist couldn't make it. I was ok with that no big deal things happen to everyone. My mom also visits this salon and this has happened to her several times in the past year. The reason for the two stars was because of my wedding appointment. I made my appointment one month in advance. I come to find out that my stylist is going to be going out of town the week of my wedding (the wedding was on a sunday) but would be back on Friday. Mind you this was told to my mom and not me. The day before the wedding I receive a text message that the stylist is not going to make it. I asked if anyone else in the salon would be able to take care of me and didn't hear anything back for 5 hours!!! This is the day before the wedding - majority of salons require a pre-consultation, advance notice, and most depressing of all they DON'T work on Sundays. I was freaking out but thanks to my mom's boss I was able to get someone to come to the house and do my hair. This was the biggest disappointment from this place and i'm pretty easy to please, but needless to say no matter how good my stylist was I will NEVER go back there and i visit VA often. I don't mean to slam the place but not everyone can handle being a business owner and the way things are going at this place and all the other negative reviews I've read it doesn't seem like the place will retain it's old cliantel or gain a new one for that matter. After purchasing the groupon offered by the salon I visited their website to view the services that they offer. I found them to be right in line with most salons I've been to, charging $65 and up for foil highlights and $50 and up for a cut and style. My hair is medium length and it usually costs me between $150 and $180 to have my hair colored, highlighted, cut, and styled. I was a little put off during my experience at the salon because it felt as if things were taking exceptionally long. My appointment was at 2:00 pm and although my stylist was ready I was told we had to wait for a chair to open because there were more stylist on duty than chairs. We finally got started around 2:45. After my highlights were put in and I sat under the dryer for a while, my stylists rinsed my hair, at which time it was already 4:30. I received a phone call from my husband telling me he needed to go to work and I needed to come home to watch our baby. I explained to my stylist that I was now short on time and asked how much longer she expected it would take, i even offered to leave with wet hair after my cut. She assured me it would only be an hour more at the most. However, after my shampoo she explained the seat and station she had been working on me at was now taken and we would have to wait again for a seat to become free. In addition my stylist seemed very unprepared frequently having to runaround the salon looking for her flat iron, brush, products, blow-dryer etc... She also spent a lot of time chatting with the other employees often stopping what she was doing to gossip with her friends. Finally at 6:00 pm my hair was finished, I was relatively happy with it although it was curlier than I had wanted it; I had asked for slight waves, and i ended up with tight curls. When it was time to pay I was charged $295 minus the $60 groupon. When I asked about the high price i was told by my stylist (Jauni) that she charges $100 per hour. When I complained that a huge portion of the time was spent waiting for an available seat, and that it seemed my stylist was unprepared and exceptionally slow; she replied that theirs is a high demand salon and worth every penny. I paid the amount, but left feeling cheated and mislead. I will never return and wouldn't recommend this salon to anyone else. I feel it is outrageous to charge so much for a highlight and cut, but if a salon or stylists expects to charge so much than at least they should provide exceptional customer service, be prepared, and act professionally; unfortunately none of these were the case. This was not the best cut and style I've ever had by far; yet it was by far the most expensive. Further nowhere on the website does it state that their stylists charge by the hour and strangely their most expensive spa package is less than $295. In fact for $269 i could have had five hours of a Seaweed four layer facial, Swedish massage, Spa pedicure, Spa manicure, Shampoo & blow-dry, Make-up and Complimentary lunch. I'm very unhappy with my experience. read more
