Renato Pizza is one of those place lost in time. If it were a large sit-down with a huge menu (and theirs isn't small) with a rotating menu then this wouldn't be a positive trait, but for what it is, this makes it even more wonderful and adds to its classic charm. The small space with just a few tables; the kind I remember as a kid in the eighties and early nineties that are built in with the melamine attached benches shaped like a wonderful trip out of a bygone era that were already old back then. A colorful cast of characters behind the counter that are constantly making a plethora of varieties of pies with smiles on their faces, even when it's silent inside. We stopped here on a whim while in Swarthmore visiting some consignment stores. Honestly, I had no idea Renato was even there, but when looking for somewhere to eat, the mood was for something quick and everything else we saw nearby was pricy or too long of an experience to get involved in. This is when the natural hook of the local pizza place sank in. Standing like a bastion in the middle of the block, only a short few steps away from the college and sandwiched between a wine bar and a small shop, it was worth a visit for a quick lunch, and now I have gone back countless times, with every time being a unique experience with slices I have never seen before there, and frequently not anywhere! This also brings me to my favorite part; they sell slices......so many slices.....of all different colors and toppings and sauces. And they are huge! They're not necessarily "cheap" but they are extremely reasonable compared to other "large slice" shops and two won't cost you more than any other normal pizza place. This is the penultimate stop to grab two with a fountain soda, sit down for a quick fifteen minutes to a half hour, and be on your way. When inside this citadel of dough and cheese, it is apparent that people in local employ come here quite often, likely because of the value and the absolute great quality of the pizza. I have only been in here in the summer, so I cannot speak as to what the crowd is like when Swarthmore College is in session, but everything is always put in the oven and provided piping hot right to the counter only minutes after you order. I have never been left waiting. Unfortunately, I have never tried anything here other than their slices. But, I offer this as a badge of honor to Renato Pizza, as there is so much variety and quality of that variety, that every single time I have gone, I have never even needed to explore deeper into their menu. The bottom line is, they are good at what they do and from the looks of it, they have been doing it a long time and don't seem like they're stopping anytime soon. So head on down and spend a nice afternoon in Swarthmore and stop in for a slice for lunch, dinner, or possibly even both. Because if you don't, you likely just don't like good pizza. Visiting Swarthmore today, so stopped by downtown Swarthmore on the way out for lunch. This place feels like your simply small town pizza / sandwich / wings place. Good for what it is, but nothing that'll wow you. Our small group was helped relatively quickly, and we were able to get a few slices reheated, and I was able to get an Italian hoagie for myself. More bread and toppings personally, but at least the slices were huge! Solid for OK quality food. Nothing to phone home for necessarily though. There's decent seating inside for small groups of folks to eat, as well as some tables outside. read more

Ordered a plain pie when doing some Christmas shopping. Picked up and walked 50 yards to the brew pub across the street that doesn't serve food. This is really good pizza, first and only time I've had it. Just plain to satisfy troops. First thing I note is the pie is cooked! Seriously so many times pies are pulled before they get that crisp on the crust. Good cheese to sauce. Garlic flavor in a non sweet tomato-y sauce. I'm happy to have tried it! read more

I will admit the slices are very large in size, but not so great otherwise. I wasn't expecting the best of the best here, but I thought it would be better. I have been coming here for my whole life and so much has changed but it is still one of my favorite places to eat around home. Although the prices have gone up naturally over the years I still always feel satisfied by the food. Their pizza has a thick crust which I love and there's always lots of cheese and sauce. The space itself is a classic warm pizza parlor and was always a great place to come with friend after school. The workers are always nice but obviously I'm partial to the workers who were there when I was a kid. Also, they have the best water ice/italian ice ever! read more

Nice place to come to in the middle of the big world of stores in Swathmore. Why I've never been in this area before I had no idea but a friend of mine decided to take me there. The inside and dining area was fairly small but welcoming. With friendly staff and good menu items I can be sure many love to get their food here. I was starving and had a cheeseburger which came with fries. It was definitely filling. Great food. Though I'm not so close to the area I hope to come by to Renato's sometime in the future. Just happened to be in Swarthmore, which I rarely get to. Just happened to feel like a quick bite to eat. Just happened to find this place based on Yelp reviews. That's how it works sometimes. They make a good slice. I like it when I see a bunch of pies on the counter to choose from different toppings. Not enough Delco pizza joints do this, though i suspect there's a reason for that as a lot of the Delco pizza places I frequent are far more delivery oriented rather than walk in and grab a slice oriented. I've had a thing for buffalo chicken slices lately. The one they make here has a tangy sauce that seemed like it was a mix of BBQ sauce with the hot sauce. I polished it off happily. It was a huge slice, lots of meat, lots of cheese, worth it for $3.50. I don't know if this is the end all be all place to eat in Swarthmore, but it will do nicely for a quick slice. read more

We called in a takeout order on a Sat. night. We ordered a cheese calzone, chicken fingers with fries, and cheesesteak with hot peppers. I grew up eating Renato's pizza, it is by far the best pizza, hoagies, strombolis, and greek salads! Their pizza is pretty thick crusted, with a generous amount of sauce and toppings, delish! The hoagies are fantastic, especially the italian and tuna. The strombolis are great to share with a friend or two, and the greek salads are chock full of yummy veggies and feta cheese topped with a great dressing. My usual disclaimer applies, pizza is a very personal thing, I'll do my best to stay objective. Large thin style pizzas. Plain, sausage and mushroom are my favorites. The place is small and usually full of kids; to go may be the best option. If you get a slice in house, it is much bigger than a slice of their regular large pizza, one or two will do most folks for lunch. I've had at least one hundred of their pizzas over the years and it has become one of my favorite local pizzas. Very consistent. I highly recommend them. read more

Located in "The Ville" across the train tracks of Swarthmore, Renato's pizza is pretty much the only option for nearby casual food and restaurants. There are 5 booths for seating, and one large flatscreen T.V. on the corner, usually showing a soccer match or whatnot. The menu was vast, carrying steaks, specialty pizzas, and sandwiches (hoagies). The chef makes the pizza in front of you, so that's a sight to see. When I tried to search for the prices for pizza by the slice, I noticed it wasn't on the menu. I had to ask. It is, $2.50 for cheese, $3.00 for one topping, and $3.50 for more than one topping. They have tomatoes, cheese, pepperoni, broccoli, bacon, ham, pesto, olives, and a few more that I cannot remember. If you do get pizza by the slice, you'll first notice that there are pizzas displayed on the counter. That is where I chose my pizza and the chef then puts the slice in the oven. Not really fresh or made to order. I chose the pesto, olives, and tomato pizza for $3.50. The slice is enormous (1/6 of a 18" pizza?). It's a bit bigger than a Costco pizza slice. The cheese was not soft at all - it was still a bit hard and chewy, not the delicious melted type. The crust was all right. Not crunchy or anything. The best thing about it was its size. Tomatoes were juicy, and olives sufficiently. They have about 6/7 spices for you to put on your food, located on the counter (basil, cheese, pepper, etc.) This was my first meal at Swarthmore. It was not spectacular, but it was sufficient. It'll have to do for college. I don't have many other options for outside food anyway. read more

Had the worst pizza delivered from Renatos ever!!!!! We ordered an extra cheese pizza, well done, delivered. It was delivered and it did have extra cheese. However, the cheese was not on the pizza but sloshed over the side. Furthermore, it was underdone, not even close to well done or fully cooked. So the cheese was melted, not brown at all, and the dough was barely edible. It's been a downward, slow spiral since Alex left the business. It's clear that they really don't care. read more
