The best family owned Italian restaurant in OC. I've ordered their Rigatoni Renato several times and it tastes amazing every time. The portion is just right, the chicken is tender and juicy, sauce is creamy, and the sun dried tomatoes and mushrooms completes this dish perfectly. You also get delicious garlic bread.. it's baked to the right amount of crunchiness. For $13.95 with your choice of soup or salad, what's to complain? Service is also superb. The Only reason why I'm not giving this restaurant 5 stars is because the pizza was soggy from too much sauce or not being baked long enough for the crust to harden, but overall, everything was delicious and the customer service was good. Decent pasta place, I was thinking more of a 3.5 than 4 but I rounded up. I wish that I could've enjoyed the food more since the service was so amazing but it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The garlic bread they gave in the beginning was well toasted but lacked in some flavor. The calamari fritti was delicious! It was perfectly crispy and the marinara sauce it came with had a pinch of spice in it so it was perfect. The carbonara was a bit more on the dry side and tasted alright. The rigatoni renato was pretty good, I think the sauce was really good. The only downside was that it was watery - I don't think they fully drained the pasta prior to mixing it with the sauce which made it super watery/soupy. The fettuccine ai funghi was alright too, just a typical creamy fettuccine with mushroom, again, a bit watery. Overall, the service was perfect, they kept checking in on us and they were always so nice and polite. I think there's a lot of potential to be better but overall it was a good experience. read more

It was the first time trying this place. Our tax guy highly recommended this place the last time we met. I have to say the food was good. We got spaghetti with meat sauce, minestrone soup and a cheese pizza. All were very good. The spaghetti's sauce was a little watery but still very tasty. The soup was very flavorful and had a good taste to it. The pizza was probably my least favorite. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't memorable. The crust was just okay. I don't think I would order the pizza again, but the pasta dishes and soup were very good. Overall, I definitely would return and try more of their dishes. The restaurant has more than 2 servers and only 2 tables occupied but waited 30' for bread and olive oil after remind them 3 times. I gave this restaurant many chances and always disappointed every time. The worse Italian restaurant services ever. Server attitude are horrible. Just want to leave and never come back. The service and food here is excellent! Talking with the waitstaff after convinced me that they that take cleanliness and high quality food products very seriously, unlike many other restaurants, they don't even have a freezer at all! When we first entered the establishment I was impressed with the gigantic wall Murals and friendly service. It is rather small, but had a nice intimate boutique feeling. It's a great place for a romantic meal. The waitstaff were very knowledgable and eager to please. Everything that was made on site was excellent. The appetizer bread had a nice crunch to it and just the right amount of seasoning. The lamb chops and the mushrooms were heavenly! The takeout pizza was just okay but the rest of the meal more than made up for that. The seafood and pasta was near-perfect! I'm impressed. Honestly the only negative was the slightly small size of the place and my friend's first order of drink was not great, but they replaced it at no charge. Everything else was excellent!! Seriously try the mushroom dish, it's to die for! We topped the evening off with a delectable dessert! Amazingly delicious ice cream. Renato's recently catered our Christmas party for over 100 guest at the David L Baker Golf Course. Their service and food was nothing short of spectacular. Best food and value! We had a great menu of chicken marsala, chicken parmigiana, lasagna, penne pasta, salad and garlic bread. They delivered and picked up as well as provided us with plenty of food, chaffing dishes to keep the food warm. We are originally from the east coast and picky about our Italian food. It was weird to find an Italian restaurant wedged in to Little Saigon Plaza, but since it appeared to be an older establishment, I figured it had to be pretty good to have stayed in business here since the '80s. We took a chance on Renato's for dinner last night. They keep the interior on the dim side. We arrived early (4:30) and the place was empty. It stayed empty for the 45 minutes or so of our visit. To be fair, maybe it's one of those restaurants with a rockin' night life, really picking up after dark? I only know that it wasn't encouraging at that time, it actually felt creepy to be the only seated table in the room. The "visions of North Italy" playing on the flatscreen overhead did help a little, and the huge wall mural featuring happy tourists boating in a Mediterranean coastal scene added some nice ambiance. The complimentary basket of bread was actually thick slices of well-done toast. No butter, no Parmesan cheese, no dipping oil. The soups and salads were served quickly -- clam chowder, minestrone, and garden-style starter salad with peppercinis and a few bits of cherry tomato: very standard, overall. At this point, you won't be set up for overly high expectations of your main course, at least... ...aaaand you're batting 1000. A nice, if average, Chicken Cacciatore, a serviceable Gnocchi with Gorgonzola cream sauce, and a decent Spaghetti with meat sauce. All requirements satisfied. No complaints. Our pleasant server was tipped and we were out the door. It does feel a little unfinished to post a review without having tried Renato's pizza or calimari, which are the two things people seem to highlight in other reviews. I still may sample these, eventually. As it stands now, this restaurant was okay for all intents and purposes of a "I'm in the mood for something non-Asian tonight" dinner. Old school Italian restaurant that is in a run down shopping center. The have really good pizza, their pasta dishes are really large portions and very tasty. Monday through Friday they have lunch specials. I love the eggplant sandwich. It is quite large and if you save half of it for later the sauce will make the leftovers even more tasty. We ordered stuffed mushrooms and an antipasto salad as appetizers and I can't complain about either! Tasty, fresh, and no skimping on the meats! For my entree I ordered the Chicken Cacciatore with steamed vegetables and though the chicken was tender, my whole plate tastes a little bland. Pasta was good but made some basic mistake; water was not drained well in the pasta, rigatoni was undercooked and the dish on the sides were dirty. Staff was very friendly though.
