Really on the fence between 2 and 3 stars. We came in for a nice dinner and I was disappointed by the time I left. The restaurant itself is decorated well and is very welcoming. The menu gave me high hopes bc it has some really great option and great wine. Pros: -server was kind and able to make some good recommendations -charcuterie board was amazing!! -many great cheese options for the charcuterie board Cons: -wine was good but overpriced -we both ordered the gnocchi and received the cacio e pepe, which was rather cool and the sauce wasn't enough to cover all of the pasta. The person I was with is too easygoing to send food back so we just kept our plates and didn't say anything but entrees we're very disappointing. The pasta wasn't Al dente either. -menu is overpriced Overall I wouldn't recommend for a nice dinner unless you want to gamble and receive what you didn't order. I don't usually write reviews, but this restaurant has a very high price point and I just expected a better experience. I hadn't been to Reserve in at least 5 years prior to this dinner, but previously enjoyed it. I went with four other girls for a birthday party on Friday night. Reservation was easy to make and we were seated quickly. Ambiance there is always nice. The good: Our server was pleasant and very knowledgeable. My wine was OK but expensive. The other girls generally enjoyed their cocktails; one of my friends actually didn't care for hers and they were nice enough to replace it with a different one. The charcuterie board that they put together for us was excellent. They were very helpful with our dietary restrictions and we all enjoyed it. Three of the girls ordered the sea bream and raved about it. The bad: We ordered 12 Prince Edward Island oysters that were the special for the evening. When they arrived, we only had six PEI oysters and six were from New Zealand. When we asked the runner why we had two different kinds, he shrugged and said "they must've run out." I would have appreciated a heads up from the server because the New Zealand oysters were certainly not as good. I ordered the carbonara pasta with sausage. It was lukewarm when it arrived, and had the consistency of reheated Kraft mac & cheese. (ie the sauce was thickened and stuck to the pasta.) I only ate about a third of it and then set it aside. When a different server came and took it away, he didn't ask if it was OK, or even if I wanted a box. Finally, three of the five girls from our party ended up with gastrointestinal distress the following day. Overall I would probably only return for a glass of wine and a charcuterie board. My entrée was subpar and I just expected better. I am still disappointed in how much money I spent on this dinner. Had a business dinner here. We came a little early though and sat at the bar for happy hour. The bartender didn't seem to want to serve us happy hour drinks however, and he was a little uppity for my taste. Especially since I'm from Los Angeles where I'm used to that attitude, but not in Grand Rapids. However, our waiter was nice. The food was great. I had duck and it was phenomenal. The only thing I will say is that it's a far more expensive restaurant for the food than other restaurants in the area. HOLY MOLY. Best meal I've had in a really long time. Hands down. My ass was severely kicked in the best way possible thanks to Reserve, their yummy food, wine, and awesome staff. Huzzah! I had always loved Journeyman in Fennville and was really sad when it closed down. Luckily some friends of mine that live in Saugatuck informed me that Chef Matthew Millar had moved to Reserve so naturally I made reservations when I knew I was going to be in Saugatuck for a weekend. I was expecting deliciousness but good grief! This knocked me out! First--a charcuterie board with speck, salami, and three amazing cheeses, herbed flat bread, and some parings like local honey, mustard, and house made pickled onions and cornichon. The cheeses were a delicious goat's milk blue (went great with the salami and mustard), a harder cow's milk cheese (that I loved with the honey), and, my favorite, Evergreen Lane's Poet's Tomme (a semi-hard washed rind cow's milk cheese that was ahhhmazing with the honey as well). In fact, I loved this cheese so much that we went to the nearby Evergreen Lane in Fennville to get some directly from the creamery (and play with adorable baby goats!). Pair these cheeses with a pork fat fries and chardonnay flight and oh man! Tasty times! Second course was eggs on eggs--a slice of toasted brioche topped with scrambled eggs and roe--oh dear. This was also good. VERY good. Wrapped the savories up with a spice rubbed roast half chicken served on top of the most amazing mashed potatoes I've ever had and spinach. I'm serious. These potatoes...I did a dance they were so good. Creamy, buttery and smooth. I died and went to heaven--a heaven filled with little mashed potato clouds that I nommed my way though for the rest of eternity. We were so painfully full but we HAD to have dessert so we decided to split the dark chocolate terrine served with a small dish of walnut anglaise, sprinkled with sea salt and cacao nibs and an orange torta. Hummina hummina hummina! AWOOGA AWOOGA! Everything else on the menu sounded amazing. From the house made sausage, salads, and fish. I could have had one of everything if my tummy allowed. And the wines! Such a huge selection by bottle or glass, plus a number of reasonably priced wine flights and beers of all kinds. The space is very modern. Bright and airy, raised bench seating in the middle of the first floor with stairs that lead to a second, the fixtures come right out of Ikea in the best way possible. Lots of interesting things to look at. The music came right out of my college mixtape, again in the best way possible. Seriously it was like my college radio show play list--Radiohead (The Bends era), Blur, and a slew of other britpop and more chill tracks. The staff was also phenomenal. Our waiter was knowledgeable and we took his advice on more than one occasion, and we were never steered wrong. He even brought our leftovers in a foil swan which was pretty hilarious. The hostess and I had a fun chat about fashion as we were leaving and everyone was just pleasant and friendly. All around the best experience I've had in recent memory. Ordered takeout today and it was amazing! I wanted a burger and wine pairing and was not disappointed. The burger was well packaged and the fries were separate too, so nothing was soggy. The burger was cooked perfectly and as always the fries were amazing. I ordered the apple cheddar salad for lunch tomorrow and it is also packaged very well. Best of all, the packaging is compostable! I always feel guilty with take-out but want to support our local businesses. Reserve removed all guilt and I can't wait to order more! We came here for a birthday celebration and the service was excellent. The atmosphere is classy and cozy. Tall ceilings with two floors for room to spread out. Three of us ordered then cacio e Pepe and everyone liked it. It was a good solid comfort food. The homemade noodle was the best part of this. It was a great texture. The sauce was exactly as described. I really liked it but it didn't blow me away. The Hungarian mushroom soup was really great. It was loaded with mushrooms and had a great flavor. My husband got the ribeye and he said it was good but for the price he expected better. I tried a bite and it was good and tender. Their restrooms are unisex so pick one . We also ordered a bottle of sparkling, glasses of Cab, and had two cocktails. The mezcal margarita was pretty great. The options for cheese and charcuterie looked great. I will probably go back just to try that with some wine. The prices are on the higher side and their large portions are filling but not overly large. The waiter was excellent. I believe Tom was the name of the gentleman guiding us through our evening. I loved this place for a lot of reasons: - The decor and ambiance swung both ways: you could come here dressed up, or you could come here in jeggings, flats and a blazer (like me). - There are lots of seating options: outside, upstairs, bar, shared table, private tables - Service is fantastic. Very knowledgeable on the wines and the food, extremely friendly, and very attentive - The FOOD and the WINE are amazing. This is what I ate: My perfect meal: - 3 Oysters ($12) and a "taste" sized portion of their nicest champagne (it was a vintage from Champagne, France, don't remember which one). Oysters were three different kinds, it was a perfect pairing. - Heirloom Tomato Salad and a Chardonnay. The heirloom salad is not what I expected. First, it's a HUGE portion size - and they chop up the tomatoes and serve it with a wonderful cheese, some olives, etc. - Gnocchi and a cabernet sauv. The gnocchi was definitely a highlight of my night. It's served soup-like and it's just all around tomato-y and delicious. - Walnut pound cake: it's heavy with whipped cream and sea foam that's sweet enough to give you a cavity, but so delish. He was well informed and very helpful with making wine recommendations that didn't break the bank. Reserve just updated their menu for summer. I had the strawberry salad and then the veggie hash. My friend ordered the spring pea salad and the carbonara. I tried a bite of my friend's spring pea salad and I wish I would have ordered it. It was so bright, refreshing, and flavorful. The strawberry salad was good, but I thought it would have more greens and was hoping for more of a greens-based salad. It almost seems like more of a dessert. Veggie hash was okay. This place was such a great find! It has over 100 wines on tap and is a farm-to-table, or as the menu professed, a forrest-to-table restaurant. I sat at the bar, and initially I ordered a flight of wine and the bartender asked why I ordered it. When I said that I liked one of the wines, he suggested that I just get a glass of that because it's a better deal. Even though it was $5 less to do so, he still recommended it to me. And he was right! I really just wanted one big glass of my favorite. I started with the beet salad. It was SUPER small, but the flavors were delicious. Only after I received the dish did I see the S, M, or L (small, medium, large) beside the sections on the menu. It was a good starter but was truly 3-4 bites of food. For the entree I ordered the Autumn Hash with a fried egg. It was perfectly cooked, delicious, and filling without being heavy. I ended the meal with the almond cake and a dessert wine. Again, the cake was very small, but wonderful! This is certainly a restaurant to check out if you are in the Grand Rapids area! read more

Went here to celebrate my 25 anniversary and two graduation which I had told staff about when I made reservations. The food was fine. I had the pork which I normally stay away from but it was recommended. It was salty and fatty so I wasn't thrilled. This place has a really trendy, clean, and refined ambiance. Always has excellent service, it's pretty impressive. We all started out sharing the fries as an appetizer which was a huge hit. I ordered the Garden Party drink which was light, not too sweet, and very refreshing. I ordered the Ciopinno which was good. loved the sea food in it and the sauce. The squid ink linguine was alright, I would have just preferred normal noodles honestly since it didn't seem like these noodles could soak up the sauce. The noodles were also pretty al dente. When you come here there isn't much to "wine" about. Everything is always top notch, especially the service. We came here last night which prompted the review, but we have dined here on multiple occasions for both food and happy hours. Some of our favorite items: the vanilla bacon, the burger served with fries that are fried in lard with a big garlic mayo on the side. The pate selections are awesome!! On the wine side of things there are fancy and affordable options. If you feel like spending big money you can, or you can usually snag a bottle for $30. Every once and a while if you are on their email list they even do 50% off specials on slow winter nights. read more

Located on a busy street in Grand Rapids, this place has got your dining experience down to a science. There is booth, bar and high table seating with really nice overhead lighting with what looks like bent wood light fixtures. The place is really clean (even the bathroom is spotless) so before you even try their food, you are already feeling pretty, good. If price is an issue for you, try the lunch menu (which is reasonable, around $15/person). Portion sizes are on the small side but that just means you'll have to enjoy every last bite! Lamb Reuben Sandwich: OMG - was it delicious, warm and just the right size! Beware that there is a lot of fat on the lamb (which is probably where all the flavor comes in). Cauliflower Soup: seasoned with Moroccan spices and harissa oil. Beautiful fusion of tastes but not at all 'spicy' (as in, hot). Melon Gazpacho: yikes! This was waaaay too sweet for me. It basically tasted like pureed melon and none of the other ingredients got a chance to shine. I wish they had this under the heading, 'desserts'. This is a gem in the restaurants of Grand Rapids. It is a little bit on the pricier side, so be ready for a nice bill, but know that you are spending money on quality and local products. The wine and champagne offered here is amazing. If you are a connoisseur of fine wine then come here and try a glass. Your glass will run anywhere from $6-$21 so be cautious. It is easy to rack up a large bill with some of the delicious wines they offer. The variety of wines they have here are great, and many of them have been aged for a decent amount of time. The selection and expertise the staff has about wine is what keeps bringing me back. Food here is farm fresh and local. You will have a great selection for a charcuterie. If there is an entree that allows you to choose a cheese of their cheese menu (their burger) take advantage and taste some! Oh, and dessert- let me tell you, the pastry chef definitely knows what she's doing. Don't leave without it or you'll regret it! Besides everything being amazing, along with the service and staff, there is one more thing that makes Reserve very special. The place itself has beautiful decor, and the building is meant to be explored for its immaculate details. Very nice dinner overall, this place is really beautiful. We got right in on a busy Friday night, that made me happy. The service was fast and efficient, the waiter did spill a glass of water on my cell phone, but mistakes happen. The decor and atmosphere was open and arty, very cool all around, even down to the hallways and bathrooms. The food was AMAZING, I was blown away by the mushroom dish, every bite was appreciated. The heirloom tomato salad was so fresh, I could have eaten three of them. There were downsides, besides the bath my phone took. If I spend a really good chunk of change on a dinner, I don't like to sit on top of my fellow diners. A bit more space would have been nice. I expect to be crammed at a trendy brunch spot in downtown Chicago, not an expensive dinner in Grand Rapids. Other than that, it was fantastic. read more

Had both lunch and dinner here and food is great. Conveniently located close to the DeVos Center makes it a good place to visit before or after shows. Tried the pork fat fries but was underwhelmed. The venison loin chop however made up for it. Part of their seasonal offerings, was perfectly cooked. The wild mushrooms in the rice was a good complement to the mild game taste of the venison. Our server was excellent and very knowledgable about their pretty extensive wine list. I'm not a big wine drinker, but she helped me put together a nice flight. This review is a long time coming, a difficult one to write, and the reason why I like to visit a place multiple times before reviewing. With Reserve, it was love at first bite (or sip, as it may have been). But the honeymoon quickly faded. The rating is largely based on the service and some unpleasant experiences I've had. This is a huge bummer because I respect so much of what Reserve does. The wine list is top-notch (best in the city) and Reserve has one of a kind charcuterie for the region. I'd like to enjoy more of the good, but the experience went from bad to worse. With so many places that deliver exceptional service, it's tough to make the case for a return to Reserve. Reserve once had a loyalty program. I signed up and it was amazing. There were some hiccups, but the perks were fantastic. During this time, I visited the restaurant on a near-weekly basis. Without warning or notice to existing members, the program was apparently abruptly terminated. I say apparently because I found out about the program's end by a server who acted dumbfounded when I mentioned it--like it had never existed. This was my first negative experience, where I as a frequent customer was made to feel like an idiot. I'm still bummed that the program went away with nary a word. Several months after this visit, I gave Reserve another chance. I stopped in at typical happy hour time during ArtPrize. When I asked about happy hour specials, the server looked at me like I had two heads and finally said "We don't do happy hour during ArtPrize." Way to express a lack of regard for locals, Reserve. It's a shame because Reserve has a cool ambiance, I love the farm to table concept, and their charcuterie is unparalleled in town. But I just can't handle the snobbery and disaffected service. Maybe they're going for the hipster crowd (anyone else watch It's Always Sunny?). Other than the occasional stop for a perfect glass of wine, Reserve just isn't worth it. read more

I like the "bar area" off from the main seating that puts you right at the charcuterie-making counter. The service was wonderful. Very attentive and accommodating when you're unsure on wine or menu items. The menu hasn't changed much from the last time I was here about 3...4 years ago?? But the menu items are good. Some traditional and some unique flavors. Great portion sizes (not too much so you can/could actually enjoy a 3-4 course meal). I think so many restaurants are now doing rotating menus that Reserve could pick up on that trend. read more

I've been here for lunches, happy hour and dinners and Reserve is a great place. Yes, the menu is pricy. But, it is fresh ingredients and an inventive menu. I have loved everything we've tried here. When you walk in, it is impressive. The lights, the decor and ambiance is very beautiful. The attention to detail is fantastic. The burger is one of my favorites in Grand Rapids. The high quality meat and of course adding ANY cheese certainly makes it stand out. Try the smoked Gouda... out of this world on that burger. The charcuterie and cheese plates are great and ever changing. I can get full on just a large one of those, but I always end up indulging. The homemade pastas are really good, but eat them fast as they get cold. Ask for cheese (or any other side item: salt, pepper, ketchup), while ordering, because at times it takes up to 10 minutes for the server to come back. An opportunity for improvement would have to do with their staff. I like that they wear laid back clothing (jeans and a black shirt), but what they wear doesn't match the price point of this restaurant. Unless it's just a lunch, we don't leave here without paying $100 for two people. I know it's a small thing but it doesn't make sense to me. Finally, the wine list. WOW.
