Very nice looking restaurant however the upstairs was too loud to sit in. Hamburger was burned and French fries cold. Chicken sandwich was dry and overlooked House salad was the highlight. Service was mediocre - waitress did not check on us after food was delivered and had to be flagged down. Not a place I would go again. Beer was just ok. The food here is just not good enough to justify the price. The pulled pork was dry, ask for some BBQ to help it along, they don't have any. Such an awesome little bar and restaurant! If you enjoy disc golf (this guy might) you can enjoy your first beer after your round at a great price. The food is amazing and the onion ring basket is probably big enough to feed a horse, so awesome! DIPA #3 their double IPA is so good, I hope this beer sticks around. We had lunch there yesterday after seeing good reviews on Yelp. I would definitely recommend this place, at least for lunch. A wide selection of their own and guest beers on tap. Cozy atmosphere. Server was attentive and knowledgable. Started with a cheese spread recommended by the server, quite good. My wife had a BLT that included avocado and a poached egg, it was very good, and I had a Kimchi pulled pork sandwich which was excellent. All condiments are made there. I'd give them 5 stars except there was a young couple at the next table with a five year old boy that was pitching a total freak out tantrum, kicking the table and screaming. His parents just ignored him, that kind of crap pisses me off, I never let my kids get away with stuff like that when they were little. Parents that think it's ok to let their kid act up like that in a restaurant should stay home. Management should've gone over there after five minutes and told them, nicely, to get him under control. I think the biggest issue with the Hayseed is that it's trying to be something that it's not. While there were a few positive moments during the night, I was vastly unimpressed with the food and service at this establishment. When we arrived there was a 35-45 minute wait, which was somewhat expected being that it was a Saturday night. We found a seat at the bar to wait it out. The wait ended up being just over an hour. We probably should have just eaten at the bar. While seated at the bar, we had the pleasure of interacting with a very friendly, knowledgeable bartender, who assisted with our adventure through the great variety of Smuttynose beers. Once seated in the upstairs dining section, the loud atmosphere was overpowering. Some sound absorbing panels would go a long way. As we looked through the menu, it became clear that the restaurant is a bit confused about their vision. Some of the dishes seemed very upscale and overly pretentious (yet lacked delivery upon execution) and others like the steak bomb seem to belong in a local pizza joint. For apps our table ordered the charcuterie platter, the wings and the fried cheese. While these dishes tasted fine, the presentation left something to be desired. Example - there was a puddle of blue cheese dressing slopped on a plate next to the wings.  While munching on our appetizers, the server came back to get our dinner order but failed to mention that a number of things on the menu were sold out, so I had to come up with a Plan B on the spot. Unfortunately, my plan B was the brat burger, which was terrible (a burnt patty, in between a partially soaked kitchen sponge of a bun). This "burger" was accompanied by soggy, unflavorful onion rings. Additionally, many times throughout our experience we were waiting with empty glasses and messy hands. Did I forget to mention that we had to ask for extra napkins after our wing appetizer three times before we got them? My friend ordered the kim chi pulled pork and while he was assured that the kim chi was braised within the pork, he had to request a side because you couldn't taste it in the sandwich. I will not be going back to Hayseeds because there are much better spots to enjoy on the NH seacoast. Oh...the bathroom?...don't expect to find paper towels to dry your hands. read more

This place recently changed hands. It was our go to under the old ownership. It was a very high quality farm to table restaurant with an excellent tap last largely consisting of smuttynose beer made on premises but also with some guest beers. We've been three times recently (all since the new ownership) and been progressively more disappointed each time. Rock bottom came with their current descent into smoked meat & the surly service we experienced on our visit last night (the chef tried to help to be fair). Let's face it, nobody who knows anything about barbecue would call what they are trying to do that. They provide a lot of sauces (most of em are ok, none are great & the mustard one is inedible)but hardly any meat (menu said "chicken thighs" but they gave me exactly 1 medium sized chicken thigh) & the meat is bland. Further the beans were more like what I can make in an instant pot, they were not barbecue beans. The one improvement in the food that they made was that they brought back their original lightly battered onion rings unlike the last time we got them there when they were a thick battery mess. The one thing that was good was that what beer there was (a way, way shorter list than before both of smuttynose & guest beers) was still good quality. We'd probably go back for the beer but unlike in the past we'd skip the food and this used to be our favorite restaurant. Very sadly disappointed read more

This restaurant has so much potential. It is never very busy, which I believe is due to the menu. The menu is bizarre to say the least and will not appeal to the masses or your typical brew pub diner. It is mostly vegetarian/vegan which is fine, but they do not have many other options that you would expect when dining at a brewery. On our first visit we thought the menu was strange, but I was able to settle on a burger, which was very good. On our next visit, the burger had been removed from the menu. I asked the bartender about it and he said that it was too popular and backed up the kitchen, so they took it off the menu. Why would they take a simple, easy to make, popular item off the menu? I wish the menu was similar to its sister restaurant the Portsmouth Brewery. I live locally and every time Hayseeds comes up in conversation, the consensus is that the menu in generally disappointing and unappealing. read more

As would be expected for a brewery restaurant, the beer selections are great. The menu had plenty of variety and the food was fresh and tasty. We stopped here on our way to Maine and liked it so much we came back 2 days later on our way back home. Our server the first time was so friendly and helpful (Shannon). The food menu has plenty to choose from and the food was excellent. The property is beautiful and they have disc golf and corn hole. You could really make an afternoon of your visit if you wanted to. We'll definitely be back to do the brewery tour next time. read more

I was torn between giving three or four stars. Because the service was great I went with four. The food was hit or miss so that gets three. First the good - the onion rings were spectacular! They are crisp and salty. The roasted brussel sprouts were really good and the sauce was tasty. Others in my party said the brown butter pasta was very good. Now the not so good - the beer cheese barely taste like cheese and the crostini seemed like it was the one you can buy pre-made in the grocery store. Making fresh crostini from a baguette would have been much better. The hot chicken sandwich has potential but needed a bit more sweet to counter the heat. It was supposed to be maple flavored but didn't taste maple at all. The service was great! We had a large party of 11 and our waitress was excellent. It seems like a little tweaking and it could easily reach 5 stars. read more

Too loud! We went on a Saturday evening, 6:30 reservation. We were seated upstairs. Downstairs was full and very loud as we walked through, but upstairs was at least as loud. We thought maybe it would quiet down after a couple noisy tables of kids left, but no it was just as loud after they left. We were out for our anniversaries with another couple, so we really just focused on trying to have a good time and enjoy each other's company. The noise was so much and so distracting, that I really don't feel like I can comment on the food or the beer. When your waitress is inches from you and still gets the app order wrong because she can't hear what you are saying it is a problem. I really want to like this place, but to win us as regular customers, they need to do something.about the acoustics. Get a professional in, figure out the changes you need to do to get the sound level down to something that is not hazardous to the hearing of the employees and the customers. read more

This was a hard review to right because we had a lovely dinner but it's necessarily a restaurant that I would go back to. A: - the Smuttynose beers are great. - the outdoor dining is pleasant and relaxing. B: - the appetizers were good. The onion rings were crunchy and perfectly done. - the sauces; the whole grain mustard, aolli sauce, the apple/maple sauce were the food highlight. (Wish they served bread with dinner) C: - the food. It was good but not great - there was no Wow. 1) pork schnitzel - perfectly fried pieces of pork on a layer of lentils. Then a drizzle of apple sauce. Visually it looked great but there was no depth of flavor. It needed a condiment to bring out the flavor. 2) Jambalya - another one note entree. The house sausage was flavorful but got lost in the white rice and creole stew. 3) pulled pork sandwich. A heaping pile of pork but no wow. The Asian slaw added some flavor but both our parties who ordered this left half their sandwich uneaten. Smuttynose/hayseed have put a lot of money into creating a modern/rustic restaurant. The beers are fantastic. I just wish the food could be elevated. read more

We are regulars here and can't say enough about how wonderful this place is. It is family friendly which is key because we have a toddler and the staff are kind. We have had many wait staff but Anthony stands out. His personality is great he is interactive and kind. He made us feel welcome and helped with selections of beer . He also was kind enough to get my son some milk when he was nearing the end of tolerating being at a restaurant. Anthony is great and if you can ask for him you won't regret it! Only suggestion is to install baby changer in men's bathroom!! It is a must!!! read more

The Hayseed Restaurant is across the parking lot from the Smuttynose Brewery. The dinners we had were good (pizza and the Eggplant Schnitzel with Spaetzle and Lentils), but both seemed unremarkable. The eggplant was excellent, but a sauce would have been nice, the spaetzle was tasteless, and the lentils were bland. The flavors of the pizza were nothing special. Looking at the menu and watching as dishes come from the kitchen, this seems to be a restaurant without focus, the chef seems to be trying to hit a lot of styles and themes, without mastering any of them. read more

lunch recently, pretty old houseish place (which i'm sure it is), smallish with a longish bar, full bar with their standard smuttynose beer choices plus some guest beers, it was restaurant week so wife had a choice form that which were all great, the butternut squash soup, the seafood mix and some iced cream, i had their burger with a caesar salad, it was excellent, we had a martini which was good but small but then the bill for them was smallish too so that evens out, tried their smoked cherry short weiss which (not a real beer drinker) thought was great.......really enjoyed our lunch here.....bartendress was pleasant and helpful....nice dining area and looks like they have some outside areas also available.....if you wander over to the brewery later the entrance is on the front not the doors facing the restaurant, they need a sign!! read more

Service at the bar was absolutely terrible. I complained to the management, and nothing was done or resolved. We were told to try the restaurant under new management because it had improved. The bartender and another person were drinking at the bar. My meal was very spicy and my drink almost empty; we were asked after we finished our meal if we wanted another drink. The food was somewhat improved; definitely more choices. We eat out at least once a week, and this is the worst service we've had in a long time. Don't think we'll be going back. read more

Went for late lunch on a Monday - food was decent, but we ended up spending nearly 2 hours there. Took about 15 minutes to get seated, 45 minutes to get the food, and another 45 to get the check. Only one waitstaff was working and a few bartenders, but they seemed understaffed given the customer volume. Service as a result was very slow - had to go up and ask for the check ourselves. Hopefully will go back if they can get staffing issues figured out. read more

I went to the restaurant yesterday with a friend and we both ordered hamburgers. We ordered the meal the same time we ordered our drinks. There was a 15 min time wait for our sodas and then another 30 min for the meal. Our appetizer never came. The burgers were both horrible one came out well done and it was very very dry the other was supposed to be medium and it was actually well Done. Neither were hot. One order was supposed to be onion rings with the burger and it was served with fries. The fries were not freshly made. They were below room temperature and tasted old. The staff was young, not experienced, there obviously was no supervision. Having a good experience the first time we ate there, I recommend this restaurant to a friend. Now to avoid being embarrassed I have to call her to rescind my recommendation. read more

Was not the biggest fan overall... Did the Smuttynose tour which was fun and then went to Hayseed... You could tell they were still trying to get their routine together with the hostesses being kinda all over the place and not sure what was going on (very new restaurant)... Wait staff we had was nice but nothing amazing... I like the concept of the menu being fresh / farm to table style but found the actual taste and such to be pretty bland and nothing special and overpriced especially considering the blandness... So in a nutshell, it wasn't terrible but we won't be going back... read more

We did not eat a full meal here, just appetizers, but those apps were DELICIOUS. We got the spentgrain bread, which came with an amazing sweet and spicy honey butter as well as a tasty eggplant spread and a fruit jam. We also got the onion rings, which were genuinely, without exaggeration, the BEST onion rings I have ever had in my life! Crispy, thin, and seasoned with a delicious spice blend, they were perfectly light yet filling. The herb aioli that came with the onion rings was also to die for! The only down side: the serving of onion rings is huge so I was actually sad that we couldn't finish them. Our waitress was also super sweet and made us feel very comfortable. Overall, I will definitely be back soon (for more onion rings)! read more

I rarely write a negative review as I always give the establishment the opportunely to address any challenges, especially as an almost 30 year veteran of the service industry. I found this restaurant as a half way point to meet my sister-in-law and her family for a nice dinner, I was excited to try and the food was good, but the service left a little to be desired and the bill caught me by surprise. 1) Since they do not have a printed Children's menu, I was surprised to be charged $7 for a hot dog and fries. 2) My biggest pet peeve is being charged for drink refills, but was very surprised to see being charged for an iced tea refill? It is flavored water, the waitress said it was because it was homemade, REALLY, that itself should warrant it not being a refill charge. 3) I was also very put off by the fact that they charged me extra for a gluten-free wrap for my sandwich, I would have been OK with it if it had been disclosed, but the menu item indicated that it was gluten-free with a (GF) symbol. 4) When we explained to the waitress that the bottled Root Beer, ordered for my nephew, was very sweet and asked for a glass of water instead it took quite a long time to get the glass of water. My nephew was still thirsty and unconsciously took a sip of the root beer, just as she was finally walking back to the table a good 5 minutes later. When I pointed out to her that the root beet was still on the check, her response was "Well he drank it", to which I responded, "He only took one sip because it took so long to get his water, go check the bottle!" I found her response a bit condescending. Half way through the meal, my wife and I were discussing the fact that we would gladly come back, by the end with the lack of service, the "hidden costs", but mostly the pure lack of empathy and response to my concerns push me to write this and vow to never return to or recommend this establishment in the future. read more

The falafel sandwich was delicious. The veggie burger at the second visit was pretty good, too, but not super special or unique. Another great meal at Hayseed. My wife had the beer-soaked grilled cheese and our server Chris chose the fried chicken for me. At first I was apprehensive that the chicken was going to be too large a portion, but I was pleased to see that it was three small pieces of crunchy chicken with lots of shaved Brussels sprouts. Perfect! The 2010 Imperial Stout was simply amazing, with a finish that went on forever! We think the prices are great to, considering the quality of the food and drinks that are served. We ate outside on a somewhat cool October evening. There were propane heaters and a fire to keep the guests warm. Two times we've visited and both times we've been very happy! read more
