Great outdoor patio, food and live music. One of my favorite restaurants to visit especially in the summer and fall.

Great beer, food is good however the smoked wings are rubbery. When you smoke wings they are usually brined and if so, you should process them by smoking really long or put in a crockpot. Both of these processes break down the meat so it is not rubbery. Also, if you order smoked wings do not order the buffalo sauce. It is too hot and overpowers the smoke and wing flavor. If they're going uto serve smoked buffalo wings then they need to cut the buffalo sauce intensity by at least half, or have multiple levels of intensity. All you taste is the buffalo sauce, growing up in the Buffalo area and being the Alaskan state wing eating champion in the 80s I know my wings these were very disappointing read more

Place is fantastic, where else do you get a happy hour for three dollar Smuttynose beers from 4-6? No where! Food was good, my wife got a Grilled Cheese soaked in a porter beer cheese with bacon and onions. I got a burger with fries which was good. Onion rings for an ap were huge, enough for a family of five to share. Prices were good as well. Will definitely be back. read more

We truly enjoyed both the atmosphere and classic feeling of hayseed restaurant. First we were offered a wide selection of smuttynose beers; both smooth malty classics and seasonal unique fruity batches. I ordered the granite state destroyer and my other half, the namesake of the restaurant. Having had both out of bottles earlier in the summer the freshness of the beers from the brewer's own tap was obvious. I ordered the king mushroom special. Constructed beautifully upon a bed of fresh sprouts I was surprised and delighted with both presentation and innovation of the special, taste was no let down either. My date was less fond of his burger, and upon tasting it I unfortunately agreed that the burger while ordered medium rare had been charred as if cooked over too high a heat. The property is beautiful and our night at hayseed was a pleasant summer memory and despite the charred burger I would happily return. read more

Wonderful atmosphere, live music. Brunch burger was phenomenal with small portion of French fries. Lobster grilled cheese had minimal lobster but was only $13 so worth it. Will be back for the atmosphere mainly. read more

Wow! My wife and I stopped in to the brewery for a tour and some beer tasting. Then we headed over to the newly opened Hayseed for lunch and it was AMAZING! We got the cheese board which was a big, shareable portion for an appetizer that included a smoky raw cheddar, bleu cheese and a soft camembert cheese. These were accompanied by a red pepper jam, sweet dill pickles, an apple chutney and a few other pickled veggies. There was also a good portion of delicious crostinis. For my meal I had the pulled pork sandwich topped with a cabbage and sprouts mix! As a side the pulled pork came with homemade thin fries and homemade ketchup. it was excellent! So good! Smutty has a long history of quality beer. Their facility nestled in the woods has a great restaurant and outdoor space adjacent to the brewery. They have a full service patio with outdoor bar and live music. Friendly staff and affordable prices. read more

This was surely a disappointment. I should have probably checked with more friends before heading there for dinner last night. The experience and food was nothing to get excited about. It was a Sunday evening, on the later side....so... I ordered a cocktail, because that is what I prefer over beer. Cocktail was so-so. After that, I chose a glass of wine - to be sure I got what I wanted. For dinner, I ordered the green salad and the special steak frites. The salad had good flavor including the champagne vinaigrette. It was pretty unimaginative as far as salads go...it was simply pieces of Romain lettuce and a few micro greens. That's it...that's all. The half-size is pretty small compared to most other restaurants. I was underwhelmed. The steak frites special had so much potential. It's presentation was more imaginative. The steak came in a sizzling cast iron plan (personal size) with a sprig of rosemary, a slurry of butter and a bright handful of green beans. The frites were served off to the side in a small basket. The green beans were great and the most palatable of the dinner special. The frites were exceptionally disappointing and should have been called extra-large potato wedges - because that was what they really were. I was only able to eat the very ends of the wedges. The middle portion was a dry mealy potato that was less than appealing to me. Oh...do I long for the days of thin, long, frites...extra crispy. The steak was by far the biggest disappointment. While it had good flavor and so much potential....it was cooked to the death - essentially stripping the steak of a supple flavor that medium rare affords the diner. The bartender never asked "how" I wanted my steak...so I guess "overdone" is the default. I didn't leave starving....but I left sad and wondering if any of my friends had been here before. read more

Thought we did everything right... went straight to the website before calling to look at instructions on how to make a reservation. Followed the instructions that said to put your name on the waitlist (no other instructions on the website). The wait time on the website was about 2 hours which was fine. When we got there to check in, the three hostesses said that they would let us know when our table was available. Instead of letting us know the wait would be an additional 1 hour and 45 minutes and the restaurant would be closing in an hour we just stood there to wait thinking we would be seated before closing. We decided to leave after some time last since we wouldn't be seated in time to order food or drinks. I understand everything that's going on but as a business communication is so important. Instead we got an answer, "we are planning on adding those instructions to the website". First experience here and I'm disappointed. $100 Uber bill wasted. read more

This was my first outing to a restaurant since COVID and we were so excited! They were very clear about the 'rules' with the facemasks and using the restrooms etc. Everyone was super nice from the hostess to the food servers and waitstaff. Not giving it a 5 because the food was very good (tuna lettuce wraps and summer salad) but disappointed in the beer list and the cocktails were just OK. Having said all of this I just put my name on the waitlist for dinner!! read more

Our home brew club arranged with Smutty to have a tour followed by dinner at Hayseed. They took us in two groups on the tour then reserved their entire upstairs section for the 40 of us to enjoy a relaxed dinner with some great beers. Our server Nick handled everything with ease. Beer and food came at a great pace and we never felt rushed or forgotten at any point during the meal. They extended a 20% AHA discount to us in both the restaurant and gift shop. After a brief stint next door at Smuttynose, we trekked over to keep the beer tasting going and to fill our bellies with some much talked about food. The place was hopping, but the staff seated us upstairs very quickly. I ordered a Gravitation ale and with a 12.3% ABV, I was floating on a cloud in no time. I had the soy picked edds with mustard (delicious) and biscuits and cornsticks as an appetizer. The fish and chips were delicious. All in all, a wonderful and quaint place with excellent staff and delicious food. read more

This restaurant is amazing! As a vegetarian, I was ecstatic that the menu is almost entirely veggie, and each item is clearly marked if it is vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free. For those meat-eaters out there, they have specials with meat even though there aren't a whole lot of meat dishes on the menu. I ordered the mushroom polenta (don't remember the exact name) and it was delicious. Everyone in my party ordered a different vegetarian option and we were all pleased with our food. There were so many delicious-looking options on the menu it was hard to pick what to order! The service was friendly and the area was spotlessly clean. At 11:30 am on a Friday we were seated and served quickly; the lunch crowd was just beginning to form but when we arrived we were some of the only people there. During our meal the manager was going around asking people how their food was, which I appreciated. I ordered a flight of beer and was very happy with the variety and quality. Our waitress was extremely helpful in making recommendations and describing each of the beer options. The best was a sour blueberry beer, which I would definitely recommend to anyone who is visiting in the near future (before they change their flavors)!! Great beers, Great restaurant! We had our annual December BirthdayPalooza here, and with 10 people including two toddlers, the upstairs room was perfect! Great that they take reservations - our table was all set up waiting for us to arrive. Our waitress (Cassie) was fabulous: very attentive and accommodating to our needs as a group. We got the loaded nachos for an appetizer - one order was enough for everyone! I've always been impressed by Smutty's varied beer offerings and this visit was no disappointment... their pumpkin ale is one of the best I've had... others in our group raved over the sours, and the stouts also got high reviews. The Coffee Old Brown Dog was a special treat... delicious! Finally, we all really enjoyed our meals too. The burgers were excellent, with fresh ingredients, the ale-washed fries were a perfect accompaniment. The tacos were good, but a bit spicier than anticipated... I had to trade my great burger with my wife, since her tacos were too spicy for her... I mentioned to the waitress that they should warn people about that. All in all, we had a great time. It was everything we wanted in a birthday bash: easy to get to, great beers, delicious food, and very reasonably priced. We'll be going back soon... and definitely next December! read more

First: It's good to have Kevin Hahn back on the scene. The bad: It's kind of hard to find. So what, deal with it. It's in Hampton, so some of your clientele are, well... asses. We were waiting on two seats at the bar, the couple that held those seats had been seated, she sat, he waited to pay the tab (we're fine). He paid his tab and continued his conversation with the couple next to him. My wife finally asked if she could take the empty chair (hint, hint), he said, "Yes, I'm leaving soon." Prove it. Inconsiderate. Hampton. Par for the course. The good: Have I mentioned how nice it is to have Kevin Hahn back on the scene? The onion rings have come with him. The aoli is nice, a bit sweet for my preference, but a nice compliment. The mustard dipping sauce is phenomenal. We also ordered the corn sticks and biscuits. I could have done with butter as an add-on, but both were phenomenal. We *also* ordered the beer cheese dip. Do this. Says it comes with crackers. I *wish* crackers were like this. Order it. If you order this and the o-rings, here's a tip: Dip the onion ring in the mustard, then in the beer-cheese dip. I saw God. The beer cheese dip was cold (unexpected) but amazing. In addition to Smutty's solid lineup of beers, the have the SmuttLabs series of small batch brews. Do a flight. Don't do six like the large table that came in behind us. Bar staff never complained, but it LOOKED like a pain in the buttocks. Wait staff was professional and efficient. After we were there awhile, they also proved to be human. Had a nice (short, it was busy) chat with the bartender and really enjoyed the vibe. We split the Schnitzel, which we've been a fan of since the Pepperland days. The Schnitzel itself was awesome, but I could have used some greenery with it. All parts worked (Spatzel, Lentils and Cauliflower), with the cauliflower being the standout. I've never had bad Spatzel and this is no exception. All of the pieces worked, but on the whole, I was thirsting for some greenery (like the fried Brussels Sprouts that Kevin did at Pepperland). We were too full for dessert, but we saw some very handsome offerings pass by. We WILL be back and believe we have found our new go-to spot. As a bonus, I had joked to my wife that we could always let my cousin (who lives nearby) know to go hold some seats so we wouldn't have to wait. I looked up and who do I see? Cousin Johnny. Good times. After reading other reviews, I have to make some comments: First, the pace. Hey guys, go to Europe some time. What is your hurry? It's a brew pub. Have a beer and relax. It took longer than MacDonald's (and it should). It took longer than most similar places, but I really think that is by design. Food is meant to be enjoyed, as is the dining experience. It took "longer", but we left our house at about 3:45 PM and were home before 6:00 PM and we hung and chatted with my cousin. Relax, people -- you'll live longer. The reviewer that criticized the crackers. Perhaps Ritz is more your speed. These are house made chunks of goodness. Yes they are crunchy (crackers ARE, by definition... you do know how to get to Applebee's, right?). I can't comment on the grilled cheese... yet (that's what I'm ordering next time), but I have a feeling that the issue may have been early jitters. I know there were some staffing changes made in the early days (news travels among foodies), but we are DEFINITELY looking forward to the next trip. My girlfriend and I visited last Saturday and were beyond impressed. The vegetarian food was fantastic and the beer of course was great. For being open only a few days the staff was on top of everything. Our meals took a little long but that is too be expected being open only for 4 days. I have never gone out of my way to give a bad review, ever. However, as a professional business person I feel it necessary to do so, since there's no one at the restaurant that would handle the situation professionally and courteously. The restaurant does not deserve a rating. All I can say is that make sure you get there before 8:30 pm on the nights they close at 9pm. Otherwise you will be ignored by the discourteous bartender then reprimanded by the unprofessional General Manager. As a businessman I could not imagine having a general manager she was so incredibly rude, incompetent and downright discriminatory, I am still in awe. She has lost not only a customer of the restaurant but a consumer of the Smuttynose brand of beer. It's such a shame that all the work, effort and money put forward to make a family friendly and fun environment that it is run by a person with zero skills in customer service. It is clear that her incompetence flows down to certain employees, specifically the bartender. Again another unprofessional employee. It was clear that coming in after 8:30 for a drink was a hassle. Despite there being only 1 person at the bar he ignored us for 20 minutes, not even a menu or hello. When I finally went to find him as he was socializing around the restaurant he reluctantly gave us a menu and made it clear we needed to order as it was close to 9pm. We indicated that had he acknowledged us 20 minutes earlier and given us menus we would not have been up against the timeline. At that point he went to get the manager and the real unprofessionalism began. I will go out of my way to make sure everyone knows what an unprofessional, incompetent and discriminatory staff works at Hayseed. I cannot get beyond this and to me the quality of food is secondary. I feel Smuttynose portrays an image of down to earth micro brewery but have really failed in the hiring of the folks that manage their restaurant and ultimately represent their brand. read more

Excellent experience dining here. The brewery itself is beautiful and across the parking lot Hayseed has a fantastic atmosphere. The food was delicious all around...and for me it was particularly fantastic because they had several vegan options and the vegan pot pie was excellent. Went here with family the Sunday of the First week, which was expectedly shaky. The decor was great, and hosts were friendly. The bar staff took good care of a beverage while we waited for a table to be prepared. We were quoted a wait of 45 minutes, which turned out to be an hour. I understand that's sometimes beyond control, however we were seated at a table right next to where we had been standing, which had easily been empty for 20-25 minutes prior to is being seated. Two of our party had planned on a burger, and much to our dismay, they were all out of burgers. On a grand opening week? At a brew pub? This seems unthinkable. The waitress suggested replacing the burgers with sloppy joes. We agreed. 20 minutes go by, and mid-appetizer she came back out to tell us that they were all out of sloppy joes. She then told us that our meals were on her... Then a manager came out to tell him that we could have anything on the menu at the price of a burger... Then our server later told us that "one of your meals was taken off, is that fair?". Customer service was a little lacking, if you'd ask me. The beer was great, as expected at a Smuttynose establishment. The food was pretty decent for brew pub grub, but the shotty service definitely left a less than desirable memory. I'd recommend the mussels, but was surprised to see them listed as a meal and not an appetizer. The onion rings were also delicious. Overall, I'd be likely to give them another try in a few months... However, I expected to be rushing back much sooner than that. It was not quite the experience that I was hoping for. read more

2nd time at Hayseed, and again, it was just ok, the food disappointing. The first time we went ( last Sunday - for a beer and appetizer), we sat at the bar which was fine. Nice vibe. The beer and beer cheese were delicious, but I nearly broke a tooth on the crackers served with it - no exaggeration. When we inquired about the burger, they were out. Fast forward to Thursday, we give it a try again, and again the beer was good, but the roast beef sandwich (which had a great flavorful horseradish sauce) was so chewy and gristly, my jaw hurt and I left fat pieces on my plate. Also - no burger on the menu. Service was fine and overall atmosphere is good. All in all, Hayseed has some kinks to work out in kitchen - no doubt. The front of the house seems to be in good shape. We won't be back for a while though - hopefully 3rd time will be a charm and kitchen will be in order. read more

Awesome place to go especially after your Smuttynose tour. The menu had so many options from vegan to gluten free. I ordered the fried tofu sandwich with apple slaw and it was wonderful. Nice location. That's about it. Smutty is a staple in my home, but I won't be going back to the restaurant. I'm pretty sure our waitress was high. On hard drugs. Very awkward experience there. She kept sniffing and I don't think it was because she was allergic to my mohair sweater. She was completely flummoxed by my child's egg allergy. When she brought out the food she said we were "looking at her funny" and almost dumped my wife's mussels on the floor. Fun times. Food was definitely not great. I got the fried chicken sandwich. That was the best thing on the table. It was one of those sandwiches where the meat is so much bigger than the bun it is almost comical, and I'm not a man to complain about my meat portions. The bun sucked. My older kid ordered the fish and chips ($18 for one piece of fish). Definitely not remarkable. My poor egg allergic child was served a hot dog with no bun because our high waitress forgot what he was allergic to. My wife, the poor woman, order some mussels special with IPA, tequila and lime. I tasted one. I still regret it. It was like eating a rubber band soaked in day old way too limey margarita. Oh, and to top it off, they serve hipster ketchup. If you don't know what hipster ketchup is, then you should visit here or a number of other restaurants who think the stuff Heinz mass produces in bottles is too "low" for their clientele. Then the waitress took away my kid's fish and chips before my wife was done picking at it without asking. She needed sustenance. Waitress said "oh did I just take away the plate without asking?" Then she took the plate. I'm not a person to complain about a waitress clearing the table early. My grandpa is. My grandpa would've been PISSED. Was bizarre. I'm cheap and a $20/per person bill is not worth it here. I thought the Smutty might taste better on tap at the brewery, but I was fooling myself. I'm 15 minutes away from the brewery. It tastes the same as everywhere else I go. Sorry, Smutty. I will keep drinking the beer. read more

Very nice, rustic location directly across from the Smuttynose Brewery. Fantastic beer selection (to be expected) with a very interesting menu. I went with the ale braised beef stew and my friend went with the blue fish special. The ale braised beef was okay but could not compare to the blue fish (we ended up sharing). Our waiter was British and quite delightful. I saw several items I wanted to try so a return visit is definitely in order. Prices were great for the quality of the food. Only two issues would be the incredibly sticky floor under our table (kind of drove me nuts) and the noise levels. So loud it was hard to carry on a conversation. Definitely recommend giving this place a try! read more

My wife, Mardean, and I went to the Smuttynose Brewing Complex in Hampton on October 30, 2015, and had lunch at the Hayseed Restaurant. We were greeted cordially, and sited promptly. Melissa, our server, was personable and took our our drink order. She was very knowledgeable about the beers on tap. The menu was fairly typical for a brewery with bistro style descriptions. Now, to the food itself. The meal I had and the meal of my wife was very tasty. The food was well seasoned to start with so no extra salt and/or pepper was necessary. It is a place that the management and staff make you feel like it is a joy to have you there, and the food is quite good. So, please, go and have a good meal and enjoy the variety of on tap beers. 100% no. Host and Waitress were equal parts rude and incompetent. The food was over-priced and ill-flavored. The ketchup was so sweet, it might better be called tomato jelly. The batter on an otherwise perfectly cooked cod was thick and greasy. The muscles tasted like they were marinated in the dregs of a saltless margarita the night after a party. My son was not given a children's menu, but later was told there were options, "like a hot dog or something." I remain unclear on whether or not a children's menu actually exists. Though I will allow points for creativity (pea soup with ginger, tofu with apple slaw), The people of Hayseed should probably focus on making simple, good food and hiring knowledgable, polite staff. I'd really like to give the Hayseed Restaurant 2 1/2 stars. Came here with my husband and another couple. The building is new and very clean. The employees are all polite and friendly. Of course, the beer is very good. There are also guest drafts in addition to the Smuttynose beers. We shared a cheese platter that was delicious. My husband and I each had the potato soup which was good. But our sandwiches just weren't good at all. My husband and I each had the bratwurst sandwich. The meat was a patty (had never seen that before) and was really lacking flavor. There was a minimal amount of sauerkraut, not very good. The other couple chose pulled pork sandwiches which they said were dry. The waitress did bring some extra sauce on request. The fries were fine. We may visit the restaurant when visiting the brewery again, but we are certainly not racing back. On another note, we each got a free 7 ox. beer for sampling 4 of their beers at the brewery, a nice bonus! And there is also outside seating which looks nice to utilize in better weather.
