What a sumptuous meal! It included: lobster tail with caviar, handmade pasta with crab and uni, wild mushrooms with egg, stuffed quail and foie gras, and chocolate hazelnut mousse. The portions are generous sized and they make sure to give time in between each course so it's definitely a good 2.5-3 hr affair. The service strikes the right balance of attentive and also providing privacy and peace to enjoy the dinner. The flavors are excellent and the quality of the food is high. However, if you learn some basic words and phrases, then that will go a long way towards forming a mutual understanding that you went out of your way to visit their establishment to get some of their food in your belly. Note, the younger the wait staff, the higher the likelihood that they will speak some English. We started off with the shrimp cocktail in a sauce that wasn't the basic cocktail sauce you get in the states, but something with a little flair and small dollops of a garlic ranch cream. Different, yet tasty! SO then had the duck confit and mushroom risotto...I took a few pleasing bites of the duck, which was a 1/4 size, tasty thigh-leg, and the risotto, which had a few varieties of mushrooms and was nicely seasoned. I had the flank steak cooked medium, which was accompanied by a nice vegetable medley of potatoes, peppers, carrots and asparagus along with some caramelized shallots with bacon...a tasty and hearty dish! Overall, the service was slow, but the food was good. If I could have schmoozed the staff in French, then I'm sure the service would have been faster.

Despite this when we…read morearrived for our 8 PM dinner reservation last night the only table offered to us was probably the WORST in the entire place which included numerous outdoor spots as well. It was directly in front of and below the bar such that you could both eat dinner and drink at the bar simultaneously. Totally unacceptable. We requested a change to either outdoors or another indoor table which was away from the bar in a corner toward the front of the place. Both were instantly denied with no reasonable alternative suggested by the owner himself, short of waiting an hour for a different table to open. I understand places like to get rid of their undesirable tables but do not foist this onto patrons who have booked weeks to a month in advance! We ended up not eating there at all and went to a vastly superior spot near the FRONTENAC , LE CONTINENTAL- excellent in all aspects! Bottom line - stay away from BISTRO St- MALO- un accommodating and using totally undesirable tables so close to the bar that you may as well be drinking your dinner instead of eating it! This place is NOT recommended by me.There are numerous better choices in QUEBEC CITY with its hundreds of wonderful places to select. Who needs this type of aggravation? Zero stars from me!

Great atmosphere (we opted for indoor seating since it was rather warm out), excellent service, and food that was easily some of the best we had during our weeklong stay in the city. Definitely try the rabbit. There are a few variations available. We had the Tourte Lapin and the Rable de Lapin along with a fondue to share. Also, some great local beers and a rose cidre to quench our thirst.

Both of us opted for the table d'hôte menu, which included an appetizer, main course, dessert, and tea or coffee. We happily paid the small supplement to begin with the Duck Foie Gras served with strawberry-rhubarb jam and brioche--a decision we did not regret for a second. The foie gras was rich and silky, while the sweet-tart jam provided a beautiful contrast. For our entrées, I chose the Pulled Rabbit Poutine with devil's sauce. Comfort food elevated to another level, it was hearty, flavorful, and utterly satisfying. My dining partner selected the Cassoulet with duck sausage and duck leg confit. While the duck was excellent, it was the beans that stole the show--perfectly cooked, deeply flavored, and exactly what a great cassoulet should be. We finished with desserts: a traditional Far Breton for me and a beautifully executed Crème Brûlée for my dining partner. Both were wonderful endings to an already excellent meal. The service was warm and attentive, the ambiance charming and inviting, and the food delicious from beginning to end. Located in the heart of Old Québec, Lapin Sauté is exactly the kind of restaurant travelers hope to discover--authentic, welcoming, and serving food that leaves a lasting impression. We started with oysters from PEI and New Brunswick. Loved that they let you choose the units so we only ordered 4 (2 each). We also had as appetizer their foie gras parfait and tomatoes from our garden. Both we wonderful choices. The tomatoes were perfect for the season with a beautiful balance of tomatoes, stracciatella and focaccia. Foie is a classic and loved the grilled bread and pickled vegetables to accompany it. Our entrees were the lamb rump, braised shoulder and butcher cut steak and frites which was the hangar steak. The lamb was delicious and very hearty in a good way. The steak was perfectly prepared and the frites stayed warm the entire meal with their presentation. We ended with their house fav passion fruit pavlova. Light and airy texture with lovely flavor. We feasted on lobster, crab legs, salmon, mussels, escargots2 & the list goes on. The food was great. The buffet was always full every time we went for a refill. They had a great wine list. The variety of desert was delicious. Service was excellent, staff very professional. We had a great experience with food & service. Will definitely go back.
