First time and I'm very overwhelmed. I had a cancelation for work and this business was nearby. Newbie here, I walked in and asked another customer about the membership sign. You don't need a membership to shop here. Next step, where are the carts? They're outside in the cart corrals. I had to manually spread open their automatic door to get out. Go to cart corral, and these are not your normal grocery shopping carts. These are basically luggage carts with another shelf on top. Think motel luggage cart. OK, so you push or pull this in the store. I walked into cooler room at first. I didnt know if it's employees only or what. I walked around the aisles pulling said luggage cart. I only bought 5 things: frozen shrimp, large box of hashbrown mix, huge can of beets, a metal strainer and au ju mix. I returned to cooler room and you literally need to dodge fork lifts. At least costco ropes off their aisle. Also I asked where brisket was and was just told down the aisle. Their prices aren't much cheaper than Costco and Costco has better deals. There was everything you possibly would need for a restaurant or catering business. I saw knives were locked up after the check outs. They also check your receipt on the way out and count your stuff. I really don't know if I'd make a special trip here. It wasn't as competitively priced as Costco Business center. It was an alright experience non the less. read more

Brooklyn Park location is terrible! The store is cluttered, dirty, and smells weird. Their prices are absolutely absurd; I was considering buying this large, frosted, clear salad bowl, why was it $75 what! Then, the employees are rude as heck, half of them don't comprehend English. They were riding around on giant forklifts while people were shopping, there were pallets everywhere and people were tripping on them. The cash register areas are a joke, they're small, cramped, and inefficient. The cashiers are extremely uneducated and rude. The meat selection looks sketchy, the produce is half rotten, and the canned goods were all dented. How is this place still open!? The parking lot is so damaged you could literally fall into one of the black holes, and never be found. Just terrible, I'd give it 0 stars but that's being generous. read more

At this location, members of the public can just walk in, I'm told all other stores require a membership. This store is crazy huge and has anything one might need for a restaurant. Dishes, knives, pans, coffee pots, giant containers of spices, canned fruit, 100# bags of rice, seafood, meat, cheesecakes, fruit, veggies. Admittedly, one doesn't always need a bag of carrots the size of a small kindergartner. I ended up buying a #15 box of bacon ($2.90 /pound) and a 9# hunk of ribeye ($4.29 /pound.) I didn't quite understand the hunks of meat so I asked a meat employee standing nearby and he patiently explained my options. I mistakenly bought a box of Canadian bacon instead of bacon and the return was easy, although admittedly I should have gotten another big, bulky cart to push around rather than try to carry both boxes myself. (You can return refrigerated goods within 72 hours.) I would characterize the employees as efficient, but not particularly friendly overall. They do have a big sign stating that they will open up a new checkout lane when there's more than two or three people in line. I was about to write that in my review that the lines were too long the first time and Voila, they opened up a new line. When my cashier saw me struggling with my two boxes, she offered to have me to come around and put them on her counter while I waited for the order ahead of me. This location needs better leadership. The parking lot is a mess with carts all over and numerous pot holes. Once you make it inside, you will not feel welcome. Don't bother seeking assistance because no one cares. Be prepared to talk shitty back to the creatures that work there as that is how they will talk to you. Don't take their crap. Know exactly what you want and make your visit brief. The prices are as good as they can be for the quality of the products. The selection is good. I feel really weird being inside this store, it's like hell on Earth. St. Paul is the better location but membership is needed. Befriend someone with a membership and shop at St. Paul and life will be good. Brooklyn Center location is only open because restaurants need to shop there especially when their main deliveries from the foodservice giants are late or shorted. There are only two Restaurant Depot stores in the state of MN and unlike the St. Paul location, this one is open to the public :-) The first thing I'll say is don't judge a book by it's cover. This is a very old building (formerly a Best Buy) but once you start to walk around this place and have a better idea of just how much stuff they have, you will be amazed. The interior is a huge warehouse, somewhat similar to a Costco or Sam's Club although not quite as bright and colorful. Aside from restaurant and catering supplies, you can also purchase groceries here. They offer most items by the case so bulk discounts are plentiful, but many items are available as individual units as well. The selection is much too expansive to even mention the various categories of everything sold here. I'd suggest going to their website www.therdstore.com or just stop by here and see the warehouse in person. I'll try to compile a brief list of some of the items they have. Groceries such as: bulk canned goods, spices, bulk bags of rice, various oils, food coloring and flavorings, fresh produce, meats, cheeses, poultry, seafood, various frozen foods, desserts, juices, milk, baked goods, snacks, candy bars, and more... Supplies such as: napkin/paper towel dispensers, plastic and metal utensils, various dishes, cookware, normal household and commercial cleaning products, foodservice equipment, bar supplies, catering equipment, the list goes on and on... I thought I had a rough idea of what I'd find here, but they have soooo much more than I ever could have imagined. I certainly didn't expect them to have as many foods/groceries as they had. In the front of the warehouse near the checkout area there is even a display case with high-priced products such as caviar, saffron, vanilla bean, pine nuts, truffle oil, etc. Oh and I almost forgot to mention the staff is very kind and helpful. The woman at the front desk greeted me when I walked in and handed me a day pass since I'm not a member. She also offered to answer any questions I might have had. Later on I was looking to see if they had something specific and I asked a staff member sitting at a desk. Rather than just telling me where I could find it, he actually got up and walked with me straight to the product despite me possibly interrupting something he had been working on. I finally visited the place where my mom bought her enormous -you-could-cook-an-entire-ten-pound-bag-of-rice- pho pot. Nice find, mom. Nice. Find. Thanks to Chris K's super thorough review (write more, Chris K), I decided to take a 15 minute drive from Minneapolis to the business "where restaurants shop" so I could purchase some supplies for an upcoming party. Upon entering, I received a blue card that validated the fact that I came through the front, and pushed my long metal cart around the warehouse that seemingly had a lifetime supply of everything imaginable. #omgthisisalltheketchupicouldeverwant4mywholelife #shoutouttoditawiththishashtag A mistake would be to compare it to the likes of a Costco or Sam's Club, but it's drastically different since the main focus of Restaurant Depot is... you guessed it, all things restaurant-related! So, while my visits to other restaurant supply stores are very limited, compared to the few I've been to, this one is much bigger and has a larger selection of goods. The space is outdated and instantly reminded me of those old buildings that you would see in movies like "Coming To America" or "Robocop." But, whatever, yo, this place is very affordable with quality goods. Plus, I totally plan on updating my old pots and pans with some of the stuff there. Not to mention, the staff rocks since they're super laid back and helpful. I hope to spread the Restaurant Depot gospel to my homies, especially ones that come from families with more than ten siblings and reunions that number in the low hundreds. What a fun place for this wannabe chef to visit! As others have mentioned, this is a warehouse store for restaurants and others to purchase bulk foods and catering supplies. Things I liked: 1. No membership fee, unlike Sam's and Costco 2. You can purchase individual units for many of the food/canned products 3. They put their reduced priced items on the end of aisles for even better deals 4. They sell competitvely-priced cutlery, servingware, plates, bakeware etc. if you're ever hosting a special event, regardless of size The gigantic walk in freezer is impressive, but well, very cold. They're kind enough to provide layers for their employees but not for customers. I made sure not to stay in there that long, but if I ever planned to browse that area, I would probably dress more warmly. I don't make good purchasing decisions when I'm freezing. I wish I lived closer. I would probably take my mom with me next time I'm back! She loves to buy bowls, trays, and pots to cook meals that could feed an army. read more

I spend all my money on restaurants, so when I have an opportunity to cheap out on groceries, I'm going to take it! 1 gallon of buffalo sauce for $12 (shut up, I put it on my salads! lol), 10 pounds of quinoa for $30, 40 pounds of chicken breast for $45!! If you're willing to make the up-front time commitment to properly store non-perishables, this place can save you a boatload of money! Kind of a bummer that you can't see their weekly ad unless you're a member, but whatever (no membership required to shop at this location!!). That makes sense in terms of business strategy. I went there many times , without even being a member. I had a worker hop in and help me bring an item off the shelf, without me asking for his help. Workers there never showed me attitude. Items you find here you do not find elsewhere such as a good Kashkaval cheese made in Cyprus. Prices here are 5% to 60% cheaper than my favorite store Costco. I recommend this place. read more

I have been shopping at the restaurant depot since it's inception in Brooklyn Center, it is open due to zoning issues of the locale. It has an abundant variety of goods for restaurants and cooks that cook in large quantities, very good qualities of products, stuff moves fast at this store though. You may see one day and be out of stock the next already on certain items. It's NOT the equivalent of sams or Costco as they only have restaurant goods and a lot of stuff sams has restaurant depot does not have. The lines do tend to get long at the checkout on occasion during peak times like Saturday mid morning to earlly afternoon. But it's a great place to shop if you it doing big functions. read more

They have a decent variety of products but prices were comparable to Costco and Sams, nothing to be in awe of. Walk-in produce cooler was dim and dirty and frozen foods were covered in frost. Not a place to explore what options they have... Get what you need and get out fast or better, go somewhere else to spend your money. Employees were so amazingly rude and for some reason angry. You can tell they hate their jobs, people and smiles. I was a little slow to sign for my purchase and the cashier just yelled "sign!"... I asked an employee to help find an item and he just said he didn't know, there was no paging other employees through a walkie to help me find an item. He just didn't know and that was it but I did eventually find it. A customer bought the wrong item and was requesting a refund but the receptionist told him "no". He asked to speak to a manager and she said "Why? he's going to tell you the same thing". What a fricken adventure! My parents, for some reason unbeknownst to me, shop here and we always seem to make a trip whenever I'm visiting them. It's like Costco, but more serious and more in bulk (didn't think it was possible did you?). As the name suggests, this is catered towards shoppers with restaurants or a catering business. As such, the majority of their products are food, kitchen supples, and paper goods. They have a huge frozen department. They sell a variety of frozen meat--from regular to kosher to halal. The parking lot is typically a mess with the flatbed carts scattered around the lot. Those same flatbed carts are also sought out commodity for shoppers. My one last complaint about Restaurant Depot is the service. I simply wish the people were just a bit friendlier. read more

The worst store ever, stinks very bad. Employees are so unprofessional and very rude. Not all but most. Food on the floor I slipped 2 times. Employees are parking the forklifts in the middle of the aisle and you can't pass through. Cashiers are very rude and one of the African American cashier is a gun that you can hear her in the parking lot. Also parking is very (DIRTY) and not enough shopping carts. When you ask employees for something they tell u it's on aisle 1 or # once you find it you can't reach it and u asked for help they direct you to take a hock of of the aisle wall. The parking lot at the Brooklyn Center Store is awful to say the least. It is full of huge and deep potholes. I do not want to visit there anymore, I've cut the store slack for being dark, and staff dangerously zooming all over with forklifts. On top of that, when it's busy, you can queue for over 30mins waiting to check out, just plain ridiculous. I don't understand why I should keep giving them my business. I only gave them 1 star because Yelp requires me to rate them, they don't deserve it. Costco Business Center is way better, almost like heaven. Well lit, parking lot is great, zero potholes. The prices are also better, case in point from my visit this morning, 15lb box of goat meat cubes at Restaurant Depot is $93.41, same 15lb box of goat meat cubes at Costco Business Center is $79.35. read more

This place is horrible. If you want to check out, i hope you like waiting in line for 30 minutes!!! Once we accidentally grabbed parsley instead of cilantro, only to notice it in the parking lot. When we went to the front desk, the lady was SUPER rude. "YOU have to be a member to make returns." REALLY??? We were here 3 minutes ago. Then we requested a manager who was apparently "busy", and never came out. The employees have NO care in the world. If they could check out each customer slower, and inconvenience them more, they would. This place is a disgraceful and horrible to people. Their lack of respect to their customers is appalling. If you want to feel little and disrespected then shop here. It's not worth saving money to be treated like trash. Go somewhere else. Business owners... don't give this place business. This place is excellent to purchase bulk food. We use it for our restaurant every week. It allows us to serve large portions while keeping our prices in check! You will save money here if you are purchasing food. I think the products and prices are good. However, I will never return to Restaurant Depot due to how unprofessional and mean the service there is. I've seen stocking associate yelling at customers for asking for more meat, I've experienced 2 floor associates giving me attitudes just asking them where an item is located (and to mention that no one walked me to the product in this big warehouse), I've experienced cashiers rolling their eyes at me asking for a price check. The last time I was there, I asked a supervisor if she can substitute an item for me since their sale item is out of stock and they had the item I picked up in the place where the sale sign was at. She walked away from me, laugh and said, "Well, what do you expect? If we're out then we're out!" That's when I decided how unprofessional this place is. Regardless the good products, the bad service drove me out of Restaurant Depot...for good. I also shared this experience with the rest of my family and friends. On 2/5/2014 we went to the Restaurant Deport on 5925 Earle Brown Drive Brooklyn Center, MN at about 5:30 pm. The cashier was so slow and looked like she did not even want to be there. We paid for the food we bought and left. Later that evening I got a call from Discover Card Fraud Protection. They asked if it was me or my son, who was trying to purchase something from a Foot Locker store for over $900.00. They canceled our cards and I decided to destroy them right away but I could only find my card. We recalled that my son paid at the Restaurant Deport with his card and he never got it back. As it was too late, we went there the next day after work. We asked for the manager and a woman at the reception pointed to the other woman standing next to the register. We told her what happened but she asked us for receipt which we did not have. I told her I have that charge ($172.82) on my Discover card and could provide a bank statement if needed or they could simply check their cameras. They refused to check cameras saying that cameras didn't point to the register which is a lie because I know for sure in all retail stores there are several cameras point to registers from different angles. Then we asked if there was any other managers and she called a store manager. While waiting for him to come we noticed that the procedure at the register is the following: you give your card to the cashier because there is no any device to swipe your card and after you sign the receipt the cashier staples two receipts and gives back to you with a credit card, in our case she didn't give us a card back. When the store manager came, we told him once again what happened but he was so rude and talked to us as if it was our fault. Like the other manager he did not want to look at the cameras, he just asked us what the name on the card was and said it was in his safe. He came back with a card and when I asked him how it could happen there was a charge of more than $900.00 that night if the card was in the safe. He didn't say anything and when I asked if we got some kind of apologies he said with an attitude: "I guess I AM SORRY you LEFT your card" read more

The Restaurant Depot in Brooklyn Center is ANTI ADA! Completely non-compliant! Extremely rude & unhelpful! When I sat on my platform cart, they told me I couldn't sit there. I explained to them that I had a disability & that my legs just stopped working so I asked if they had a chair I could sit on "No, but u can't sit there!" I said well do u want me to sit on the floor? If so, i will need help getting down there & back up. She said no you can't sit on there floor. I responded "What do you want me to do? My legs don't work right now. I cannot stand right now. A cashier nearby pipes in that she just saw me walking around the store. I said yes I walk with a cane but right now my legs have become exhausted. I have to sit. The lady then told me to go get an electronic wheelchair. I said can you get one for me? I didn't see any when I walked in. She said "No, I'm. Not gonna leave my station" long story short, turned out the rude big haired blonde lady who refused to give me her name was there manager! Another lady named "fresh" oh I mean "Karie" or Katie ( she wouldn't tell me her name either just pointed at her shirt) said she was running the store at that time but also didn't do anything to provide ANY customer service. Just stood there on her perfectly working legs treating their disabled customer like a criminal for needing to sit. Absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!
