This is the best grocery store in the cities -- by far. We moved from California. Grocery Outlet is a large chain in California that is similar to Mike's -- they're a discount opportunistic grocery that sells items close to expiration/are being discontinued. When we moved back to Minnesota, we were very sad to not have Grocery Outlet anymore. But then, we found Mike's. Mike's is amazing. I'd argue it's even better than Grocery Outlet, and miles above any average grocery store in the cities. The primary draw to Mike's is the pricing -- things are very cheap compared to other grocers. This is possible because they don't have a broad selection and stock items that are close to expiration or being discontinued. It's not uncommon to find things that didn't sell at other stores here. The downside is that they rarely have consistent stock. However, if you have an open mind, you won't be disappointed. This grocery store is a hidden gem. It's actually been here as long as I can remember. They have a great selection of produce and dairy on a consistent basis. Some of the items have met or exceeded the Best Buy date but we all know those dates are generally just a suggestion. I've never had any issues with anything I've ever bought. The prices are also so low you really can't go wrong. The best deal I ever came across here was 12 dozen eggs and 12 pounds of bacon for $50. My Roommate and I split this and it was so worth it. The cereals, crackers, etc are kind of a hit or a miss all depending on what they have in. The paper goods and household type products are similar to big box stores as far as price so I tend to bypass that area. The whole store is worth going through because you can find some hidden deals. I'm obsessed. Mike's Discount Foods changed my life. I used to visit the Hilltop one since it's near my house before I realized the Fridley location is massive and has better deals. I go once a week if I can to see what they have, stuff is usually always changing but on occassion you can find the same thing twice. Staff is fine, some are great and some you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley (I've heard some yelling from the back room at times). They've added Target bins in the back with $3 new items (clothes, toiletries, accessories and housewares sometimes). Truly magical. read more

If you're up for a little scavenger hunt to find deals, Mikes is the place to go. The model of this store is that larger retailers provide excess orders or near or past prime foods and products for sale. You're likely not going to complete all your grocery need shere but they do have lots of shelf stable, dairy, produce, frozen and some meat options. Sometimes we get lucky and find super deals (like Gluten free cookie dough or Talenti gelato for $1.99) but other times the prices aren't screaming deals or are on food that likely needs to be consumed within a day or two, if at all. The best way to describe this place I think is "The good will of food." Sometime I find amazing deals with products that have not yet expired or only recently expired. Other times I find the prices are not far off from a regular store. You just have to go searching for the deals because they certainly exist! Watch the produce! You can find produce here that is not expired or moldy but you do have to search for it. Understand you are not coming here for any type of aesthetic, you are here in search of good deals! With food prices rising, this can definitely be a good place to come to find some cheaper foods. Inventory is always changing. They are allowed to sell items that have expired but there are also plenty of items that have not yet expired. A protip is to come on Tuesdays! They take 10% off the total bill! I happen to learn of this store from a friend's post on Facebook! It is April 2020 and we are in currently high quarantine season for the Coronavirus...schools, gyms, libraries, museums, theatres, churches, malls,,, everywhere that assembles people are closed. Grocery stores have limited shopping hours and limited items. Although I try to keep myself and my family quarantined, I still need to go out to get groceries and necessities. Disposable gloves are one of the necessities these days... and it is currently sold for a $1 for a box of 100...what a deal and find! At Mike's Discount Foods, not only did I find disposable gloves, but fresh vegetables, fruits, and grocery items for a very, very low price. Wow! This place is hit or miss. Mike's is an ultra-discount grocery store, so things that you're looking or hoping for may be in stock, temporarily out of stock, or long gone. Things come and go. Aisles are sometimes crowded with stuff in the middle of them, making it hard to navigate. When it's on, you might end up buying way more than you were hoping to. When it's an off day, you might end up walking out without buying a single thing. We've experienced both. Deals are quite good. As others have mentioned, you might be buying expired goods. Apparently, they're allowed to do this, for legal reasons beyond my knowledge, and it's not a bad thing either. Sometimes, things have recently expired and at other times, you find things that might be expired by several months. Use your judgement. If you're not sure, don't buy it. The most predictable section of the store is the produce, believe it or not. They try to carry a regular selection of fruits and vegetables at decent prices (they might not be super bargains). That said, things there change as well, according to the season. Overall, it's an A-OK place. I have trouble recommending it only because it's so variable and you might not be happy on any given visit. If you understand that, then do give it a try or several! read more

For being what it is, I give Mike's 4 stars for so many of the deals that we've found here. First of all, lower your expectations and go in knowing that this place is not going to be as nice as an Aldi or even the Dollar store with looks or selection. Mike's offers constantly changing items that are close to expiring or have recently expired. The produce must be looked at carefully or eaten/frozen by the next 1-2 days. Strawberries, blueberries are great for prepping and freezing for smoothies (sometimes they'll even have organic!). If you're on a particularily tight budget this is the place to go and you may be able to do almost all of your grocery shopping here. Otherwise, I would recommend just going in to take a look around for any good deals as a supplement to your regular grocery store. This place is not for everyone. There are days when I can walk out of the store with nothing or with a cart full of items. Besides food/drink items they also have cleaning products, bath items, small selection of older flowers, and other random things. The cashiers are very nice. The latest good deal my husband found was Annie's organic chocolate chip cookie mix for $1.50/box (Target sells them for $4.99). We got 8 boxes since they don't expire for a couple months! read more

I love Mikes Discount Food. You can feed a family of 6 on less than a full time job if you need to . First off the food at Mike's is close to or at sell by date food. Keep in mind that the sell by date is something that is almost made up arbitrarily by manufactures. There was just a bill in congress to ban all sell by dates. I got a 50 pound box of organic name brand bananas for $5, they were ripe but great. I always get great deals and come away at 80-90% off traditional grocery store prices. I know how to shop food and what will spoil and what will not. I also freeze a lot and we eat food fast in my house. I am a Vitamix guy and there is no better place to get fresh organic things to blend at a great price. I suggest Mikes to anyone looking to save a lot of money and who knows how to shop. You don't walk in expecting to get everything on your list but if you shop the deal you will walk out will a full cart for under $80. read more

Miss has a wide variety of food. Some of it is expired, and some of it isn't. The prices don't always coincide with that, so it's worth checking! Since there is a wide variety of foods here, you never know what they'll have in stock. For a long time we went in for things they had regularly, such as Lacroix waters and fake meats. I haven't seen either of those in a while though! It's a good idea to check here often if you are looking for a good price on foods. I personally shop here because they are a reseller, and I like to minimize food waste. Grocery stores can be very wasteful of the foods they don't sell. I would give them 5 stars but I wish there were a way to find out about new deals without driving there. Also, they have a tendency to close early. I've arrived over 10 minutes before closing, and the doors were locked. I'm a big fan of businesses staying open for their posted hours! read more

This is a great place to get great deals on over stock food, close outs and pallets left behind. With better deals then Aldi's. I just want everyone know that their are some undesirable of employee's working there, like Tony who is some kind of manager, his swearing and loud voice is irritating. If Aldi, a dollar store and walmart had a kid, Mike's discount foods would be the child! Full of unique characters, has a little of everything, a little run down, but you can't beat the prices. I recommend going in with pretty low expectations and just think about how much money you'll be saving! It's July and I found a solid amount of Christmas/holiday items. Brand name tin of nuts for $3. Peppermint knock off brand Oreos 2 for $1, and I LOVE peppermint so was excited I won't have to wait until Christmas to get my fix of peppermint! Most food is close to expiring or past it's 'best by' date. I surprised myself with how little I spent there. I found 'past best by date' bag of my favorite candy, it was 15 cents for standard small bag of candy. I'll take it, even if they aren't as fresh as I'd like! I also found one of my favorite snacks there for $1, and the aldi's version of the snack is a $1.50 ish, so I bought 6 bags, cause I know those will be gone by the end of the week. I'm not a huge meat eater, but people were buying LOTS of it. I did find a whole contain of brand name ice cream for $1! and 2 packs of brand name butter for $1! Again they were past their best by date, but they'll just be living in the freezer till I use them. If you're on a tight budget, I'm definitely recommend you go here! They have the standard frozen food items, cleaning products, produce, meats, baked goods, etc. If you're picky about quality of food/sell by dates/etc DON'T GO HERE! If you're just looking for food and don't care if it's a week past it's sell by date, GO HERE! I've been to Mike's Discount Foods in Fridley, Coumbia Heights and Anoka, and there IS a difference. Hands down, the Fridley location wins for selection and for staff friendliness. Veggies, fruit and dairy are the best buys, seasonally you can score huge (especially beneficial if you have a large freezer). Mike's foods are usually close to expiration or peak, choose carefully if buying fruit -- the upside is if used immediately, the ripeness is perfect, no waiting required. If waiting at all to consume, you do risk losing your fruit purchase within days, knowing that going in makes a difference in the overall experience. If you find something you like, best to buy it now because the stock is continuously changing and it may be gone within days. This store is amazing. I don't understand why all the mixed reviews on here.....this is a discount reseller grocery store people!! You can't go here and expect to do a full shop like you would at Cub or Lunds....this store has what it has on the days it has it. It's like a treasure hunt of incredible bargains. My next-door neighbor, K told me about Mike's about a year and a half ago. I go there almost every week even though I live 12 miles away. I don't call it Mike's though. I call it the adventure grocery store! It is not a glamorous place, so what. You never know what you might find. I have gotten wonderful, fresh fruit at great prices and tried new foods from fancy companies at a reasonable price. Some items are at or close to their expiration but not everything and they have large boxes at the back of the store with overstocks from other stores with everything from pain reliever to sunscreen and after sun lotions also at incredible discount. Two employees really stand out. They are Suzy at cash register one most of the time and Edward who does just about everything else. He's stocking, cart wrangling you name it. . All you people are idiots! Mike's Discount is totally amazing!!! Especially on Hilltop! The people that work there are awesome, friendly, and exceptionally helpful!!!!! The manager Keith and the other guy Jerry or Jory (whatever his name is) are way cool and funny! I think I save as much money as I spend on gas in a year shopping at Mike's Discount on Hilltop! They have amazing deals, their produce is nearly always delightful! Great selection of products from grocery to frozen and of course produce. CLEAN, every time I go there, the store is always clean! I also reviewed the Columbia Heights store of this chain.(avoid it). But this branch/store is much better. The staff friendlier and the store seems a tiny bit cleaner (not by much though) than the store at 45th Avenue NE. Here the deals are better. There is much more selection as this is a larger store. Frozen foods, dairy and produce seem to be buyable and eatable within reason. Never have had a problem if watching carefully what you purchase. Considerable savings on some items recently ( spices, fresh mushrooms, yogurt, frozen chicken tamales. Most canned goods is off brand. Many of the major brand items(discontinued items or flavors that didnt sell well) are one of a kind that you wont find at the regular store Items tend to move fast here. I have found something I liked and gone back a couple days later only to find it sold out. So buy accordingly. Items tend to be one time deals as items are being discontinued or hitting an expiration date (Mike's gets items that other grocery stores or suppliers want to unload) Downside, some items turn out to be of poor quality taste wise, No refunds only monetary allotment towards another purchase. And bad sticker pricing (cant figure out from the sticker what the actual price is), not all items marked with signage. Long lines on Senior Discount Day (tuesday) Only one cashier. First time at Mike's. A friend said they had white tea, which is hard to find in stores. There was no white tea. I realize items come and go. Many name brand items, even Annie's organic. I had just purchased Shoppers choice white vinegar (gallon) at Cub for $2.39. Mike's had an even lesser name brand at $2.99! You definitely need to know your prices on things. We bought 2-5 oz bags of Planters mixed nuts for $1.49 each. Not so sure this was a great buy. I don't think I will ever stop in at Mike's again. It also is not super clean. Sometimes it's a bit of a crapshoot if you'll find anything good or not, but I usually find stuff like (vanilla flavored) Coconut Silk™ (yum!) for like $1.50, or packages of chicken breasts for a few bucks, etc. Yesterday I spent like $15 and came home with four bags of food. This is a five star experience. Yeah some of it isn't great but then don't buy it. There is always a killer deal on something. We live five hours away and always stop if we have time. Best idea is to go across the street to Bob's and make a salad first. It's not cheap but it's fantastic! That way you aren't starving when you are looking for that second cart to fill up! At mike's you will find fruit for 1/3 the price and there will be some kind of meat that's so inexpensive you can't pass it up. Just because the date is expired doesn't mean it's not good. read more

I'm a senior and go to Mikes a lot..I was on some of the county boards that worked with different agencies that worked on putting code dates on merchandise so consumers would know how old food is {Code dates/sell buy or best used buy dates}. This is just to let you all know how long it's been in the stores.. years ago when I was raising my boys by myself I did not have much money.. I had to buy from small mom and pop stores.. The small stores would by from big stores.. and sometime the cereal and other foods would be there a long time.. sometimes you would take it home and it would be buggy... code dates are information to customers.. You can still use flour as long as it is not buggy.. most flour and cereal products are wrapped in plastic wrap this keeps bugs out... Milk __ I check every day after sell by date when I buy milk and have in refrigerator. As far as discount food stores go this is the best, better than Aldi's in my opinion because EVERYTHING at Aldi's contains some form of sugar and/or MSG (note, these ingredients have a dozen or so different names, just to confuse the consumer). I was at the Fridley location and got a lot of staple items and snacks for $33. I am certainly going to shop here for certain things like cereal, chips, and other cupboard stable foods. I like that they carry organic and non-gmo foods. I am a stickler for avoiding artificial flavors, colors and preservatives. read more

To quote Gump's mom- This store is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you gonna get. This is not for those who like one-stop shop as it does not carry a wide selection of produce/meats. The inventory and stock varies a great deal. But on the other hand it does offer excellent savings on whatever stock they do happen to have, if you don't mind an extra stop here once in a while. Most items are competitively priced and past their magical "best by" dates, but there are a few gotchas. I found croutons and BBQ sauce for more than the store I usually buy them from. So know your prices if you shop here. Also, I don't like that their receipt don't itemize the items purchased. I've shopped there five times so far and two of those times I was overcharged (only by a little). That is because itmes are not scanned but entered manually by memory, which is very error prone (and mostly not in our favor). Also the store does not accept any coupons.
