This was a first for me but I absolutely loved it! @gallopinto.ga is located across from Poor Richard's off Cleveland Highway and is owned by a local family who was kind enough to invite me into their space and let me try their favorite dishes. If you are wanting to sample their menu, I highly recommend getting the Caballo Bayo. They have a 2 person or 4 person option and it comes with a little bit of everything! There is fried cheese, chicharrones, sausage, Churrasco steak, chicken, eggs, fried plantains, sweet plantains, and so much more. You can't forget to order the Fresco de Cacao! Great little spot with delicious food! The ambiance could use a little love but I know they are new. Maybe some music? Our server was nice. I had the tamales which came with fresh bread and a coffee (YUM). My husband had the Cubano sandwich and said it was unlike any cuban he's ever tasted but really liked it. Just a heads up - ordering a side of fried plantains is actually plantain chips. We'll definitely return to support this local business. Maybe will try a dessert or breakfast next time! read more

Tried El Gallo Pinto today for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance was pleasant with tables that looked like something that you'd see in a Latin grandmothers kitchen. Felt very "homey." I ordered the Pollo Asado and my husband ordered a side of fried yuca to start and Carne Asada for his meal. I also just have to mention that I ordered lemonade thinking it would be something like Minute Maid. Oh no! It was fresh squeezed limeade! It was SO good! The fried yuca came out, hot and crispy. The meal portion sizes were generous and both myself and my husband enjoyed our dinner. You also have the option to get breakfast items anytime of the day. All in all we'll definitely be going back. I saw the story about the new restaurant in the Gainesville Times and did some online research on Nicaraguan food. The waiter was helpful in explaining menu items as well as providing background when certain dishes are typically served. My wife and I had Nacatamales (tamales) and Caballo Bayo for two (which provided a generous sampling). The spicy pickled onions were delicious and not too spicy. The steak was flavorful. I highly recommend pairing the fresh avocado with the chicken. The pork was a tad salty for my liking. The fresh bread was amazing. I had skipped lunch, but we had a full box of leftovers. I had a delightful Arroz con piña (pineapple rice pina colada/pineapple horchata). They don't yet have a liquor license so I wasn't able to try a Toña beer. Give this place a try.
