    Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen
    Nikki U.

Super local homey vibes here. I feel like this place has great food, but maybe we just ordered the wrong items. I got the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen and my boyfriend got the pork chops. The ramen had two big sliced os pork, half an egg, and fishcake. The broth was nothing amazing and it did lack that rich tonkotsu broth. The pork chop has really good seasoning and was fried which gave it a crispy skin that I really enjoyed. Although it was very flavorful, the pork was overcooked and dry. If I lived in Hilo, I would probably come here again as a nice casual dinner/lunch spot.

Super cute family style restaurant serving various plate lunches (yes, we were there for dinner but that's what you call it) & homemade desserts! We've been here twice now and service has always been pretty quick. Fyi, parking is limited to street plus the lot to the left of the restaurant if you're facing it. So far, we've tried, their fried pork chops, Korean chicken, chicken cutlet, roast pork, ten zaru, shoyu ramen, brookie & apple crisp Ala mode. All super homey as expected in a small restaurant as such. Nothing super significant that stood out but overall 8/10.

It was a super cozy and fun dining experience with my friend - got a couple different things throughout the night, but I do remember that the desserts were some of my favorites to see and taste

The portion sizes are more than enough for two people -- honestly, every dish on the menu could easily feed two. Their desserts are absolutely divine. I had the Apple Crisp Crumble with vanilla ice cream, and it was so good I didn't even get a picture before finishing it -- that's how delicious it was! Definitely worth it. The service was great too. It was crowded, but that's to be expected from a restaurant serving such tasty dishes. The ambiance is just okay -- the building looks a bit old and rough -- but the food more than makes up for it. For me, it's a solid 10/10!

Deep-Fried Pork Chop, Salmon, and Fried Chicken (Appetizer)

The Deep-Fried Porkchop was one of the best single bites of pork I've ever had in my life. The breading is crispy but underneath the pork is extremely juicy. It's a huge portion (can share between two people easily) and it comes pre-cut so you don't have to deal with the bone as you regularly would with porkchop. I also ended up dipping the pork into the oriental salad dressing which gave it a nice soy / citrus kick. The chicken and salmon were also great choices!! Will definitely be back.

I remember being sad about something, but I wasn't sad about it anymore after eating here. Restaurant is super home-y in a way and it was pretty lively when we were there. It was pretty packed, but the vibes were chill. Don't remember what the plate is called, but definitely get their katsu. Anything with katsu in it will most likely be delicious (and worth it). Juicy cutlet with a nice breaded crunch. We also ordered a bowl of ramen - soup really hit the spot. Would be more than happy to order either again.

Booth seating was perfect for us. The wait staff were super nice and patient with us. Their menu is huge and has a lot of options for customizing. Fortunately, there are diagrams on the wall to help you decide. I got a Miso Standard ramen ($20 with an Ajitama (seasoned soft boiled egg), hard texture, fried garlic, extra noodles. It was fabulous! Really hit the spot. Loved the chewier noodles and the rich, flavorful broth. DH got THE Garlic ramen ($26.50) also with an Ajitama, pork belly, and extra noodles, regular firmness. The kids wanted extra Naruto (fish cakes), 75 cents for 2 small pieces. One of our kids is under age 5, so we got a Miso mini ramen ($9.50 value) for free! Wow! Little one said he did not like the flavor of the seasoned egg. Noodles were very soft, but stayed together, and soaked up a ton of broth so they were flavorful. He said the Miso Mini comes with corn instead of fish cake. We loved all of the toppings. The pork belly was excellent! Portion sizes are great. We had some leftovers to take back. Overall, a fantastic place to satisfy those ramen cravings!

The worker was nice about it, but because they don't have a website, how were we supposed to know? We also usually try to make reservations ahead of time, but because there was no website, we figure it's a first come, first serve kind of spot. That's our bad for making that assumption, but now that I'm reading other Yelp reviews, this seems to be a years-old customer service issue. But it makes sense, since exclusivity seems to be part of the business plan (i.e. small/limited seating, reservations only). Must be working for them. Didn't work out for us though, at least in the moment. So even though we didn't try the food (I'm sure it's likely amazing), it sucked to make the drive out here. Pro tip: call first --months ahead before you plan to go here and make a reservation! After just reading some of the reviews, I learned you can do take out but must order ahead of time. Not sure how much more ahead of time. So calling would also be a good idea here. Honestly, the amount of work to just get info, a reservation, and ultimately a meal here is starting to feel cumbersome. I'm not sure I'd want to try making the effort again. We did turn a lemon situation into lemonade and instead had dinner at Ken's House of Pancakes, and they never disappoint! Had we eaten at Takenoko, we would've missed out on Ken's oxtail stew, which was listed as part of the day's special menu items, and it was one of the best meals we've had in Hilo. So, it all worked out.

Highly recommend the kalbi plate. I usually eat kalbi with rice but you can opt for fries instead, and omg it is an amazing combo that I never knew I needed. Some of the most tender and tastiest kalbi I've ever had with the crunchiest fries. Even if I tried to recreate this combo elsewhere, I know it won't hit the same way. The stack of mac nut pancakes is huge and very shareable. I prefer this over the coconut pancakes. Actually, just ignore the coconut pancakes. The day we came, the mac nut pancakes came with a whooping serving of butter. Paula Deen, was that you? I also like that you can have all the haupia, guava, and lilikoi syrup you want too. They're all delicious. The coffee servings are also generous. You get a whole carafe to yourself. Also check out their specials of the day. If they serve the oxtail stew, get it. Get it!! It's hearty, savory, and feels comforting. In terms of service, you're not getting top notch service. It's a diner! So you're getting diner service, mostly from aunties who know what they're doing. Service is just right. I think those who complain about it are probably those who are unfamiliar with the slower pace out here. Relax! In terms of vibes, this truly feels like a diner from back in the day. The oldies music playing throughout the day and the warm orange mid-century-esque booth seats feel like you're back in time, but the art work on the walls focused on local life also make you feel like you're in present-day Hilo. I don't know any other place that can do that. Do you? For wrestling fans, check out the framed photos of wrestlers, some signed, in the front part of the restaurant. What I love most is that Ken's is a local spot, and yes, tourists are welcomed. But there's nothing pretentious or gimmicky about this place that tries to cater solely to tourists. It's got its own distinct culture, with amazing food, and great vibes that can't be replicated, and I think that's why I'll always keep coming back.
