In a word: Oishi! (Delicious!) Which explains why the place gets packed at mealtimes, and why takeout flies out the door. A wide variety of simple Japanese dishes, with something for everyone, including vegetarians. The dining room is cozy, but tables turn over fairly quickly. Even when they are busy they manage to crank out the goodies in good time. Generous portions of comfort food. My oyako donburi was wonderfully warm and filling, and my friend enjoyed her tempura udon. Parking around the front, side, and in back. Could be easy to miss, as it is a modest place in a business neighborhood, but they have a big sign. A few steps in front but there is a ramp (park in back). There's a restroom on the premises. On our trip to Haleakala, we were craving Japanese Ramen so we found a place on the route. It is near the airport on the industrial side of town. It is small and quaint where you order at the counter and sit down. The vibe was definitely casual. A lot of locals dropped by when we were there. We ordered udon, tempura ramen, oyakodon, and cold ramen. The food was good, more comfort food than compared to a specialty ramen place. I can honestly say this place NEVER disappoints! I've had a variety of their foods that they offer and everything is super yummy! Normally restaurants may slip up every once in awhile but not here. I do recommend calling ahead to order if you're on a time limit. The space only offers a few tables and it can be calm one second and the next every table is full, there's a line to take orders, and the one aunty cashier is doing taking orders in person and on the phone while the kitchen continues to pump out food. I haven't gone here for over 10 years, why? I have not idea. I've been missing out on the best tempura and udon. Ordered the tempura udon, broth was yummy and loved the chewiness of the noodles. The tempura was perfectly cooked, shrimp was not overdone. The tempura sauce was not your ordinary bland sauce! It was onolicious. Finally took the time to try this place and it did not disappoint! Got the bento special for the day which included nigiri, shrimp tempura roll, croquette, fried oyster, shrimp spring roll and Arabiki sausage. Everything was soooooooo delicious! My favorite was the shrimp tempura roll which also had a healthy amount of avocado in it which put it over the top! You can this is a favorite lunch spot because it was very busy on a Tuesday. Pay up, and choose a table. We went at 11am and there was a lot of available tables. Once the clock hits 12, the 8 tables with four chairs were all taken. So if you're planning to go there for lunch and dine it, go before 12pm. While eating , most of the customers were speaking in Japanese which made it feel like I was in Japan. We were out on this side of The island we got hungry so instead of going back 45 mins to our resort to cook something we stopped here at Restaurant Matsu. This seemed to be a local spot, working people coming in for their break or just getting off of shift. There was a line to order food when we first arrived so we got the last table in the resturant, it's small & they only have about 7/8; 4 tops. The line continued as we ate...what does that tell you...good food! Which The food was very good I made sure each of got something different. All the dishes we tried were tasteful & filling. Be prepared if you order extra Mac salad for an extra $3 of a 1/4 cup. I was with my coworker this past Wednesday, and he mentioned to me that the ladies at Bank Of Hawaii come here for da grindz sometimes, and he said that the food looked good......... Restaurant Matsu is a little hole in the wall joint...........kinda looks like I'm going to my auntie's house for a meal. Lol! As you walk into this little wood shack of a house, there is an ordering counter where you walk up to order your food. Everything here at Restaurant Matsu is "cafeteria" style.........how it works is - you place your order of food, find an open table, then get your utensils, napkins, & water. When you food is ready, someone will come out and call your number & deliver the food to your table. The restaurant itself is real small..........I wanna say they had about 10 tables or so? (Sorry I didn't do an exact count), and the menu is layed out pretty simple.............. I also noticed on their menu they had pictures, so that it could help you decide on what you're jonesing for. The day when I came with my coworker for lunch, I decided to order - combo "D" - where I got 3 pieces of Yakitori Chicken, 1 piece of Vegetable Croquete, & 2 pieces of Shrimp Tempura. ($9.00). Each combo meal came with rice & you had a choice of mac salad or tsukemono . My coworker ordered combo "C" - where he got 5 pieces of Chicken Katsu & 2 pieces of Shrimp Tempura. ($9.00). What can I say about the grub? I thoroughly enjoyed my meal! The shrimp tempura & vegetable croquete came out hot & fresh! The fried items did not taste oily at all.............fresh, light, & hot! Just the way I like my tempura. The yakitori chicken was also delicious, as it was marinaded perfectly! My coworker also mention how he liked his chicken katsu & shrimp tempura, as both fried items tasted so light & fresh. If I could only wish for one thing about my meal..........I wished they gave a little more food, as I left the place still a wee bit hungry. But no matter, I shouldn't be eating so much fried stuff anyways! Lol! Would I come back here to try more items? Five stars for creativity on the local Hawaiian Cuisine. I was visiting home and my cousin wanted to introduce me to the innovative and creative spam musubi at Restaurant Matsu. We ordered three kinds of spam musubi: First was the Spam-Katsu musubi. The spam is made just like tonkatsu - dipped and battered with panko and deep fried. I liked the extra added crunch to the spamkatsu. Grade: B+ Second was my favorite - the mochiko (chicken style) spam. The spam was dipped in a batter seasoned with shoyu and garlic, and was deep fried. I ate two of these bad boys and could have easily eaten another 12. ONOLICIOUS! Grade: A Third was the Spam-Kara'age musubi. It was battered and deep fried. Crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Fun to eat. Grade: B+ Why the five stars? I've been coming to Matsu's ever since they were located in the Maui Mall (where Thailand Cuisine is now.) I'm sure they're happier in their new digs as they don't have to follow mall hours & rules and probably have a cheaper rent. ATMOSPHERE: Divey, dinky little wooden building in Kahului Industrial Park. Signs abound for every pet peeve of theirs. It's a self-service restaurant, so order at the counter, have a seat, and the food is delivered. The customary request is to take all your items to a cart near the counter when you're done, like a cafeteria. The only thing I don't care for is that they use a lot of styrofoam and disposal plastic products for dine-in service. Such a waste! MENU: Ramen, udon, soba, don bowls, sushi, local plate lunches. FOOD: Shoyu Ramen This is what started me on my ramen rage, circa 1990. It was my very first shoyu ramen experience. The broth is a traditional dark shoyu, with a hint of ginger. The noodles are thin and chewy, but no eggy flavor which I love. Toppings are fishcake, green onions, and a razor thin slice of charsiu. Honestly, the best-tasting shoyu broth on Maui, but it's just a tiny bit too small in portion size for me. It could also use more topping options like a soft egg and bean sprouts. Tempura Ramen This is my favorite dish here. It's served with the shoyu broth which is dark and savory, with thin noodles that are always cooked perfect. It comes topped with green onions and fish cake. The fresh tempura consists of two shrimp, green beans, sweet potato and eggplant. My only gripes are that the portion size of the ramen is a bit below average, they don't give enough broth as you are constantly trying to ration it while eating, and it doesn't come with any charsiu. The tempura makes up for the small amount of ramen. That shiny 5th star is close but oh so far. Miso Ramen I tried this on a whim, being that my ramen palette has expanded to more than just shoyu, especially when dining off of the rock. I've had a tasteless version at Ramen Ya, but this one has a very good & strong miso flavor, and perfectly cooked noodles. I didn't care for the generous amount of sliced white onions that are apparently part of the broth. Other odd toppings were carrots and won bok, but unfortunately no bean sprouts. There was a half boiled egg which wasn't fresh as the yolk had the gray ring on the outside. I don't think any Maui establishment knows how to make that to-die-for soft egg. If you've found one, please let me know! Overall, I love miso soup and miso butterfish, but miso ramen is just not a favorite of mine. California Roll Nobody comes close to a flavorful Cali roll like these folks. The vinegary rice, fresh avocado, cucumber and mayo mixture just melts in your mouth. Another plus is that you can buy these in as little as 3 pieces to accompany your lunch. Spicy Ahi The 6 small pieces were very fresh, but I didn't care for the spicy sauce as I could taste Tabasco in it, rather than being a creamy sriracha. I'd rate it a 2 on a 5 heat scale. Priced nicely at $4.50. RESERVATIONS: Not taken. The busiest times are weekday lunch hour. They probably do equal amounts of dine-in and takeout. SERVICE: Staff are friendly and food service is quick. They recently changed their cashiering system, and now paying by credit card no longer brings up a tip line. Why is there be a tip line for a self-service restaurant anyway? TIPS: Plate lunch portion sizes are on the small side. Call ahead for takeout as they can get pretty busy at lunch with all the other businesses nearby. FACT: They used to own Izakaya Matsu in Kihei but sold the business. I think one of our best take-out meals in Maui. Pretty affordable food, spent about $110 for a family group of 7. Huge menu of bentos, ramen, udon, sushi, etc. Highlight was the FOUR types of spam musubi. Even though it was too much of a curiosity to NOT try it (I was a little skeptical), my 3-hour cold (the driver always eats last) karaage spam musubi was deliciooooouuuuus. I also had the cold noodles which were yummy. The rest of the food was devoured before my turn to sit down and eat, so I assume it was satisfactory. It has been nearly impossible to find great udon on Maui but Restaurant Matsu has done it! I've lived on Maui my whole life and I've never been inside the cute little "white house" on Alamaha until a few days ago and I am glad I did! First, let me start with their California roll! It's cheap, simple and flavorful! The crab is very creamy and the rice is perfectly sweet. It's nothing extravagant but it's delicious local style sushi. Secondly, get the fried chicken! When I think of fried chicken I think of so many other things I'd rather have but this is not your typical "overly battered chicken" that you can get down the road. It is savory and juicy chicken in a gently seasoned batter, more similar to tempura then KFC's rock hard outer crisp. Now on to the udon, the star of the show ! I got the curry udon and I was very impressed. The curry broth was thinner than I've had elsewhere but it was flavorful without being overly salty. The noddles were chewy and fresh. It is a fairly simple dish that they execute so well. Do yourself a favor and step inside the "white house" and experience for yourself the clean and quaint homestyle Japanese restaurant on Alamaha. The "beef plate" sounds boring but it really hit the spot with vermicelli, tofu, cabbage, carrots, and sweet sukiyaki flavour. Tempura came fresh from the fryer, not overly battered which I appreciate. Hours of business are not accurate on Google and I'm not sure if they're accurate here. We visited at a very random time (roughly 4pm) and the restaurant was open. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for quite some time and finally got an opportunity last week, during my trip to Maui. Located in an industrial area in Kahului, it's a quaint little place. The wood building houses a small restaurant with limited seating, but packs a lot of flavor. It's a "self-service" restaurant, so you review the menu (or look at the picture book at the counter), grab your utensils, they deliver your meal and you clean-up after yourselves. My family and I enjoyed our lunch items consisting of Saba Shioyaki, Fried Noodles, Salmon Teriyaki, Chicken Katsu Curry and we also had a side order of Katsu and Mochiko Spam Musubi's. My Saba was cooked perfectly and came with one large scoop of rice and a scoop of mac salad. My wife really enjoyed the fried noodles, one of my son's said the Salmon Teriyaki was ono and my other son said he'd order the Chicken Katsu Curry again, which says something. He orders Chicken Katsu Curry a lot, so that's high praise. The Spam Musubi's were a nice compliment to our meal. My sons felt the quantity of food could be a bit more, but that might impact the prices, which are very reasonable. I was fine with the amount of food and feel it's a good deal for lunch or dinner. My go to spot when I'm alone and want to have a sit down lunch. I wish I had a group to go with, but for now I'm content eating my way through the menu with recomendations from my fellow yelpers. Cool weather calls for soup, I like the Miso Ramen or Tonkotso Ramen ( if they have it on special) or the Tempura Udon. If I'm getting Ramen I like that I can order a a small bowl , that way I can also order some extra tempura or maki.It may not be on the menu bu they are accomidating and if you want a little extra something they will usually be able to add it ( for a reasonable price) I always get some California roll, because I love that I can order a small( 3 pc.) serving or if I'm craving it, a super sized (9pc) one! It's extra creamy and delicious. If it's super hot outside I'll get some cold soba noodles and maki. On rare times I can get my husband to eat here, he's all about the teriyaki and has high praise for both beef and salmon Teriyaki. I like the Ahi. When you think you might need a snack later you can't go wrong with their mochiko fried chicken or musubi, oishi!
