Sacred Heart Parish School. Oh boy... Where to begin?…read more I attended SHPS from 4th to 7th grade in the early 2000s and it definitely left a mark, but not in a positive way. My family moved to the U.S. from Mexico and SHPS was very accommodating in accepting me at such a late stage of the admissions process (although, looking back on it, the admissions "test" wasn't exactly difficult, considering I took it right there and then and passed it on the spot). I will admit that the first year was great; made several friends, the events the school held were great (my favorites being the Blessing of the Animals and the Lady of Guadalupe carnival), and even the hot lunches served twice a week were the coolest thing I had ever experienced (not something you normally saw in Mexico, much less nowadays with all the fuzz going on about healthy school lunches). The problems started when I was in 5th grade. Like any young boy, I started getting into trouble because of a myriad of shenanigans. This wouldn't have been anything out of the ordinary if it hadn't been for the fact that the principal, who no longer works there (thankfully), seemed to have made it his mission to expel me. I came to know the principal's office better than my own homeroom. I should also mention that I had a friend who would participate in whatever shenanigans I got myself into, meaning that he was EQUALLY guilty. However, the principal didn't seem to think so. Oh, and by the way, my friend was Caucasian. So, the Hispanic boy is the guilty one, but the Caucasian one isn't, even though they both engaged in the same type of shenanigans. I'll let you draw your own conclusions on that. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I gave a girl I had a crush on a little notebook that said 'I Love You' on the cover. For some reason, the girl's parents thought this kind of gift was pure blasphemy, because the principal quickly jumped on the bandwagon of calling it "sexual harassment." It seems this gave him enough justification to expel me. I don't know why my parents insisted on me remaining at SHPS, but for some reason, I was allowed back into the school on the condition that I see a psychologist during the summer. I felt like I was on probation during 7th grade and it must've been clear to my parents as well because I had to switch schools a year before starting high school sine it seemed like the principal was going to expel me again if I even so much as sneezed the wrong way. This was almost 20 years ago, and the fact that the principal no longer works there is one good thing the school has going for it, but I can't say for sure if his replacement is any better. If something like this were to happen today, the school would be drowning in lawsuits. SHPS did not hesitate to use the rod.

The classes are shorter in length and give the kids the ability to practice not only their social skills but also motor skills with things like arts and crafts projects, free play, music classes, dress up and role playing. I believe they offer classes starting at age 18 months. I absolutely love it. Not only are the classes smaller in size, they offer a lot of variety in programming and the teachers are fantastic!! Its definitely a gem in Coronado!

This is not a preschool or even what you would call a "daycare", it is more of a place of learning…read more They provide classes from 45 min up to 2 hours on art, musc, lanuage and more. Basically it' just a really nice way to be able to go to the gym, run to the store, etc, and know that your child is getting nourished mentally. The owner, Brittani Thiel, has been working with and taking courses on child development since 2003. She is really amazing, and this place has been a gift for me. I have my 'me' time back.... and now that there is a movie theater in Coronado I might be able to see a movie again!! Take look at the website. I says it all.

First, it is structured but unstructured so this really allows kids to grow to become school ready at their own pace. It is not this way at other schools. Also, we really like the fact that they provide snacks and lunch so the kids all are eating the same foods. We know our son, and if kids had items that our son wanted and didn't have them in his lunchbox, it might he a situation, so this works for us better. The teachers and Pastor John are all really kind, caring and wonderful and provide great supervision of the children. We also love the fact that there's always parking to load and unload in front. And we really love the safe playground. There's also a lot of flexibility in the number of days per week and the amount of hours per day, so this has been really wonderful for us as well. Our son is so happy every time he gets to get dropped off and loves being there - we talk about his day every day and things he did at school, so that is very cool! They are also starting a kids ballet and dance class during the school hours, so that is fun as well.

Our son is in the University Heights location and has been there for about six months. He literally dances with excitement when he sees the mural outside of school and smiles and giggles when he sees any of his teachers. He is always doing fun activities, and the staff are incredibly warm, kind, and thoughtful. I would highly recommend Aspen Leaf to any family who is lucky enough to grab a spot!

I was in awe as my daughter would, at three and four years old, tell me how our behaviors impact other people's feelings, how she could make the world a better place, and how she could self-regulate by using deep breathing when she was frustrated. The staff and teachers were extremely professional and yet truly loved each of the children, as was evident from how tightly knit my daughter's little cohort became. Fleur de Lis School provided our son and our family the most incredible experience we could have…read moreever asked for. In our 2 years there, we watched our son grow immensely in his confidence, relationships, and overall love of learning. He was sad to leave school every day and excited to wake up and start the day with his amazing friends and teachers. The approach and philosophy that Fleur de Lis takes truly allows each child to blossom in their own unique and beautiful way and we not only got to experience this with our son, but saw it with his classmates as well. We saw our son make presentations to his class about a science or art project he did with us at home or proudly present his show and tell Spider-man toy to his classmates - we are so grateful to the entire Fleur de Lis community for encouraging this level of self-esteem and individuality.  The staff at Fleur de Lis is truly one of a kind -  the professional, yet individualized attention of Tina Smith and April Kozelh as directors is amazing. They know your child personally and do everything in their power to make your child's experience at Fleur de Lis enriching and creative. Our son still talks about Ms. Tina coming into their classroom and reading them special books (his favorite was about an owl in NYC) and Tina consistently shared specific memories of our son's social and emotional growth during his time there. The teachers we had at Fleur de Lis (Ms. Sandy, Ms. Chelsea, Ms. Amber, Ms. Kiara and Ms. Diana for Spanish) were incredible in every way - we appreciated the attention to the holistic needs of each child - the cognitive, physical, and emotional were all given attention and we saw our son blossom in each area. The day our son "graduated" Fleur de Lis School was a bittersweet one - we were thrilled to know he was ready for kindergarten, but also so sad to say goodbye to the daily moments of this special community. I remember my son, Julian, sobbing when I left him on his first day as a two year old, and my heart was breaking. In less than a week, he was all smiles at drop off, excited to see his teachers and friends. Since then, he's thrived at this school, both emotionally and educationally. Now, two years later, he's heading to Francis Parker, and looking back on his time at FDL, I can't express how grateful I am to the amazing team there. There are a few specifics that make FDL special: The community -- everyone at FDL knows Julian's name, even teachers who aren't assigned to his class. Pre-Covid, when I would pick him up from his classroom, his daily departure was like a little parade, with waves and goodbyes to friends, teachers, directors, everyone. You really feel like part of a family here. Kira, Bev, April, Julie, Julia, Diana, Iris, Nina, Autumn, and many others...each has been a unique and positive impact on Julian and our family over the past two years. The safety -- speaking of Covid, I don't think I appreciated how nice it is to have total confidence in the efforts of the FDL team to keep my child safe at all costs until this pandemic. When they reopened under new safety guidelines, I never once worried they would slack or not keep the sanitation and safety bar high. In fact, Julian now inspects my hand washing and admonishes me if I have not made enough soap bubbles or washed long enough . They always ran a tight ship, but it's exceptional now. The positive reinforcement of high expectations -- on my visit prior to enrolling at FDL, I saw all the kids eating lunch as they chattered politely and consistently used manners. On the playground, no one pushed. They all took turns. What's more, they were still incredibly joyous little kids, giggling and delighting in silly play. I was in awe. And yet, now Julian models those same behaviors. FDL teachers are kind and warm, but firm. They set a high bar, and the kids rise to meet it. At the same time, there is tremendous fun had on the daily at this school. Julian greets me at pick up with a big smile and a hug, his cheeks flushed from play and sand in his shoes. He excitedly shows me his projects and tells me funny stories and things he learned from the day. FDL is exceptional. If you have the chance to send your child there, take it. You would be hard pressed to find a more loving and capable setting. We will miss it terribly!
