These are injections directly into the eye, so feeling comfortable and confident with the physician performing them is extremely important. A few months ago her regular doctor was on leave, and she was treated by another physician in the practice. The difference in her experience was very noticeable. This doctor took time to explain the procedure, rinsed her eyes afterward, and my mother left with significantly less pain and fewer side effects than she normally experiences. Because of that experience, my mother has asked multiple times to switch to that doctor. Each time she has been flat-out denied the request. This is incredibly frustrating and difficult to understand, especially since the doctor she prefers is reportedly accepting new patients. My mother is an older patient, and navigating repeated denials and administrative hurdles like this has been very stressful and discouraging for her. Patients should have a reasonable ability to choose the physician they feel most comfortable with for an ongoing treatment like this, especially when injections into the eye are involved. These treatments happen every 4-6 weeks and they are scary and uncomfortable. Instead, she has repeatedly been told she cannot switch doctors within the practice. After asking multiple times and being denied each time, she now feels stuck continuing care with a doctor she doesn't feel comfortable with, which is a very difficult position for a patient receiving eye injections every few weeks. At this point we are strongly considering moving her care to a different retina specialist outside of KU altogether. It's disappointing that a large medical system would refuse to work with a patient on something as reasonable as choosing the physician who is injecting medication into her eyes. I truly hope someone from patient relations or clinic leadership will review this situation and reconsider. I am giving two stars instead of one because there is a front desk gentleman who has always been very kind to my mother and has helped put her at ease several times. Unfortunately this situation is clearly outside of his control, but his kindness has not gone unnoticed.

However, when he attempted to inject lidocaine into my eyelid before the procedure, he injected the lidocaine into my left eye. The lidocaine included ingredients toxic to my eye, leading to excruciating pain, permanent eye damage, and disfigurement. As you can see by the attached picture, my eye is permanently disfigured. I was only 34 years old at the time of the incident, and it has caused immeasurable distress in my life. To make things worse, neither Dr. Chappell nor his employer, Moyes Eye Center, have taken any responsibility for their actions, despite Dr. Chappell admitting this under oath during his deposition: Q. Are you aware that one of the allegations in this case is that you inadvertently injected Lidocaine into her eye? A. Yes. Q. Are you able to rule out that that occurred during the procedure? ** A. I cannot rule it out. ** A. There's a number of possible causes for her postoperative post-procedure course. Q. And I know you went through some of them with me, but my question for you is are you aware if the doctors at Moyes who were -- who saw Ms. Dehnert in 2022, if you all were able to reach a consensus about the cause of her postoperative issues? A. Through many discussions and many evaluations, we have possible intraocular injection of medication as the most likely cause, with a number of other possible causes. I have been forced to hire an attorney and this matter remains unresolved, with Dr. Chappell denying my claims and offering me no compensation for my injuries. I am a single mom to a young daughter, which makes the emotional and financial stress of this incident even worse.

I was unfortunately referred to them as a result of my eye doctor being out of the country. I was fit in to be seen on 6/24/2022. Although the ladies at the front desk were kind upon my arrival, as soon as I made it back to the exam room, that's where the kindness ended. After waiting patiently for Dr. Amy W. Gemperli to enter the room, once she did, without so much as a hello, she rushed through my exam and performed it incompletely. Being someone who has had countless eye exams due to my condition, I am very knowledgeable of the process and procedures of this exam. After an exam that literally ended in about 5 minutes, she said that I was fine & could go, & that she didn't see anything wrong with my eye. When I questioned Dr. Gemperli's findings & explained that I've experienced the symptoms frequently enough to know that there's an issue, she again brushed past my concerns & repeated that she saw nothing, & abruptly sent me on my way. I paid my $80 co-pay & left the building feeling unseen, unheard, and untreated. Dr. Gemperli's lack of bedside manner was shocking & disheartening. After leaving Heart of America untreated & unhappy with the results of my appointment, & after having crucial parts of the exam skipped, as Dr. Gemperli appeared to be in a rush, I called her office & expressed my concerns. I was told that Dr. Gemperli would call me back at 12 to address my concerns. It wasn't until nearly 6 o'clock that evening that she returned my call. When I answered, once again, she seemed annoyed & her tone was unsettling. I shared my concerns with her about crucial parts of the exam being skipped, how the appointment felt rushed, & my concerns with her findings of nothing when I clearly was experiencing symptoms & pain. Her response added insult to injury. She replied, "That's what happens when you get fit in". I was aghast. I attempted to further explain to Dr. Gemperli that although I was grateful to be fit in, it didn't mean that I didn't deserve complete treatment. I also took the opportunity to share that as a woman of color, we are often gaslit when it comes to our pain in the medical field & we often feel unseen & unheard in spaces; however, she remained unsympathetic, unmoved, & offered no empathy or apologies for my concerns. In fact, she began speaking to me in a rude manner and I respectfully communicated that I would no longer continue on the call being spoken to that in that manner & I disconnected the call. I was treated with such disdain. I was fortunately able to get in with my Ophthalmologist a couple of days later where he confirmed that I in fact was experiencing the condition that I sought treatment from Dr. Gemperli for. Through my Ophthalmologist, I was given the proper treatment & prescribed the proper medications for my condition. After receiving the confirmation and validation from my office, I called Heart of America in attempts to reach someone higher up to address my concerns. I was transferred to a Blake in HR. With no answer, I left a detailed message & my availability for when I could be reached. I was never contacted. I called and left a message for a 2nd time and still was not called back. Unwilling to disregard the issue, I contacted Heart of America once more in attempt to have someone address my concerns. A Lisa answered the phone & after explaining to her that I needed to speak to someone regarding a recent visit with a negative outcome, she insisted that I share with her what had occurred. I responded that I had no desire of doing so & that I only wanted to get in touch with someone who could rectify my issues. She refused to provide the contact information of anyone that could help. Hence this review. My issues are still unaddressed & I am left speechless.

So, Brill Eye Center…read more.. I was a customer off and on for a number of years. The off part was because I was unemployed for a bit and didn't have vision insurance, but when I was working this was my place. I liked that the clinic offered Saturday morning hours and thought the doctor did a thorough job performing his eye exams. Now, some of the tests he performed weren't covered by my insurance and I didn't know this until I went to pay, but for the most part those tests weren't super expensive and I thought they were good tests to have. So, what happened? One of the employees lost it, that's what happened. I called in to get a copy of my prescription because I used all of this year's insurance money on new frames and lenses, but I needed contact lenses. I normally bought them through the eye center however it was less expensive to go through an online retailer until my insurance year flipped and I could use those funds here. Apparently to get a copy of your prescription you need a contact lense prescription, not just a regular prescription and I had "declined" my option to get this test. I was never offered this test. I'd been a customer for years and never heard of this test. I had previously talked to the doctor about my contact lenses, but didn't know there was a separate test because it had never been offered. Anyway, while trying to figure out what the woman I was speaking with was talking about our conversation went to civil, to strained to her screaming at me over the phone. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. I did end up talking to Dr. Brill after this and while our conversation was mostly civil, I will maintain that I was never told about or offered a contact lense eye test and I also felt like I was being mocked a bit for wanting to get contact lenses at a less expensive option than this office. He also blamed the behavior of the woman I spoke with on her being a millenial, which honestly didn't sit well with me. I do think for the most part this is good office and Dr. Brill is a good doctor however I work really hard for my benefits and I am not going to spend my money at a place that treats me this way. If you're looking at this office, please do your research. Ask up front whether all of the tests are covered by your insurance and don't you dare let them disrespect you while you're doing it.

My only concern are some of the younger staff that help at the front desk are not as professional but many of them don't stick around for long. I would highly recommend going there. They have good frames for glasses but if you are on a budget maybe get the frames but get the lenses else where. If you are not as concerned for a budget or don't get your lenses changed as often I say splurge and just get it all done there.

Initial consultation was with Dr Durrie himself, and the surgery was done by Dr Stahl. I appreciate all the work they have done. Over ten tests were performed on my eyes before starting doctor showed up. Dr Durrie went over the whole procedure in the consultation, told me about side effects. They have also warned me that there is a chance that this may not be permanent. Once I've confirmed that I would like to get the procedure done, I've talked to Brian about financing options and left happy (you just can not beat %0 financing). On the day of procedure they numbed my eyes (I declined taking Valium), explained to me everything once again, step by step, and warned me that they will be telling me what to do once the procedure starts. Oh, boy, those 5 minutes went by so fast. Procedure was painless, but a little uncomfortable. Once I got up from the surgical bed, I was able to tell the difference, my vision has changed. Forgot to mention that my husband was in a waiting room watching the procedure on TV with a nurse that went into detail explaining what was going on. I was sensitive to light for a few days, just as they said I would be, but artificial tears and sunglasses helped a ton. When you sign contract with these people they tell you there is a two year guarantee for the services performed. Well, I have forgotten about this, but they did not. They have called me about two weeks ago to remind that I need to be seen, as my guarantee will end in two months and they want to make sure I have no concerns they can help with. Say WHAT??? Can you imagine dealer calling you to ask if everything is ok with your car, as your guarantee wears out in two months?? I can't, as it does not happen. Durrie Vision does, because they care and they believe in the product they deliver. They won my heart and my business and I am so happy we chose them almost two years ago.
