So, Brill Eye Center... I was a customer off and on for a number of years. The off part was because I was unemployed for a bit and didn't have vision insurance, but when I was working this was my place. I liked that the clinic offered Saturday morning hours and thought the doctor did a thorough job performing his eye exams. Now, some of the tests he performed weren't covered by my insurance and I didn't know this until I went to pay, but for the most part those tests weren't super expensive and I thought they were good tests to have. So, what happened? One of the employees lost it, that's what happened. I called in to get a copy of my prescription because I used all of this year's insurance money on new frames and lenses, but I needed contact lenses. I normally bought them through the eye center however it was less expensive to go through an online retailer until my insurance year flipped and I could use those funds here. Apparently to get a copy of your prescription you need a contact lense prescription, not just a regular prescription and I had "declined" my option to get this test. I was never offered this test. I'd been a customer for years and never heard of this test. I had previously talked to the doctor about my contact lenses, but didn't know there was a separate test because it had never been offered. Anyway, while trying to figure out what the woman I was speaking with was talking about our conversation went to civil, to strained to her screaming at me over the phone. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. I did end up talking to Dr. Brill after this and while our conversation was mostly civil, I will maintain that I was never told about or offered a contact lense eye test and I also felt like I was being mocked a bit for wanting to get contact lenses at a less expensive option than this office. He also blamed the behavior of the woman I spoke with on her being a millenial, which honestly didn't sit well with me. I do think for the most part this is good office and Dr. Brill is a good doctor however I work really hard for my benefits and I am not going to spend my money at a place that treats me this way. If you're looking at this office, please do your research. Ask up front whether all of the tests are covered by your insurance and don't you dare let them disrespect you while you're doing it. read more

The eye center really nice. It's always clean and have quality products and equipment. A vast improvement from the eye doctor I use to go to. My only concern are some of the younger staff that help at the front desk are not as professional but many of them don't stick around for long. I would highly recommend going there. They have good frames for glasses but if you are on a budget maybe get the frames but get the lenses else where. If you are not as concerned for a budget or don't get your lenses changed as often I say splurge and just get it all done there. read more

Rachel at Brill Eye Center is beyond amazing. I recently had to get a pair of progressive lenses(reluctantly), and the efficiency at which this office works is mind-boggling. I was going to miss an appt due to a family emergency, and not only did she offer us well-wishes, she asked for a pic of me in the frames for measurements. I'd didn't understand the full scope of what she was about to do, but it was amazing. She took the pic of me in the frames and ordered the lenses and called me when they came in. They were a little slow, but they set the lenses in my frames and I walked out in under a half hour. I don't think this is always the case, but if it is, they have #chickfila drive thru efficiency. Brill Eye Center has a beautiful showroom and top of the line equipment that makes you think you are visiting a cutting edge office. However, I've visited twice now, and each time I've felt like my well being takes a back seat to their main goal, which is to hard sell products and services. First visit they tried to sell me glasses, I later found out the amount of correction I needed was so small that the perscription they wrote had a very minimal effect. On my second visit Dr. Brill used a very aggressive sales strategy to get me to purchase a dry-eye procedure, guilt tripping me when I had to pass due to its incredible expense. The whole conversation was a sales pitch that had very little to do with my well being, and had me leaving the building feeling like I'd been scammed. I won't be returning. read more

I've been coming here for years. Dr Brill is very nice & personable. The staff makes you feel very comfortable. I am not cool with people being close to my eyes but they all help me through it every time. Last year I decided to get prescription sunglasses. I found a pair that looked great & was an very affordable price. Unfortunately, the lens shape did not work well for my vision. The office sent them back to remake the lenses (for free) but it still didn't work. I picked out a new pair that was higher priced but just paid the difference instead of buying a whole new pair. They keep the entire office very clean & equipment up-to-date. I live farther from the office but he's worth the trip. read more

I had a very bad experience with Brill Eye Center today. I called and got an appointment for today and ended up waiting for 45 min past my appointment time, finally someone came out and suggested that I look for frames now (before my appointment) as the Dr will probably be 30 to 45 min longer so almost 90 min late. ) It is not as though I had the time to wait for the DR or anything else to do today..........like work ) I was of course surprised by two things, how late the Dr was running with such bad service -- why would they schedule an appt the same day if he was running so late? Secondly, why would the assistant ask me to start picking out frames before my exam, before knowing if I needed a new prescription...........almost a forgone conclusion that I would need a new RX and to spend money on new frames and lenses, that is borderline unethical! Needless to say I will not be scheduling a new appointment with these guys! Very disappointed !!!! read more

The staff is friendly, but they do shady things. They give you the price of your glasses but do not reveal the unnecessary things they added, if you press them for the breakdown they act like it's part of your insurance plan. Be warned. I hadn't yet picked up my glasses and my bill was sent to collections. I understand after a certain time it has to be sent to collections. What I was disappointed about was no one contacted me about them sending my bill to collections. I didn't even have the glasses in hand. At the very least they could have gave me a heads up. I contacted the front desk woman and she was extremely rude about the situation and didn't offer to help work it out at all. I had to go to the office manager to get my glasses and my bill out of collections. It's too bad I have to give 1 star. Because almost all of the other employees there are wonderful. Brill Eye Center is excellent for contact lens/glasses exams, as well as troubleshooting any issues you may have with your eyes. I have had my exams done for the last two years done here and have found they are very through and accommodating if you have any issues with fitting or strength. Both optometrists I have seen have been very friendly, personable, and well spoken. Every other person I have interacted with in the office has been friendly as well. Last month my eye developed some irritation and redness over the weekend, and I decided to have Dr. Brill examine it to make sure it was not something serious - although I just suspected pink eye. He did a through exam and determined it was simply irritation and prescribed an eye drop, which worked wonders. Yesterday was my follow up exam to get my contacts fitted and prescription updated after the irritation. But due to a misunderstanding I was only booked for the follow up on my eyes, not the contact exam. Dr. Brill was accommodating in fitting me into the schedule although there was some understandable hesitation because he had several other patients booked. They were able to update my prescription in a timely manner and everyone left happy! The only thing I wouldn't necessarily recommend is that, in my personal opinion, I feel their glasses are priced steeply. I wear my contacts probably 98% of the time and simply don't need a pair of glasses that will set me back a pretty penny after insurance. I have chosen to purchase my glasses at another store in Lenexa, but have found the price on contacts to be fair with my insurance. read more

Awful. The office staff just placed order slips in files and never even orders your glasses. We have called several times leaving messages about a reaction to a prescriptions and to possible try a different eye drop. Can never get a call back and it's been over a month and you call back to follow up and the office staff is rude and hangs up on you. They also over charge on office fees. I went to Brill Eye center with my prescription from my optometrist and I had recommendations that they had the best selection. Not only do they have the best selection of glasses but they have the absolute best customer service! Kevin was the technician that helped me. I was lost trying to find the best glasses for my face and needs. Kevin spent over an hour with me discussing what frame would be best for my face shape and to give me the best vision. My glasses were ready within a few days. They then put prescription lenses in my sunglasses and rushed them because they knew I was going out of town. No stars.This place was so scammy I cannot believe they are in business at all. I didn't even get my prescription which is why I went to begin with. A so called assistant took me aside after my daughter's exam and informed me if I didn't pay an extra $179.00, they wouldn't give me her contact lens prescription. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I have seen many opthalmologists over the years and each one explained to me what was covered under my insurance and informed me of what I would pay extra for I chose to. These folks took total advantage, explained nothing, and I left with over $300.00 bill. Unethical doesn't even begin to describe this establishment. DO NOT GO HERE. First visit late July 2016... Nice facility, staff is friendly, those are the 2 stars. Had an appointment but experienced a 30 minute wait. I went in to get a check up, the exam was routine and I decided to get an updated contact prescription though I had quite a few pairs left. They threw away the pair I wore in and sent me home in a new pair to try for a week and to return for a fit check and to get my prescription. I came back a week later, waited another 30 minutes to be seen. That's when the health care services ended and the hard sales pitch began: discounts for larger contact orders, discrediting other supply sources, scare tactics about online wholesalers, etc. I left without buying anything knowing the prescription was for 1 year and I could purchase more when my supply ran low. Well, in late May I realized I needed contacts and shopped around. Walgreens had a rebate on some higher quality lenses so I called the office for my prescription details which they emailed to me after a couple of follow up calls. I entered the data and arranged for the order on June 17th. Walgreens confirms order prescriptions with the optometrist and Dr. R.B. denied the prescription on the grounds that it was nearing the expiration. When I followed up, Walgreens informed me the office said the expiration as 6/24, expiration on the prescription emailed to me from the office was 8/8. I should not have waited as long as I did to order, that is on me. The sales driven approach to optical care, that's on them. I'm not surprised they shortened the date of the prescription or denied my purchase though it was still within the valid window. They have a system of up selling for exams you may not need, scheduling unnecessary follow up visits and high pressure product sales. If you read other reviews, you will see this as a common concern. read more

Scamy! I arrived 10 minutes early but didn't actually see the optometrist for an hour after my appointment time. Shame on me I just assumed an eye exam for a contact lens RX and glasses RX would be under $200 from every other experience I've ever had in 40 years of eye doctors. My previous optometrist charges $154 for an exam that includes prescriptions for both. Halfway through the exam the optometrist steps out and the assistant said she needed me to review the charges for today and I have to sign. Not at the beginning, but in the middle while you are trapped in the chair and you've already been examined and you feel locked in. Their charges were $487 for exam and the two RX papers. No glasses, no contacts, $487 for the exam and 2 pieces of paper. I said wow I had no idea you were this high priced. The assistant said our prices are comparable with other places. No you are triple the price of other places! They wanted to sell me overpriced contacts and glasses but I just wanted to leave after being there 2 hours and already completely ripped off. Brill told me that I "wouldn't be able find proper fitting glasses on my own because one of my ears is further from the brim of my nose than the other ear." What? They never measured my ears! "If you buy frames online they are made in China." Where do you think Oakley's are made? After paying for the exam I asked twice for my prescriptions and still was only given the one for glasses. I had to ask a third time for them to bring me the contact lens prescription they were trying to withhold so I'd have to buy overpriced contacts from them. I had just been there two hours, paid triple the going rate for an exam, and now they were playing hide the prescription. The assistant actually said, "Oh you wanted your contact lens prescription too?" I've asked 3 times for it and why wouldn't I want what I just paid for? This staff is coached to lock you in and shake you down. When I got home I measured the distance between each ear and the brim of my nose out of curiosity...I am happy to report both ears had the exact same measurement to my nose. I'm a new patient at Brill Eye Center and have been thoroughly impressed with all facets of the practice. I have a somewhat complicated vision case due to prior LASIK and, despite visits to various other eye care centers, I've not seen well through contacts or spectacles for the past two years. Dr. Brill was able to zero in on the right solution for me during my very first visit and I'm now seeing crystal clear in both contacts and spectacles for what feels like the first time in forever. Special shout out to Kevin in the optical shop, who was a tremendous help in tuning my new spectacle lenses to get them perfect. I went once to their clinic and decided will never go there. They always over charge and try to bill you more by making up diagnosis. The first time when I went, he checked my eyes but did not give me a prescription for contact lenses and asked me to come in 1 week. When I went to them after a week, that was just to get my prescription, I waited for him in the room for greater than 1 hour, kept myself cool and after more than an hour came out to front desk to know what is going on and they said doctor is busy but he has written the contact lens prescription for you without seeing you. I was mad coz I waited for this prescription for more than an hour in his room ( asked the nurse multiple times as when is the optometrist going to show up, however he never showed up and without even looking he wrote a prescription. Secondly, he could have written a prescription the first time rather than calling me and second time and wasting my more than 1 hour. BEWARE, he will ask you to keep your retinal picture and charge extra dollar 30-40 which most other optometrist do for free. I have changed my optometrist and happy with my current one and is million times better than Brill. read more

Wrong prescription, Excuses excuses excuses, Overcharge I have been going since 1998 according to their records. Back then there was no ordering online. In early 2016 I got an exam and new frames and lenses from Brill. The following week after my new glasses arrived, I went back because I couldn't see well to drive. Lenses are too weak. Dr Brill first excuse was that there was a smudge on the lenses. He wiped it off and sent me on my way. Days later I went back because still can't see to drive. He said it's because your glasses sit too far down your nose. You need to push them up to the eyeballs. I didn't like this answer but he insisted there is nothing wrong with my prescription. Weeks later I went back and insisted he recheck my prescription because I still can't see well. He said it's my blood sugar that is fluctuating which is causing my eyes to be out of focus. I went to my medical Dr to have my blood sugar checked. Blood sugar fine, my A1C is fine. I go back for a fifth time and insist that he give me the right prescription or refund. He reluctantly agreed to recut the lenses. They do the cutting right there in their office. I got my new glasses the next day and all was fine. Getting glasses I can see out of took many many weeks and many trips back. Excuses are never good when person can't see motorcycles and bicycles when driving. All was well for about 9 mo until the frame fell apart. I put the glasses in a bag to take them in to be fixed but lost them in the meantime. I called to see about getting replacements but the price was over $350. I asked if I can just get my prescription and I'll order new glasses online. The guy on the phone strongly discouraged me. "Yes you can get cheaper online but you get what you pay for. I get most of my business from people who ordered online and got bad glasses and eventually they come to me because I'm certified ophthalmic laboratory technician and I do it right. Online places aren't. And their frames will fall apart quickly because they get them from China. Long story short, I took my chances and ordered my new glasses and frames online from a cheap place and so very happy I did. My new glasses are 5 times cheaper than the one pair I got from Brill. The order came in week. $59 for all (frame, high index featherweight lenses). Bottom line, Brill overcharges about 5X more and claims to have better quality but I found this not to be true. The Brill frame still fell apart so they can't bash the online Chinese frames. The dr just didn't want to recut the lenses after botched prescription. And the icing on the cake was the staff on the phone trying to discourage me turning to online glasses was because he was looking at my vision history and my eyes have changed a lot since 1998. I said yeah that's normal as we age. He argued that "No it's not". "You are very unique and greatly changed over the years." Therefore getting glasses online won't give me a good experience due to the uniqueness of my vision history. I hung up and found an old pair of glasses I got in 2002 and wore those until my new pair came in. This is when I realized the prescription is exactly the same. My old 2002 glasses are the exact same as the new ones. I can't see any difference between the old and new so the guy on the phone was so full of bologna. I didn't know this but I didn't actual need new glasses. Dr Brill didn't tell me that. If you go there, he's a nice guy but don't trust what he says. They are full of excuses. They'll try to sell you vitamins, and they will try to discourage you from ordering from cheaper places online. Go ahead and order online and if it's not a good fit then order from Brill. read more

It took me FIVE months to get a prescription that actually worked for me here. Dr.Brill himself lectured me/belittled me every time I said that the prescription wasn't working, as if I was wanting to delay getting my prescription correct? The least amount of time that I ever waited to be seen was 30 minutes. The longest being 45 mins. When I explained to him that I didn't think I was going to be able to afford the types of frames/glasses they had to offer again he lectured me and said well let me know how those cheap internet sites work out for you as he was walking out of the room, and ended the appointment with that. If you want the very best eye exam, go to Brill Eye Center. They have the most cutting edge equipment in Kansas City. They have this cool machine that takes a picture of your retina so that you don't have to get your eyes dilated. I HATE getting my eyes dilated. They also have the widest variety of frames of anywhere in town. This includes all the cool new colors, shapes and styles. They aren't the cheapest in town, but they have the best stuff. Your eyes are probably one place where you don't want to skimp. read more

Dr. Brill is very knowledgeable about dry eye. I had very thorough evaluation and he determined that I was a candidate for Lipiflow. I basically threw away $250+ for an eye exam that I can't do anything with. Do not make an appointment here without checking the prices of their services and comparing it to others! They massively overcharged me for their services! I have been to several other eye centers and have never paid what I paid for a contact lenses fitting. They add on "1 year management" to try to justify the $125.00 price tag and they will not allow you to pay for the contact lense fitting without the management. When I tried to discuss this with Debbie over the phone she says to me very rudely "Are you going to let me talk. Stop talking over me". Very poor customer service. It is a HIPPA violation to have a sales person in an exam room. The doctor created a menacing & bullying atmosphere. Your prescription should be freely given. You paid for it. It is the result of your eye exam. The apparent goal is to keep you trapped, or coming back until you buy something over priced and or unnecessary. Even with insurance charges and in network it would have been cheaper for me to have gone to an out of network provider to get my glasses, that isn't right. I saw charges and co-pays that I had never seen before. they even tried to get me to buy services that weren't covered by my insurance. I was excited to be there when i first arrived and when I left I felt like I had been hassled to death. I also felt like they were fed up with me because I wasnt willing to drop a grand on the bill. many of their frames are over $300.00 and they arent even price marked, they are marked in code such as B15 instead of$115, C15 = $215. and there are a lot of C, D, and E glasses. I was very impressed with the services I received at Brill Eye Center. My eye exam was quick and the staff was extremely helpful. Dr. Brill was friendly and made the exam relaxed. Afterwards, I tried on multiple different frames. Eric helped me and was very knowledgeable about what was in stock and very patient at my indecisiveness about what I wanted/needed. He was really great to work with. Dr. Brill had mentioned the affects of blue light on the eyes, so I went with lenses that blocked blue light. Overall, it was a great experience. Just had an appointment with the consummate retina specialist, Dr. Gregory Fox. Now I went to an opthamologist because both my parents have wet macular degeneration, so I don't want to take any chances and ward off problems before they start. Despite the results of the "test" I'd had at Brill Eye Center, I got excellent news about the health of my macula. I asked Dr. Fox if I should take an eye supplement like Eye Promise, lutein or zeathanthin. He said no unless I started to develop signs of macular degeneration, which he didn't expect to be problem for at least the next 10 years. I couldn't believe what I heard and asked again and got the same response. When a noted specialist says something like that, you listen! So whose advice are you going to take, an optometrist or one of the area's noted retina specialists, who I am sure stays current on the latest medical research? The day I was there, he was being shadowed by an opthamologist from the University of Kansas Hospital. I do visit an optometrist for eyeglasses but go to an opthamologist for my eye health. I have had three vision exams from the wonderful Kannarr Eye Care since the experience at Brill--all giving me excellent reports on my macula and all agreeing with Dr. Fox that there is no reason to take the eye vitamins while my macula is healthy. read more

I've used Brill Eye Center for several years to maintain my contact lens prescription and have felt exams were well done and I was well treated. But then I made the mistake of thinking I could just bring in some older metal frames I had worn before and get new lenses. I accepted that I might get charged for both "contact fitting" (I did not get contacts) and the eyeglass eye exam. And where I had previously been offered the option of not "requesting" the extra not-insurance-paid eye-scan (Optomap), this time I was just told I needed to have this done (because "the doctor wanted it"). My wait time at each step (before being taken back for exam, and then further waiting for doctor to see me) was on the border of annoying for this "scheduled" exam. Then there was the Dr. Brill's assessment that my old frames could not be used, even though I and others of his staff couldn't see what he was talking about, until he took them back to "check" them. After haggling, I agreed to also buy a new set of frames. But even though I selected frames that happened to be $99 (and I am quite happy with those frames). I was charged $1,000 for exams and that set of glasses. Then I was charged $500 for getting new lenses in the frames I supplied. The frames I supplied have, subsequently, never fit right and do, now, readily appear to anyone as damaged. But, of course, the understanding for having my old frames used was that Brill Eye Center people would never attempt to adjust the fit. I can't help feeling that the guiding principle here is to maximize profit and forget about working with the customer, and somehow I "disrespected" them by even considering to bring in my old frames and deserved to be screwed. read more

i was at there mission office about 6 weeks ago. had my eyes examed, and was issued a script for new glass's that i gladly allowed them to make for me. after about a 3 week wait i received my glass's only to find out they were made wrong. so they said they would send them back and have them remaid. after another 3 week wait and several phone calls only to be put on hold untill i just got tired of waiting on someone to answer. i took it upon myself to just go up there again. once again the glass's were not right. i got up and walked out. i am a very very unhappy and no loger a customer of brill eye center. i would not recomend this place to my worsr enemy! read more

I have had the worst customer service ever experienced from Brill Eye Center. I had gone to him for several years and purchased expensive prescription glasses each time.This year, I purchased a new pair of glasses for over $1100. After picking them up, I had trouble seeing so I alternated my old glasses with the new ones. The new glasses fell apart and I put them back together. I took them back a week later and was told to come back the next day. I went back and was told there was a dispensing error and they should not have been dispensed to me. I asked for special monetary consideration because of their error and was told I had to speak to the doctor. I received a call the very next day and was told to come pick up my glasses as they were ready. I called to find out how they could be totally wrong one day and "fixed" the next. I spoke with Debbie, the office manager and told her I had no intention of picking up those glasses until I heard from the doctor and they were correctly dispensed. Long story--but he refused to refund my money-- I had to dispute it on my credit card. Then the doctor said he mailed the glasses to me and I never received them. I finally got a refund from my credit card company and got better glasses at a much lower price through another provider. I would not waste my time with him again. All he wants to do is sell you stuff like glasses and vitamins. The front end of the office is dedicated to optical where I assume he makes the majority of his money. He even divulged private information from my records trying to discredit me with the postal service. His office does not believe in customer service and their record keeping is shoddy at best. read more

When I checked out of an eye examine last Saturday I was very disappointed to learn I was charged over $70 for a contact fitting. What? I explained to the employee that I have been wearing contacts for over a decade and know what fits. Dr. Pingel told me that the previous brand was out of stock so he was prescribing me a new brand at the same price? I don't know if the new brand of contacts led to the fitting fee or if they were even out of stock. Either way I felt that they pulled the rug from underneath me. Never before has $140 benefit limit for contacts only provided for a half year supply. Did I mention they were off brand? Needless to say I am returning my contacts and taking my business elsewhere. I have had the same benefits for years and never had to pay out of pocket until I started going to Brill Eye Center. I am starting to believe that Lasik might be a better and definitely cheaper alternative. read more
