I left a google review for this business already, but one Google review doesn't do it justice for me. I want to leave another great review for this place because their customer service is excellent. Bryan and Deborah truly care about their clients. They make sure you are well taken care of. If they feel like their service was not good enough for their customers, they will reach out to make it right. This is what they've done for me recently. This place was absolutely filthy. We both went in to get both of our hair cut a few days ago and when the lady sat us in the chairs there was a dead bug on the floor that had obviously been there for days. Brian has skills, but it really depends on his mood when you visit. For the most part it will be inconsistent. Worse customer service ever, and if you complain you will receive the most inappropriate responses you have ever seen. Brian is the man! I don't really understand some of the reviews on here saying that he's not good at his job, because my experience was excellent and the cut was exactly what I wanted. Just a PSA for anyone that wants a good haircut... it's better to show a barber an actual image of what you want rather than explaining with your words. Very terrible experience. The barber station and quite the whole barbershop were not hygienic. The barber used a razor with so much pressure that made almost bled. Besides I requested one style of hair and they delivered another one. I tried to call the shop at (512) 906-1474 to complain after got home because my neck was red and a very bad rash, but the phone was disconnected. I sent an email but never got a return. Very disappointed to have this type the bad experience, it was better to go to a chain hair barber shop, at least I would save some bucks, and not $64.00. If I could leave 0 stars I would. First of all, I have to say that Brian will most likely respond to this review with some excuses... I've now seen his responses to other customers who were dissatisfied with his rude personality, tendency to charge for things without transparency, and lack of knowledge when it comes hair care and it is very immature and childish especially for a 40 year old man who is a business owner. Brian and Deborah are the most disrespectful and unprofessional "hair stylists" I've ever met. I made an appointment beforehand selecting the $40 haircut. When I arrived I asked for a regular fade. After an hour and a half of pointless procedures which I did not ask for he decides to charge me $57 because my hair was " too hard to cut" and because my hair was " too long" keep in mind I have curly hair, so if he is incompetent in his job and can't work with curly hair that should have been stated to me before he started touching my hair. After that Brian the scammer had the audacity to complain about not getting a tip. Brian I know you are seeing this, thanks for wasting an hour of your time you scammer. I never understand how people think they can maintain a successful business with lack of social skills and lack of care customer for customer service. I take comfort in knowing that other people see you for who you truly are. Let me just say I did not leave with a fade instead he messed up my hair and left me looking like a cotton ball. Brian does an excellent job with my son's hair. I love his little barber shop and how easy it is to get in. I dislike the price of the cut but I still choose to go. For me I'm used to paying $13-$18 for a kids cut, here with tip I'm paying about $30. Buttttttt he really does the best job. No, I did not add tip for a service I hadn't received yet. Yes, I was charged for the haircut I had not yet received. Yes, you're playing loud EDM and have a fake palm tree lit up like a Christmas tree in March at a 'retro' shop. Confused about your motif here. Yes, you spun me around backwards 3 times so you 'could use the mirror'. Sure, you need to know what you're doing, never have I been told to not look in the mirror. Yes, you whapped a hot towel on my face with no prompt and surprised the hell out of me Yes, you too forcibly used your hand to push my head up and out of the sink Yes, when the haircut was complete you prompted me with an iPad with a 30% tip suggested Yes, when I calmly offered to to give "constructive feedback" on the failed customer experience you are offering you yelled at me and kicked me out and said not to come back. Retro Barbershop is awesome. I really liked the laid back vibe with lots of dark wood and antique type fixtures. The barber / owner is fantastically skilled and precise. This is the coolest looking haircut I've gotten in a while. In fact, it's a shame that such a nice haircut is wasted on a minivan-driving dad type like me. As a previous patron of bustling and popular places like Bird's and Finleys, Retro was really impressive. It was a similar service taken to a classier, higher-quality level. I've been going to Brian for years, and when it comes to his barber skills they are some of the best I've seen. However, I'm giving him a one start review for everything else below and won't be coming back. First and foremost, on two separate occasions he made derogatory comments about women. Most recently, he was wanting to hire a secretary (for a barbershop of one), who he told me he planned on using as a sex object to ogle and flirt with for him and his clients. Second, his customer service is terrible. He is not reasonable when it comes to his cancellation policy and will auto charge your card regardless of the reason (including COVID). I've seen him raise his voice at his clients, myself included. On my last visit, when I informed him it would be my last, he screamed, threw my credit card across the counter, boasted about him being the best barber that I will ever meet (he's good, but definitely not the best), and informed me I would be back in front of his door on my knees crying and begging him for a good haircut. Despite his good skills, I wouldn't reccemend him to anyone until he learns how to properly conduct himself with his clients. read more

Brian's attention to detail and handiwork makes a visit here beyond worthwhile. Most barbers have problems with my hair, (cowlicks, too thick, etc.) but I can tell that he took the time to work with my hair. The shop itself has a lot of character and a really cool feel to it. If you like you're hair longer on top, this guy isn't for you. Read through the reviews and you'll find similar experiences to mine. Loved the atmosphere of his shop but the quality of the cut and service was not at all good. I keep it long on top with a fade on the sides. He suggested a "refresh". When I asked what that was he replied that he'd just take a of an inch off. I said perfect. Turned away from the mirror I couldn't see what he was doing until it was too late. The fade is much much shorter than what he was instructed as well. Then he put a weird dip in the beard line on one side of my face. I had to remind him twice to put in a hard part. When he saw my countenance fall after being turned to the mirror he asked if it was ok. I said that it isn't the haircut we discussed and he then told me "I cut it how you like it". Seemed pointless to argue since he obviously didn't care so I just paid and left. When I got home there was an email informing me that the second appointment I had booked for two weeks from now had been cancelled lol. It was nice to not have to do that myself, but indicative of the rude treatment other reviewers have been given by BrIan. Update (after Brian's reply- which for some reason, there are three reviews. I guess I did the updates wrong and now there's multiple. His response is on the original): Brian, I asked for the fade to go from a 1& 1/2 to a 2, which you acknowledged saying, "So not very short". Then you did a skin fade. The problem is you don't listen to your customers and treat them rudely when they're not happy with the result and then insult them when they give you feedback. The thing is, I paid without any protest and let you proceed with the beard after the hair was because I didn't hate the haircut. I didn't tip because you didn't do it the way I asked. I left the review, which I wouldn't have otherwise, because you were rude and noticed in other reviews that it wasn't an isolated incident. Regarding the beard, you didn't follow the line that was there. Again you didn't listen when I was telling you what I wanted, which was to just sharpen the existing straight beard lines. If you can incorporate more sure hospitality, desire to deliver on requests and gratitude for your guests into your customer service, you'll be much more likely to build your business. read more

I have had a long beard for several years and only get it trimmed on occasion. Today was probably the best trim I have gotten to date. I told him what I wanted, including "don't touch the mustache" and he made some suggestions that I politely declined. He gave me exactly what I asked for, did a great job that wasn't rushed but didn't seem prolonged either. I will definitely be back every 6 weeks or so to keep it up. read more

Visited shop for haircut. I tried to explain to male barber (Brian) how I wanted my hair done. He started cutting on one side then quit...unbelievable. Took off apron and refused to finish. Incredibly rude and unprofessional. I really advise that this is not a good place for a haircut of any type or style. I had gone here once before, and I had a nice conversation with the owner, and afterwards, I told him it was good but that I would like it a little less tapered in the back next time. I called today, which was 4 weeks later, to make a second appointment for myself for today, and this time I scheduled my son too (right after me). Then the creepiest thing happened. The owner called me back and seemed doubtful that I had intentionally scheduled two appointments, and then after I explained that the second one was for my son, he said that he did not feel comfortable cutting my hair because I was not satisfied the first time! I reminded him that it was fine except that I would like it a little less tapered in the back this time, but he was very insistent that I go elsewhere, so there has to be some other reason. I didn't tip him, and maybe he mistook that for dissatisfaction, but I had just explained that it was fine, so the explanation could have been that maybe he is just trying to filter out the non-tipping customers for financial reasons, which is only a little creepy. However, he had open slots today on short notice, and he had said a month earlier that he intends to hire a second barber immediately, so he needs the business ... so that's not it. That only leaves more creepy explanations, such as politics, but consider that I don't like Hillary or Trump and that I favor individual liberty. You could say I'm a kind of champion of the little guy, trying to save the world and all that. One would have to be pretty messed up to refuse to cut my hair for that reason. I think I gave him my card for my blog, and maybe he saw an article, such as one defending the right to own firearms, and maybe that triggered him to virtue signal. Like I said, creeeepy. Oh ... I think I also criticized Mao (I think the owner may be Chinese), but if that is what upset him so much, then that is also creepy. Maybe that's not it. Maybe he is just racist. That is the kind of creepy vibe I got from his call. Note how he refused to cut my hair again after I said I was bringing my son too--as if whatever he thinks is fundamentally wrong with me is also wrong with my son. I think he has much potential. I hope he finds his way again. So ... if you still want to try this place, I would recommend: 1) Do not talk about anything political (yeah, I know, it's a barbershop!), 2) Do not express anything less than total satisfaction, and 3) Definitely tip him. read more

I came here earlier and made an appointment through Yelp. I'll get into my review. Coming in, I was amazed by how clean this shop was. It was very nice inside and out. Organized well with old school themed decor and some taxidermy around the corners. We got to see an open space where we can see others get their hair cut right in front of us. I waited for a few minutes until it was my turn to get my hair cut. Getting into the seat, I was asked what cut I wanted. I said I wanted an undercut and I wanted the top to not be touched as I am growing my hair out. I said I just wanted the sides and the back cut in any way but none of the top cut. What happened? The top was cut. Granted, I got a nice haircut but it bothers me that I got what I did not want. I made the specific request several times just to make sure I was being heard correctly. Don't get me wrong, he does an amazing job and is awesome at his craftsmanship. The only gripe I had is that I waited MONTHS to grow my hair out for it to get the length it was at so far, only for it to be cut in a way that I didn't ask for. Now I'm in a position where I have to spend the time to grow out my hair again. That is time, patience, and effort I won't get back. There was a reason why I didn't just go to anyone to cut my hair. I was growing out my hair. Now, I'm gonna have to wait another few months to cut my hair again. This isn't meant to deter others from this joint. I still think the work done here is great. The barber here does an amazing job. I'm just frustrated that I have to start all over again and that I wasn't heard. It is what it is though. Edit: After leaving feedback through a survey, Brian reached out to me and apologized for the miscommunication we may have had. This to me proves that Brian cares about his work and I can always admire that. He clarified what his shop's mission was and I didn't know that prior to coming in. Brian is a bit off.. You don't run into it in your first visit but it quickly escalates as you return. My first haircut was fine but his consistency fell off dramatically on subsequent visits, he makes you pay first which is weird. Now, there's a gal named Cat who just started there.. she seemed dope. Went to this barber shop 2 previous years for a birthday. No problem. Went in today for my appointment, Brian refused to cut my hair due to my weight, which was never a problem before. Only difference this time was that I had almost a year's worth of hair due to quarantining. Obviously just didn't want to do the job and used my weight as an excuse. Went to a barber shop nearby and my weight never came up, huh. I may not be thin, but if I were really that over weight, I would not be mobile and able to get to a barber shop. The whole scene seemed surreal. Hilariously enough, the guy that was already there barely had any hair, was bald on top and everything. I guess we are taking the easy hair now? Shame when a good barber goes bad. I signed up to Yelp specifically to make sure this was known. Clean place, good mellow music, and the dude Brian is super nice. Can confirm the classic/contour and beard trim was 10/10. DO NOT GO HERE!!! Told the guy I wanted just the sides taken down and maybe a 1/8" off the top. I look down and see 4" chunks of hair. He totally didn't listen and completely butchered my hair.
