My first time to gym was yesterday. I travel for a living and noticed that they have a daily use option . Yesterday and today I came in early, arrive about 5:45 AM. Gym was busy, but certainly had plenty of open spaces and equipment to use for everyone. I found this to be one of the largest, best facilities I have ever used. Plenty of machines and free weights. Many options the rooms were large and clean. The facility certainly isn't but maintained well. Retro is large, clean, and has a various array of equipment in an open floor platform. The staff is cool, kind, professional, and on the ball. The only thing that blows my mind is that they never turn on the gigantic overhead fan unless a member requests it. Seriously, that fan needs to be on all the time. And that's because Retro isn't a hang-out or a meat market, it's a place for people to work out. Regardless of size, shape, or ability, Retro's members cover a wide range of body types. Employees don't say hi while they're in conversations with each other. Machines half the time don't work , the girl with braids (Annie) , super rude and nasty attitude. I went for free trial. Although the website advertised that you could Get a free guest pass, when you actually go to the facility, the attendant stated that this particular branch (Stroudsburg) Did not offer a free pass option and charged me $10. Strike 1. There was no option to secure my valuables in a locked cubby, So the only option was to walk all the way to the back of the gym and store my things in a locker room. Had to leave to secure my valuables in a car. The interior is Is garish And unappealing with a Yellow and red color scheme that is distractingly... Distracting. Foul Ball. 0-2 count. There Was only one set of water fountains by the locker room which were down for maintenance. I went to the same attendant who just charged me $10 for a guest pass that should have been free, asking her if there were any other water fountains. she said, "no, but we have water bottles for $2" ugly unattractive customer service, possibly illegal practice of not having drinkable water available at the gym, and a general bad vibe are strike 3. Please allow me to start this by saying I normally receive exceptional customer service at the Stroudsburg Retro, unfortunately today that was not the case. I purchased a smoothie and ended up discarding it secondary to the aftertaste. I was very clear that I didn't want the artificial flavors but rather actual peanut butter and banana. I saw him pump something in but it was only after I tasted it that I realized the very thing I didn't want I received. His attitude was less than stellar and rather argumentative. He was seemingly annoyed by my usage of "fake flavors". He corrected my by stating "we don't have fake flavors". While my intent was not to disrespect Retro fitness' products it is how I view artificial or non fresh fruit. But besides that I am the customer was a snarky and condescending attitude necessary or appropriate? He is not the best representative of your company. Signed up for the 12 month plan. They promised they would only bill for those 12 months and cancel after that. Nearly 17 months later and they are still billing me. I called and they refused to offer any sort of refund. They billed my an extra $70 for a cleaning fee after I hadn't even been to their gym for over 6 months. They will lie to you and scam you. I have been to the Retro in Stroudsburg multiple times as a drop in for their Zumba classes. First, I have to say, the Zumba class taught by Lulu and Mal is stellar!! They are wonderful instructors and though they are "contracted", they are an absolute asset to the Retro business! Now, back to the actual review... my initial intention when I came for my first drop in class (at $10 a day) was to take a quick tour through the gum, talk to staff, and pay to join. 1st problem....the young staff behind the desk seemed completely uninterested in me or my needs. Took my money and a quick picture, and did not so much as direct me as where to go for the class. I let this roll off my shoulders, went to the amazing Zumba class and had an optimistic outlook on still wanting to join. The next day, I get a welcoming email offering personal service to join the gym, take a tour, the whole nine yards! I had a renewed sense of faith as I sent an email back to the sales rep explaining my initial disappointment but grateful he had reached out. In my email, I ask to set up a time to come take a tour and join the gym! Well, that was in Octoberish....I have yet to receive an email or phone call in response to my reply email. BUT, every time I go back in and spend my $10 for the Zumba class, I get the same "form" email from the same sales rep inviting me to come join...so Retro, the disappointment from the lack of communication and lack of customer service tells me my money doesn't matter to you...never mind me and my health! I have since stopped going to the Zumba classes that Retro offers and have found other venues hosting Zumba. Super disappointment Retro, especially since I could walk to the Stroudsburg location! At first, I was sceptical of this colourful establishment, thinking that it's a yet another "24 hour fitness" clone -- more about "fun" and "no judging" than hard work, knowledge, and results. But it's not so bad. I was here 3 times while visiting the area. At the moment of writing it's practically brand new -- only 3 weeks old. At its core, it's a commercial gym -- there's a row of treadmills and bicycles; free weight area; tons of machines of all kind. The first disappointment was hexagonal plates. Deadlifts, cleans, rows, and all the other pulls from the floor become an unnecessary challenge. Thankfully, as I found out later, they also have bumper plates hidden in a room, so if you ask for them, it gets better, although still a little annoying. I was pleasantly surprised to find a large turf area with a sled, battle ropes, and a tire. The tire is super light (150lbs?), but the sled is a real deal. You don't often see a commercial gym having one so props for that. They also have TRX, heavy bag, and few kettlebells (unfortunately only up to 20kg but better than nothing). The customer service was pretty nice, friendly, and they worked with me to accommodate my conditions. But here's a fun little incident -- as I was working out in a corner, one of the managers walked up to me and asked if I saw who left the plates on the floor, right next to me. "Can you point them out to me? Can you point the gentleman that did it?" he said. I knew who it was but obviously didn't tell him. The conversation left an unpleasant taste in my mouth. What kind of nonsense is that? I understand you want people to follow rules but this kind of snitch approach is straight up idiotic. If you see someone leave the plates -- tell it to them. If you don't -- pick them up and carry on. Finally, it was fun to see a warning on a wall about picture taking being strictly prohibited and how violators would be prosecuted. Lol what? Are we in an area 51 or in a freaking commercial gym? What exactly are you hiding here, folks? Not even a selfie? :) I guess I could give them slack for being new and simpy trying too hard to do everything right. In any case, it's a solid 4/5. read more

Was visiting from Florida and checked out nearby gyms. I filled out a free guest pass online for the gym in stroudsburg only to find out this location "doesn't participate in guest passes" ? No where online did it state that only certain locations participate so I was very confused and disappointed when I was turned away. This is an outstanding retro. I travel with my kids for sports and have hit a bunch of gyms from Va, MD, De, and Nj. I love my home retro in Fair Lawn, but this one is really nice and a little newer. Definitely a great overall gym and one of the best retros I've seen. Newer equipment with everything you need. Gyms promote good health and for that reason alone I would give any gym 3 stars unless there were some extremely unhealthful characteristics of the facility. So you might wonder why no more than three stars? Lack of cleanliness mainly. Yes they seem to have a cleaning staff that is visible but I have to wonder if anyone in management is checking their work. I've been a member for over a year and during the cooler six months of the year I visit about three or four days a week. I do cardio and use the showers regularly. During all my visits I've never seen anyone cleaning the shower stalls. The lack of cleaning is evidenced in the once white tile grout which is turning brown as the months go by. Also the locker room is often filled with debris probably because the only trash can is by the toilet area. I would've addressed these issues privately with Retro but my personal account has no online method to send them member feedback. Makes me wonder if they have any interest in customer satisfaction. If the facility improves or gets worse I will update this review. 02/06/17 The locker room and shower cleanliness is improved. read more

Great gym. Inadequate parking. The ironic thing is the high number of able bodied people that park in the ADA Handicap parking area that either have no placard or try to disguise the invalid placard that is displayed. Makes it kind of tough for those of us with legitimate handicaps when we have to park half a block away. I brought this to managements attention and received an acceptable level of lip service, but no action was taken. read more

I'm giving it a two-star because I've only signed up at 3 weeks ago for the gym in there a certain machines that have been broken since I've been a member I do not believe the owner cares or takes pride in his equipment who are these machines would be fixed by now you hear them tell you all the time at the front desk oh well we'll have somebody fix them well 3 weeks later the same machines are still broke we pay a maintenance fee of $69 plus membership fee and they can't fix a machine that's messed up to me I really think the owner of this gym should really get a s*** together and have these machines fixed in a timely manner what do we pay $69 a year for for a maintenance fee when no maintenance is being done to these machines read more

This gym is very clean and the employees are all very nice and helpful the exercise machines are always working

I use both the East Stroudsburg and Marshalls Creek locations. I was excited about both places until I realized that they're collecting maintenance fees and not doing maintenance. I'm tired of seeing equipment wear with no repair. At the East Stroudsburg location, some of the lifting machines have broken adjustment knobs and the cardiotheater has a treadmill that has had no readout stand for months. At the Marshalls Creek location, I noticed some of the same issues. The men's bathroom has a stall with a broken lock that has been that way since last August when they collected maintenance fees. I wrote about it and put a note in the suggestion box. In addition, I spoke to a manager and worker about the matter over 2 months ago, and nothing has happened. The repair would probably cost $10! I'm spending almost $,3000/year there between my wife's and myself on membership's, maintenance fees, and personal training. At that cost, you would think you could at least get some privacy when you're using the restroom. read more

I love coming here. I can workout at my own pace and not be bothered by staff or trainers UNLESS I request it. I have been here during numerous different time frames, sometimes morning sometimes late at night, and it never fails that there's tons of hyper and motivated staff at the counter and juice bar. I have seen trainers doing group classes or individual exercises and they all seem very nice and knowledgeable about what they are doing. This gym also makes it easy for those in wheelchairs, I've seen plenty of people in wheelchairs hanging out in the main floor and using weights and other hand devices. My favorite part is the movie room. It's dark, it stays much cooler than the rest of the gym, and I can run on the treadmill without feeling like others are watching me. My only suggestion here is if they can PLEASE play more up-to-date movies. I'm not talking about new releases or whatever but Godzilla, E.T., and a few other old movies really need to go. I end up having to use my music in that room anyway because the movie is just not interesting and I'm not the only one who does that. Some newer comedies or newer action movies would be much more motivating than Godzilla, in my opinion. But overall I enjoy this facility. The locker rooms are awesome, too. The shower is big enough where I can have my clothes on the "dry" side and the shower on the other side so I can actually get dressed in there and not feel weird walking around in a towel. Another suggestion I have is to bring back the free trail pass. I guess you guys had it long ago at one point and your website still says you have it. I requested a free trial on the website specifically for this location, but when I got there, I was informed that deal is no longer a thing. Why? How are people supposed to learn your facility and see if they feel comfortable there before subbing? They offer a tour, which is awesome, but it doesn't let anyone see for themselves if they enjoy being there! read more

Not a good experience. First time here as a visitor, the equipment is outdated. The whole gym is outdated. The receptionist Alana was very cool and nice. The part I did not find professional or comfortable was when I was about to start an exercise, a random man came up to me and my sister saying that we can't have our gym bag out on the floors of the whole gym. We need to put it in the locker. I said to him ok, who are you? Do you work here? He said yes. (Not in uniform either) so strange. His name is William. He said his managers sent him to tell us this. (mind you the managers/workers were next us) Being that I dont know this stranger I said to him where is your manager? I went to him and I asked him " are you the manager, he said yes, and then I asked him do I need to put my gym bag in a locker? I wasn't aware and am here for a visit. I have belongings I need for my exercises in there." THEN the manager who was i guess training this OTHER man cut into the conversation and said yes you need to put your things in the locker or car for insurance reason."........ Their names were Kevin and I think Daniel. They said we could put our things at the front desk for the time being. So I did, finished my exercise but I did not feel well about the whole situation. my real deciding factor is the cheap monthly rate, and that it's basically next door. and they also never tried to up-sell me, or try to get me with a trainer. luckily i can go anytime i want and early in the morning is best. it gets very, very crowded at peak times... e.g., after work. they're allegedly opening another one in marshall's creek which i hope will alleviate the crowds and limited parking. (although they did recently renovate the parking, but it's unclear if it's all for retro or the other nearby businesses?) there's far too many trainers for the space. no matter where i stretch i seem to always get in their way. also, i don't go to the gym to BS and meet people, but as with every gym, there are lots of people who are just there to hangout and wear fancy gym clothes. i wish the staff would enforce the 'do not tie up equipment" rule. also, aside from the ridiculously bright lights, and loud house audio system, there's one trainer who likes to blast the most inappropriate 90s hip-hop at 0800 in the morning during one of his classes. he doesn't do this in a private room, but in a new section that's open to the rest of the gym. i'm talking about the music where every other word is f**k, ni**a, b*tch... etc. now i'm the furthest thing from conservative, or prude, but there's a time and place for that stuff. otherwise, it's kind of the only option around. read more

Doesn't seem like he cares about his business more than his physique think I'm going to quit this job I still have others that are around. The night staff was great. After being a member here for just under a year I can now give a full spectrum honest review. Parking is difficult-nothing else to say about that. No WIFI,not now not ever... why?? The owner apparently has no interest in replacing or adding machines-when they break they're gone. In the begining of my membership my family and I were enjoying watching TV on the cardio machines ---now I think there are only like 7 channels and some of the sets don't work..... WTF happened?... Forget about adding any machines,even at repeated customer requests... only 2 recumbent bikes?? Give us a break,get rid of 3 or 4 of the 30 treadmills which are never all in use, and add a few machines that people actually wait for to use,yeah like the seated recumbent bikes. In the past, a few times I couldn't get on a machine I wanted- hey it happens at a gym I know that..,now its more likely I will certainly not get a machine I want to use because membership is up up and away and keeping customers reasonably satisfied is taking a backseat. Also staff should address members who habitually do not wipe down machines when it's brought to their attention, why should I confront someone?. I pay to come here and exercise, not to be the hygiene police. No family membership plan?? Why not?.. If things don't improve (more equipment people want) I and family members will likely look elsewhere or buy some equipment for our spare room at home. By the way.. It doesn't look dirty to me, especially for the amount of people who use the facility. fix the ac and invest in dehumidifiers!!!! it has been so dangerous working out in the classroom. the floors are wet and slippery. a maintenance fee of $59 per person was just taken from us in august. the a.c. hasn't worked properly since june. its now september. this is unconscionable! i notice below people are giving 5 stars and taking about the equipment and how nice it is and this is all very appealing however, classes are held in the classrooms. this is where retro is lacking. i only gave 1 star because you have to give something in order to post a review. either they fix the problem or i can use my monthly fee doing something else. read more

I love this gym, I love the people and I love the equipment. Clay is an excellent worker and he goes out of the way to keep a smile on a clients face. I've been here a little over 6 months and now starting to have negative experiences with Kevin the owner or boss. Not sure of his title. I called to get information on a class and this man could not answer any of my questions I had. Finally after about 3 minutes he handed the phone to an employee who was able to pull up my info and answer all my questions appropriately and professionally. Never mind the fact that Kevin spoke to me very condescendingly and made me feel unwelcome.. OVER A PHONE CALL! I've never felt like my business was not welcomed over the phone. Another issue I've seen, Kevin had spoken to one of his employees in a very demeaning manner because they let a non-member use the bathroom even though they had been waiting to pick someone up. I understand there is a business to run but maybe Kevin can take a few common courtesy courses or learn a tip or two from his very helpful employees. Again I love the place and I don't think the workers get enough credit. Just hope the professionalism and kindness spreads up the business chain. read more
