This truck is SOSOSOSO GOOD! the food truck came to our apartment complex as part of food truck Fridays and, boy, were we glad we decided to give it a try. The Sweet Honey (fried chicken sandwich) was delicious. The chicken was a very generous portion and gave a crunch in every bite while still moist being moist and tender. The slaw and pickles complemented the chicken perfectly and was, honestly, *chef's kiss* AMAZING. We also got the Dragon Bowl and that was also delicious. I had the pulled pork as the protein and it was juicy and seasoned well. The portion size was huge and the prices were super reasonable. I honestly think I should've paid 4 more dollars each for the portion and quality of food we got. Also, the woman who greeted us was VERY kind and amiable. I don't know what happened with all these prior reviews calling her rude, but she was polite and conversational with all the patrons I saw. Great food. Great service. Great value. I'm glad that I was able to experience Retrolicious while still coming to our food truck days at my employer. The level of deliciousness is much appreciated, and you can tell that the owners are proud of their product. The first thing I had from Retro was the chicken and waffles, and they were BOMB! I'd go back again and again just for the syrup, and I'm not one to usually use it regularly on breakfast goodies. The chicken was crispy & moist, with a fluffy waffle under it, and the portion so large that my 1 meal turned into 2, since I was able to bring 1/2 home for dinner... great bang for your buck! My go to, however, was a grilled cheese, add (crispy) bacon with the roasted tomato soup when available... oh-my-lanta!! I would consider myself a GC Connoisseur, and could probably live on them if needed, and I would *always* look forward to Retro's, no matter how recently I've made my own. It was always crispy & gently browned on the outside while ooey & gooey on the inside, and the bacon never failed to be cooked PERFECTLY for being so thick. In my experience, asking for a slight modification on my sammy has never been questioned or mocked, like mentioned in some reviews, so I cannot speak to that, but I do have to say that Miss Kimberly has never been anything but sweet at pie to me, (and her blondies/brownies, if you can get them, are TO DIE FOR), greeted me with a smile and "how ya doin?'" and then often seems to remembe me based on my order for crispy bacon in my sandwich and soup. To know how many people she sees and serves, being remembered at my workplace for that small change is refreshing. All in all, I'm terribly bummed to hear that Retro will no longer be heading out our way, but I'm sure as heck going to be following them on social media to see if I can score more goodies at another location. I'm a recent vegan and this has been the first time since then that I've been thoroughly satisfied. Ordered the dragon bowl with tofu, which is grilled to perfection. The sesame dressing and spicy chili sauce really complemented the protein and salad. Literally so good, even my boyfriend stopped eating his chicken sandwich to have more of mine! I heard very good things about this place and I was excited to try it. Well, I did for the first and last time. I ordered a salad and asked for no tomatoes and to have the dressing on the side. The rude woman and owner, turned and looked at her husband and said "I guess the way I make the food is not good enough" as she rolled her eyes and laughed. I picked up the salad that had the dressing on it, with I kid you not with a WHOLE tomato on it. I was livid that she had done that to my order but I didn't have time to get it fixed as it took my whole lunch to get a salad. I told my co-workers what happened and so many of them expressed that they felt disrespected by the owner as well. One even went as far as to say that she was bullied. Waste of time and money. Fried chicken. My best yet in Portland. Retrolicious lays down a simple menu of tasty Southern-inspired food served from a pink cart by a couple who are owning their vintage threads and vittles. They get Southern-style hospitality. These skinless boneless bird breasts brine in an herb-infused buttermilk baste by moonlight. Then they are breaded in a just spicy enough floury coating before a trip to a hot steely pan. They are panfried homestyle, not deep fried in seventh circle of hell oil that's been cooking for a week. The result is a good build of crunchy crust with some heat, some salt and some secret spices. Doesn't seem greasy. I had mine Southern banh mai-style on a good quality bun, toasted and buttered, with fresh tomato and their slaw of red and green cabbage and grated carrots. Served with some chips on the side and with a plentiful supply of napkins for the drippings. You can get it in salad form, too, not sure what they do with the butter though. They are only open days now 11AM-7PM so plan your Southern family dinner early! You can get them to go, but no guarantee the lid will completely close over this plump bird sandwich! So bring a carrying bag! read more

Retrolicious has probably the shiniest snazziest cart in Portland. The owner, Kim, is very friendly and came out to chat with us, telling us about moving here from Phoenix. Kim also mentioned that they would be soon doing brunch on at least one day during weekends. JP and I both went for that old classic - chicken and waffles. The chicken had a delightfully crunchy maple syrup crust. The waffle was very good. However, we were not totally enamored with the chicken's savory seasonings (probably rosemary or thyme - or a combination thereof) in which the chicken had been battered. The spices clashed somewhat with the maple sweetness. But don't let the fried chicken hog the whole show. Other tempting options abound, including a pulled pork sandwich. read more

I get to be the first to review this cart and I can't tell you how excited I am about that. This might be my new favorite cart on the east side of town. Hell, it might be my new favorite cart period. After a hike today, friends and I were looking to get back to Portland to get some lunch. I knew of a few of the carts that were here just from walking by, but turns out Retrolicious hasn't been here very long. Sounds like they literally just opened. I don't know when, but certainly not very long ago. No Yelp reviews and that would be difficult to imagine if they had been open longer than a week because the food here and the service are killer. Spot on and killer!!! First, I defy you to walk by this cart and not want to eat here. Look at the pics I've posted. The cart is bright pink and just has that retro look to it, hence the name of the cart. They certainly have their brand down. Second, the woman (I think her name is Kim? Sorry, I'm bad with names.) who is one of the owners was just super friendly. My friends have a dog that we had with us and as soon as she saw us she offered up some free dog bones she had out. I don't own a dog myself, but I know that went far with my friends. After looking at the menu I knew which cart I would be eating at on this day. This is southern food to say the least. Or at least most of the menu tends to skew that way. Items such as Chicken and Waffles, Southern Style Mac and Cheese and Pulled BBQ Chicken with Slaw point you to the southern part of our country. If you read my reviews you will know that I am a very big fan of southern food. Probably my favorite and I didn't grow up anywhere near that part of the country. I have traveled down there and feel like I've tasted some very authentic meals in my time. This food is equal. Southern food served up with southern charm. You can't beat it. I did have the Chicken and Waffles (single size is $5, double is $7). Went with the double as I was super hungry after burning off many calories on the hike. This food is cooked to order, so don't expect that they have it sitting out under heat lamps. That is not how it is done at Retrolicious. Good food takes time and I have all the time in the world for good food to be prepared the right way. Took about 10 or so minutes and the food was actually brought out to us at the picnic table we were sitting at. It is the little things like this that bring a smile to my face. She didn't have to bring the food out. We would have been happy to walk back up and grab it, but she did and that means something. Taking a look at this food for the first time almost made me cry. Ok, not really. I was going for something there, but it didn't really work. Two nice breasts (I'm talking about the chicken here folks) over a fluffy waffle with warm syrup in a plastic container and hot sauce on the table. The chicken was about perfect. Not too salty, not too greasy and very tender. A bit of syrup on the waffles and some hot sauce on the chicken and I was in hog heaven. This is good after hiking food. This is good sunny weather food. Hell, this is good any weather food. All it needed was some sweet tea. I mentioned that to the woman (I hope her name was Kim. Again, sorry.) and she said she would get on that. Looking forward to that the next time I head back. We did get to speak to her about her cart a bit. i noticed the area code on the truck is a 541 area code. Didn't know where that was so I asked. She said they had just moved to Oregon from Arizona in the last few months and tried the cart down in Corvallis. That didn't work out so they relocated up here to Portland. Still living down there I believe, but looking to fully move up here sooner than later. Nice to get a bit of the back story. Corvallis lost, we won. I don't think you will be disappointed with the food here. I am super excited this is so close to my apartment and can't wait to get back. read more

Food is good, they come to our job a lot but sadly the lady is pretty rude and sarcastic and it's not appreciated by many business people. Many of my coworkers love the food but won't purchase food because of the rude customer service. We get you're busy and it's hectic but the sarcasm when people ask for dressing in the side or for something to be altered is constantly met with snarky So I get a rude email from the owner because they didn't like my comments..so I've been "uninvited" to their truck how is asking for dressing on the side for a salad treating someone like a door mat? So I'm uninvited for so so food and not great service? Oh, the simple pleasures of the modern city. Check their Facebook page fort the menu because it changes! Warning: If you have a favorite dish, you might be a little sad if it isn't available, but if you enjoy variety, surprises, big smiles and large portions, this is your place! I almost don't want to say more because the lines get rather long... I already posted several photos. The greatest hits include the grilled cheese, Dragon Bowl, & anything with their buttermilk soaked fried chicken. There is some discussion and criticism and I understand people have their preferences. You could see it as a take it or leave it mode of business. I went to a wedding with this food truck and I was very pleasantly surprised with the higher quality food served at a decent pace. I was skeptical that one truck was serving the entire wedding, but it worked out great. They have a chalk board with the menu on it and you were able to order a watermelon salad and pick one of 4 very large entrees. Each option came out hot and super flavorful. Food great! Owners (at the cart) great! The way they treat customers online horrible. Several people have made suggestions to the owners about the possibility of updating their FB/twitter feeds more frequently with their whereabouts so we can actually find them. Their responses were "our real fans know how to find us" and "we do our job, so you should do your homework". When I commented on a post confirming the same concerns/advice another customer gave, I was personally attacked about my work ethic because I mentioned that while at work I don't have access to a computer to use FB therefore I am unable to check out their menu and events tab to find where they will be. I was quickly told "you should be working at work". The crazy thing about all this is that none of the advice/suggestions were related at all about the quality of their food or themselves, yet they take extreme offense to it and obviously can not handle constructive criticism. Promptly after I responded to their personal attacks to me they took down the post and picture of the text message conversation they had with another customer with the same concerns. So to make a long story longer. I will never go here again! No matter how great I think their food is. In person, face to face, they treat you great. Once you get them online behind a computer it's a different story. This is my first ever review of any kind of restaurant or food establishment because frankly I've never experienced anything so "bipolar" in my life. I give them 2 stars solely because of how horrible they were to me as well as several others, not because of the food. read more

Talk about comfort food! I have tried the butter milk chicken sandwich and the Cubano. Both sandwiches are on point, chicken was cooked perfectly and the cubano smoke porks is the best I tried here in Portland. If your a meat lovers this place is a most. The meats and the sauces that go with all Retrolicious sandwich the best. For some reviews that calls for a side of dressing on the side, really! I have send the lady getting orders and she's great. I'm a foodie and all she's trying to do is get the orders out ASAP. The one thing a hate if you start omitting ingredients out of the recipe. Kimmie and Roy started a business in Arizona, but basically the hot climate proved to be one of the reasons for the move to Portland. They have also lived in the South (such as Georgia), which brought the inspiration for their opening week's menu. The menu changes weekly (or close to it), so if you see something you like, be sure to jump on it! On their opening day a couple weeks back, I ordered the "Suthun" Mac and Cheese ($5). Perfectly cooked macaroni gets combined with a homemade pimento cheese blend and sauteed garlicky kale. But that's not all! Potato chips were baked in on the top, with some cheddar to finish. If this was my introduction to Retrolicious, I'd like a time machine to keep reliving this one. Just fantastic comfort food, and a rather generous portion for the price. This pimento cheese blend was largely mild, with a slight tang from the pimentos and a little pleasing sweetness from other ingredients. Slices of garlic sporadically showed up on my fork. Kale is an extremely healthy option that I wish the Northwest used a lot more of. But the chips won this panda over. While others probably would use bread crumbs to get that textural contrast, some salty ruffled chips works just as well, if not better. I'd be the first to tell you that I am not a big pasta guy. Yet, this item was the first to catch my eye. Then I couldn't stop eating it. Like a good son, I shared with my mom, who kept asking me to eat more of this great dish. While not verbatim what I said, the following pretty much sums up my thoughts as I ate. "Hmm...sure, one more bite." "OK, just one more. No, really, that's the last one." "Eh, might as well finish the container." People also raved about the chicken and waffles from opening week. A buttermilk-soaked thigh or leg, with a yeasted cornmeal waffle and spiced maple syrup. Angelic pandas can start singing now. Red velvet cupcakes? They had those as well! I had to get a shot of Kimmie dusting the cupcakes with powdered sugar. Vintage action shot! True to the food cart name, Kimmie rocked a vintage outfit and apron. Again, the menu will probably change on a regular basis, so if you see something you like there, jump on it. I love food. And I love eating out. And I *LOVE* Retrolicious. Grayson Schmitz from Top Chef Season 9 talked about good food as "It's like sex in the mouth." The good folks at Retrolicious have obviously been reading the Kama Sutra. My love affair with Retrolicious began a few short months ago when they began to park at my workplace. I am not a huge Portland food cart person, so I kind of ignored them for a while. Then one of my co-workers came in with a huge pile of mac-n-cheese that smelled heavenly. On hearing it was only $3, I went for a visit. When I saw that it was pimento mac-n-cheese, I was definitely intrigued. I grew up eating pimento cheese sandwiches. They were a favorite part of my childhood. When I saw Kimmie sprinkle potato chips on top and brown the whole thing with a blow torch, I was drooling. When I put that first rich, creamy, savory bite with just a tiny hint of pimento sweet in my mouth, the seduction was complete. Every week I go back for more. The meatloaf is better than any I have ever had. The fried chicken is moist and juicy and just explodes with flavor. The sloppy joes make your mouth sing. Everything I have tried has been wonderful. Everything is close to orgasmic. But it isn't the ultimate "sex in the mouth." That is reserved for one of their swine on swine sandwiches -- the "damn that Castro." Slices of tender roast pork. Thick and perfectly cooked strips of bacon. Sweet pickled red onions unlike any pickled onions I have ever had. Thick slices of Havarti cheese. And a dijon mustard/mayo sauce makes it complete. The first bite puts you in heaven. By the second you are so far along you can't stop. By the time that last bit is gone and you have licked your fingers and the paper container, you are spent. Seriously, the "damn that Castro" is probably the best sandwich I have ever eaten. If I run out of money, I will hock something to go buy one. The Food Cart That Saved Thanksgiving! That would be the title of my Thanksgiving special! I contacted Roy a few days before Thanksgiving about purchasing a small pan of their famous Mac and Cheese. I arranged to pick up the package the day before and have it ready to bake on Thanksgiving day. On my way to their new location out by I-5 and 217 off of 68th street. I called them and was unable to get in contact with them. On my second try on the way there I was finally able to get a hold of them but unfortunately they ran out of pasta and was unable to make the dish for me. They immediately suggested a different option which was to get me all the fixings to make the dish except for the pasta and I was automatically down with that idea. I finally arrived and they totally set me up with everything I needed to make this exact dish. Everything down to the aluminum pan. I am completely impressed and blown away by your level of customer service. The most epic part of this, you guys didn't even charge me a dime. I had to find a way to tip or return the favor for your generosity. So I ordered a sandwich to go but when you took my card to pay you guys ran it through your square software and didn't leave me the option to tip you to make up for everything you've done. I owe you guys big time and will have to come around soon to return your generosity back your way. Thank you guys for making my Thanksgiving with my friends and family a wonderful holiday this year! Retrolicious came to our office this afternoon and was a huge hit as always. Some people may be inclined to dock them 1 star for their long wait for food, but I must say fresh food isn't fast food. I can always count on a hearty portion of comfort food. Today I opted for their buffalo chicken sandwich which was on point as always. The chicken had a nice crispy coating but maintained a lot of great tenderness on the inside. The sauce was not over powering and complimented the coleslaw very well. This place is ridiculously good. We had 2 sandwiches and both were fantastic. The fried chicken sandwich with bacon is the most amazing, scrumptious piece of chicken I have ever had. Seriously, it was that good. We also order the Pork Belly sandwich and it too was a huge hit. It's hit and miss with Pork Belly, but this one was perfect. Truly delicious southern food. As a native Virginian- I've eaten bbq and fried chicken in most of the southern states, and this was the best fried chicken I have had in YEARS! Incredible seasonings, juicy and perfectly crispy. I ordered a box of just chicken to go after finishing my spicy chicken sandwich. Was lucky enough to have this truck at a company gathering and tried all of their dishes! Stopped by here with my lady on our way home from an afternoon in the park with friends and found it to be a very pleasant surprise. The lady manning the cart was very cool and personable, going out of her way to make you feel welcome. We took note of how accommodating she was to a mom who was picking up dinner for her family, preparing the mac and cheese slightly differently to best fit the taste of a five year old. We ordered the BLT w/ avocado and the Cubano sandwich. Both were delicious and were enough for two meals. The tater salad on the side was heavenly. I'm not even sure where to begin with expressing how fantastic this food truck along with it's owners are!!! I got married on August 17th in Oregon City and they were a part of our wedding....serving food to approximately 100 people. Our guests are still talking about the food, how wonderful Kim and Roy are, and how accommodating they were. They went above and beyond to cater to all of our needs and followed through with all that they said they were going to do all with a smile on their faces(they actually looked like they were having a good time).
