It is so hard to find a place that makes good jojos that aren't overcooked, tiny potato wedges. This place delivered!!! The house made dill dipping sauce?? Yummmm! Can't speak to eating at the location as we just ordered to go and this place closely falls between a 3.5-4 stars but I rounded up just due to the massive portion sizes! Be sure to order ahead if you can since the wait can be 20-25 mins since they make the chicken fresh to order and if you want to avoid wait times. We ended up waiting in our car since it was raining, but there is an outdoor area and on a Friday night the Cider Mill restaurant next door seemed to have outdoor karaoke if you want to kill time. Menu is pretty standard with chicken wings, tenders, meals, and sides from fries, mozzarella sticks, etc. We opted to get the Dinner for 2 (1/2 chicken to go) and it came with chicken, french fries, slaw, and dinner rolls ($18). We added a size of mozzarella sticks for $7.25. After 20 mins we got the box and it was MASSIVE. The box was like a small sized amazon box for delivery and was a custom box made for the restaurant (super cool). Everything is just included in one box vs. separated out which made it easy to carry. As for the food + Chicken (3.5/5) - The chicken pieces were nicely portioned and had a nice crunch. The batter was cooked all the way through and wasn't too thick. I probably would have preferred some additional seasoning on it. + Spuds (3.5/5) - The spuds are thick cut fries (think steak fries) and were plenty to an order. They were fresh and had a nice flavor but I would have just fried them a bit longer as I enjoy super crispy fries. They're nice for a texture contrast to the chicken crunch though. + Mozzarella Sticks (3.5/5) - They come 8 to an order so easy to share. The marinara sauce was simple but went well since the mozzarella sticks coating had a nice flavor and crunch. Plenty of cheese but would have preferred a smaller ratio for the cheese to coating. _________ Overall, the dinner for 2 is a pretty solid option if you're craving fried chicken and portions that will last you 1-2 meals. When we came in for food, she brought her service dog that's trained for her mental illnesses and the bar tender with the glasses accused her of and argued with her that her service dog was a pet and was asking questions about her disabilities, that's AGAINST the law, my friend spoke up as she showed her card that stated the law about service animals and what you are allowed to ask but the damage of her being singled out was already done, we were allowed in and went to sit on the back porch. I was very excited to revisit The Cider Mill/Fryer Tuck after moving back to the neighborhood and it didn't disappoint. Not only is it some of the best fried chicken and JoJo's in the city, it's a good size portion and inexpensive. It's just as good as Reel M Inn but different as it's traditional fried chicken, not broasted. As for the JoJo potatoes, they have the perfect amount of crust to them and were still crispy the next day leftover. Always on a quest searching for great fried chicken, a business acquantance recommended Fryer Tuck's. I had high hopes. First time in. It will be my last. The atmosphere is somewhat divey. Total bar scene. Since I don't drink, I decided to sit in the "lobby" and wait for my small takeout order. Twenty minutes minimum as stated on a prominent sign, although my order came out well under that. The "lobby" is small, cramped, and not comfortable. The big turn-off for me was the service. The person running the counter was not particularly presentable and his attitude less than enthusiastic. When not taking orders, he washes dishes in full view of the customer (me). He did thank me when he presented my order and was not at all abrasive or unpleasant. Just lacking an enthusiastic or engaging attitude. Paying customers notice, and it counts. The kitchen had to confirm my order twice with him. Since my order did not include sides, I cannot comment on those. However, the target of my visit - the fried chicken - was fair. It had a mild burnt taste to it and I believe was cooked too hot, as the inside was fine. For a full fried chicken and standard sides, they charge a whopping $29. That's on the rich side in my opinion. All said and done, I cannot recommend Fryer Tuck's unless you are looking for a serious dive-bar experience with no regard for food. Chicken and jojos. Rolled up on a sunny Tuesday night for the delicious to-go box of some fried treats. Order of 1/2 chicken (we subbed another breast for the drumstick) was plenty of food for two people!! Mac salad is pretty good but I'm not a fan of the black olives in it. The jojos / potato wedges / whatever they're called are amazing.... crusty and fried heaven. The 1/2 order of chicken comes with an obscene amount of 'taters but I wasn't complaining. People think there are no dives in SW Portland, but they are wrong. Where there are people there are dives. And Fryer Tuck and its Cider Mill Restaurant is a dive with fried chicken on the side. My design savvy friend with the cool glasses holds her secret meetings there because she knows there would never in a million years be an agency-type spying at Fryer Tuck's, as opposed to, say, Clyde Common. The fried chicken has a medium thick and crunchy breading, unfortunately with little flavor. The chicken tenders are from another source, thicker a bit, but likewise unspicy. They do a unique jojo recipe, 3/8" French fries are breaded and fried with the same coating as the chicken. Another option is to have your fries prepared as "garlic fries" with a thinner coating of the same batter. It does make them crunchier, but not in any way garlic. For the fried chicken there is a standard ranch dip and the fries come with a sour cream and dill dip which is not that interesting. They have about a dozen taps, half macro, some war horses from Deschutes, and for Summer, some other light undistinguished micros. The place is filled with screens showing sports events and as I was leaving a band was setting up, so maybe it turns into a hot spot on Saturday night? It's a dark 80 year old building that has grown bit by bit with no plan, and filled with years' worth of promotional beer signs. Unlike many dives, it's clean, and like many dives it is a mashup of remodeling over 80 years. On the vast patio were a group of bearded guys in tee shirts and girls in summer thrift store dresses with their bikes. Inside there was a 60-something guy trying to make a move on a 40-something lady. He was talking about various friends or relatives getting out of or going into jail and taking highly important sounding calls on his feature phone. You heard it here, feature phones are going to make a comeback! At the bar was a medical professional from the local hospital relating jokes from anesthesiologists about 65-70 years ago in Germany, unimaginably offensive, I won't repeat here. People talking about misplaced passports after years of disuse. Talking about male ideal body image in relation to Iggy Pop and sharks swimming up the Columbia River. Others talking about their mobile service being cut off at midnight and the String Cheese Incident. As I was leaving, something was about to begin at the JCC, and the street was filled with nattily dressed gentlemen with white shirts and black suits in yamakas and their lady friends in finely tailored Summer dresses. If you are in the Hillsdale, Multnomah, Capitol Hill area, you're in the force field of Friar Tuck and the Cidar Mill Restaurant. If you want democratic and real, they serve it. What a great Summer microcosm in a little corner of SW Portland literally perched between Hillsdale and Multnomah. read more
