With the help of Ace Hardware in Lafayette, I was referred to Rex Lock and Safe to take care of my door handle that Bomac's was not able to repair. Instead Bomac gave and estimate of between $400 and $1000 to repair and replace the hardware. I went to Rex's and was help by Craig. The whole hardware system was broke down to me in layman terms, so I understood what he thought he could do. Well, he did it. He fixed the 40 + year old handle and saved my family hundreds of $$$, as I only charged $30. Lesson learned --- "always get a second opinion, and to not go by the reputation or location of a busy. I received Great customer service from Rex's! FYI..... When they say they close at 5 pm... They are CLOSED. But I was able to leave the lock next door and Craig picked it up in the morning. I needed a new key for my car which required a computer chip in it. I went down to see these guys. Omar was the one that helped me. This guy went out to my car and looked at it, then he had the entire key made flawlessly in less than 10 minutes. I was on my way and the key works great. Despite begin late for the appointment and not having the tools to finish the job I was told that they would finish the finish the job the same day on Friday, The problem is that the next day was Saturday, 1/14/1017 and despite being assured that someone would be available to finish the touches and take a few minutes to finish the the, the only one person that person that answered the phone said that they were closed until Monday. That would wouldn't make a problem except my job for the State of California was to delivery food and do cleaning for various disable people in San Francisco, mostly in San Francisco;s Tenderloin where security is not very good. I had to make alternative arrangement to cover my work which cost me over 400 dollars is far more than the cost of the fixing of the lock. I don't feel I got the work I paid for ad was lied about having the work done the next day. I would never choose these people and I didn't get my work since I would no longer do the work and pay someone else to do the work. read more

A really good choice! I needed an auto service for lost key and they had the right one just in case, whereas I ordered the wrong part. I wish we had tested the first key before cutting the spare which did not work for starting the car. I knew it would be a costly mistake so Im not grieving over the price, there were no hidden fees. Rex lock & key are terrible. I made a appt. for a 1 time visit for an estimate for security system. Not only did they not show up or even call me to tell me. A in-experienced young guy shows up 5 hours later, no ID to prove he is from Rex Lock & takes pictures of my existing system. He has not a clue what he is doing or has any knowledge of why he was there. I called them & mgr./ supervisor were to busy to talk with me. I will never do business with them. read more

When you walk into a store front excited to do business only to receive the worst possible attitude, it's uncomfortable!!! Then you're RIPPED OFF!!! WOW!! I was shocked how I was treated when I went to Rex Lock & Safe. A simple purchase, one key and enough BS that I should've just walked but I didn't and it cost me $38 dollars for ONE KEY to be made!!!!!! Never tell your head swollen locksmith that you are new in the industry eager to become a locksmith and currently training. You will most likely be met with resistance and discouraged. That was my experience while attempting to conduct a very very simple task, one key cut, an SC4 cut to my specs. After sharing this story with 3 other LOCAL locksmiths I feel compelled to share it with all. I am a man of integrity and live an honest lifestyle. To be judged by a business owner and ripped off by the very same person is VERY disappointing and unacceptable!!! We phoned Rex Lock & Safe at 10 AM in the morning to help us make a key for our truck. We lost the keys and were frantic. We were told that a service tech would definitely be there to help us in 1.5 to 2 hours. We waited and waited. Then they phone us when they should of been there to tell us that they wouldn't be able to come (we were only a few miles from their location) until at the earliest 4pm. In the meantime another company came out and charged us an arm & a leg. I phoned Rex Lock & Safe today to complain and they could of cared less. I guess business is really good for them because their customer service stinks. This business is absurdly unprofessional. I called to schedule a technician to come out and rekey my patio doors, which are not your typical deadbolt. They confirmed a time frame, and the tech calls me 30 minutes after the 2 hour window to tell me he is en route. He does not seem to be aware of the style locks I need keyed, then tells me he needs to get parts and will come back same time tomorrow. The next day, nobody calls to confirm or shows up during the time frame. I finally call the shop to confirm someone is coming after waiting 1.5 hours and was told the tech was en route. I never got a call from the tech and 3 hours later, nobody has shown up but business is closed for the day so I can't call to inquire until the next morning. By the third day, I've called, was told a tech would show up within a certain time frame and after about an hour of waiting with NO phone call from tech and nobody showing up, I'm giving up. I understand that things get busy sometimes but with NO communication, no updates, not even an honest apology - thanks but no thanks. I had Rex L&S install hockey puck locks on my work van. Why? Because Rex L&S has a bunch of work vans that have the exact same lock. And they apparently have (or had) one guy that installs them. I figured that experience would prove valuable. Unfortunately that experience didn't seem to help. I could not leave the van and go, so I was there during much of the installation. At one point the installer kept slamming the rear door. I'm not being picky here. He really was slamming the thing hard. At the time I was in the driver's seat on the phone with a client and couldn't see what was going on. By the time I was ready to ask about it there were other things on my mind... ...like the fact that the hasp portion of the lock warps the passenger door. The causal observer may not notice, but I do. How the van looks is important to me. They understood that because I explained it in no uncertain terms up front. I even had the locks professionally painted to match the van prior to installation. Nevertheless the door is warped. There's not much that can be done about it now, at least not for any reasonable dollar amount. Then a few days later I shut the (not often used) passenger door and the same hasp mentioned above slammed into the edge of the sliding door. I get treated to a disconcerting metallic thud every time it does. No doubt the installer got the same thud as well. Funny how he didn't bother to mention it. I was not there for every moment of the installation. (Got lunch at the pizza joint.) I obviously missed that part of the day's fun. The passenger door hasp may eventually come loose, which might require a body shop to fix. My only saving grace is that the passenger door isn't used much, so it may not come to that. I also later found out that the passenger window didn't work. They forgot to reconnect the window's power when they put the door back together. I took care of that myself. Any one of these issues isn't necessarily worth a bad review. But in total it was a bit much. The staff was mostly friendly, but they were disorganized. Their explanation was that one guy was on loan from another store. Again, that's not a big deal unto itself. But taken in total it was a bad experience that leaves my van with an unfixable (for any reasonable sum of money at least) problem that I'll just have to live with. read more

I went there to get a key for the snug top on my pick up, I told them the code for they key which is stamped on the lock. The guy told me that was not the code and he had to cut the key by taking out the lock to find the cuts that needed to be made on the key. He told me it would be $47.00 and be 45 minutes. Actually that is the code for the lock and I picked one up at a camper supply place for $10.00. So either they are ignorant and not good locksmiths or they were trying to rip me off. read more

I needed a combination safe opened and updated to a electronic code pad. I called this morning and they offered me an appointment with a tech from 11am-1pm. I took that appointment and changed around my schedule I had planned for the day. 1:30pm rolls along and still a no show. I called them asked whats doing they said the tech is at lunch so should be there in 20-30 minutes. I waited around until 2:50pm still a no show. Call them again there guy got called into some other job and was on route to my house as we speak. Well I have to pick up my niece from school at 3:30pm! No time to wait around for them! This is the store I can trust base on my experience from yesterday. The key to my car could not be inserted to the key hole because someone used his own key trying to open my car , but partial of his broken key left inside my lock. I contacted a couple of lock services for quote, but the price were pretty high and usually needed appointment in advance. I finally got this store through Google searching for a trying and directly walked in without appointment. The young guy served me was pretty smart and honest, he only spent a short minutes and successfully took out the broken key peak, and the charge was much much lower than other services. I appreciate their honesty in business since it is pretty valuable in our current society. Had an apt to fix a lock that is broken, Over two hours late for apt, I called to confirm someone was still coming. Man that came could not fix. A couple days later a manager came out and looked at it, said they could come back a third time the next day to fix.....tech called to confirm my apt for the following day. NO SHOWED on a Saturday...no call, no call still 5 days later. Would NOT recommend Super unprofessional, if you're running late totally fine, call or text...that's why we provide numbers. This place was recommended by a hardware store to create a key using the code (number printed on the key) instead of the key because I locked my keys in my apartment when my roommate left and locked the door on me. They wanted $25 to make a single key!!! I asked why so expensive, and she just said "that's just our pricing, if you had the key it would be $2". I walked right out. I get that maybe it's more expensive to make one without the key but not that much more. The locksmith about half a mile down the street made me one for $8. Called them prior to ordering my replacement key fob from Ebay. They told me they could reprogram the used key. Not!. I spent a lot of money for this key. When I called to arrange the reprogramming, they still told me they could do it. When I arrived, the locksmith said they could not do it. Only the dealer could reprogram this. What a waste of my time and money. They did not apologize, but they did make me a duplicate key for my tool box and did not charge me. Otherwise, I would have given them 1 star. Now I have to spend three times the amount I had originally figured I would spend on this spare key. Total disappointment. read more

I had just purchased a new 2010 Ram Truck that works with one of those keyless plastic keys. I drove around the East Bay for an hour and a half trying to find someone who could copy that kind of key for me. After almost giving up, I came across Rex Lock and Safe. They had exactly what I needed. They were able to copy the key for me in literally no time flat. With friendly service, I was very satisfied with their performance. While in their shop, I noticed the fine collection of safes on their showroom floor. I then looked around at these safes. After the manager returned from copying my key, I asked him a few questions as to what kind of safe I would be interested in. He then found the perfect safe that was at a great price. I asked if they had them available, and he said that it could be delivered to my doorstep the next day. I asked him if he could get it there before 8:30, and he said it shouldn't be a problem. I was greeted at 8:01 with a man in a truck with a huge box in the back. I then told him and his partner in the truck exactly where I wanted the safe put. They had the safe installed even before I had to leave for work that morning. They had left my house completely finished by 8:25. The locks on two of the compartments on my RV were damaged. The locksmith from Rex thought this was because someone tried to break in. He fixed the locks so that they could be opened or locked with my keys. As he said "they work but they are not pretty". To replace the locks, I need to call the RV manufacturer (with the key number) to get new latches.. This is a four rather than a five because they did not notify me of a scheduling problem. They left me waiting for my first appointment rather than calling me when they knew they had a problem. I had to call them to get my next appointment. Next time I have a lock problem I will call them but I will ask to be promptly notified if they know there will be a schedule slippage. read more

Beware of Rex Lock & Safe - Bait and Switch... I called Rex Lock & Safe to see how much it would cost to pick or drill the lock on my trailer hitch. The woman that answered the phone said there would be no charge for picking or drilling the lock if I purchased a new lock from them. I arrived at Rex Lock 20 minutes later and told her I was the fellow who called. She sent a technician out to the parking lot with me to look at the lock. He said he might be able to pick the lock but that he would probably have to drill the lock. He said in either case it would take about an hour to do the work and that I would be charged $90.00 labor for removing the lock - regardless of wether or not I purchased a lock from them. I told him that the woman on the phone told me there would be no charge for labor if I purchased the replacement lock from them. He told me she did not know what she was talking about and that it would take him about an hour to do the work in the hot sun (it was 75 degrees). I told him that Rex Lock was engaging in bait and switch tactics and that I would never use them in the future as I could no longer trust what they say. From the parking lot I called County Lock & Key, also in Concord. I was told the cost to pick or drill the lock would range from $25.00 to $45.00 regardless of whether or not I purchased a lock from them. I did not mention mention my experience with Rex Lock. I drove straight over to County Lock and I timed how long removing the lock would take. The technician spent 5 minutes trying to pick the lock and then told me he would have to drill it. It took another 10 minutes to drill and remove the lock. He charged me $35.00!!!! From now on I will go to County Lock & Safe, no lies and no bait and switch. read more
